Lung cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide in 2022, with over 2.5 million new cases, or 1 in 8 of all cancers diagnosed worldwide. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer related mortality in the United States, with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) being the most prevalent type. For early-stage NSCLC, lung resection with anatomic lobectomy remains the standard of care. Robot-assisted lobectomy is gaining popularity over video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) and open thoracotomy due to improved visualization, ergonomics, and instrumentation. Despite these advancements, intraoperative complications and a steep learning curve present significant barriers to the widespread …

The Win Ratio Approach In Bayesian Monitoring For Two-Arm Phase Ii Clinical Trial Designs With Multiple Time-To-Event Endpoints, Xinran Huang, Jian Wang, Jing Ning
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
To assess the preliminary therapeutic impact of a novel treatment, futility monitoring is commonly employed in Phase II clinical trials to facilitate informed decisions regarding the early termination of trials. Given the rapid evolution in cancer treatment development, particularly with new agents like immunotherapeutic agents, the focus has often shifted from objective response to time-to-event endpoints. In trials involving multiple time-to-event endpoints, existing monitoring designs typically select one as the primary endpoint or employ a composite endpoint as the time to the first occurrence of any event. However, relying on a single efficacy endpoint may not adequately evaluate an experimental …

Metaplastic breast cancer (MpBC) is a highly chemoresistant subtype of breast cancer with no standardized therapy options. A clinical study in anthracycline-refractory MpBC patients suggested that nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor NG-monomethyl-l-arginine (L-NMMA) may augment anti-tumor efficacy of taxane. We report that NOS blockade potentiated response of human MpBC cell lines and tumors to phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) inhibitor alpelisib and taxane. Mechanistically, NOS blockade leads to a decrease in the S-nitrosylation of c-Jun NH

Bayesian Nonparametric Model For Heterogeneous Treatment Effects With Zero-Inflated Data, Chanmin Kim, Yisheng Li, Ting Xu, Zhongxing Liao
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
One goal of precision medicine is to develop effective treatments for patients by tailoring to their individual demographic, clinical, and/or genetic characteristics. To achieve this goal, statistical models must be developed that can identify and evaluate potentially heterogeneous treatment effects in a robust manner. The oft-cited existing methods for assessing treatment effect heterogeneity are based upon parametric models with interactions or conditioning on covariate values, the performance of which is sensitive to the omission of important covariates and/or the choice of their values. We propose a new Bayesian nonparametric (BNP) method for estimating heterogeneous causal effects in studies with zero-inflated …

From Hell To Heaven: How Climate Risks Hurt The Poor And Climate Finance Heals Them, Dr. Kangyin Dong, Congyu Zhao, Xiucheng Dong
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
This study explores the global impact of climate finance on wealth and income inequality, utilizing the IV-GMM model to capture nuanced relationships. Key findings indicate that climate finance effectively reduces both forms of inequality, benefiting low-income populations and suggesting it as a viable tool for inequality reduction. Notably, the impact of climate finance is asymmetric: countries with lower initial inequality levels experience more pronounced benefits, while the effect lessens as inequality increases. Additionally, climate risks—represented by natural disasters— worsen inequality, underscoring climate finance’s dual role in directly reducing inequality and indirectly mitigating disaster impacts. These insights offer valuable policy implications, …

Impact Of Covid-19 On International Trade, Paresh Kumar Narayan, Chun Ping Chang, Xin-Xin Zhao
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
Using a global monthly unbalanced panel dataset of 70 countries from January 2020 to May 2023, we first examine the impact of COVID-19 on global trade. The empirical results show a detrimental impact of COVID-19 on countries’ foreign trade, which persists over six months. We evaluate the robustness of our findings by employing an alternative dependent variable and different estimators. Our main findings hold and two features of our results standout: first, that COVID-19 hurt international trade more for non-Asian countries; and second, that sectoral sensitivity to COVID-19 was heterogenous. These results have important policy implications.

Afghan Allies In Limbo: Discrimination In The U.S. Immigration Response, Lindsay M. Harris, Yalda Royan
San Diego Law Review
After the fall of Kabul in August 2021, the U.S. government airlifted an estimated 120,000 people to safety from Afghanistan. An airlift of this scale was unprecedented, but also woefully inadequate as a solution to the Afghan humanitarian crisis. This Article, a contribution to participatory law scholarship, is written by a U.S. law professor and immigration expert and an Afghan woman evacuated from Afghanistan in 2021 and analyzes the United States’s immigration response to the Afghan humanitarian crisis following the Taliban takeover. While the United States granted humanitarian parole for two years to approximately 76,000 individuals, permitting them to enter …

E-cigarette/vaping-associated lung injury (EVALI) is strongly associated with vitamin E acetate and often occurs with concomitant tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) use. To uncover pathways associated with EVALI, we examined cytokines, transcriptomic signatures, and lipidomic profiles in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) from THC-EVALI patients. At a single center, we prospectively enrolled mechanically ventilated patients with EVALI from THC-containing products (N = 4) and patients with non-vaping acute lung injury and airway controls (N = 5). BALF samples were analyzed by Luminex multiplex assay, RNA sequencing, and mass spectrometry. After treating BEAS-2B lung epithelial cells with vaping and non-vaping BALF, LDH release was quantified. …

Background: The advantages of breastfeeding and its role in emergencies are undeniable. Studies show that many women in developed countries choose formula over breastmilk, even in emergencies. Nevertheless, no one knows if postpartum women under the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program turned out to breastfeed or re-lactate their infants during these crises. This study aims to better understand WIC participants' perceptions about breastfeeding their babies in emergencies.
Methods: A chi-square test of independence was used to assess the association between breastfeeding choice and demographic characteristics and potential covariates of respondents. A post hoc analysis using Dunn's multiple comparisons test …

Fentanyl, Narco-Terrorism, And National Security Politics, J. Richard Broughton
San Diego Law Review
This Article examines the use of a counterterrorism model to attack the fentanyl crisis. Rather than advocate for or against such a model, this Article envisions what employing a counterterrorism model against international drug traffickers would look like. Noting the dimensions of national security politics that intersect with counter-fentanyl policy, this Article will evaluate three distinct counterterrorism approaches: (1) using criminal counterterrorism statutes in federal indictments and prosecutions; (2) designating drug trafficking organizations as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs); and (3) authorizing the use of military force against Mexican cartels. While the current state of bellicose national security politics can inform …

The Uses Of The Border, Salvador G. Sarmiento
San Diego Law Review
It is a good and necessary time to discuss “American Law at the Border” to better understand and engage with the politics and laws ostensibly addressing U.S. borders. Let’s hope it is also an exercise in understanding the borders of U.S. law itself—the limits, the periphery, and the jagged edges. A discussion on American law at the border should make clear that what is considered at the margins—starting with migrant labor—is central to U.S. economic, legal, and political life.
The first section of this Article will discuss the political uses of the border, beginning with the most recent example of …

Designing And Manufacturing Low-Cost, Tendon-Driven Soft Robots, Ted Winter-Glasgow, Pablo Borja
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Soft robots have the potential to solve many problems in areas like robotics surgery, human-robot interaction, unmanned exploration tasks, and food harvesting. However, several aspects of soft robotics are still in development, e.g., efficient designs, actuation methods, modeling, and control. This paper provides some designs of tendon-driven soft robots that can be used for educational and research purposes, boosting the understanding of these systems. The proposed designs focus on five features: low manufacturing costs, accessible fabrication methods, simple assembly processes, an open-source approach, and durability.

Manipal Journal of Medical Sciences
Primary Splenic Lymphoma (PSL) is a rare condition, which complicates its understanding and definition. The rarity of PSL has led to varied definitions: some consider it primary only if splenomegaly is predominant, while others include spleen involvement with hilar lymph nodes. Documentation on PSL is sparse in Indian literature. This case report of a 48-year-old woman, presenting with fever, weight loss, and left hypochondrium pain, and diagnosed with PSL through CECT abdomen and USG-guided biopsy, contributes to better understanding of the condition.

Accurate predictions of herbicide dissipation endpoints are essential for making environmental management decisions, estimating the duration of weed control, and deciding crop replant and rotation options. The performance of the single first-order (SFO), first-order multiple-compartment (FOMC), bi-exponential (BEXP), first-order double-exponential decay (FODED), and first-order two-compartment (FOTC) was evaluated to describe S-metolachlor dissipation. Results showed that the BEXP and FOTC were not appropriate. The FODED was ranked as the top model with the lowest Akaike's information criterion (AICc) value among the other three candidate models and was followed by the FOMC model. The SFO displayed the largest root mean square …

Currently there are no effective treatments for an array of neurodegenerative disorders to a large part because cell-based models fail to recapitulate disease. Here we develop a reproducible human iPSC-based model where laser axotomy causes retrograde axon degeneration leading to neuronal cell death. Time-lapse confocal imaging revealed that damage triggers an apoptotic wave of mitochondrial fission proceeding from the site of injury to the soma. We demonstrate that this apoptotic wave is locally initiated in the axon by dual leucine zipper kinase (DLK). We find that mitochondrial fission and resultant cell death are entirely dependent on phosphorylation of dynamin related …

Programmable and modular systems capable of orthogonal genomic and transcriptomic perturbations are crucial for biological research and treating human genetic diseases. Here, we present the minimal versatile genetic perturbation technology (mvGPT), a flexible toolkit designed for simultaneous and orthogonal gene editing, activation, and repression in human cells. The mvGPT combines an engineered compact prime editor (PE), a fusion activator MS2-p65-HSF1 (MPH), and a drive-and-process multiplex array that produces RNAs tailored to different types of genetic perturbation. mvGPT can precisely edit human genome via PE coupled with a prime editing guide RNA and a nicking guide RNA, activate endogenous gene expression …

The bipolar disorder (BD) risk gene ANK3 encodes the scaffolding protein AnkyrinG (AnkG). In neurons, AnkG regulates polarity and ion channel clustering at axon initial segments and nodes of Ranvier. Disruption of neuronal AnkG causes BD-like phenotypes in mice. During development, AnkG is also expressed at comparable levels in oligodendrocytes and facilitates the efficient assembly of paranodal junctions. However, the physiological roles of glial AnkG in the mature nervous system, and its contributions to BD-like phenotypes, remain unexplored. Here, we show that oligodendroglia-specific AnkG conditional knockout results in destabilization of axoglial interactions in aged but not young adult mice. In …
