Human–Wildlife Interactions
Coyotes (Canis latrans) have expanded in mainland eastern North America and are known to have successfully colonized numerous islands. However, there are scarce data on the densities of coyotes in these ecosystems, in which coyotes can have substantive negative impacts. Coyotes first colonized Sanibel Island, a barrier island off the western coast of Florida, USA, in 2011, and their presence has been linked to declines in several sensitive species. However, the population size of coyotes has only been estimated from anecdotal reports and camera traps. Our goal was to estimate the size of the coyote population on Sanibel …

Cost-Effective Strategies For Feral Swine Control: Exploring Trapping Equipment Cooperatives, Phil Kenkel, Riza Radmehr, Rodney Holcomb, Mckenzie Boyce
Human–Wildlife Interactions
Feral swine (Sus scrofa) in the United States have become a growing concern, with a population of ≥6 million and causing annual damages of ≥$1.5 billion USD. Because of their high reproductive capacity, effective control methods are crucial to reducing or slowing their population growth. While remotely monitored and triggered traps have proven to be an effective control strategy, the cost of sophisticated trapping equipment, which can cost ≥$7,000 USD, is often cost prohibitive for many landowners. Despite the pressing need to address the challenge of making effective feral swine control methods more affordable, there are few studies …

Refine Fuels Treatments In The Wildland–Urban Interface With Wildlife In Mind, Miles Becker, Catrin M. Edgeley, David Stoner
Human–Wildlife Interactions
Conserving urban tree and shrub cover provides many benefits for wildlife and people, yet often becomes a lower priority than fuels treatments to mitigate fire risk in the wildland–urban interface (WUI). We support the principle that considering multiple objectives on privately owned property is valuable and can be achieved. Data sharing and collaboration between wildfire experts and wildlife biologists could improve the quality and extent of managing both animals and fire. Furthermore, the adoption of statewide policy and municipal regulations for preventing wildfires in the WUI provides an opportunity to incorporate ecological functions in the same directives for a balanced …

Of Labor, Antitrust, And Why The Proposed House Settlement Will Not Solve The Ncaa’S Problem, Marc Edelman, Michael A. Carrier
Fordham Law Review
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) recently settled three antitrust lawsuits. With a significant payout, it hopes to put its antitrust worries behind it. In doing so, the NCAA seeks to follow in the footsteps of the National Football League (NFL), which has enjoyed thirty years of labor peace. But there is a big difference between these two situations. The NFL’s 1993 settlement in White v. National Football League was shielded from antitrust scrutiny by the nonstatutory labor exemption, which encourages collective bargaining activity. No such exemption protects the NCAA’s settlement. This Essay explains why the NCAA cannot establish a …

The Role Of Psychological Capital On Organisational Citizenship Behaviours Within The Ghanaian Public Sector: A Conservation Of Resources Perspective., Duke Debrah Afrane
The Role Of Psychological Capital On Organisational Citizenship Behaviours Within The Ghanaian Public Sector: A Conservation Of Resources Perspective., Duke Debrah Afrane
Doctoral
The public sector of Ghana has been plagued with low productivity issues for over a decade. Psychological capital is a resource that can increase citizenship behaviours, which help to boost productivity. Conservation of resources theory provides a mechanism for explaining the role that psychological capital plays in encouraging organisational citizenship behaviours. This mechanism is reflected in the value of psychological capital among employees and context-specific factors within the omnibus and discrete contexts of the Ghanaian public sector. The thesis explored this through a two-phase research method. Firstly, employing semi-structured interviews to explore the value of psychological capital, and identify perception …

Differences In Cellular And Humoral Immune Responses To A Primary And Secondary Immunization With Herpesvirus Of Turkey (Hvt) Vaccine In Layer Pullets, Allie K. Bowerman, Chrysta N. Beck, Jossie M. Santamaria, Gisela F. Erf
2025 Research Poster Competition
In poultry production, chickens are routinely vaccinated with live herpesvirus vaccines for protection from lymphoma causing Marek’s disease virus. However, information on the immune responses to these vaccines is limited. This study examined cellular and antibody responses to primary and secondary vaccinations with herpesvirus of turkey (HVT). Six unvaccinated 9-wk-old, and six HVT-vaccinated (s.c. at hatch) 19-wk-old, layer pullets received a first (V1) or a second (V2) HVT vaccination, respectively, by intradermal injection of HVT-vaccine into the pulp of growing feathers (GFs; 10 µL/GF; 16 GFs/bird). GFs were collected before (0h), and at 0.25, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, and …

Leukocyte Infiltration Profiles At The Site Of Intradermal Injection Of Silikon-1000 In Scleroderma-Prone Ucd200/206 And Healthy White Leghorn Chickens, Katee L. Johnson, Jossie M. Santamaria, Chrysta N. Beck, Gisela F. Erf
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
Intradermal injections of silicone-based fillers for the face and body may cause chronic inflammation and fibrotic reactions in some individuals. Chickens from the UCD 200/206 White Leghorn (WL) line spontaneously develop a fibrotic autoimmune disease known as scleroderma/systemic sclerosis (SSc). Using the SSc-prone UCD and healthy WL chickens, a longitudinal study was conducted to examine the cellular inflammatory responses to intradermal (i.d.) injections of sterile SILIKON-1000. Specifically, the pulp (a skin derivative) of growing feathers (GFs) was i.d. injected with sterile SILIKON-1000 or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) as injection control (8 and 3 birds/line, respectively; 10 µL/GF; 20 GFs/bird). Two GFs …

Precision Haptics For Rehabilitation: Quantifying Directional Bias And Force Threshold Effects On Motor Learning, Conor J. Nolan
Precision Haptics For Rehabilitation: Quantifying Directional Bias And Force Threshold Effects On Motor Learning, Conor J. Nolan
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Hand rehabilitation represents a critical challenge in modern physical therapy, with significant implications for patients' quality of life and functional independence. Despite technological advancements across healthcare, traditional hand assessment methods often rely on subjective measures or lack task-specific biomechanical assessment capabilities. This thesis investigates the effects of haptic force feedback, handedness, and rotation direction on circle-tracing task completion using a within-subjects factorial design with 20 university participants examining varying resistance levels (0.0N, 0.5N, 1.2N) across different movement configurations using a 3D Systems Touch X haptic device with 0.023mm precision. Results demonstrate that moderate haptic force (0.5N) significantly enhanced spatial accuracy …
Impact Of An Online Teaching Faculty Development Course On Student Social Engagement, Preston P. Bennett
Impact Of An Online Teaching Faculty Development Course On Student Social Engagement, Preston P. Bennett
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Ample evidence supports the impact of greater student social engagement on student success outcomes, particularly for first time in college freshmen students (Avison et al., 2007; Tinto, 1997; Wilcox et al., 2005). Keeping students engaged socially online can be challenging for some faculty due to reliance on strategies that worked previously within face-to-face environments (McQuiggan, 2012). At the University of North Florida, a Teaching Online (TOL) certification course provides instructors with evidence-based online pedagogy aimed at bolstering social engagement.
This dissertation investigated whether and how faculty implementation of TOL design principles impacted freshmen students’ social engagement with both peers and …
Parental Sources Of Nutrition Information And Their Knowledge, Attitudes, And Behaviors: Impact On Children's Dietary Intake In Ages 2-5 – A Cross-Sectional Study, Mara O. Fiorio
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Objectives: Nutrition in early childhood is critical to long-term health outcomes and parents play a key role in shaping children’s eating habits. This study examined where U.S. parents of children aged 2–5 obtain nutrition information, source credibility, and how parental nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors (KAB) relate to children’s dietary intake.
Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was completed by 126 parents, recruited via social media and community networks using convenience sampling. The survey assessed parental sources of nutrition information, perceived trustworthiness, nutrition knowledge, feeding attitudes and behaviors, and child dietary intake. Descriptive statistics summarized demographic characteristics and source utilization. Chi-square …
Improving Visual Inspection Performance During Pre-Flight Visual Inspections By Aircraft Maintenance Technicians., Patrick Codd
Improving Visual Inspection Performance During Pre-Flight Visual Inspections By Aircraft Maintenance Technicians., Patrick Codd
Doctoral
Visual inspection is a critical task in aircraft maintenance and is the predominant inspection technique used in the global aviation sector. For safety reasons, visual inspections by Aircraft Maintenance Technicians are routinely conducted on a daily basis during pre-flight inspections. Its significance becomes evident when considering the potential consequences of Aircraft Maintenance Technicians not seeing observable defects during visual inspections. For example, an aircraft crash landing in 1989 resulted in 111 fatalities and was attributed to a visual inspection failure. The industrial quality control literature also illustrates the varying accuracy for the observation of defects and hazards, underscoring the inherent …
Generational Perspective Of Financial Literacy And Consumer Over-Indebtedness. Survey Evidence From Poland, Beata Świecka
Generational Perspective Of Financial Literacy And Consumer Over-Indebtedness. Survey Evidence From Poland, Beata Świecka
Journal of Banking and Financial Economics
Background and purpose of the article: The main aim of the article is to present financial literacy (FL) and consumer over-indebtedness (OI) according to the primary survey in Poland. The auxiliary aim is to analyse the importance of financial literacy in reducing consumer over-indebtedness from a generational perspective. Over-indebtedness is a significant problem in personal finance because it leads to a situation in which household members cannot settle their financial obligations on time, negatively affecting their economic stability and prospects for long-term financial security (D’Alessio, Iezzi, 2013). It is becoming increasingly common in the country and around the world. It …

Is Knowledge Really Power And Ignorance Bliss? A Study Of Financial And Pension Ignorance, Agata Olechnowicz-Szewczyk, Elżbieta Babula
Journal of Banking and Financial Economics
In this study, we examine the impact of financial and pension ignorance (information avoidance) on the decisionmaking process for long-term savings. We define the concept of pension ignorance, as active avoidance of retirement information, failure to make decisions regarding retirement savings, and a lack of strategic retirement planning. To assess financial ignorance, we utilized the scale developed by Barrafrem et al. (2024), while pension ignorance was evaluated using the scale designed by the authors. The study was conducted with a sample of 1,200 Polish residents aged 18 to 65, using the Computer-Assisted Web Interviewing (CAWI) method. The findings reveal that …

Personal Characteristics And Retirement Intentions (Empirical Evidence From Poland), Patrycja Kowalczyk-Rólczyńska, Madgalena Swacha-Lech, Łukasz Jurek
Journal of Banking and Financial Economics
Retirement intentions depend on a number of different factors. The aim of this paper is to assess the impact of personal characteristics on the willingness to retire as soon as possible among older workers in Poland. The data were collected through a CAWI survey conducted in 2021 among a representative sample of workers aged 50 and over. Statistical analysis was based on logit model. Identified predictors are: age, education, fear about the financial situation in retirement, the use of free time after retirement, and lack time to pursue passions due to work. Those results provide suggestions for strengthening active ageing …
Financial Vs Psychological Wellbeing Of Generations X, Y, And Z Consumers In Poland, Mirosława Kaczmarek
Financial Vs Psychological Wellbeing Of Generations X, Y, And Z Consumers In Poland, Mirosława Kaczmarek
Journal of Banking and Financial Economics
Empirical research confirms that the financial behaviour of consumers differs from generation to generation – in terms of saving, spending money and also the use of credit. The main objective of this article is to determine the level of financial wellbeing and the relation between psychological wellbeing and financial wellbeing across three consumer age cohorts – generations X, Y and Z in Poland. To achieve this, a CAWI survey was conducted using the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau scale and the Ryff’s Psychological Wellbeing Scale. The results of the F-test show that although generational belonging does not statistically significantly differentiate financial …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Background and Objective: Automatic generation of medical reports reduces both the burden on radiologists and the possibility of errors due to the inexperience of radiologists. The model that utilizes attention mechanism and contrastive learning can generate medical reports by capturing both general and specific semantics. However, existing contrastive learning methods ignore the specificity of medical data, that is, a patient may suffer from multiple diseases at the same time. This means that the lack of fine-grained relationships for contrastive learning will lead to the problem of insufficient specificity. Methods: To address the above problem, a label correlated contrastive learning method …
