OBJECTIVE: This investigation examines burden of comorbidity measured by the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) and Elixhauser Comorbidity Index (ECI) among inpatients based on age, sex, and race. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of 2012-2018 US NIS datasets. Participants were inpatients 55y+. ICD-9/10 codes for admitting diagnoses were used to calculate disease burden using the CCI and ECI. Unweighted mean CCI and ECI scores were compared across demographic variables. RESULTS: An increase in mean CCI and ECI scores across age, sex, and races (p < .001) was identified. Compared to the youngest age group (55-59y), all age groups had higher mean CCI and ECI adjusting for time (p < .001). Increases were greatest in older age groups until age 80-84 for CCI and 85-89 for ECI. The female group had lower CCI adjusting for time (p < .001) compared to males. There was no difference between sex groups in mean ECI (p=.409). Compared with the White group, all other race groups had higher mean CCI adjusting for time (p < .001). Black inpatients had the highest CCI followed by Native American inpatients. Findings were similar for ECI, but with no difference between Hispanic and White groups (p=.434). CONCLUSIONS: Growing multimorbidity burden among adult inpatients across age, sex, and race supports the continued need for programs for preventing and reducing multimorbidity, especially among communities that experience health inequity including older, Black, and Native American patients.

International Journal of Physical Activity and Health
Research examining physical activity (PA) is significant because of the known benefits of PA. Studying high school (HS) students is particularly important due to the consistent decline in PA as students age. One strategy to increase PA is to increase someone’s self-efficacy (confidence) to be physically active which is commonly positively associated with PA. Most of the research on how to support physical activity self-efficacy (PASE) comes from outside-of-school interventions with minimal literature on how to support students’ PASE within HS physical education (PE). This study attempted to identify and share practices that current HS PE teachers were implementing to …

Liberal arts education in the United States seeks not only to prepare students for a specific career but also to develop well-rounded citizens. As part of the core liberal arts curriculum at Lynn University, all students must complete a service-learning course known as the Citizenship Project. A core component of the course is a student-designed service-learning project executed each year. In 2019, the Citizenship Project was revised to align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ensuring that each project would seek to contribute to one of these goals. The purpose of this study is to examine which SDGs …

An Ecopsychological Reading Of Susan Fennimore Cooper’S “Rural Hours”
The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)
Ecopsychology explores the relationships between the mind (psyche) and the surrounding environment. As Andy Fisher puts it in Radical Ecopsychology (2013), ecopsychology, “would approach the psyche in relation to its earthly or natural home, its native abode” as well as the “the basic shifts in our patterns of identity and relationship that occur when we include our connection to the web of life around us as essential to human well-being.” Fisher considers ecopsychology as a project that paves the ground for changing the role of humans from exploiters to members in the biotic community. If eco or ‘oikos’ refers to …

Humanitarian Natural Disaster Response And Recovery: A Proposed Ecopsychological Framework, Megan Scott
The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)
This paper explores humanitarian natural disaster response and recovery through an ecopsychological lens. The author proposes an ecopsychological approach to humanitarian natural disaster response and recovery to (that?) addresses structural and personnel challenges typical of mainstream humanitarian disaster response. Three main threads inform this proposed ecopsychological natural disaster framework. First, exploreing the roots of colonization in disaster contexts and offering different ways of knowing through Indigenous perspectives and traditional ecological knowledge. Second, examineing grief experienced by humanitarian workers. Third, offering ecopsychological tools and healing modalities to support healing and resiliency for humanitarian workers and communities on the frontlines of natural …

Neuroepithelial tumors with fusion of PLAGL1 or amplification of PLAGL1/PLAGL2 have recently been described often with ependymoma-like or embryonal histology respectively. To further evaluate emerging entities with PLAG-family genetic alterations, the histologic, molecular, clinical, and imaging features are described for 8 clinical cases encountered at St. Jude (EWSR1-PLAGL1 fusion n = 6; PLAGL1 amplification n = 1; PLAGL2 amplification n = 1). A histologic feature observed on initial resection in a subset (4/6) of supratentorial neuroepithelial tumors with EWSR1-PLAGL1 rearrangement was the presence of concurrent ependymal and ganglionic differentiation. This ranged from prominent clusters of ganglion cells within ependymoma/subependymoma-like areas, …

A Study Of Inhibition Development In Young Children, Ai Thi Thanh Hoang
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
Child inhibition can be learned consciously and unconsciously, and it is highly dependent on the quality of interaction with adults (i.e., parents and teachers). However, little is known about the impact of teachers’ emotional management and sensitivity on the development of inhibition skills among students in early childhood classrooms. This dissertation takes an integrative approach to explore whether teacher-child relationship and teacher self-efficacy have a bidirectional connection and how they work to impact child inhibition, directly and indirectly. The present research utilizes the large nationally represented Early Childhood Longitudinal Study 2010-2011, sponsored by the National Center for Education Statistics in …

In metazoans mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) or retrotransposon cDNA released to cytoplasm are degraded by nucleases to prevent sterile inflammation. It remains unknown whether degradation of these DNA also prevents nuclear genome instability. We used an amplicon sequencing-based method in yeast enabling analysis of millions of DSB repair products. In non-dividing stationary phase cells, Pol4-mediated non-homologous end-joining increases, resulting in frequent insertions of 1-3 nucleotides, and insertions of mtDNA (NUMTs) or retrotransposon cDNA. Yeast EndoG (Nuc1) nuclease limits insertion of cDNA and transfer of very long mtDNA ( >10 kb) to the nucleus, where it forms unstable circles, while promoting the …

PURPOSE: Systemic treatments given to patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are often ineffective due to drug resistance. In the present study, we investigated patient-derived tumor organoids (PDTO) and matched tumor tissues from surgically treated patients with NSCLC to identify drug repurposing targets to overcome resistance toward standard-of-care platinum-based doublet chemotherapy.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: PDTOs were established from 10 prospectively enrolled patients with non-metastatic NSCLC from resected tumors. PDTOs were compared with matched tumor tissues by histopathology/immunohistochemistry, whole exome sequencing, and transcriptome sequencing. PDTO growths and drug responses were determined by measuring 3D tumoroid volumes, cell viability, and proliferation/apoptosis. Differential …

Inhibitors of heterotrimeric G proteins are being developed as therapeutic agents. Epitomizing this approach are YM-254890 (YM) and FR900359 (FR), which are efficacious in models of thrombosis, hypertension, obesity, asthma, uveal melanoma, and pain, and under investigation as an FR-antibody conjugate in uveal melanoma clinical trials. YM/FR inhibits the Gq/11/14 subfamily by interfering with GDP (guanosine diphosphate) release, but by an unknown biophysical mechanism. Here, we show that YM inhibits GDP release by stabilizing closure between the Ras-like and α-helical domains of a Gα subunit. Nucleotide-free Gα adopts an ensemble of open and closed configurations, as indicated by single-molecule Förster …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Importance: A composite score of flavonoid-rich foods (flavodiet) may provide a clear public health message regarding the range of foods with the potential to lower dementia risk. Objective: To examine associations of flavodiet score and intakes of flavonoid subclasses with dementia risk according to genetic risk and presence of depression and hypertension. Design, Setting, and Participants: This prospective, population-based cohort study included dietary data from adults aged 40 to 70 years in the UK Biobank, recruited between 2006 and 2010, with a mean (SD) follow-up of 9.2 (1.5) years. The data analyses were conducted from September 1 to 30, 2023. …

BACKGROUNDImmune processes are influenced by circadian rhythms. We evaluate the association between varicella vaccine administration time of day and vaccine effectiveness.METHODSA national cohort, children younger than 6 years, were enrolled between January 2002 and December 2023. We compared children vaccinated during morning (7:00-10:59), late morning to afternoon (11:00-15:59), or evening hours (16:00-19:59). A Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to adjust for ethnicity, sex, and comorbidities. The first varicella infection occurring at least 14 days after vaccination and a second dose administration were treated as terminal events.RESULTSOf 251,141 vaccinated children, 4,501 (1.8%) experienced breakthrough infections. Infection rates differed based …
