The Effect Of Attitudinal Dynamics Of Inpatient Nurses On The Use Of A Mobile Electronic Health Record, Mark Ambler Sep 2024

The Effect Of Attitudinal Dynamics Of Inpatient Nurses On The Use Of A Mobile Electronic Health Record, Mark Ambler

Dissertations

The implementations and ongoing use of mobile information systems could enhance nursing workflows at the point of care. However, when a system is not perceived as easy to use or useful, the frequency of its use is decreased. This non-experimental quantitative study conducted a survey of inpatient bedside nurses and nurse leaders to determine how their perceptions and attitudes affected the use of mobile technology. Statistically significant positive correlations were found when the participants were asked if the mobile system gave them greater control over their work. A statistically significant relationship was found between bedside nurses and nurse leaders, where …

Influences Of Perceived Environment, Partner Support, And Attitudinal Familism On Physical Activity Among Mexican American Women, Neomie C. Congello Sep 2024

Influences Of Perceived Environment, Partner Support, And Attitudinal Familism On Physical Activity Among Mexican American Women, Neomie C. Congello

Dissertations

Healthy lifestyle behaviors such as engaging in physical activity (PA) may reduce the risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD), the number one cause of mortality among Mexican American women (MAW). Research findings show that MAW have low levels of leisure time PA and vary in the amount of overall PA. The influence of partner support has received little attention in studies examining predictors of PA. This cross sectional study investigated factors influencing PA among MAW aged 19 to 64 years old (mean = 39.4, SD = 11.1) who may be at increased risk for CVD based on hypertension, diabetes and obesity …

OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the exposure of OBGYN residents to didactics, clinical training, and confidence in evaluation and management of patients with HMB due to IBDs. METHODS: Prospective survey of OBGYN residents through email solicitation. Residents were invited to complete an anonymous 26-item survey, querying residents' confidence in evaluation and management of HMB in …

Does Internalized Weight Bias Affect Reported Physical Activity In Adolescents?, Caroline Simmons, Brennen Till, Chad Jensen, Monica Martinez Sep 2024

Does Internalized Weight Bias Affect Reported Physical Activity In Adolescents?, Caroline Simmons, Brennen Till, Chad Jensen, Monica Martinez

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

Background: Negative internalized weight bias is associated with poorer mental health, while physical activity (PA) has been shown to have protective mental health benefits. Previous research with teens has not explored whether weight bias predicts PA participation. We evaluated weight bias internalization as a predictor of total minutes of PA, hypothesizing that greater weight bias would predict less PA participation.

Methods: One hundred participants ranging (14-18 years) have completed the study. Participants completed the Weight Bias Internalization Scale (WBIS) and the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents (PAQ-A). Linear regression analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between scores …

Policy Tools For Youth Development In African American Communities, Adedapo Oladipo Adeyanju Sep 2024

Policy Tools For Youth Development In African American Communities, Adedapo Oladipo Adeyanju

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Many African American adolescents live in disadvantaged neighborhoods due to decades-long segregationist housing policies. Living in these settings have isolated them from mainstream society and put them at risk for developmental issues and engagement in risky behaviors and violent crime as young adults. The purpose of this study was to examine past experiences of public housing beneficiaries exposed to concentrated poverty and their perceptions of how their neighborhood characteristics affect adolescent development. Research questions examined how housing policies have inhibited development or isolated Black youths to specific housing programs, affecting their opportunities to be better citizens. The theoretical framework for …

Parents’ Perception Of Family Dynamics When Their Children Use Video Games Excessively, Joseph Benjamin Collins

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Excessive video game use among youth has been linked to communication problems within families and disrupted family dynamics, notably reducing time spent with family members and reinforcing withdrawal from family activities and other recreational pursuits. While quantitative research has addressed the connection between children’s excessive video gaming and its negative impact on family dynamics, a deeper understanding of parents' perceptions remained needed. This study aimed to explore how parents described family dynamics when their children engaged in excessive gaming, using attachment theory as the theoretical framework. Data were collected through semistructured interviews with 12 parents, and thematic analysis was used …

Codesigning A Clinical Prediction Model For Aboriginal Perinatal Mental Health Using Glassbox Ai And Aboriginal Wisdom And Lived Experience, Guanjin Wang, Hachem Bennamoun, Wai Hang Kwok, Rhonda Marriott, Roz Walker, Jayne Kotz

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Perinatal mental health is vital for mothers, infants, and families. Aboriginal mothers, despite their strengths, face greater mental health disparities due to colonisation and trauma. Traditional screening methods lack cultural sensitivity. The Baby Coming You Ready (BCYR) program offers a culturally sensitive assessment with promising pilot results. To support health professionals, an AI solution using the Explainable Boosting Machine (EBM) is proposed, trained with Aboriginal lived experiences. This model identifies maternal protective and risk factors, offering interpretable predictions for holistic culturally sensitive care.

Human Development and Family Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Surveys remain a mainstay of social sciences research. The study’s primary purpose was to replicate a web-first tailored design method (TDM) in a previously surveyed rural population from a state in the mid-south of the U.S. to investigate changes in response mode (web versus paper). Most respondents did not change their response mode between the two data collection periods. They chose to complete their surveys on paper rather than the internet, even though most had access to and used the internet. The use of TDM continues to be an effective data collection strategy for a rural population. Given the emphasis …

Cd8Α Structural Domains Enhance Gucy2c Car-T Cell Efficacy, Trevor R. Baybutt, Ariana A. Entezari, Adi Caspi, Ross E. Staudt, Robert D. Carlson, Scott A. Waldman, Adam E. Snook

Department of Pharmacology, Physiology, and Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Despite success in treating some hematological malignancies, CAR-T cells have not yet produced similar outcomes in solid tumors due, in part, to the tumor microenvironment, poor persistence, and a paucity of suitable target antigens. Importantly, the impact of the CAR components on these challenges remains focused on the intracellular signaling and antigen-binding domains. In contrast, the flexible hinge and transmembrane domains have been commoditized and are the least studied components of the CAR. Here, we compared the hinge and transmembrane domains derived from either the CD8ɑ or CD28 molecule in identical GUCY2C-targeted third-generation designs for colorectal cancer. While these structural …

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)'s Red List of Threatened Species is regarded as the primary source of global extinction risk for species. Despite this importance, the IUCN has assessed less than 20% of the world′s estimated 400,000 flowering plants due to issues like insufficient data or a lack of experts. Thousands of conservation status assessments were generated recently in response to the call to action by the revised Target 2 of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC), “An assessment of the conservation status of all known plant species, as far as possible, to guide conservation action.” …

All Publications

Introduction: The goal of our research programme is to develop culturally appropriate patient-specific interventions for primary and secondary prevention of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) among people living with HIV (PLWH); PLWH are at a higher risk for OPC than the general population and, as with many cancers, there are disparities in OPC health outcomes by race and ethnicity. Our study incorporates an anti-racist research framework that proposes considering racism as a foundational sociocultural system that causes ill health. We expand the framework to include biases due to gender, sexual orientation, HIV status and membership in other non-dominant groups. …

By integrating ED spectrometry with autocorrelation (AC) analysis, we investigate the conformational characteristics of biological molecules such as amino acids, proteins, and extracellular vesicles (EVs) induced by elliptically polarized UV absorption. Our streamlined approach offers a cost-effective and portable solution with minimal sample consumption and supports multiple working modes to efficiently characterize biomolecular structures. The insight from this new approach demonstrates potential applications in using biomolecular characterization for cancer detection.

Exploring How Uncertain Labels From Non-Consensus Panels Affect Machine Learning, Amal Almansour Sep 2024

Exploring How Uncertain Labels From Non-Consensus Panels Affect Machine Learning, Amal Almansour

College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations

A dataset becomes meaningful for analysis when it contains more representative features. Machine and deep learning models rely on annotated instances for training. The annotation process is usually done either by humans (experts or crowdsourcing) or by models. In many cases, the variability between humans (the inter-observer variability) in evaluation leads to uncertainty in the learning process. Due to the lack of reliable labels in large datasets, the inter-observer variability can be quantified with different methods to estimate the ground truth label (i.e., referenced standard label) for model learning.
