Seahorsedad: A Study Of Metaphors In Transmasculine Birther’S Instagram Posts, Alexa Anne Runnion
Seahorsedad: A Study Of Metaphors In Transmasculine Birther’S Instagram Posts, Alexa Anne Runnion
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Dominant notions of pregnancy frame gestation as a solely female process. However, the experiences of transmasculine birthers challenge this assumption, demonstrating that pregnancy is not inherently tied to womanhood but is instead shaped by social and cultural narratives and representations. This paper explores the unique pregnancy and parental exercises of transmasculine birthers by examining public social media posts under the hashtag #seahorsedad on Instagram. Utilizing metaphorical criticism, I aim to uncover how transmasculine birthers, known within the community as “seahorse dads,” both uphold and resist traditional notions of gender, pregnancy, and parenting through a combination of textual and visual metaphor. …
Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Nutrient Limitation In A Western Montana River, Matthew T. Nichols
Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Nutrient Limitation In A Western Montana River, Matthew T. Nichols
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Enhanced loading of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) is pervasive in rivers around the world. As a consequence of nutrient-rich conditions, many well-lit rivers experience severe algal blooms, which threaten water quality and aquatic habitats. Nutrient enrichment in the upper Clark Fork River, located in western Montana, has increased the productivity of benthic algae, Cladophora glomerata, which routinely forms extensive blooms during summer growing seasons (July – September). Addressing eutrophication in rivers begins with identifying the nutrients that contribute toward algal productivity. I deployed nutrient diffusing substrates (NDS), collected bi-weekly surface water samples, and conducted algal surveys at four …

Increasing Nature Connection And Decreasing Climate Change Distress In An Indigenous Population: The Development Of A Traditional Ecological Knowledge Intervention Framework, Olathe Antonio
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Research suggests that nature connection is positively correlated with pro-environmental behaviors, concern for the climate, general wellbeing, and subjective levels of climate change distress. Few research studies have examined how to increase nature connectedness without increasing psychological distress. Such research is especially important for those who are disproportionately affected by climate change such as Indigenous Peoples. To address this discrepancy, we developed a culturally-grounded psychological intervention framework based in traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) for Indigenous populations and offered an adapted example for a Navajo population. The intervention was created in collaboration with TEK experts to conceptualize key psychologically-relevant TEK principles, …

Indigenous Placemaking, Colonial Placetaking, And Indigenous Data Sovereignty: Implications Of Environmental Data Collection On Tribal Lands, Paige Nizhonii Kya'iyo Johnson
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This project investigates how Indigenous Data Sovereignty protocols apply to environmental data collected on Tribal lands by federal and state entities. The 2011 and 2014 flooding of the Missouri River and a need for further soil moisture data led the United States Army Corps of Engineers Omaha District to implement a Mesonet weather station monitoring network across the Upper Missouri River Basin (UMRB). Historically, the Army Corps of Engineers has not included Indigenous perspectives into their decision-making, and this has caused Tribes to be distrustful of partnerships with them. The UMRB monitoring network will span across the Upper Missouri River …

Predicting Language And Literacy Success In Children With And Without Developmental Language Disorder, Melissa Catherine Phelan
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The purpose of this study was to investigate the roles of phonological, orthographic, and morphological awareness in predicting language and literacy success for children with developmental language disorder (DLD), DLD with dyslexia, and typically developing (TD) children. DLD, a prevalent yet underdiagnosed condition, is associated with significant psychosocial and academic challenges, including a roughly 50% likelihood of developing dyslexia. Current identification systems rely on inconsistent parent/teacher referrals, which miss approximately 60% of children with DLD and over 33% with dyslexia, limiting access to effective interventions. This study longitudinally examines whether kindergarten screenings of three metalinguistic skills—phonological, orthographic, and morphological awareness—predict …
Designing A Behavior-Supportive Literacy Block Using Ufli Phonics For First Grade Students With Behavioral Challenges, Julia Lynne Pugh
Designing A Behavior-Supportive Literacy Block Using Ufli Phonics For First Grade Students With Behavioral Challenges, Julia Lynne Pugh
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Students with behavioral challenges tend to struggle while engaging with structured academic instruction, particularly in foundational literacy blocks. In fact, in 2021, it was reported that 27.7% of children aged 3-17 struggle with a mental, behavioral, or developmental disorder. (Leeb et al., 2024) While programs such as UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Institute) offer highly effective phonics instruction, these programs typically lack embedded support for individuals struggling with self-regulation, attention, and task persistence. As a result, these students are presented with a higher risk of falling behind in their reading skills. In this project, the author aims to develop a …
Hormonal Decay After Death: Evaluating Dhea-S As A Potential Molecular Marker For Postmortem Estimation, Marisa Lydia Novak
Hormonal Decay After Death: Evaluating Dhea-S As A Potential Molecular Marker For Postmortem Estimation, Marisa Lydia Novak
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Post-mortem interval (PMI) estimation is a central component of forensic anthropological investigation, but traditional methods for estimating time since death lose accuracy after ~72 hours. Recent research indicates that some steroid hormones may undergo predictable degradation patterns after death, offering potential use as biochemical clocks for PMI estimation beyond this threshold. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and its sulfate form (DHEA-S) are of particular interest due to their metabolic stability, systemic influence, and association with trauma. This study investigates whether DHEA-S hormonal degradation patterns correlate with time elapsed since death and body temperature, evaluating their potential as biochemical PMI markers. 160 mL of …

Polyelectrolyte brushes consist of a set of charged linear macromolecules, each tethered at one end to a surface. An example is the glycocalyx which refers to hair-like negatively charged sugar molecules that coat the outside membrane of all cells. We consider the transport and equilibrium distribution of ions and the resulting electrical potential when such a brush is immersed in a salt buffer containing monovalent cations (sodium and/or potassium). The Gouy-Chapman model for ion screening at a charged surface captures the effects of the Coulombic force that drives ion electrophoresis and diffusion but neglects non-Coulombic forces and ion pairing. By …

Online Parameter Adaptation Of Lqr Controllers Via Rls For Prosthetic Joint Control: Experimental Validation On A Quanser Qube-Servo 2 Platform, Cynthia Lopez-Jordan
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis develops and experimentally validates an online adaptive Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) control method for prosthetic joint systems using Recursive Least Squares (RLS)-based real-time parameter estimation on the Quanser QUBE-Servo 2 platform. Traditional LQR controllers assume a fxed system model, which limits adaptability and results in reduced tracking accuracy, poor robustness, and loss of optimal performance when applied to dynamically changing prosthetic joints, infuenced by load variations, user gait changes, and mechanical wear. Limited experimental validation exists for combining RLS with online LQR adaptation in prosthetic-like systems.
To address these limitations, an RLS-driven Adaptive LQR framework was implemented to …
From Curiosity To Controversy: American Perception Of Japanese Immigrants, 1853-1924, Chloe Elizabeth Curbelo
From Curiosity To Controversy: American Perception Of Japanese Immigrants, 1853-1924, Chloe Elizabeth Curbelo
Theses and Dissertations
In the mid-nineteenth century, as the United States reached the Pacific through westward expansion, Asia emerged as a new stage for commerce and power. Japan, long isolated under the Tokugawa shogunate, became an object of American fascination when forced into relations. While early depictions cast Japan as an exotic yet uncivilized nation in need of Western guidance, Japan’s rapid modernization and the growing number of Japanese immigrants on the West Coast transformed curiosity into anxiety. My paper traces this evolution of perception from 1850 to 1924, arguing that shifting views of Japan and its people reflected America’s ethnocentric notions of …

Artemis missions are set to send the next man and the first woman back to the moon and enable long-term missions on the lunar surface. However, exposure to lunar gravity has significant physiological effects characterized by loss of muscle mass, weakness and decreased bone density. Nutraceutical countermeasures such as Resveratrol (RSV), a naturally occurring polyphenol, have been identified as promising strategies to preserve musculoskeletal health; however, its pleiotropic effect hinders our ability to identify the primary cellular pathways through which it delivers its benefits. Furthermore, its efficacy in simulated lunar gravity is unknown. Based on the benefits observed with RSV …

“Democracy,” Usa, Marc Edelman
Publications and Research
What does it mean to be an effective citizen in a democracy? Answering this question requires unpacking “democracy” and an analysis of institutions that systematically disempower and alienate citizens. This paper briefly examines the contributions of psychoanalysis to understanding democracy and authoritarianism. It scrutinizes U.S. governance institutions and points to democratic deficits and backsliding present even before Trump 1.0 and 2.0. These range from the Electoral College, the Senate, and the Supreme Court to the Federal Communications Commission. All contributed to institutionalizing minority rule and elite capture. Governance institutions failed to deliver what the American people tell opinion pollsters they …

Augmenting Missing Sensor Data For Robust Human Activity Recognition, Suryakangeyan Kandasamy Gowdaman
Master's Projects
Applications of ubiquitous computing, including health monitoring, sports analytics, and ambient-assisted living, rely on Human Activity Recognition (HAR) using wearable sensors. However, model robustness is challenged by missing sensor values, class imbalance, inter-subject variability, and temporal noise. This work proposes a complete HAR pipeline that addresses these challenges through sampling, time-series augmentation, dynamic feature handling, and GAN-PCA-based imputation. Built on the DeepSense architecture, the model integrates convolutional feature extraction with bi-GRUs for temporal modeling. The system is evaluated using 5-fold cross-validation, subject-aware holdout, and LOSEO strategies on the Opportunity dataset. Results demonstrate consistent accuracy across folds and strong generalization to …
Energy Considerations For Large Pre-Trained Neural Networks, Leo Mei
Energy Considerations For Large Pre-Trained Neural Networks, Leo Mei
Master's Projects
In recent years, neural network models have achieved phenomenal performance due to the increasing parameters and complexity of model architectures. However, these advancements come with high environmental costs as they require massive computational resources and consume substantial amounts of electricity, leading to high carbon emissions. Previous studies have demonstrated that substantial redundancies exist in large pre-trained models, and reducing these redundancies through compression would not compromise model performance. While these studies focused on retaining comparable model performance, the direct impact of compression on energy consumption when training models appears to have received little attention. By quantifying the energy usage associated …

Master's Projects
Optical networks transport data encoded on light signals over optical fiber cables. Individual optical networks are managed by domain administrators, such as service providers, vendors, or regional bodies. Multidomain optical networking explores the possibility of enabling seamless data transmission across domain boundaries. In this project, we explore how we can perform network monitoring in a hierarchical multidomain optical network while preserving domain security and autonomy. This is done by allocating dedicated monitoring trails across various broker abstractions of our network topologies. We propose three heuristic functions that expedite trail selection. Of the three heuristics, our least monitored algorithm performs the …
