NinjaSat is a 6U CubeSat X-ray observatory that observes time variations in X-ray flux through longterm monitoring of black holes or neutron stars and performs follow-up observations of unexpected objects discovered by other observatories. NinjaSat is equipped with gas X-ray detectors (GMCs) sensitive to 2–50 keV. The satellite is operated in cooperation with NanoAvionics (NA) responsible for satellite operation. As a science team, we need to process GMCs’ data and cross-check the power system and attitude of the satellite. We are developing data processing software, consisting of Quick Look software for satellite bus and GMC health checks, and calibration software …

On-Orbit Automated Processes From Fault Recovery To Mission Activities, Courtney Melville, Hannah Umansky, Claire Carlton, Anthony Ortega, Rebecca Rogers
Small Satellite Conference
While real-time command and control is an invaluable element of spacecraft operations, many functions must be automated for the benefit of mission health and success. Routine tasking, state machine implementation, payload operations, and fault recovery are all on-board activities that can be self-contained within the spacecraft’s software configuration. Currently employed for multiple on-orbit missions, the in-house flight software developed for Terran Orbital spacecraft manage these processes through a system of automatic events (auto-events). Auto-events are highly configurable functions that take inputs from the spacecraft state, then execute a defined action once that input meets a set criteria. Auto-events are defined …

The VAD Journal
Postcardiotomy cardiogenic shock is a rare complication with high mortality. When patients do not respond to the placement of an intra-aortic balloon pump or pharmacological treatment, therapy with peripheral venoarterial extracorporeal membrane is a viable option that allows active resuscitation. The adjunct use of Impella® (Abiomed, Danvers, MA, USA) allows active unloading of the dysfunctional left ventricle. However, left atrial venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (LAVA-ECMO) is an appealing and effective strategy in cases of aortic dissection, aortic valve replacement, or bioprosthesis of the aorta. Insertion of an extraction cannula that can discharge both atria or only the left atrium allows …
Improving Patient Care: Expansion Of Access To Free Clinics, Anahis H. Davidian, Gail M. Bloom
Improving Patient Care: Expansion Of Access To Free Clinics, Anahis H. Davidian, Gail M. Bloom
Patient Experience Journal
Free clinics provide free or reduced-fee healthcare services for uninsured, underserved, and marginalized populations. Free clinics may be the only source of primary care for socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals lacking health insurance. However, consistently understaffed and underfunded free clinics are struggling to meet growing needs. The demand for services results in long waitlists with long wait times. Most free clinics rely on volunteer providers and staff due to limited financial resources. This case study proposes recommendations that can address the challenges of funding limitations while improving free clinics' ability to offer more accessible and equitable care to serve a greater proportion …

Patient Experience Journal
Chronic diseases are costly to treat and burdensome for patients. Mobile health (mHealth) technologies might reduce costs of care and increase patient self-efficacy in chronic disease management, but the patient experience of mHealth is poorly understood. Our objective, therefore, was to evaluate patient experiences with using an mHealth app for complex chronic disease management, within a U.S. population of low-income patients. We used nurse/patient text messages from an mHealth complex chronic disease management tool, and exit interviews from patients, to assess qualitatively Medicaid patients' experiences with a remote monitoring mHealth app. Salient themes about the patient experience included: (1) Visibility …

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is a safe diagnostic method of high accuracy detection and characterization of various pathological conditions. However, due to the very closed aspect of the apparatus, the high sound amplitude emitted and the need to remain motionless for a significant time, some patients experience discomfort and high levels of anxiety, compromising time and image quality management that can impair the clinical outcome of the patient or even give up the performance of this procedure. Therefore, this study aimed to validate, with patients, the use of Virtual Reality (VR) as a humanized practice of exposure to magnetic resonance …

Providers and healthcare organizations have created novel ways of evaluating patients using telehealth. Patient volumes in urgent cares (UCs) and emergency departments (EDs) continue to climb, contributing to longer wait times and suboptimal patient and family experiences (PFEs). Optimizing use of telehealth may not only impact PFE of those evaluated virtually, but also reduce crowding in EDs and UCs, indirectly impacting PFE in those spaces as well. The purpose of this study is to identify any association between telehealth encounters and PFE scores. This is a retrospective review of patients seen via telehealth in virtual urgent care, UC, or the …

Research suggests that insights from patient narratives – stories about care experiences in patients' own words – contain information that can be used to improve care. However, assessments of narratives reported by clinical personnel have been mixed. This is the first study, to our knowledge, to systematically measure how useful personnel in primary care perceive patient narratives to be. We surveyed 276 clinical and administrative personnel in nine primary care clinics in a large health system in the United States. We found that perceived usefulness of patient narratives is generally high, but varies by individual characteristics such as level of …

A Commitment To Experience Must Reach Across The Continuum Of Care, Jason A. Wolf Phd
A Commitment To Experience Must Reach Across The Continuum Of Care, Jason A. Wolf Phd
Patient Experience Journal
A conversation on patient experience is not restricted to one care setting, nor should it be. People's healthcare journeys are not singular instances, but most often a series of encounters that while perhaps separate operationally from the delivery side of care, all weave together to frame one experience for a patient, their family members and care partners. This special issue purposefully takes us outside the traditional conversation space for experience, looking at segments of the care continuum including primary care, ambulatory care, free clinics and even dental care and the use of non-traditional care methods such as telehealth and app-based …

The Politics Of Possession And Gun Violence: The Bruen Decision's Impact On Firearm Regulation, Jacob Butler
The Politics Of Possession And Gun Violence: The Bruen Decision's Impact On Firearm Regulation, Jacob Butler
JCLC Online
States struggle to implement new firearms policies because they are
limited by two major forces: the political feasibility of passing new firearms
legislation and an increasingly broad and individualized Second Amendment
right. Due to this conflict, states continually return to one of few
constitutional yet politically popular methods of gun control: enacting
possession-based firearms laws. These laws are largely ineffective at
reducing gun violence.
In the 2022 Supreme Court decision New York Rifle and Pistol
Association v. Bruen, the Court further expanded the scope of the Second
Amendment to protect the individual’s right to bear arms outside of the …
