Diving Into Watershed Science And Education: Blending Science, Storytelling, And Professional Practice In Northern Michigan, Mara Clare Pellerito

Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects

This portfolio expands understanding of the relationship between watershed education and science through storytelling, lived experiences, and research. In northern Michigan, the invasive Myriophyllum spicatum threatens watershed health by forming dense patches that block sunlight, exclude native plants and wildlife, and retain harmful nutrients later released by herbicide treatment. The Lake Leelanau Lake Association has managed this species with preventative and restorative practices since 2020, and this portfolio examines their results through scientific study and practical experience from the summers of 2024 and 25. It also explores how education serves as a stepping stone from childhood curiosity to a lifetime …

Fast Demodulation Of Ofdr-Based Distributed Sensing Based On Enhanced Buneman Frequency Estimation, Zhaopeng Zhang, Bo Liu, Xiao Liu, Caiyun Li, Osamah Alsalman, Chen Zhu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Aiming at realizing high-efficiency distributed strain sensing through optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR), this paper introduces a fast demodulation algorithm to determine strain-induced spectral shifts from coarse Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) cross-correlation spectra. The proposed approach employs an enhanced Buneman frequency estimation (BFE) algorithm, enabling direct spectral shift analysis across coarse signals. By applying this algorithm, the need for dense interpolation in the conventional cross-correlation demodulation process - typically required for a finer spectral sampling interval but at the cost of demodulation efficiency - can be eliminated. Both theoretical analysis and experimental investigation reveal the equivalence of the BFE and conventional …

Enhancing Risk And Crisis Communication With Computational Methods: A Systematic Literature Review, Madison H. Munro, Ross J. Gore, Christopher J. Lynch, Yvette D. Hastings, Ann Marie Reinhold

VMASC Publications

Recent developments in risk and crisis communication (RCC) research combine social science theory and data science tools to construct effective risk messages efficiently. However, current systematic literature reviews (SLRs) on RCC primarily focus on computationally assessing message efficacy as opposed to message efficiency. We conduct an SLR to highlight any current computational methods that improve message construction efficacy and efficiency. We found that most RCC research focuses on using theoretical frameworks and computational methods to analyze or classify message elements that improve efficacy. For improving message efficiency, computational and manual methods are only used in message classification. Specifying the computational …

From Cyclones To Cybersecurity: A Call For Convergence In Risk And Crisis Communications Research, Ann Marie Reinhold, Ross J. Gore, Barry Ezell, Clemente I. Izurieta, Elizabeth A. Shanahan

VMASC Publications

Effective risk and crisis communication can improve health and safety and reduce harmful effects of hazards and disasters. A robust body of literature investigates mechanisms for improving risk and crisis communication. While effective risk and crisis communication strategies are equally desired across different hazard types (e.g., natural hazards, cyber security), the extent to which risk and crisis communication experts utilize the “lessons learned” from scientific domains outside their own is suspect. Therefore, we hypothesized that risk and crisis communication research is siloed according to academic disciplines at the detriment to the advancement of the field of risk communications research writ …

Quantum-Augmented Ai/Ml For O-Ran: Hierarchical Threat Detection For Synergistic Intelligence And Interpretability, Tan Le, Vanessa Le, Sachin Shetty

VMASC Publications

Open Radio Access Networks (O-RAN) enhance modularity and telemetry granularity but also widen the cybersecurity attack surface across disaggregated control, user and management planes. We propose a hierarchical defense framework with three coordinated layers—anomaly detection, intrusion confirmation, and multiattack classification—each aligned with O-RAN’s telemetry stack. Our approach integrates hybrid quantum computing and machine learning, leveraging amplitude- and entanglement-based feature encodings with deep and ensemble classifiers. We conduct extensive benchmarking across synthetic and real-world telemetry, evaluating encoding depth, architectural variants, and diagnostic fidelity. The framework consistently achieves near-perfect accuracy, high recall, and strong class separability. Multi-faceted evaluation across decision boundaries, probabilistic …

Phase-Variation Microwave Resonator For Highly Sensitive Dynamic Sensing, Chen Zhu, Rex E. Gerald, Jie Huang Jan 2025

Phase-Variation Microwave Resonator For Highly Sensitive Dynamic Sensing, Chen Zhu, Rex E. Gerald, Jie Huang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

High-precision dynamic sensing is critical in fields, such as industrial automation, structural health monitoring, and environmental sensing, where real-time responses to minuscule changes can prevent system failures or optimize performance. In this work, we introduce and demonstrate a phase-variation coaxial cable resonator (CCR) as a highly sensitive sensor for dynamic sensing applications. As a proof of concept, a prototype device based on a custom-designed CCR is thoroughly investigated for dynamic displacement measurements, as displacement is a fundamental quantity essential to numerous applications. The sensor consists of two components: a static CCR device and a movable conducting plate. As the conducting …

An Extensive Analysis Of Match-Tracking Methods For Artmap, Niklas M. Melton, Leonardo Enzo Brito Da Silva, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper identifies and studies five match-tracking (MT) methods in the adaptive resonance theory (ART) literature and conducts a detailed comparative analysis of these in ARTMAP applications. We focus on model performance for each MT method with respect to time and space efficiency as well as classification accuracy. Experimental results indicate that one MT variant, used in ARTMAP applications for the first time in this work, provides significant improvements in computational efficiency: depending on the ARTMAP variant, it was able to achieve up to one order of magnitude reduction in both time and space requirements, albeit with a compromise in …

Understanding Students' Decision To Proceed With Hybrid Education: Examining The Post-Covid-19 Scenario, Heng Zhang Jan 2025

Understanding Students' Decision To Proceed With Hybrid Education: Examining The Post-Covid-19 Scenario, Heng Zhang

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Hybrid education—integrating online and in-person instruction—has become a prominent educational model in the post-COVID-19 educational landscape. While prior research has examined the benefits and challenges of hybrid learning, as well as general acceptance patterns through frameworks such as the technology acceptance model and the theory of planned behavior, critical gaps remain in identifying the factors shaping students’ behavioral intentions toward this educational model. This study addresses these gaps by analyzing the interplay of external variables (such as prior hybrid learning experience, employment status, course type, commute time, and work-family balance) and socio-demographic attributes (such as age, gender, academic program and …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Wildlife researchers must balance the need to safely capture and handle their study animals to sample tissues, collect morphological measurements, and attach dataloggers while ensuring their results are not confounded by stress artifacts caused by handling. To determine the physiological effects of research activities including chemical immobilization, transport, instrumentation with biologgers, and overnight holding on a model marine mammal species, we collected hormone, blood chemistry, hematology, and heart rate data from 19 juvenile northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) throughout a translocation experiment. Across our six sampling timepoints, cortisol and aldosterone data revealed a moderate hormonal stress response to handling accompanied …

Factors Associated With Contraceptive Discontinuation Among Women In The U.S., Moradi Aljadani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Background: Contraceptive discontinuation is a significant public health concern in the United States, contributing to unintended pregnancies and associated health, social, and economic consequences. Despite the availability of a wide range of contraceptive methods, many women discontinue use prematurely due to a variety of personal, social, cultural, and systemic factors. However, limited research has comprehensively examined these factors at the national level, particularly within a theoretical framework that captures the multidimensional influences on contraceptive decision-making. Objective: This study aimed to assess the factors associated with contraceptive method discontinuation among women in the U.S, guided by Ray’s Theory f …

A Self-Sustaining Autonomous System For Long-Term Arctic Monitoring, Wenqiang Xu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The accelerated melting of Arctic sea ice poses critical challenges to global climate stability, marine ecosystems, and navigation safety. To address the need for continuous, high-resolution monitoring of the Arctic environment, this dissertation explores the development and feasibility of a Self-sustaining Autonomous System (SAS) for long-term Arctic observation. The proposed system is designed to overcome the limitations of traditional fixed or drifting buoys, as well as the range and endurance constraints of drones and Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV)s, by utilizing a Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH) Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) as a core observation platform. The wind-powered SWATH harnesses …

Psychometric Properties Of A New Acculturation Scale For Latinos/Hispanics, Alicia Goytizolo Jan 2025

Psychometric Properties Of A New Acculturation Scale For Latinos/Hispanics, Alicia Goytizolo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The current study evaluated the psychometric properties of the newly developed Multi-Ethnic Acculturation Scale (MAS), a multidimensional instrument designed to assess behavioral and cognitive aspects of cultural adaptation among Hispanic/Latino individuals in the United States. A sample of 208 adults from diverse Hispanic backgrounds completed the MAS alongside two validated acculturation measures: the Short Acculturation Scale for Hispanics and the Vancouver Index of Acculturation. Exploratory factor analyses revealed a partially distinct but moderately correlated factor structure for both American and Latino cultural orientation subscales, supporting a bidimensional conceptualization of acculturation. Internal consistency was high across both subscales (Cronbach’s α > .90), …

Exploring Emotional Awareness Through Interactive Design, Mona Gandomkar Jan 2025

Exploring Emotional Awareness Through Interactive Design, Mona Gandomkar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

This research was inspired by my emotional journey after relocating to the United States. Navigating a new culture, language barriers, and unfamiliar routines brought a complex mix of emotions. These experiences led me to begin to better understand and manage my emotional responses. That process revealed the importance of emotional awareness and became the foundation for my exploration into how design can help individuals recognize and engage with their emotions more meaningfully.

Emotions are significant in human life, from social relationships to decision-making. However, many people fail to understand their emotions or how to control them. Individuals experience emotions differently, …

Quackery Unmask’D: Defining Quackery In English And American Vernacular Medical Works, C. 1600-1800, Katherine Rose Horan Jan 2025

Quackery Unmask’D: Defining Quackery In English And American Vernacular Medical Works, C. 1600-1800, Katherine Rose Horan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

This thesis argues that, from 1600 to 1800, healers in both England and America conceptualized quackery through an evolving understanding of what made a medical practitioner “acceptable.” Through a close examination of vernacular medical print published in both England and America throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, this thesis complicates earlier understandings of quackery as being disconnected from politics and social biases. Instead, medical authors used social position—specifically gender, race, and religion—and medical philosophy as ways to identify quacks. In England, the Royal College of Physicians used quackery to delegitimize their opponents, while critics of the College did the same. …

Troponin C (TnC) is the Ca²⁺-sensing subunit of troponin that is responsible for activating thin filaments in striated muscle, and, in turn, for regulating the systolic and diastolic contractile function of cardiac muscle. The secondary structure of vertebrate TnC is mainly composed of α-helices, with nine helices named sequentially, starting from the amino terminus, from N to A–H. The N-helix is a 12-residue-long α-helix located at the extreme amino terminus of the protein and is the only helical structure that does not participate in forming Ca²⁺-binding EF-hands. Evolutionarily, the N-helix is found only in TnC from mammalian species and most …
