Using Origami And Shrinky Dinks To Create Active Learning Activities To Tackle Two Microbiology Concepts: Cell Structure Differences And Operon Regulation, Manuela Tripepi, Hannah M. Schapiro

College of Life Sciences Faculty Papers

This paper presents two low-cost hands-on activities designed to enhance student understanding and address the pedagogical challenges faced by microbiology professors in teaching concepts related to cell structure and gene regulation. In the first activity, we used Shrinky Dinks and Jeopardy-style game questions to explore the differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Students have to collect pieces and physically build their cell models. The second activity uses origami organelles sets from Edvotek to illustrate the regulation of gene expression in the lac and trp operons, incorporating mutation scenarios for analysis. The intended audience comprises undergraduate students in microbiology, including biology, …

Why The Afghan And Iraqi Armies Collapsed: An Allied Perspective, Colin D. Robinson Aug 2024

Why The Afghan And Iraqi Armies Collapsed: An Allied Perspective, Colin D. Robinson

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

Rather than military factors, American and Western liberal ideas (ideological views) and politics explain many of the obstacles faced in rebuilding the Afghan and Iraqi Armies. Liberal ideas largely determined what options the coalition would use. Ideological factors help explain democratization and reconstruction challenges, partner leaders with divergent aims, military-cultural factors and the Western combat focus, politicization, corruption, and nepotism. This article reviews the differences between Western liberal democracies and partner states, the politics of counterinsurgency, and army accounts. This article will assist US practitioners in security cooperation, institutional capacity building, and security assistance.

Restoring Priority On Cultural Skill Sets For Modern Military Professionals, Daniel W. Henk, Allison Abbe Aug 2024

Restoring Priority On Cultural Skill Sets For Modern Military Professionals, Daniel W. Henk, Allison Abbe

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

The Department of Defense has failed to distinguish and sustain cultural education relative to foreign language and regional expertise, putting servicemembers at a competitive disadvantage in developing skills to engage other cultures. This article draws on recent retrospective publications and multidisciplinary social science perspectives but goes beyond them to argue for social science approaches to culture, department-wide efforts to revive culture education, and an improved transition of sociocultural research to practice. Policy and military practitioners will benefit from understanding how culture-general skills complement other important skills in the human domain and from implementing its recommendations.

Energy Expenditure In Humans: Principles, Methods, And Changes Throughout The Life Course, Rodrigo Fernández-Verdejo, Guillermo Sanchez-Delgado, Eric Ravussin

Clinical Research Faculty Publications

Humans require energy to sustain their daily activities throughout their lives. This narrative review aims to (a) summarize principles and methods for studying human energy expenditure, (b) discuss the main determinants of energy expenditure, and (c) discuss the changes in energy expenditure throughout the human life course. Total daily energy expenditure is mainly composed of resting energy expenditure, physical activity energy expenditure, and the thermic effect of food. Total daily energy expenditure and its components are estimated using variations of the indirect calorimetry method. The relative contributions of organs and tissues determine the energy expenditure under different physiological conditions. Evidence …

BACKGROUND: It has been argued that the use of artificial turf football fields in the National Football League (NFL) increases player injury risk compared with natural grass surfaces.

PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to quantify the rate of lower extremity injuries occurring in NFL players on artificial turf compared with natural grass surfaces and characterize the time missed due to injury and proportion of injuries requiring surgery. It was hypothesized that lower extremity injuries requiring surgical intervention would occur at a higher rate on artificial turf than on natural grass.

STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiology study.

METHODS: Lower extremity …

Department of Pediatrics

CHOICES-TEEN is a bundled intervention aimed at reducing the risks of unintended pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, and alcohol- and tobacco-exposed pregnancies for adolescent girls involved in the juvenile justice system. We examined youths’ (N = 22) elicited pros and cons concerning alcohol, tobacco, condom, and contraception use to inform future iterations of CHOICES-TEEN and other prevention programming during a one-arm pilot study. Content analysis was used to identify recurring themes elicited and recorded during a decisional balance exercise with a counselor. The most recurrent pros and cons were factors that directly affected these adolescents, with more immediate consequences. The …

Using The Home Health Oasis To Promote Advance Care Planning Among Community-Dwelling, Frail Older Adults, Suzanne S. Sullivan Aug 2024

Using The Home Health Oasis To Promote Advance Care Planning Among Community-Dwelling, Frail Older Adults, Suzanne S. Sullivan

Dissertations

Despite an aging population with increasing proportions of frailty and decline, the rates of documented Advance care plans (ACP), meant to align goals for care with the level of treatment at end-of-life (EOL), are low (~30-40%). Patients expect clinicians to raise the question about serious illness goals for care when the time is right, however, there are a number of barriers to the initiation of these difficult conversations including provider bias and uncertainty. A review of the literature indicates that there are few prognostic indices available for use to identify the right time to initiate EOL conversations based on risk …

A Fundamental Cause Approach To Intimate Partner Violence In Marginalized Populations, Nicholas S. Metheny Aug 2024

A Fundamental Cause Approach To Intimate Partner Violence In Marginalized Populations, Nicholas S. Metheny

Dissertations

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a serious public health concern that transcends partnership types and societies, affecting approximately one-third of women worldwide. Men in same-sex relationships likely experience violence at similar rates. This dissertation takes a fundamental cause approach to social-ecological and minority stress theories, arguing that structural forces are the root causes of violence in two target populations: women residing in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) and Indigenous men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States. Consisting of eight chapters, four of which are empirical studies, this body of work creates new knowledge surrounding how social …

Impact Of An Open Access Appointment Scheduling System On No-Show Rates In An Urban Federally Qualified Health Center, Rosemary Ward Aug 2024

Impact Of An Open Access Appointment Scheduling System On No-Show Rates In An Urban Federally Qualified Health Center, Rosemary Ward

Dissertations

No-show medical appointments lead to health disparities and threaten the financial survival of Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs). Open access scheduling eliminates long lead times, a common reason for no-show visits. Preventive health screenings and chronic disease management were drastically reduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, requiring innovative methods to increase access to care. The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project was to measure the impact of an open access scheduling system on no-show rates in an urban FQHC. A pre-post observational design compared two days per week of no-show data for a span of 10 weeks between two family …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Rare genetic diseases are typically studied in referral populations, resulting in underdiagnosis and biased assessment of penetrance and phenotype. To address this, we develop a generalizable method of genotype inference based on distant relatedness and deploy this to identify undiagnosed Type 5 Long QT Syndrome (LQT5) rare variant carriers in a non-referral population. We identify 9 LQT5 families referred to a single specialty clinic, each carrying p.Asp76Asn, the most common LQT5 variant. We uncover recent common ancestry and a single shared haplotype among probands. Application to a non-referral population of 69,819 BioVU biobank subjects identifies 22 additional subjects sharing this …

Teachers’ Perspectives On Social-Emotional Learning Benefits For Students With Emotional And Behavior Disorders, Rasheida Ross

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The problem addressed in this study was that there is a lack of knowledge about middle school special education teachers’ perceptions on the benefits of social emotional learning (SEL) strategies for improving the behavior of students with emotional behavior disorder (EBD) in a self-contained setting. Comer’s concepts on social learning served as the conceptual framework for this study. The research questions explored middle school self- contained special education teachers' perceptions of the effectiveness of SEL with middle school EDB students on their behavior, and the middle school self-contained special education teachers' perceptions of the effectiveness of SEL with middle school …

Pacific Faculty Work

Toxoplasmosis is a globally significant disease that poses a severe threat to immunocompromised individuals, especially in Brazil, where a high prevalence of virulent and atypical strains of Toxoplasma gondii is observed. In 1998, the EGS strain, exhibiting a unique infection phenotype, was isolated in Brazil, adding to the complexity of strain diversity. The P2X7 receptor is critical in inflammation and controlling intracellular microorganisms such as T. gondii. However, its genetic variability can result in receptor dysfunction, potentially worsening susceptibility. This study investigates the role of the P2X7 receptor during acute infection induced by the EGS atypical strain, offering insight into …

A Qualitative Study On Transnational Caregiving For Older Parents In China, Silai Dong Aug 2024

A Qualitative Study On Transnational Caregiving For Older Parents In China, Silai Dong

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

The increasing number of international migrations in China poses challenges for the care of older parents who are left behind, considering China’s emphasis on family support. This study aims to investigate transnational care arrangements for older parents whose children are overseas. It mainly addresses three research questions:1) What are the contents of filial piety in the context of international migration? 2) How do Chinese transnational family members negotiate and distribute elder care responsibilities? 3) To what extent can the transnational caregiving model explain elder care in Chinese transnational families?

The transnational caregiving model proposed by Baldassar, Baldock, and Wilding, in …

The Role Of Health Campaigns In Stigma Toward Those With Anorexia Nervosa, Crystal L. Hoyt, Jeni L. Burnette, Anna Marston, Meghan Moore, Samara Rosen, Ilana Lavine

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

Media health campaigns often seek to bring awareness to medical conditions and to eradicate or, at least, minimize stigma. However, these campaigns can result in unintended consequences. In the current work, we examined elements of anorexia nervosa messages. Specifically, we compare a more biofocused approach to one focused on treatment. In doing so, we build on mindset theory and suggest that a biofocused message sends more of a static and stable message (fixed mindset), whereas treatment-focused communications send an implicit message that anorexia can change (growth mindset). We investigate how these messages and mindsets relate to stigma. Across three studies, …

A Secondary Analysis To Inform A Clinical Decision Rule For Predicting Skull Fracture And Intracranial Injury In Children Under Age Two, Elizabeth L. Stone

Dissertations

The purpose of the current study was to identify the variables associated with the risk of closed head injury (CHI) in children under age two with suspected minor head injuries based on age-appropriate, or near age-appropriate, mental status on exam, as defined by a Glascow Coma Score (GCS) of 15 or 14, respectively. The goal was to propose a set of variables that, when considered together, have a high degree of predictive accuracy in identifying CHI in this population. This set of variables could eventually be used to inform a clinical decision rule which may help triage nurses make acuity …
