Yoga As A Didactic Tool For Musculoskeletal Anatomy For First Year Medical Students, Jennnifer Brueckner-Collins, Scott P. Stuckey
Journal of Wellness
Introduction: Medical education requires students to adjust their study habits. Active learning has been shown to enhance understanding, especially regarding anatomy. Wellness has become increasingly emphasized for medical professionals; thus, it is important for medical students to develop wellness habits to mitigate burnout. Yoga is commonly practiced with a focus on wellness and flow of movements. Yoga as an educational and wellness tool integrated into medical gross anatomy is a worthwhile pursuit. This study describes a series of anatomy-based yoga videos designed to meld wellness activities with musculoskeletal anatomy review for preclinical medical students.

Deep learning has enabled breakthroughs in automated diagnosis from medical imaging, with many successful applications in ophthalmology. However, standard medical image classification approaches only assess disease presence at the time of acquisition, neglecting the common clinical setting of longitudinal imaging. For slow, progressive eye diseases like age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), patients undergo repeated imaging over time to track disease progression and forecasting the future risk of developing a disease is critical to properly plan treatment. Our proposed Longitudinal Transformer for Survival Analysis (LTSA) enables dynamic disease prognosis from longitudinal medical imaging, modeling the time to …

Cardiovascular diseases, particularly atherosclerosis, pose significant health risks due to their association with endothelial dysfunction and chronic inflammation. Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (OxLDL) plays a pivotal role in atherosclerosis by inducing foam cell formation and promoting inflammatory responses in monocytes. This study investigates the impact of OxLDL on monocyte functions, specifically focusing on metabolic changes, inflammatory responses, and cellular senescence. Additionally, we explore the potential of Mdivi-1, a mitochondrial division inhibitor, in mitigating the detrimental effects of OxLDL. Human monocytes were treated with OxLDL, resulting in increased glycolytic activity, elevated expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β and CXCL8), and significant foam cell …
Germline Genetic Determinates Of Cancer And Pre-Malignant Conditions, Jie Liu
Germline Genetic Determinates Of Cancer And Pre-Malignant Conditions, Jie Liu
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Cancer is a genetic disease stemming from a combination of inherited and acquired mutations. In my thesis, we sought to characterize how germline genetic variation affects acquired clonal expansions in normal tissues and its progression to malignancy. In Chapter 2, we studied the impact of germline genetic variation on clonal hematopoiesis (CH) in 731,835 individuals. We identified 22 novel CH predisposition genes, most of which predispose to CH driven by specific mutational events. CH predisposition genes contribute to unique somatic landscapes reflecting the influence of germline genetic backdrop on gene-specific CH fitness. Correspondingly, somatic-germline interactions influence the risk of CH …

Vagal innervation is well known to be crucial to the maintenance of cardiac health, and to protect and recover the heart from injury. Only recently has this role been shown to depend on the activity of the underappreciated dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMV). By combining neural tracing, transcriptomics, and anatomical mapping in male and female Sprague-Dawley rats, we characterize cardiac-specific neuronal phenotypes in the DMV. We find that the DMV cardiac-projecting neurons differentially express pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP), cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART), and synucleins, as well as evidence that they participate in neuromodulatory co-expression involving catecholamines. …

The Experience Of Homelessness And Its Effects On Gut Eubiosis, Kamerin Villagomez
University Honors Theses
Microorganisms which populate the human gastrointestinal tract (GIT) have a profound effect on overall human health. The relationship between host health and eubiosis, or balance, of the GIT microbiome is symbiotic and can have reciprocal relationships with quality of sleep, quality of diet, stress and mental health, and the experience of pain. These specific aspects of health are unique in populations experiencing homelessness due to the multi-dimensional and complex nature of their lived experience. Very few studies explore populations experiencing homelessness, with even fewer investigating the intersection between this population and the human GIT microbiome. It is important to do …

Asthma remains a prevalent condition among all age groups globally. First-line treatment requires the delivery of medications into the distal respiratory tract via inhalers. Using appropriate inhaler techniques is a significant challenge in achieving disease control. A variety of inhalers are available for treating asthma, and selecting the appropriate inhaler type for any given patient is crucial to achieving and maintaining symptomatic control. This review will discuss the anatomy and physiology behind drug delivery via inhalers, the types of inhalers currently available for use, nebulizers, and future directions in the delivery of inhaled medications for asthma.

Background: Accurate and timely diagnosis relies on sharing perspectives among team members and avoiding information asymmetries. Patients/Families hold unique diagnostic process (DxP) information, including knowledge of diagnostic safety blindspots-information that patients/families know, but may be invisible to clinicians. To improve information sharing, we co-developed with patients/families an online tool called 'Our Diagnosis (OurDX)'. We aimed to characterise patient/family contributions in OurDX and how they differed between individuals with and without diagnostic concerns.
Method: We implemented OurDX in two academic organisations serving patients/families living with chronic conditions in three subspecialty clinics and one primary care clinic. Prior to each visit, patients/families …

International Journal of Exercise Science 17(4): 1155-1166, 2024. Electronic handgrip dynamometry allows for multiple muscle function aspects to be feasibly measured, yet their relationship with lower extremity muscle function is unknown. We sought to determine the relationships between upper and lower extremity mechanical isometric muscle strength, rate of force development (RFD), and endurance by limb dominance in resistance trained adults. The analytic sample included 30 adults aged 32.1 ± 13.5 years. An electronic handgrip dynamometer ascertained upper extremity strength capacity, RFD, and endurance. Lower extremity strength, RFD, and endurance were collected with the isometric feature on an isokinetic knee dynamometer. …

Teachers’ Perceptions Of Public Policy And Their Impact On Teacher Retention, Carl Bryan
Teachers’ Perceptions Of Public Policy And Their Impact On Teacher Retention, Carl Bryan
The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning
Fewer issues have received more attention by education researchers than understanding the global teacher shortage, especially in public schools. Concurrent with this issue is the concern that the rate of teacher hires is insufficient to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse body of students. Further, while the research on job satisfaction, specifically in understanding their impact on teacher retention, is multifaceted, causal data underlying these approaches have been limited. This research gains significance in light of policymakers’ increasing calls for restructuring the way schools do business to effectively meet the diverse needs of students, often in spite of already-limited …

Drawing The Line: How The Lower Courts Must Adapt To Using Non-Retroactive Changes In Law When Granting Sentence Reductions In Light Of Amended Guidelines, Sophia M. Liechty
Helms School of Government Undergraduate Law Review
The United States Courts of Appeals have been divided on whether non-retroactive amendments can be used to reduce an inmate’s sentence under United States Sentencing Guidelines § 1B1.13 in light of the First Step Act. Before the United States Supreme Court’s intervention, the Sentencing Commission acted to amend the First Step Act, clarifying that a nonretroactive change in law may be used as an extraordinary and compelling reason for sentence reduction when the sentence is “unusually long.” The lower federal courts have begun to implement this amendment when granting sentence reductions. However, with these amended guidelines, ambiguity remains regarding how …

Slaughtering Slaughter-House: An Assessment Of 14th Amendment Privileges Or Immunities Jurisprudence, Caleb Webb
Helms School of Government Undergraduate Law Review
In 1872, the Supreme Court decided the Slaughter-House Cases, which applied a narrow interpretation of the Privileges or Immunities Clause of the 14th Amendment that effectually erased the clause from the Constitution. Following Slaughter-House, the Supreme Court compensated by utilizing elastic interpretations of the Due Process Clause in its substantive due process jurisprudence to cover the rights that would have otherwise been protected by the Privileges or Immunities Clause. In more recent years, the Court has heard arguments favoring alternative interpretations of the Privileges or Immunities Clause but has yet to evaluate them thoroughly. By applying the Court’s previously articulated …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Canine heartworm disease is a global mosquito-borne parasitic illness that affects dogs. The main species of filarids responsible for this disease is Dirofilaria immitis. This article specifically explores the use of cardiac biomarkers, such as N-terminal pro B type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and cardiac troponin I (cTnI), for diagnosing and monitoring canine heartworm disease. These biomarkers can indicate myocardial injury and heart failure, particularly in chronic infections. The study compares the levels of NT-proBNP and cTnI in dogs with heartworm disease, both clinically diagnosed cases and those without symptoms. The results reveal that cTnI is elevated in both cases, …

Brachycephalic airway obstructive syndrome (BAOS) is an anatomical abnormality of the upper airway commonly found in brachycephalic breeds, leading to clinical signs and physical capacity impairment. The degree of stenotic nares was reported to be related to BAOS severity in French bulldogs. This study aimed to compare clinical signs and physical capacity in French bulldogs before and after BAOS surgery using modified Roedler questionnaires and a 6-minute walk test (6-MWT). Twenty-seven French bulldogs were enrolled in this study (non-BAOS control (n=7), non-severe stenotic nares BAOS dogs (n=8), and severe stenotic nares BAOS dogs (n=12). BAOS surgery included staphylectomy using bipolar …
Conventional Vs Three-Dimensional Computed Tomography For Measurement Of Tibial Tuberosity To Trochlear Groove Distance In Small Breed Dogs With And Without Medial Patellar Luxation, Radka S. Garnoeva
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
The operative technique for medial patellar luxation (MPL) is dependent on the degree of accompanying bone deformities. The most frequent abnormalities: the shallow trochlear groove and tibial tuberosity medialisation are corrected surgically with trochleoplasty and tibial tuberosity transposition, respectively. The aim of the present study was to determine the distance between the tibial tuberosity and the trochlear groove (TT-TG) on two-dimensional axial computed tomography (CT) scans and three-dimensional multiplanar reconstruction images from 21 stifles from healthy dogs and 15 stifles from dogs with grade 2 MPL and to compare the performance of both methods. Two axial CT scans of the …

Gastrointestinal infectious diseases caused by bacteria have been a major problem in the swine industry, including Thailand. Porcine proliferative enteropathy (PPE), also known as porcine ileitis, is an enteric infectious disease caused by Lawsonia intracellularis – an obligate intracellular bacterium. PPE has been an economic threat to the global pork production system due to various types of diarrheas. Serological diagnosis can be applied to the seroprevalence of pathogen-antibodies and the timing of L. intracellularis infection when introduced to the herd. This present study showed the current serological status and the seroprevalence of antibodies against L. intracellularis in large-scale Thai swine …

Investigation Of P27 Tumor Suppressor Gene (Cdkn1b) Polymorphisms In Dogs With Malignant Mammary Tumors, Gizem Kırmızıoğlu, Iraz Akış
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Mammary tumors are the most common neoplasm in dogs, with a high mortality rate. The development of canine mammary tumors (CMT) is multifactorial, but different incidence rates between breeds suggest the effects of genetic risk factors. Many CMT-associated candidate genes were reported, mainly involved in cell cycle control. This study aims to investigate p27 tumor suppressor gene polymorphisms in dogs with mammary tumors and analyze the association between variations and CMTs. For this purpose, case and control groups were formed from 22 dogs diagnosed with malignant mammary tumors and 10 dogs with healthy mammary glands. The whole canine p27 gene …

Flavonol quercetin (Q), found in vegetables and fruits, demonstrates the most potent anti-inflammatory effect. The preventive effect and cellular mechanisms of Q (Q1, Q10, and Q100 µM) on IL-1β induced leaky gut via the signaling molecules of inflammatory pathway, NF-κB p65-iκB/or p38/ERK1/2/MLCK/phospho(p)-MLC were investigated in Caco-2 cells. The cytotoxic effect of Q was initially determined by MTT assay. Transepithelial electrical resistance (TER) and apical-to-basolateral fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled dextran (FD-4) flux were used to determine paracellular permeability. The protein expression of signaling molecules was examined by Western blot analysis, and their target MLCK mRNA expression was determined using real-time PCR. All Q …
