About ~4 million people with an alcohol use disorder receive treatment annually, and frequent relapse has produced a rapid revolving door between recovery and use. This paper presents preliminary data from a prospective micro-longitudinal study (30 days) that examines co-evolution of relapse risk processes of people with alcohol use disorders who entered a short-term residential substance use treatment. The primary goal of the current data was to assess the feasibility of using the open dynamic interaction network (ODIN) responsive ecological momentary assessment (rEMA). rEMA collected daily estimates on affect, urges, sober-support engagement, and use. The ODIN app administered twelve questions …

For at least the past decade, one in ten infants born in the United States have delivered prematurely or before the 37th week of gestation (March of Dimes, 2024b). As a result, there are a variety of both short- and long-term effects on the infant that include both physical and neuromotor developmental delays requiring follow-up after discharge (March of Dimes, 2024b). The extent of these delays depends on how early the infant is born and any associated congenital factors; however, the care provided in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) may help reduce the effects or length of these …
Virtual Reality And Higher Education Sporting Events: Social Anxiety Perception As An Outcome Of Vr Simulation, Kyu-Soo Chung, Chad Goebert, John David Johnson
Virtual Reality And Higher Education Sporting Events: Social Anxiety Perception As An Outcome Of Vr Simulation, Kyu-Soo Chung, Chad Goebert, John David Johnson
Faculty Articles
Background: This study investigates the relationship between Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (VRET) and social anxiety in sport environments. Social anxiety is a mental health condition that manifests people’s intense fear of being watched and judged by others and worrying about humiliation It is important to research potential tools like VRET that could help to mitigate the impact of social anxiety as people with social anxiety often avoid attending live events due to the venue’s sensory stimuli and the social encounters they anticipate. VR simulation could allow socially anxious individuals to fully experience a sporting event simulation minus the anxiety induced …

Rhetorical Tapestries Of Water Injustice: The Framing Of (In)Access And (In)Justice In The Struggle For Water Security In The United States, Carla R. Richards
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation argues that access to clean water is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of environmental justice. It critiques existing communication and rhetorical scholarship for overlooking the environmental dimensions of water access and justice. This gap hinders progress toward equity for marginalized communities disproportionately burdened by water insecurity.
This project proposes a communication approach that prioritizes culturally relevant strategies to empower these communities in advocating for their environmental rights and health needs. By bridging the communication and environmental justice fields, this project equips communities with the tools to demand fair solutions. It ultimately calls for a transformative shift …
Narrative Forms Of Violence: Fascism, Nazism, And The Holocaust In 20th-Century British Fiction, David Young
Narrative Forms Of Violence: Fascism, Nazism, And The Holocaust In 20th-Century British Fiction, David Young
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Narrative Forms of Violence: Fascism, Nazism, and The Holocaust in 20th-Century British Fiction examines how British authors explore fascist and Nazi violence through narrative. The texts in this project challenge the popular perception of Nazis and fascists and help to enrich the understanding of these character types in artistic representations of fascism and the Holocaust. I seek to reveal how each author in the three central texts examined presents fascist violence’s march toward the mainstream and the ways ordinary people deal with political violence. Each author critically depicts growing fascist regimes in World War II-era Europe and contemplates …

Lateral Others In The Trauma Narrative: The Place Of The Sibling In Accounts Of Abuse And Neglect, Michelle Browne
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The present study aimed to investigate the place of the sibling in narratives of developmental trauma as well as the sibling relationship’s impact on the formation of sense of self. Another area of interest was the impact of congruence versus incongruence in the narrative between siblings. In other words, this study sought to illuminate the impact when the sibling is understood to have reached different conclusions about shared experiences of abuse and neglect.
This study is grounded in the literature on siblings from psychoanalytic, attachment, and family systems perspectives. A series of narrative interviews were conducted with participants who identified …

Self-Efficacy Towards Teaching, Critical Thinking Dispositions, And Supervision Of Teaching Among Ces Doctoral Students, Brenda Everett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
According to the 2024 CACREP Standards (2023), “ethical behavior, diversity, equity, inclusion, and critical thinking” are essential for counselor preparation. Thus, doctoral students must be equipped to teach and incorporate “culturally sustaining content and strategies across the eight foundational curriculum areas” into counselor training upon graduation (Section 3, p.12). Given the increase in counselor education programs (Field et al., 2020) and the need for self-efficacious counselor educators (Association for Counselor Education and Supervision [ACES] Teaching Initiative Taskforce, 2016) in these programs to teach the next generation of counselors-in-training, there is a continuous need in the literature for research on self-efficacy …

HER2-positive and triple-negative breast cancers (TNBC) are difficult to treat and associated with poor prognosis. Despite showing initial response, HER2-positive breast cancers often acquire resistance to HER2-targeted therapies, and TNBC lack effective therapies. To overcome these clinical challenges, we evaluated the therapeutic utility of co-targeting TrkA and JAK2/STAT3 pathways in these breast cancer subtypes. Here, we report the novel combination of FDA-approved TrkA inhibitors (Entrectinib or Larotrectinib) and JAK2 inhibitors (Pacritinib or Ruxolitinib) synergistically inhibited in vitro growth of HER2-positive breast cancer cells and TNBC cells. The Entrectinib-Pacritinib combination inhibited the breast cancer stem cell subpopulation, reduced expression of stemness …
Chinese Tallow Long-Term Impact On Stand Dynamics In A Bottomland Hardwood Forest Following Vegetation Management, Nicklaus R. Langlois
Chinese Tallow Long-Term Impact On Stand Dynamics In A Bottomland Hardwood Forest Following Vegetation Management, Nicklaus R. Langlois
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Chinese tallow (Triadica sebifera (L.) Small) is an invasive tree known to have negative impacts on bottomland hardwood forests. Chinese tallow is proficient in reproducing and surviving in bottomland hardwood forests because it is more flood and shade tolerant than most native trees. The long-term effectiveness of Chinese tallow control is an important topic to research as only a few long-term studies of Chinese tallow control have been conducted. A 10-year re-measurement of 22 paired plots installed in 2012 on the Pineywoods Mitigation Bank near Diboll, Texas following herbicide treatments examined Chinese tallow and native tree stand structure. Each …

Phytochromes (Phys) are a divergent cohort of bili-proteins that detect light through reversible interconversion between dark-adapted Pr and photoactivated Pfr states. While our understandings of downstream events are emerging, it remains unclear how Phys translate light into an interpretable conformational signal. Here, we present models of both states for a dimeric Phy with histidine kinase (HK) activity from the proteobacterium Pseudomonas syringae, which were built from high-resolution cryo-EM maps (2.8-3.4-Å) of the photosensory module (PSM) and its following signaling (S) helix together with lower resolution maps for the downstream output region augmented by RoseTTAFold and AlphaFold structural predictions. The head-to-head …

Parkinson's disease (PD), which is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder, is characterized by progressive movement impairment and loss of midbrain dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. Although mutations in TMEM230 are linked to familial PD, the pathogenic mechanism underlying TMEM230-associated PD remains to be elucidated. To explore the effect of TMEM230 depletion in vivo, we created TMEM230 knockout rats using CRISPR-Cas9 technology. TMEM230 knockout rats did not exhibit any core features of PD, including impaired motor function, loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra, or altered expression of proteins related to autophagy, the Rab family, or vesicular trafficking. …

Today’s legal and political landscape places heavy emphasis on the decisions handed down by nine illustrious jurists—the sitting Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States. These decisions, like the Justices themselves, are often characterized as purely political. From left and right, accusations of partisanship and judicial activism hurtle toward the Court with increasing velocity and regularity. On June 6, 2022, the Court released one of the most significant and controversial decisions in its history when it overruled Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, holding that …

Technology has contributed to rapid yet fundamental changes in the way society functions—but the information revolution is just getting started. Ubiquitous, distributed, and interconnected computational power and massive data storage, coupled with human ingenuity and entrepreneurship, have led to profound impacts on society, changing the way we live, work, and interact with each other. However, these rapid advances have given rise to new legal challenges and upended the balance between the interests of corporations and consumers regarding privacy, ownership of personal data, and fundamental concepts of intellectual property. As multi-billion-dollar corporations thrive by monetizing personal data, existing legal frameworks struggle …

The mental health of older adults is of national concern. There is some uncertainty regarding access to care and whether mental and behavioral health care will be readily available in primary care settings. This paper explores the concepts of integrated delivery of care and continuity of care for older adults. The definitions of the two concepts vary in detail, but are similar in purpose. There is an array of strategies presented that outline a continuity of care that involves an integrated delivery system. Relationship development is the core of this system, as well as older adults’ ability and willingness to …

Aging Redefined: Moving Past The Deficit Model, Aaron Guest
Journal of Public Health in the Deep South
The remarkable increase in longevity is the pivotal triumph of public health over the last two centuries. Yet, even as we experience the benefits of increased longevity, we continue to face rampant ageism – or the prejudice and discrimination directed at individuals perceived as 'old.' Worst of all, we know that ageism is associated with increased medical costs, poorer health outcomes, and increased mortality. Efforts to combat ageism have been insufficient.
