Doctor of Education Capstones

The study abroad experience, often credited with providing an inclusive learning opportunity, has the transformative potential to expand students' worldviews, enrich their academic experiences, and foster cross-cultural understanding. This study examines the Global Education Office (GEO) at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and its efforts to increase institutional support, student awareness, and engagement with study abroad programs. The study explores barriers to participation and perceptions of value through secondary analysis of GEO’s post-program student surveys and primary data from a faculty, staff, and academic advisor survey. Guided by Wigfield’s Expectancy-Value Theory and Perry’s Theory of Intellectual and Ethical Development, the research …

The Permanent Supportive Housing Of Central Virginia’S Aged Out Foster Youths: The Permanent Supportive Housing Of Central Virginia’S Aged Out Foster Youths A Plan To Increase Regional Capacity, Fill Gaps In Service, And Identify Potential Sites., Matthew Snow

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Capstone Projects

As of 2024, Virginia’s Central Region continues to produce one of the highest rates of foster care emancipations in the state, despite having minimal infrastructure to support young adults transitioning out of care. Each year, dozens of foster youth in the region age out of the system without reunification, adoption, or other forms of permanency, disproportionately entering adulthood without the stability of housing, employment, or accessible services. Although permanent supportive housing (PSH) has emerged as a nationally validated model for housing and service integration, few PSH developments in Virginia are designed specifically for aged-out foster youth or their families.

Aligning Practice With Principle: Institutionalizing Equitable Public Engagement In Hampton Roads, W. Derek Martin

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Capstone Projects

This plan assesses the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission (HRPDC) and Transportation Planning Organization’s (HRTPO) current engagement processes through internal document reviews, national best-practice benchmarking, and key staff interviews. Among thee identified strengths of sound procedural compliance and deep staff commitment and agility, findings revealed three critical gaps: (1) limited decision-traceability, (2) inconsistent process evaluation, and (3) persistent constraints collectively impacting their geographic reach and efficacy of their Community Advisory Committee. To address these gaps, the study delivers the Community Engagement Compass—a five-dimension checklist (accessibility, quality, inclusivity, transparency, adaptability) that standardizes best principles such as equity metrics, real-time evaluations, …

Crater Pdc Community Identity & Assets: Foundations For Future Branding And Economic Development, Lydia M. Schauss

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Capstone Projects

This project examines how the Crater Planning District Commission (CPDC) can develop a cohesive community identity through regional branding. Spanning eleven localities in Virginia, the CPDC faces challenges related to fragmented identity, under-leveraged assets, and limited community engagement across its jurisdictions. Through a review of thirty-two planning documents and two rounds of stakeholder focus groups, this research identifies common strengths, recurring issues, and shared aspirations across the region.

The analysis highlights quality of life—defined by affordability, rural character, and community connection—as a central theme. From these findings, the project proposes a branding framework rooted in Asset-Based Community Development and inclusive …

Exploring The Role Of Government Funding And Policy Criteria In Greening Projects: A Case Study Of Southside Richmond, Destiny R. Brown Jan 2025

Exploring The Role Of Government Funding And Policy Criteria In Greening Projects: A Case Study Of Southside Richmond, Destiny R. Brown

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Capstone Projects

This thesis explores how government and private funding structures and policy criteria influence community-based organizations (CBOs) engaged in urban greening projects, focusing on Southside Richmond, Virginia through a case study of a local CBO. Using a multi-method approach including document analysis, secondary data review, and autoethnographic reflection, the research suggests a gap between visibility and influence for CBOs, showing that their decision-making authority often varies while they are publicly recognized. The study also reveals that public documentation of funders' community engagement is often performative or symbolic rather than structurally embedded in decision-making processes. In addition, funding remains a barrier, with …

Public Transportation As A Vehicle For Upward Mobility Of Women In Appalachian Virginia, Katy Miller Jan 2025

Public Transportation As A Vehicle For Upward Mobility Of Women In Appalachian Virginia, Katy Miller

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Capstone Projects

Gender and geography are intersecting identities that can affect transportation access and therefore upward mobility. Mobility in rural areas is restricted by economic, temporal, and spatial limitations, as well as infrastructure accessibility. Gendered differences in mobility patterns influence the ability of women to utilize public transportation systems. There is a lack of consideration of rural women in transportation research and planning.

This paper seeks to understand the accessibility of public transportation systems in rural areas to women and how it can contribute to their upward mobility, by studying the Four County Transit system in Appalachian Virginia. Population demographics, current system …

“Behavior Modeling And Creative Confidence In The High School Visual Arts Classroom”, Jessica A. Novak Jan 2025

“Behavior Modeling And Creative Confidence In The High School Visual Arts Classroom”, Jessica A. Novak

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Artistic behavior modeling is essential for the development of creative confidence in both the teacher and students. In this study, I adopted a mixed methods approach incorporating both qualitative and quantitative data to determine the impact of artistic behavior modeling on creativity and independence in high school visual arts. The impact of behavior modeling was studied in a student-led, studio-style approach in the classroom. Utilizing writing prompts, observational data, self-reflections, artwork development, and letter grades, I determined that when educators create and reflect on their personal art alongside their students, students become more creatively independent. Students took more creative risks, …

A Comprehensive Labeling Framework For Artificial Intelligence (Ai)/Machine Learning (Ml)-Based Medical Devices: From Ai Facts Labels To A Front-Of-Package Ai Labeling System — Lessons Learned From Food Labeling, Sara Gerke

Emory Law Journal

Medical Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming healthcare. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has already authorized the marketing of over one thousand AI/Machine Learning (ML)-based medical devices, and many more products are in the development pipeline. However, despite this fast development, the regulatory framework for AI/ML-based medical devices could be improved. This Article focuses on the labeling for AI/ML-based medical devices, a crucial topic that needs to receive more attention in the legal literature and from regulators like the FDA. The current lack of labeling standards tailored explicitly to AI/ML-based medical devices is an obstacle to transparency in …

The Revolution Continues: Revitalizing The Implied Warranty Of Habitability With Presumed General Damages, Thomas Furlong Jr. Jan 2025

The Revolution Continues: Revitalizing The Implied Warranty Of Habitability With Presumed General Damages, Thomas Furlong Jr.

Emory Law Journal

Emerging out of the tenants’ rights revolution, the implied warranty of habitability has been in effect for over fifty years. Its direct purpose is to provide relief to low-income renters living in substandard conditions who held no bargaining power within the housing market, and thus, could not ensure landlords provided safe and habitable conditions. Unfortunately, the landlord–tenant dynamic remains one of drastic inequality, and millions of low-income renters continue to live in substandard conditions. Most glaringly, the housing market reflects a worsening affordable housing crisis—a crisis that landlords have used to turn a profit. Thus, the very circumstances that gave …

Dancing Around The Double-Edged Sword: Understanding The Role Of The Funding Agreement In Texas Two-Step Dismissals, Lauren T. Weinsier Jan 2025

Dancing Around The Double-Edged Sword: Understanding The Role Of The Funding Agreement In Texas Two-Step Dismissals, Lauren T. Weinsier

Emory Law Journal

Since 1984, Chapter 11 has emerged as a forum of choice for mass tortfeasors to satisfy their liabilities. More recently, businesses have employed a state law maneuver known as the “Texas Two-Step,” whereby the “old debtor” parent company creates a “new debtor” subsidiary that assumes responsibility for all outstanding tort claims and subsequently files for Chapter 11 relief. The parent company or its healthy affiliates provide a funding agreement to backstop creditor repayment and the costs of the case but otherwise stay on the sidelines.

Section 1112(b) of the United States Bankruptcy Code determines whether Texas Two-Step debtors may enter …

Alexander And The Influence Of Aretē, Alex Toupal Jan 2025

Alexander And The Influence Of Aretē, Alex Toupal

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines Alexander III of Macedon through the lens of aretē, the Greek ideal of excellence. Rather than viewing his ambition only as a longing (pothos) for exploration, it argues that Alexander’s drive is best understood as a competitive pursuit to embody and surpass the highest standards of his age. The study traces the development of aretē from its Homeric roots to Aristotle’s philosophical refinement, then situates Alexander’s actions within the cultural ideals of the Macedonian court and the wider Hellenic world. Using primary accounts and modern scholarship, it explores how Alexander measured himself against legendary and historical figures …

Defending "Second-Party" Releases In Mass Tort Bankruptcies, Brook E. Gotberg, Annette W. Jarvis Jan 2025

Defending "Second-Party" Releases In Mass Tort Bankruptcies, Brook E. Gotberg, Annette W. Jarvis

Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal

The Bankruptcy Code enables corporate debtors to restructure their debts, including liability for tort damages. Recovery from an insolvent debtor poses daunting collective action problems for tort victims. By creating and funding a trust in bankruptcy, the liable company can streamline settlement and distribute available assets to give all claimants—including individuals who have been harmed by the company’s past activity but are not yet aware of the harm—an aliquot portion of available funds.

Frequently, tort damages levied against a bankrupt company implicate not only the debtor but other related parties, like the company’s insurers, directors and officers, corporate affiliates, and …

Full Discharge Ahead? An Empirical First Look At The New Student Loan Discharge Process In Bankruptcy, Belisa Pang, Dalié Jiménez, Matthew Adam Bruckner

Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal

The legal framework for discharging student loan debt held by bankruptcy filers cases changed in November 2022 with the Biden Administration’s Department of Justice issuing its “Guidance for Department Attorneys Regarding Student Loan Bankruptcy Litigation,” fundamentally altering the legal framework for discharging student loan debt in bankruptcy cases. The Guidance aims to enhance consistency and equity by: (1) ensuring transparent and consistent expectations; (2) reducing the burden on debtors; and (3) making it easier for DOJ attorneys to recommend discharging a debtor’s student loans. The DOJ has touted the new Guidance as having “made a real difference in borrowers’ lives,” …

The Changing Shape Of Support In The Work Of Port Chaplains, Wendy Cadge, Nelson Turgo, Helen Sampson Jan 2025

The Changing Shape Of Support In The Work Of Port Chaplains, Wendy Cadge, Nelson Turgo, Helen Sampson

Sociology Faculty Research and Scholarship

This article draws on historical and ethnographic data from port chaplains working with the Mission to Seamen/Seafarers in the United Kingdom in the 1950s and the 2010s to chart a shift in the shape of that work. Relationships with seafarers are at the core of the work in both decades. We describe this work through individual support for seafarers, work around death, support for community building, and religious gatherings and events. While we find evidence for each of these components of the work in each decade, there is a clear shift in the shape of pastoral or caring work which …

Examining Cognitive Functioning And Digital Technology Engagement, Kylie Fraga Jan 2025

Examining Cognitive Functioning And Digital Technology Engagement, Kylie Fraga

Clinical Psychology Dissertations

Using technology to complete instrumental activities of daily living (T-IADLs) reflects adaptive technology use, while absentminded smartphone use (AMSU) reflects maladaptive technology use. Examining the link between cognitive functioning and distinct forms of technology use can inform clinical strategies for optimizing technology use for individuals with cognitive difficulties and assist in digital design recommendations that align with diverse cognitive needs. This study examined associations between cognitive functioning (objective and subjective) and distinct forms of technology behaviors (T-IADLs and AMSU) within a sample of 93 adults (Mage = 52.6, SD = 16.93; 62% female) recruited from neuropsychology private practice clinics in …
