Neutral buffer formalin (NBF) has been widely used as a fixative for histological staining for ages. However, for some special staining, such as Masson trichrome staining, it has been proposed that the suitable fixative was Bouin’s solution. The purpose of the present study was to compare the different fixatives and post-fixative protocols on the quality of Masson trichrome staining. The canine intestines (n = 10), which were the duodenum and colon, were used as the candidate organs since they comprised of various tissue components. The fixatives and staining protocols were divided into four groups, which were Groups 1 and 2; …

It Can Be Lonely At The Top, But It Doesn’T Have To Be: Workplace Loneliness As Experienced By Senior Leaders And Potential Coping Strategies, Kristen Prince
Dissertations
Workplace loneliness is a topic of growing interest among scholars and practitioners, in part because of the known impacts of loneliness on individuals’ well-being and performance. Recent literature has suggested that senior leaders may be vulnerable to feelings of workplace loneliness but lacks a thorough depiction of how leaders experience and cope with the feelings. This qualitative study explores the lived experiences and perspectives of senior leaders through interviews with 26 leaders and seven close confidants who provide a nuanced understanding of how senior leaders experience workplace loneliness and offer insight on mitigating these feelings. The findings suggest that the …

Technical Note: Assessing Gps Sensor Accuracy Using Real-Time Kinematic Device For Livestock Tracking, Biquan Zhao, Rebecca Mcdermott, Galen E. Erickson, Yijie Xiong
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The technical aspects of global positioning system (GPS) sensors have been improved substantially over the years, making them valuable and popular tools for livestock tracking. Using GPS sensors allows producers and researchers to locate grazing livestock, monitor their behavior and distribution, and gather referencing information about the health status of the animals and pastures. However, interpreting the behavior of grazing livestock, such as cattle, from GPS data can be difficult due to positioning inaccuracies. Without knowing the positioning accuracy range of GPS sensors, achieving high-level confidence in determining grazing densities and identifying abnormal livestock movement patterns is challenging. …
Sexual Assault History And Alcohol-Aggression Expectancies As Barriers To Sexual Refusal Assertiveness In College Women, Madison Kristine Firkey
Sexual Assault History And Alcohol-Aggression Expectancies As Barriers To Sexual Refusal Assertiveness In College Women, Madison Kristine Firkey
Dissertations - ALL
Background: Alcohol-related sexual assault is a pressing health concern on U.S. college campuses. The unrelenting prevalence of campus sexual assault has led to a greater focus on how to empower college women to resist unwanted sexual advances within alcohol-infused contexts. Alcohol-aggression expectancies have emerged as one potential barrier to women’s utilization of sexual refusal strategies. The present study sought to test this hypothesized barrier using a vignette-based experimental design. Specifically, the proposed model examined the relationships between perceived perpetrator intoxication level, expectations of perpetrator reaction to sexual refusal, and willingness to refuse unwanted sexual advances. The moderating effects of prior …
The Incretin Response To Lifestyle Interventions In Young Adults And Youth With Obesity, Jared Rosenberg
The Incretin Response To Lifestyle Interventions In Young Adults And Youth With Obesity, Jared Rosenberg
Dissertations - ALL
Over the past few decades, the rates of type 2 diabetes (T2D) have seen a sharp rise in youth and young adults. Gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), the two known incretin hormones, have recently gained attention as pharmacological agents to treat T2D in both youth and young adults. Despite the efficacy of these pharmacological agents to treat T2D, lifestyle interventions are still the first-line treatment for youth and young adults at heightened risk of T2D. Therefore, we sought to assess the incretin response to lifestyle interventions in youth and young adults through separate longitudinal studies in each …

Optogenetic Control Of Bacterial Dormancy, Yousr Dhaouadi Khattab
Optogenetic Control Of Bacterial Dormancy, Yousr Dhaouadi Khattab
Dissertations - ALL
The presence of persister cells makes it difficult to eradicate chronic bacterial infections as these dormant subpopulations arise with exposure to stressors and are capable of surviving antimicrobials that target active cells. Persisters can also revert back to normal growing cells when stressors are removed thus reestablishing the infection. It is therefore important to understand the underlying mechanisms of persister formation, as well as wake-up, and target these systems in order to treat chronic bacterial infections. The formation of persisters, however, remains elusive as there is not yet a clear relationship between the various stages of dormancy. Persister cells can …

High-grade glioma (HGG) is an aggressive brain tumor. Sex is an important factor that differentially affects survival outcomes in HGG. We used an end-to-end deep learning approach on hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) scans to (i) identify sex-specific histopathological attributes of the tumor microenvironment (TME), and (ii) create sex-specific risk profiles to prognosticate overall survival. Surgically resected H&E-stained tissue slides were analyzed in a two-stage approach using ResNet18 deep learning models, first, to segment the viable tumor regions and second, to build sex-specific prognostic models for prediction of overall survival. Our mResNet-Cox model yielded C-index (0.696, 0.736, 0.731, and 0.729) for …
