Mental Health During The Covid-19 Pandemic In Trinidad: An Analysis Of Depression, Anxiety, And Stress Among Essential Workers, Bernadette Marson, Gerard A. Hutchinson
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Research shows that some essential workers, such as healthcare workers, social workers, and first responders (including police officers, paramedics, and firefighters), are at greater risk for developing both short- and long-term mental health problems (Berger et al., 2012; Canady, 2022; Grey et al., 2020; Haugen et al., 2012; Mohamed et al., 2022; Petrie et al., 2018). The most prevalent of these include anxiety, depression, and stress, as well as other social and cognitive problems—with stress causing harmful effects on mental health and potentially resulting in anxiety and depression, which may then disrupt an individual’s social relationships, family life, and work. …

Community pharmacies have unparalleled potential to increase access to pre-exposure prophylaxis medications (PrEP) for HIV prevention; however, only 17 out of 50 states in the United States have statewide authority for pharmacists to provide PrEP at community pharmacies. Few studies have reported on how pharmacists overcome the legislative barrier and provide PrEP services in restrictive pharmacy prescription states. The objective of this article is to identify the existing primary literature describing pharmacist PrEP services in the community in states with restrictive prescription authority. Methods: A systemic literature review was conducted to identify the primary literature that involved community pharmacy service …

Many Parkinson’s disease (PD) models overexpress α-Synuclein using heterologous promoters, which is adequate to demonstrate that excessive α-Synuclein is toxic but not ideal for learning the precise ontogeny of the disease pathogenesis, specifically where the disease starts and how it progresses. To answer these questions, it is beneficial to generate a mouse model expressing a disease-causing mutation under the endogenous promoter. Here, we generated three Snca knock-in mice. Among them, homozygous SncaG51D mice develop motor deficits by 9 mo of age. These mice exhibit olfactory and gastrointestinal abnormalities by 6 mo. They lose dopaminergic neurons and have reduced dopamine …

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a rare genetic chronic condition leading to fragile bones and frequent bone fractures with wide-reaching health implications. Current literature suggests that children with chronic diseases face unique challenges at school, yet research regarding educational concerns among those with OI is limited. The present study involved qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews with 10 children with OI and 12 caregivers of a child with OI. Children and caregivers participated in the interviews individually; they were not dyads of participants. Half of the caregivers who participated had OI themselves. The interviews were coded, and six themes were identified: (1) …

Effective mentorship is a pivotal factor in shaping the career trajectory of trainees interested in classical hematology (CH), which is of critical importance due to the anticipated decline in the CH workforce. However, there is a lack of mentorship opportunities within CH compared with medical oncology. To address this need, a year-long external mentorship program was implemented through the American Society of Hematology Medical Educators Institute. Thirty-five hematology/oncology fellows interested in CH and 34 academically productive faculty mentors from different institutions across North America were paired in a meticulous process that considered individual interests, experiences, and background. Pairs were expected …

Although hemodynamic stress plays a key role in aneurysm formation outside of sickle cell disease (SCD), its role is understudied in patients with SCD. We hypothesized that tissue-based markers of hemodynamic stress are associated with aneurysm presence in a prospective SCD cohort. Children and adults with SCD, with and without aneurysms, underwent longitudinal brain magnetic resonance imaging/magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) to assess cerebral blood flow (CBF) and oxygen extraction fraction (OEF). Baseline characteristics were recorded. In the subgroup of adults, stepwise mixed-effect logistic regression examined clinical variables, CBF, and OEF as predictors of aneurysm presence. Cumulative rates of new aneurysm …

Loss-of-function mutations in the C terminus of TPL2 kinase promote oncogenesis by impeding its proteasomal degradation, leading to sustained protein expression. However, the degradation mechanism for TPL2 has remained elusive. Through proximity-dependent biotin identification (BioID), we uncovered tripartite motif-containing 4 (TRIM4) as the E3 ligase that binds and degrades TPL2 by polyubiquitination of lysines 415 and 439. The naturally occurring TPL2 mutants R442H and E188K exhibit impaired TRIM4 binding, enhancing their stability. We further discovered that TRIM4 itself is stabilized by another E3 ligase, TRIM21, which in turn is regulated by KRAS. Mutant KRAS recruits RNF185 to degrade TRIM21 and …

Neurovascular coupling (NVC) and neurometabolic coupling (NMC) provide the basis for functional magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography to map brain neurophysiology. While increases in neuronal activity are often accompanied by increases in blood oxygen delivery and oxidative metabolism, these observations are not the rule. This decoupling is important when interpreting brain network organization (e.g., resting-state functional connectivity [RSFC]) because it is unclear whether changes in NMC/NVC affect RSFC measures. We leverage wide-field optical imaging in Thy1-jRGECO1a mice to map cortical calcium activity in pyramidal neurons, flavoprotein autofluorescence (representing oxidative metabolism), and hemodynamic activity during wake and ketamine/xylazine anesthesia. …

Neurodegenerative diseases, which are characterized by progressive neuronal loss and cognitive decline, are a significant concern for the aging population. Neuroinflammation, a shared characteristic of these diseases, is implicated in their pathogenesis. This article briefly summarizes the role of magnesium, an essential mineral involved in numerous enzymatic reactions and critical for neuronal bioactivity, in the context of neuroinflammation and cognitive decline. The potential neuroprotective effects of magnesium, including the mechanisms of neuroprotection by magnesium through maintaining neuronal ion homeostasis, reducing inflammation, and preventing excitotoxicity, are also described. Additionally, we discuss the impact of inadequate magnesium on neuroinflammation and its potential …

We are considering a novel method for analyzing time series data that relies on quasi-linear recurrence relations. Unlike neural networks, this approach allows for directly formulating high-quality quasi-linear difference equations that accurately represent the studied process. Techniques for determining the parameters of a single equation have been devised and validated. This work discusses and tests a technique for identifying the parameters of a quasi-linear recurrence equation. This approach is employed to tackle the issue of regression analysis including observable variables that are mutually dependent. It enables the utilization of the Generalized Least Deviations Method (GLDM). This model was utilized in …

Development Of Intensive Grassland Systems: From Science To Practice, D G. Mccall, G W. Sheath
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Level of nnimal production from grassland is determined by the amount of pasture grown, pasture utilisation and animal conversion efficiency. The key components affecting production are pasture growth and animal conversion efficiency. These arc mainly influenced by environment, genetics and through inputs to maintain soil fertility or animal health. Systems development aims to link pasture growth and animal conversion through efficient strategies for pasture utilisation. The means of influencing pasture utilisation is through adjustments to animal feed demand, feed supply or grazing management. Stock policies that adjust the pattern and level of feed demand are of greatest significance in developing …

It is challenging to acquire user data from a diverse set of adequate numbers of suitable real end users for design, evaluation, and improvement of a product. Involving real users in evaluation requires a sufficient level of product maturity. It is difficult to bootstrap and test personalization because it requires personal data. This disclosure describes techniques to overcome these limitations by generating synthetic data that mimics authentic digital and social user practices via simulated personas with local memory. The simulation utilizes the semantic understanding and reasoning capabilities of LLMs and includes interaction between the personas and various digital applications and …

3d Bioactive Thiol-Norbornene Hydrogels For Guiding Stem Cell Mechanosensing And Differentiation, Arielle Gsell
U-RISE Undergraduate Theses
Hydrogels are soft, highly hydrated polymeric networks commonly used as biomaterial scaffolds in tissue engineering. To mimic the extracellular matrix of tissues, hydrogels can be chemically modified to incorporate either bioactive molecules such as peptides, or physically modified with crosslinkers to alter hydrogel stiffness and degradation. Hydrogels with defined characteristics can be synthesized using chemical reaction schemes such as photo-click chemistry, which offers spatial and temporal control over biochemical and physical properties. The goal of this thesis is to leverage thiol-norbornene click chemistry, a subtype of photo-click chemistry, to develop 3D hydrogels with biochemical and biophysical cues that guide mesenchymal …

Nevada’S Predictable Housing Train Wreck And What To Do About It, Arthur C. Nelson
Policy Briefs and Reports
Nevada is on the cusp of a housing catastrophe, especially in Southern Nevada.
Consider that the state has fewer households than it should. A household is defined as one or more people who have a home of their own. But for price, location, configuration, and other factors, about 60,000 households in Nevada do not exist because there is no home for them. And it’s going to get worse. Including these “missing households,” nearly 470,000 new occupied homes will need to be built between 2020 and 2040 to meet the housing needs of all Nevadans, or about 23,000 per year. The …
