Small Satellite Conference

The DarkCarb instrument has been specifically designed to provide high-resolution thermal video imagery from a small satellite in support of a range of emerging commercial, government and scientific applications. So far, such capability has only been available on large expensive satellites in a very limited fashion. Sensor and cooling technology has evolved in recent years so that such an instrument can now be designed and operated to provide useful performance over a typical satellite design-lifetime, and at a cost making new applications financially viable. The instrument provides 3.5 m Ground Sampling Distance (GSD) over a 4.5 x 3.6 km scene …

Framework For Radiation-Hardened Space Battery Management, Bhavika Kagathi Aug 2024

Framework For Radiation-Hardened Space Battery Management, Bhavika Kagathi

Small Satellite Conference

Battery management systems (BMS) are crucial for satellites to maintain a reliable energy source. Today, lithium-ion batteries act as the solution to reduce the cost and weight of satellites, yet still come with safety concerns.

The combination of the high energy density of Li-ion and flammable material associated with batteries can be hazardous due to thermal runaway, overcharging, improper balancing, and the chance of experiencing a short. Currently, there are no radiation-hardened balancer/monitor ICs with the ability to sense battery state of health and state of charge.

This poster highlights a discrete, autonomous, and reliable BMS approach that provides high …

Development Of A Methodology For Optimizing Satellite Durability By Coupling Advanced Orbit Propagation With High Fidelity 3d Thermal-Electrical Simulation, Corey D. Packard, Logan R. Canull, Zachary J. Edel, Timofey Golubev, Michael L. Larsen, Nate Mccoun

Small Satellite Conference

In the rapidly evolving landscape of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology, this study presents a pioneering approach for analyzing satellite durability through advanced orbit propagation and high fidelity 3D thermal-electric simulation. Small satellites, packed with high power components and rapidly transitioning between sunlit and eclipsed orbit segments, often feature limited thermal control systems that make thermal management a challenging (but critical) task. Additionally, the durability of battery cells and photovoltaic (PV) panels over the mission lifetime of small satellites is an important concern. Cycling and calendar fade take their toll on battery lifetime, and PV degradation reduces operational efficiency …

Maximizing Legged Accelerations: A Matter Of Force, Time, And Gravity, Lance Brooks Aug 2024

Maximizing Legged Accelerations: A Matter Of Force, Time, And Gravity, Lance Brooks

Applied Physiology and Wellness Theses and Dissertations

Sprint running accelerations require runners to apply surface forces that: support body weight by pushing downward, accelerate the body horizontally by pushing backward, and align the direction of the push with the body’s mass center to maintain balance and posture, which imposes an upper limit on the average forward acceleration force equal to the average gravitational force (1.0 G) acting on the runner. This expectation arises from the mechanical constraints imposed by the need to generate sufficient vertical force to support body weight against gravity while simultaneously producing horizontal force to accelerate forward and aligning the push through the center …

Retrospective Dosimetric Comparison Of Radiation Therapy Treatment Using Hybrid-Vmat Technique For Esophageal Cancer, Colleen Cozzie Aug 2024

Retrospective Dosimetric Comparison Of Radiation Therapy Treatment Using Hybrid-Vmat Technique For Esophageal Cancer, Colleen Cozzie

Masters Projects

Abstract

Introduction

Esophageal cancer is the fifth most common gastrointestinal cancer in the United States. As oncology treatment includes radiation as a standard of care, it is vital to examine effective treatment delivery options. Understanding the dosimetric differences between VMAT and hybrid-VMAT can help providers choose the most appropriate care plan for patients undergoing esophageal irradiation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate if VMAT or hybrid-VMAT delivery would be the superior planning method for patients with planning target volumes greater than ten centimeters. Adequately covering the tumor volume while sparing dose to adjacent critical structures is the goal …

Testing The Effect Of Autonomy-Supportive Instructions During Yoga On Autonomy, Competence, And Affective Response, Bree Geary

Psychology Theses and Dissertations

This early-phase intervention development project tested the effect of autonomy-supportive instructional cues during a single yoga session on affective response, perceived autonomy, and perceived competence. Using a between-subjects experimental design, participants were randomly assigned to either an autonomy-supportive intervention condition or a mindfulness-based control condition. During the 30-minute online pre-recorded yoga sessions, affective response was measured immediately before the yoga session, at peak, pre-savasana, and post-savasana. Perceived autonomy and perceived competence were measured immediately after. Multilevel models tested the effects of the autonomy-supportive intervention on primary outcomes (affective response, perceived autonomy, and perceived competence) and secondary outcomes (yoga practice intentions …

Clinical Research Faculty Publications

Although fasting is increasingly applied for disease prevention and treatment, consensus on terminology is lacking. Using Delphi methodology, an international, multidisciplinary panel of researchers and clinicians standardized definitions of various fasting approaches in humans. Five online surveys and a live online conference were conducted with 38 experts, 25 of whom completed all 5 surveys. Consensus was achieved for the following terms: “fasting” (voluntary abstinence from some or all foods or foods and beverages), “modified fasting” (restriction of energy intake to max. 25% of energy needs), “fluid-only fasting,” “alternate-day fasting,” “short-term fasting” (lasting 2–3 days), “prolonged fasting” (≥4 consecutive days), and …
