Chromatin priming promotes cell-type-specific gene expression, lineage differentiation, and development. The mechanism of chromatin priming has not been fully understood. Here, we report that mouse hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) lacking the Baf155 subunit of the BAF (BRG1/BRM-associated factor) chromatin remodeling complex produce a significantly reduced number of mature blood cells, leading to a failure of hematopoietic regeneration upon transplantation and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) injury. Baf155-deficient HSPCs generate particularly fewer neutrophils, B cells, and CD8

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is widely used to enhance myeloid recovery after chemotherapy and to mobilize hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) for transplantation. Unfortunately, through the course of chemotherapy, cancer patients can acquire leukemogenic mutations that cause therapy-related myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) or acute myeloid leukemia (AML). This raises the question of whether therapeutic G-CSF might potentiate therapy-related MDS/AML by disproportionately stimulating mutant HSCs and other myeloid progenitors. A common mutation in therapy-related MDS/AML involves chromosome 7 deletions that inactivate many tumor suppressor genes, including KMT2C. Here, we show that Kmt2c deletions hypersensitize murine HSCs and myeloid progenitors to G-CSF, as evidenced …

Evaluating The Impact Of Laboratory-Based Eligibility Criteria By Race/Ethnicity In First-Line Clinical Trials Of Dlbcl, Arushi Khurana, Brad S Kahl, Et Al. Aug 2024

Evaluating The Impact Of Laboratory-Based Eligibility Criteria By Race/Ethnicity In First-Line Clinical Trials Of Dlbcl, Arushi Khurana, Brad S Kahl, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Underrepresentation of racial and ethnic subgroups in cancer clinical trials remains a persistent challenge. Restrictive clinical trial eligibility criteria have been shown to exacerbate this problem. We previously identified that up to 24% of patients treated with standard immunochemotherapy would have been excluded from recent first-line trials in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) based on 5 laboratory-based criteria. These ineligible patients had worse clinical outcomes and increased deaths related to lymphoma progression, suggesting the potential exclusion of patients who could have benefited most from the novel therapies being evaluated. Using data from the prospectively enrolled Lymphoma Epidemiology Outcomes cohort study, …

Dual Color Optogenetic Tool Enables Heart Arrest, Bradycardic, And Tachycardic Pacing In Drosophila Melanogaster, Elena Gracheva, Yuxuan Wang, Jiantao Zhu, Fei Wang, Abigail Matt, Matthew Fishman, Hongwu Liang, Chao Zhou

2020-Current year OA Pubs

In order to facilitate cardiovascular research to develop non-invasive optical heart pacing methods, we have generated a double-transgenic Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly) model suitable for optogenetic pacing. We created a fly stock with both excitatory H134R-ChR2 and inhibitory eNpHR2.0 opsin transgenes. Opsins were expressed in the fly heart using the Hand-GAL4 driver. Here we describe Hand > H134R-ChR2; eNpHR2.0 model characterization including bi-directional heart control (activation and inhibition) upon illumination of light with distinct wavelengths. Optical control and real-time visualization of the heart function were achieved non-invasively using an integrated light stimulation and optical coherence microscopy (OCM) system. OCM produced high-speed …

Experiences Of Queer Female Counselor Educators: An Intersectional Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, Caryn Leonard-Wilde Aug 2024

Experiences Of Queer Female Counselor Educators: An Intersectional Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, Caryn Leonard-Wilde

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The Council for Accreditation of Counselor Education and Related Programs and the American Counseling Association require counseling programs (CPs) to recruit, employ, and retain diverse faculty. Queer sexual orientation and gender identity is considered an aspect of diversity with which counselors must gain competency and against which counselors should not discriminate yet little is known about queer female counselor educators (QFCEs) with intersecting minority identities. The purpose of this interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) with both hermeneutic and intersectionality theory frameworks was to explore the experiences and meaning making of QFCEs and to describe the impact of these experiences on QFCE’s …

Caregivers’ Experiences Supporting The Transition To Adulthood Of Adolescents With Acquired Intellectual Disability, Melinda Rose Jordan Aug 2024

Caregivers’ Experiences Supporting The Transition To Adulthood Of Adolescents With Acquired Intellectual Disability, Melinda Rose Jordan

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Transitioning to adulthood can be challenging for adolescents with acquired intellectual disability (caused through an accident, brain injury, neglect, or health condition) and their caregivers. The purpose of this study was to examine lived experiences of caregivers who cared for adolescents with acquired intellectual disability during their transition into adulthood. This study used the phenomenological qualitative design guided by the social support theory. Three research questions were asked: what do caregivers of an adolescent with acquired intellectual disability experience as they support the adolescent’s transition to adulthood, how do caregivers of an adolescent with acquired intellectual disability experience social support …

Constructive Engagement Between Ecological Thoughts Of Karl Marx And Lao Zi, Hongyin Zhou, Yuqi Chen Aug 2024

Constructive Engagement Between Ecological Thoughts Of Karl Marx And Lao Zi, Hongyin Zhou, Yuqi Chen

Comparative Philosophy

The global ecological crisis has posed unprecedented survival challenges to human being. Consequently, ecological issues have naturally become central concerns in philosophy. From the methodological perspective of constructive engagement in comparative philosophy, we have chosen to compare the ecological thoughts of two thinkers—Karl Marx and Lao Zi (老子)—who are separated by vast spans of time and cultural tradition. We argue that Karl Marx holds a mild anthropocentric ecological view, while Lao Zi holds a transcendental ecological view. In addressing ecological issues, Lao Zi’s transcendental methodological guiding principles can provide negative methodological constraints for Karl …

From Contemplation To Counseling: Exploring Philosophical Practice By Constructive-Engagement Strategy Of Comparative Philosophy, Xiaojun Ding, Chao Yang, Peter Harteloh, Feng Yu Aug 2024

From Contemplation To Counseling: Exploring Philosophical Practice By Constructive-Engagement Strategy Of Comparative Philosophy, Xiaojun Ding, Chao Yang, Peter Harteloh, Feng Yu

Comparative Philosophy

This paper applies Bo Mou’s Constructive-Engagement Strategy of Comparative Philosophy (CESCP) to explore philosophical practice as a novel paradigm that applies philosophy to everyday life. The study advocates for a transformative methodology that seeks truth through critical engagement, joint contributions, and diverse methodological tools, advancing the discipline towards a comprehensive world philosophy. Philosophical practice, characterized by its engagement with human experience and existential inquiries, integrates Eastern and Western philosophies to guide individuals in the art of living. It offers a philosophical alternative to psychological counseling, focusing on reasoning to address life’s challenges and ethical dilemmas. The paper examines the integration …

Beyond The Buzz: Do Energy Drinks Offer More Than Caffeine For Mental And Physical Tasks?, Flavia F. Pereira, Jose Antonio, Cassandra Evans, Jose Rojas, Jason M. Curtis

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 17(2): 1208-1218, 2024. Energy drinks are marketed for enhancing mental and physical performance, often containing ingredients beyond caffeine. This study investigated whether an energy drink (ED), Gorilla Mind, exerted greater effects on sustained attention, mood, handgrip strength, and push-up performance than a caffeine-matched control drink (CAF) in exercise-trained individuals (n = 21, age: 22 ± 5.9 years). In a randomized, counterbalanced, crossover design, participants first completed tests assessing mood (Profile of Mood States; POMS), sustained attention (Psychomotor Vigilance Test; PVT), handgrip strength (HG), and 1-minute maximum push-up performance (PU). They then consumed either an ED …

Pasture Plant Identification In The Western Queensland Arid Zone, J A. Milson, I F. Beale, J A. Reynolds, J J. Bushwell, D Phelps Aug 2024

Pasture Plant Identification In The Western Queensland Arid Zone, J A. Milson, I F. Beale, J A. Reynolds, J J. Bushwell, D Phelps

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Since plant species composition is an important indicator of the health or condition of pastures and therefore the land, a first step for graziers interested in conserving the total range resource is to understand vegetation species and thus be able to identify them and to recognise species changes. This project is aimed at producing and distributing colour leaflets of the major native and problem plant species (including woody weeds) in the four major community types in western Queensland. The number of colour leaflels for the series totals 60. The number of species represented is about 230. These leaflets are dislributed …

Can Public Servants Retire?: Analyzing The Illinois Supreme Court’S Decision In Kanerva V. Weems, 2014 Il 115811, 13 N.E.3d 1228, Adam M. Riley

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

In response to the State’s failure to consistently fund its pension systems, delegates to Illinois’ Sixth Constitutional Convention adopted the pension protection clause of the 1970 Illinois Constitution, which constitutionally protects the state employee pension benefits. In 2012, during a period of serious financial hardship, the General Assembly passed legislation eliminating the state’s requirement to pay health insurance subsidies to members of a state retirement system. Members of the retirement systems challenged the constitutionality of the Act, and in Kanerva v. Weems, the Illinois Supreme Court held that health insurance subsidies are “benefits” under the pension protection clause, and therefore …

The Role Of Apologies In Labor Arbitration Outcomes, Michele Hoyman, Lamont Stallworth, David Kershaw Aug 2024

The Role Of Apologies In Labor Arbitration Outcomes, Michele Hoyman, Lamont Stallworth, David Kershaw

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

This article considers the extent to which apologies provided by grievants affect the rulings of labor arbitrators in discipline and discharge cases. We used an experimental survey design which asked respondents to render awards on hypothetical arbitration cases. Hypothetical cases varied across four variables of importance: (1) the (perceived) sincerity of an apology, (2) the timing of the apology, (3) the issue in the case—sexual harassment, insubordination due to refusal to work, and insubordination due to profanity, and (4) the seniority of the grievant. All members of the National Academy of Arbitrators were surveyed, which provided a total of 177 …

To The Dictionary And Beyond! The Personification Of Corporations In Burwell V. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc., 134 S. Ct. 2751 (2014), Alex Riley

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

In March of 2010, President Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which provides that group health plans must provide coverage for certain forms of preventative care and screenings for women. Regulations promulgated pursuant to this provision, commonly known as the contraceptive mandate, required coverage for all FDA-approved contraceptive methods without cost sharing. Two closely held corporations sued the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). The suit was based on the owners’ opposition to abortion, which was rooted in their sincerely held religious beliefs. The plaintiffs sought to enjoin enforcement …

The increased use of hydraulic fracturing has led to concerns about possible environmental harm. Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is a resource extraction technique that aims to improve well productivity by pumping fracturing fluids containing a mixture of water, other chemicals, and sand, into an oil or gas well under high pressure. Public opposition to hydraulic fracturing has led to bans and proposed bans on the practice in many American cities and towns. The Town of Dryden, New York, enacted an amendment to its zoning ordinance prohibiting all oil and gas exploration and production within its boundaries. New York state law …

Will The Real Foreign Official Please Stand Up: Determining Who Is A Foreign Official After United States V. Esquenazi, 752 F.3d 912 (11th Cir. 2014), Nicholas C. Martin

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), following extensive investigations by Congress into United States corporations and its passage in 1977, prohibits corporation or individual from giving “anything of value” to a “foreign official” for the purposes of “obtaining or retaining business.” “Foreign official” is defined as “any officer or employee of a foreign government or any department, agency, or instrumentality thereof”; however, “instrumentality” is not defined within the FCPA, and is the primary concern of this Note.

In United States v. Esquenazi, the Court of Appeal for the Eleventh Circuit, in a case of first impression, determined that an instrumentality …

Changing Residency For Illinois Tax Purposes, Ronald Z. Domsky

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

The State of Illinois assesses a tax on every individual who has the “privilege of earning or receiving income in or as a resident of this State.” Three categories of people are subject to the taxing statute: those who are live in another state but receive income from specified sources in Illinois, those who become or cease to be a resident during a taxable year, and those who are considered residents of Illinois. The term resident includes people who are in the state during a taxable year for a purpose that is not temporary or transitory and those who are …

Expanded Stepparent And Grandparent Third Party Childcare In Illinois, Jeffrey A. Parness Aug 2024

Expanded Stepparent And Grandparent Third Party Childcare In Illinois, Jeffrey A. Parness

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Recognizing the need for reforms involving, inter alia, parental and third-party childcare interests, the Illinois General Assembly created a study committee, resulting in several proposed amendments to the Illinois Parentage Act and to the Illinois Marriage and Dissolution of Marriage Act. After several years of debate and amendment, parentage and marriage dissolution law reforms were enacted in 2015. Unfortunately, the recent changes, and the earlier proposals arising from the study, insufficiently address the inadequacies of the current regimes on third-party childcare, especially childcare opportunities for stepparents and grandparents. This is especially problematic since there are few, if any, opportunities for …

“Being The Needle In The Haystack:” The Addition Of “Blending” And “Co-Cultural Networking” As Practices To Orbe’S (1998) Co-Cultural Theory, Ahmet Aksoy, Amy N. Heuman

Communication Studies Faculty Works

Using Co-Cultural Theory, we extend the concept of co-culture to the offspring of immigrants. The offspring immigrants are individuals with at least one foreign-born parent. Twenty-two offspring of Turkish immigrants born in the United States were interviewed about communication challenges from a co-cultural theoretical lens. Our analysis revealed that these participants utilize blending and co-cultural networking to process the intercultural tension they face within the US sociocultural landscape. These tensions inform us of how pronounced the US culture and power structure is and its ability to influence offspring immigrants' understanding of their cultural identity.
