BAU Journal - Science and Technology
Background: Vitamin D deficiency is widespread across different age groups globally, linking to conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune disorders, and notably type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Investigating the impact of vitamin D on T2DM and associated kidney and liver functions has gained recent attention.
Objective: This study aimed to explore the effect of vitamin D deficiency on kidney and liver functions in T2DM Iraqi patients.
Methods: Fifty T2DM patients and 50 controls were enrolled in this study. Blood samples were analyzed for glucose, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), vitamin D, urea, creatinine, bilirubin, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and alkaline …

The Effect Of Annona Muricata Leaves’ Extract On Wnt Signaling Pathway In Induced Colorectal Cancer In Mice, Layane Massri, Jamilah Borjac, Alaa Matar, Dania Natour
BAU Journal - Science and Technology
Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a significant global health issue. The Wnt signaling pathway, activated by mutations in APC and β-catenin genes, plays a crucial role in CRC development, leading to the activation of inflammatory pathways involving COX-2 and iNOS, as well as the continuous transcription of cell cycle-related genes promoting CRC pathogenesis. Annona muricata (A. muricata), a tropical tree with various biological activities, including anti-cancerous properties, was investigated for its potential effect on mice induced with colon cancer using 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH, 20 mg/kg) over 12 weeks, and treated with oral A. muricata extract (100 mg/kg, 5 days/week).
Methods: Histopathological …

Worldwide, bone fractures are a major public health concern and, there is an urgent requirement to create new treatments to accelerate the rate of the bone healing process. This research mainly relies on creating a hydrogel that satisfies the bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) and makes it a suitable medium to differentiate into osteogenic cells. We combine the BM-MSCs with a chitosan polymer-based hydrogel, infused with PVA to enhance bone healing, this unique mixture forms " Bioink ". We induced a closed fracture model in the rat's right humerus, followed by injection of a single dosage of bioink. On …

Debunking Misperceptions: The Interfaith Dental Program, Colette Smiley
West Michigan District Dental Society Bulletin
When thousands of Afghans were evacuated to the U.S. in 2021, they brought resilience, hope—and an urgent need for dental care. Recognizing this, Christ Church Cranbrook, the Muslim Unity Center, and partners like Delta Dental came together to create the Interfaith Dental Program. The Interfaith Dental Program supports general dentists and dental specialists so they can offer their services to provide needed dental care not covered by insurance or Medicaid.

A study was conducted to assess the use of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) by dentists in Virginia and the factors influencing its adoption. The survey revealed that recent dental school graduates and those with adequate training were more likely to use SDF. SDF is valued for its ability to arrest caries and provide a minimally invasive treatment option, especially for patients with behavioral issues or severe dental anxiety. However, its use is deterred by concerns over aesthetics and effectiveness. The study highlights the need for increased training and better reimbursement to encourage wider adoption of SDF among dentists in Virginia.

Most Americans rely on Social Security for retirement support, but many do not fully understand the implications of when to start receiving benefits. Claiming benefits early at age 62 can reduce the overall amount, while delaying can increase it by 8% annually. Factors like health, life expectancy, and income needs should be considered. Full retirement age is between 66 and 67 for most. Widows and divorced individuals may be eligible for additional benefits. Consulting with an advisor is recommended to optimize Social Security benefits.

Hot Wages: How Do Heat Waves Change The Earnings Distribution?, Giulia Valenti, Francesco Vona
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
We investigate the impact of heat waves on individual earnings using retrospective panel data (SHARE) matched with high-resolution weather data (E-OBS), covering over 32000 workers across 14 European countries (1955–2019) from diverse sectors and occupations. Exploiting plausibly exogenous variation in heat wave exposure across cohorts within the same generation and region, and controlling for individual fixed effects, occupational sorting, and covariate balance, we find each additional heat wave day reduces earnings by 0.31%. Losses are larger in outdoor, manual, and clerical occupations, disproportionately affecting lower-income workers and those from disadvantaged family backgrounds, but are mitigated in countries with centralized collective …

Navigating Wound Closure Strategies: Primary Closure Vs. Delayed Primary Closure In Digestive Surgery—A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis On Surgical Site Infections, Lam Sihardo, Arnetta Nl Lalisang, Afid B. Putra, Bagus A. Suryawiditya
The New Ropanasuri Journal of Surgery
Introduction. Surgical site infection (SSI) is a significant concern following digestive surgery, with varying incidence rates based on wound contamination levels. The choice between Primary Closure (PC) and Delayed Primary Closure (DPC) impacts SSI occurrence, making it essential to evaluate their comparative effectiveness. DPC is hypothesized superior to PC to prevent SSI or wound infection after a contaminated abdominal surgery.
Methods. This systematic review study was carried out through PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane (CENTRAL). Quality was assessed using Risk of Bias (ROB-2) tool. All results were summarized, and quantitative analysis was performed using a random-effect model. This study …

The New Ropanasuri Journal of Surgery
Introduction. Abdominal aortic pseudoaneurysm caused by autoimmune vasculitis is a rare complication. Clinical presentation of patients is often late with life–threatening complications.
Case Illustration: A 62–year–old male patient with infrarenal abdominal aortic pseudoaneurysm presenting with a 2–week worsening severe abdominal and lumbar pain with a history of uncontrolled hypertension and a history of oral ulcer. He was successfully treated with tube grafting through open surgical repair.
Conclusion: The pseudoaneurysm was successfully removed and replaced with a polyester tube graft with no perioperative complications and was discharged 5 days later
