Minimising The Risk: Teen Perspectives On Sexual Choking In Pornography, Giselle Woodley, Kelly Jaunzems
Minimising The Risk: Teen Perspectives On Sexual Choking In Pornography, Giselle Woodley, Kelly Jaunzems
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Sexual choking / strangulation encompasses a range of practices where pressure is applied to the neck to restrict air or blood flow during a sexual encounter. While choking is most commonly associated with the application of hands around a person’s neck, other limbs or ligatures, such as the forearm or rope, may also be used (Herbenick et al., Frequency 3122; Herbenick et al., Prevalence 1059). This article will predominantly use the term “choking” or “sexual choking” to match teen vernacular and public discourse. These terms, however, may be used interchangeably with other more context-specific terms used in the literature such …

Partnering Across Professions: Public Health And Collaborative Courts Partnership To Increase Recovery Capital, Mikayla Aubry
Master's Projects and Capstones
Substance use disorder (SUD) has been steadily increasing over the past decade. The prevalence of SUD in the United States hit an all-time high of 48.7 million people struggling with SUD in 2022 (Tomko et al., 2022; United States (U.S.), 2023). State and federal policies have led to the criminalization of drug use, the dismantling of behavioral health systems, and mass incarceration of people with SUD. These policies have also created a cyclical cycle of failure and recidivism for people struggling with SUD. One intervention that has strived to rectify the mass incarceration of those struggling with SUD is the …

Effects Of Misinformation And Disinformation On Vaccine Hesitancy And Routine Vaccine Uptake, Cindy Chen
Master's Projects and Capstones
This literature review was conducted to identify the role misinformation and disinformation plays on the rates of vaccine hesitancy and vaccine uptake for routine immunization among the child and adult populations of the United States. Fifteen articles between 2018-2024 were extracted from PubMed and Google Scholar databases. As shelter-in-place and social distancing protocol wanes, the risk of common vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs) reemerges, especially in populations that have not kept up with routine immunization schedules. Current efforts to restore mass vaccination campaigns are underway, but do not provide the necessary modifications to include social, behavioral, and cultural factors that influence …
The Effects Of Simulated Predation And Nursery Structure On Post-Outplant Survival And Growth Of Sexual Juveniles Of Six Caribbean Coral Species, Jarrod Little
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
Over the past few decades, increasing frequency and severity of direct and indirect anthropogenic stressors have resulted in reef degradation and decreased coral cover and diversity. In South Florida, coral propagation ex situ has gained popularity as a means to restore coral cover. Outplanting sexually propagated corals on the reef is particularly important as it contributes to greater genetic diversity and potentially overall reef resilience. However, these corals typically experience high levels of predation following outplanting, significantly reducing coral survival, and thus constitute a major bottleneck to the success of restoration efforts. This study assessed if simulated predation events on …

Stem-Loop And Circle-Loop Tads Generated By Directional Pairing Of Boundary Elements Have Distinct Physical And Regulatory Properties, Wenfan Ke, Miki Fujioka, Paul Schedl, James Jaynes
Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers
The chromosomes in multicellular eukaryotes are organized into a series of topologically independent loops called TADs. In flies, TADs are formed by physical interactions between neighboring boundaries. Fly boundaries exhibit distinct partner preferences, and pairing interactions between boundaries are typically orientation-dependent. Pairing can be head-to-tail or head-to-head. The former generates a stem-loop TAD, while the latter gives a circle-loop TAD. The TAD that encompasses the Drosophila even skipped (eve) gene is formed by the head-to-tail pairing of the nhomie and homie boundaries. To explore the relationship between loop topology and the physical and regulatory landscape, we flanked the nhomie boundary …

Clinical Implementation Of Tissue-Sparing Posterior Cervical Fusion: Addressing Market Access Challenges, Morgan Lorio, Pierce Nunley, Joshua Heller, Bruce Mccormack, Kai-Uwe Lewandrowski, Jon Block
Department of Neurosurgery Faculty Papers
Background: The traditional open midline posterior cervical spine fusion procedure has several shortcomings. It can cause soft tissue damage, muscle atrophy, compromise of the lateral masses and painful prominent posterior cervical instrumentation or spinous process if there is dehiscence of the fascia. Additionally, patients frequently experience the rapid development of adjacent segment disease, which can result in the reemergence of debilitating pain and functional impairment. Clinical relevance: Tissue-sparing posterior cervical fusion is an alternative method for treating patients with symptomatic cervical degenerative disc disease. However, widespread clinical adoption has been challenged by ambiguity, misunderstandings and misinterpretations regarding appropriate procedural reimbursement …
Predictors Of A Positive Attitude Towards Rural Practice In Female Osteopathic Medical Students, Dana E. Kahl, Kevin Mark Roessger
Predictors Of A Positive Attitude Towards Rural Practice In Female Osteopathic Medical Students, Dana E. Kahl, Kevin Mark Roessger
Counseling, Leadership, and Research Methods Faculty Publications and Presentations
Context
Women outnumber men in medical school. Given the growing need for rural physicians and the underrepresentation of women in rural medicine, understanding predictors of rural practice among female students is imperative for addressing future healthcare workforce shortages in rural areas. Utilizing current evidence, medical schools should seek to admit students with a rural background and interest in pursuing a primary care specialty; however, whether this holds true for female osteopathic medical students is unknown.
Objectives
This study aims to determine if a rural background, a plan to practice family medicine, and motivation toward civic duty are associated with attitudes …

The Neonatal Fc Receptor (Fcrn) Is A Pan-Arterivirus Receptor, Teressa M Shaw, Meagan E Sullender, Megan T Baldridge, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Arteriviruses infect a variety of mammalian hosts, but the receptors used by these viruses to enter cells are poorly understood. We identified the neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn) as an important pro-viral host factor via comparative genome-wide CRISPR-knockout screens with multiple arteriviruses. Using a panel of cell lines and divergent arteriviruses, we demonstrate that FcRn is required for the entry step of arterivirus infection and serves as a molecular barrier to arterivirus cross-species infection. We also show that FcRn synergizes with another known arterivirus entry factor, CD163, to mediate arterivirus entry. Overexpression of FcRn and CD163 sensitizes non-permissive cells to infection …

A Machine Learning Model For Risk Stratification Of Postdiagnosis Diabetic Ketoacidosis Hospitalization In Pediatric Type 1 Diabetes: Retrospective Study, Devika Subramanian, Rona Sonabend, Ila Singh
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
BACKGROUND: Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in pediatric type 1 diabetes (T1D), occurring in approximately 20% of patients, with an economic cost of $5.1 billion/year in the United States. Despite multiple risk factors for postdiagnosis DKA, there is still a need for explainable, clinic-ready models that accurately predict DKA hospitalization in established patients with pediatric T1D.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to develop an interpretable machine learning model to predict the risk of postdiagnosis DKA hospitalization in children with T1D using routinely collected time-series of electronic health record (EHR) data.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case-control …

In recent years, the therapeutic landscape for hematological malignancies has markedly advanced, particularly since the inaugural approval of autologous chimeric antigen receptor T cell (CAR-T) therapy in 2017 for relapsed/refractory acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Autologous CAR-T therapy involves the genetic modification of a patient's T cells to specifically identify and attack cancer cells, while bispecific antibodies (BsAbs) function by binding to both cancer cells and immune cells simultaneously, thereby triggering an immune response against the tumor. The subsequent approval of various CAR-T therapies and BsAbs have revolutionized the treatment of multiple hematological malignancies, highlighting high response rates and a subset …

Identification Of Genetic Subtypes In Follicular Lymphoma, Victoria Shelton, Brad Kahl, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Follicular lymphoma (FL) exhibits considerable variability in biological features and clinical trajectories across patients. To dissect the diversity of FL, we utilized a Bernoulli mixture model to identify genetic subtypes in 713 pre-treatment tumor tissue samples. Our analysis revealed the existence of five subtypes with unique genetic profiles that correlated with clinicopathological characteristics. The clusters were enriched in specific mutations as follows: CS (CREBBP and STAT6), TT (TNFAIP3 and TP53), GM (GNA13 and MEF2B), Q (quiescent, for low mutation burden), and AR (mutations of mTOR pathway-related genes). The subtype Q was enriched for patients with stage I disease and associated …

Distinct Regulation Of Atm Signaling By Dna Single-Strand Breaks And Ape1, Haichao Zhao, Jia Li, Zhongsheng You, Howard D Lindsay, Shan Yan
2020-Current year OA Pubs
In response to DNA double-strand breaks or oxidative stress, ATM-dependent DNA damage response (DDR) is activated to maintain genome integrity. However, it remains elusive whether and how DNA single-strand breaks (SSBs) activate ATM. Here, we provide direct evidence in Xenopus egg extracts that ATM-mediated DDR is activated by a defined SSB structure. Our mechanistic studies reveal that APE1 promotes the SSB-induced ATM DDR through APE1 exonuclease activity and ATM recruitment to SSB sites. APE1 protein can form oligomers to activate the ATM DDR in Xenopus egg extracts in the absence of DNA and can directly stimulate ATM kinase activity in …

Identifying the locations and drivers of high-risk interfaces between humans and wildlife is crucial for managing zoonotic disease risk. We suggest that continent-wide improvements to residential housing in Africa are inadvertently creating artificial roosting habitat for synanthropic free-tailed bats (family Molossidae), and that improved buildings are a rapidly accelerating exposure interface that needs urgent research attention and investment. Along a residential gradient in rural southern Kenya, we mapped building use by free-tailed bats in 1109 buildings. We show that bats often roost in human-occupied buildings, with almost one-in-ten buildings exhibiting evidence of bat occupation (9.2%) and one-in-13 found to contain …

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 17(4): 1083-1091, 2024. Approximately half of military recruits fail the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT), and 70% of all injuries in the US military are musculoskeletal in nature. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether underdeveloped musculoskeletal and cardiovascular fitness levels and subsequent APFT scores of senior military college cadets could be improved by a novel, evidence-based Cadet Athlete Physical Training Intervention (CAPTI) compared to the current Remedial Physical Training program (RPT). Cadets failing the APFT (total score < 180, or < 60 in scored sit-ups, pushups or run time, respectively) participated in a 16-week remedial training program including either CAPTI (periodized full body calisthenic and varied-technique cardiovascular training, along with mobility training and mental health and wellbeing sessions), or a traditional, event-specific remedial training program (RPT). CAPTI was randomly assigned to one of three battalions, while the others received RPT. One hundred and thirty-eight cadets (n = 70 CAPTI, n = 68 RPT) participated in the study. After training, 82.9% …

Satellite Mission Success is best achieved during the Launch Early Operations Phase (LEOP) when a satellite first becomes alive as radio data (TT&C) appears on the ground station within seconds. Using the Iridium global network, no matter where a tumbling satellite is in orbit, TT&C data is available anywhere-anytime. Diagnostic data, GPS, spin rates, live ADCS, temperatures, voltages, electrical power systems, primary processor, deployments, and payload monitors like plasma density or integral particle fluxes can all be tracked during the turn-on process with the option of disabling or adjusting command parameters to the unexpected. Several EyeStar-S4 flight NSL/Iridium transceivers can …

The demand for small satellite launch opportunities continues to increase year by year, especially the demand for low-cost and flexible access. With various missions, requirements, and constraints, many small satellites require dedicated launches to reach the desired orbit at the desired schedule. Although options such as rideshares and lower-cost dedicated launches are more common compared to years before, the demand for small satellite launch services remains high. This trend is also apparent in Japan and other Asian countries as currently, there are only few opportunities to launch from the local region. To address this shortage, Interstellar Technologies Inc. based in …

Concept And Feasibility Of Enabling Broadband Comunication To A Remote Sensing Satellite, Fong-Yu Chen, Chieh-Fu Chang
Small Satellite Conference
Traditional remote sensing satellites uses X-band transmitter (XTX) to dump large volume of image data in a high data rate, i. e., greater than 100Mbps. Since the need and trend of low-earth-orbit (LEO) communications arise, we wonder if we can improve the usefulness of a remote sensing satellite by upgrading the inherent XTX as a X-band transceiver (XTRX), so that a remote sensing satellite can incorporate additional broadband communication functionality. This work investigates the feasibility in three perspectives with the illustration of FORMOSAT-8, an optical remote sensing satellite.
First, from the perspective of antenna and RF chain, the downlink band …

This essay examines how the South Korean music group, BTS, has utilized their platform to bring awareness to mental health in youth. I specifically analyze the use of their personal stories and experiences as a means of communication or outreach to their fans, also known as the ARMY. Exploring the theory of identification, or a direct sense of connectedness between a speaker and an audience, I argue that through their music and personalized rhetoric speech patterns, BTS seeks to allow their fans to view their experiences as the same. This has created a dynamic encompassing a sense of friendship and …

In this rhetorical analysis, we apply Goffman’s theory of facework to the Disney film Encanto, arguing that Encanto provides important lessons regarding facework and advocates for using facework in moderation. Encanto tells the story of the Madrigals, a family who experiences a miracle that results in each member of the family having a special gift – all except for one, the teenage protagonist, Mirabel. When Mirabel recognizes that both the miracle and her family are in danger, she realizes that her individual family members are using facework in order to fit in with the rest of the family and impress …
