Effect Of Non-Complicated Cataract Extraction With Phacoemulsification On Central Macular Thickness (Cmt) And Ganglion Cell Complex (Gcc) In Non-Diabetic Patients At Sohag Teaching Hospital, Mohammed Shikhoun Ahmed, Mariam Kamal

Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research

Background: Cataracts are widely acknowledged as the primary cause of blindness on a global scale. Cataract surgery, particularly phacoemulsification, is the most effective and the only approved intervention for cataracts, regardless of etiology. Phacoemulsification, with its numerous advantages, is the most widely used method for cataract removal. It is important to note that while phacoemulsification is considered a safe and effective procedure, there are potential complications that need to be managed. Methods: This study included one hundred eyes of 93 nondiabetic patients undergoing noncomplicated cataract operation at the ophthalmology department at Sohag Teaching Hospital. A preoperative assessment of the best …

On October 25th 2025, 89 persons, including 78 residents from 11 communities, 11 representatives from 9 organizations, gathered in Placencia for a collaborative workshop aimed at sharing results on co- benefits and values from priority areas for Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) pertaining to mangroves and coral reefs, particularly mapping and valuing mangroves NbS, resident perceptions toward mangroves on private property, and coral reef NbS fisheries supply chains. We also gathered input from the community to identify management options for coral NbS based on criteria previously identified from workshops (such as coral health, tourism and recreational fisheries hotspots, and social-culturally important areas). …

Testing The Waters: Expanding Chapter 9 Bankruptcy To Encourage Treatment Of Chemically Contaminated Drinking Water, Alexandra Zimmer Jan 2025

Testing The Waters: Expanding Chapter 9 Bankruptcy To Encourage Treatment Of Chemically Contaminated Drinking Water, Alexandra Zimmer

Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal

Chemical contamination of drinking water supplies has become a significant issue across the globe with serious health and safety impacts. While the true extent of the impact is still being determined, costs associated with remediation efforts to clean up are astonishing. Municipalities, in particular cities, towns, and counties, suffer significant damages both through costs incurred directly for treatment of chemically contaminated drinking water supplies and through lost revenues resulting from municipal residents’ exposure.

This Comment argues Congress should expand municipal access to filing for bankruptcy under chapter 9 of the Bankruptcy Code to encourage local government efforts to clean up …

Healthcare Providers’ Lived Experiences During Pivotal Change, Lisa Raynelle Shelley Jan 2025

Healthcare Providers’ Lived Experiences During Pivotal Change, Lisa Raynelle Shelley

Dissertations

This phenomenological study examined healthcare providers’ lived experiences of psychological safety and administrative leader behaviors that influenced those experiences during pivotal change. While much research addressed psychological safety among frontline healthcare staff, a gap was noticed concerning providers. This study aimed to investigate the impact of psychological safety and administrative support on provider engagement, emotional response, and retention during periods of significant change. Data were collected via a survey containing multiple-choice and open-ended questions, followed by semi-structured interviews. Four findings emerged. First, the providers’ pivotal events generated themes of “workplace power dynamics,” “systemic and organizational change,” “transformational crisis,” and “physical …

A Qualitative Study On The Cultural Adaptation Process Of Adventist Volunteers In Central Asia, Cecilia Nanni Jan 2025

A Qualitative Study On The Cultural Adaptation Process Of Adventist Volunteers In Central Asia, Cecilia Nanni

Journal of Adventist Mission Studies

The cultural adaptation process for the volunteers who participated in this study follows, according to their own perceptions, a progressive sequence of five stages: Awe/Confusion, Denial, Observation, Integration, and Habituation. As shown, this process is not without difficulties and negative feelings such as confusion, discouragement, sadness, anger, and rejection, which are inherent to the processes of uprooting and cultural change. However, it is evident how experiences evolve as time passes, culminating in acceptance, learning, comfort, adjustment, and adaptation.

Under Political Pressure: How Courts And Congress Can Help Prosecutors Do Justice, Bruce A. Green, Rebecca Roiphe Jan 2025

Under Political Pressure: How Courts And Congress Can Help Prosecutors Do Justice, Bruce A. Green, Rebecca Roiphe

Faculty Scholarship

Some subordinate federal prosecutors faced a challenging professional dilemma in the early days of the second Trump Administration. It arose from the tension between their role as public officials and lawyers who owe fiduciary duties to the public and their role as Department of Justice (DOJ) employees who take direction from higher-ups. The DOJ leadership directed these subordinate prosecutors to use their considerable power in ways evidently designed to advance partisan political objectives. This was contrary to the clear understanding previously expressed by courts, the legal profession, and the DOJ itself that prosecutors have a duty to seek justice, which …

Super-Dicta, Courtney M. Cox Jan 2025

Super-Dicta, Courtney M. Cox

Faculty Scholarship

A weird thing happens when a conscientious, rational judge lacks certainty and has the humility to know it: she will often decide cases for reasons that differ from the reasons in her opinions. To illustrate, suppose she thinks it’s 50/50 whether Defendant’s copying infringed or was fair use. She could rationally flip a coin. But if she does, and she finds for Defendant, it will not be because of fair use. Rather, it will be because she thought it was 50/50 whether the copying was fair use—and the coin landed tails.

Coin-flip cases are rare, but uncertainty is not. There …

To Be Or Not To Be Controlled: The Making Of Thespians In Nineteenth-Century Asylums, Olivia Kurylo Jan 2025

To Be Or Not To Be Controlled: The Making Of Thespians In Nineteenth-Century Asylums, Olivia Kurylo

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Throughout the 1800s, superintendents of insane asylums incorporated the works of Shakespeare into their medical practices. Shakespearean plays became a conduit of power for the asylum superintendents, providing them with a literary model of sanity that they imposed on patients while simultaneously becoming a mode of communication for asylum patients to perform as ‘sane’ in accordance to the superintendents’ definitions. While the superintendents imposed a Shakespearean model of social normalcy onto the patients, the asylum patients used Shakespeare’s plays as a conduit for verbal expression. Essentially, asylums became Shakespearean plays as both the medical staff and the asylum patients employed …

An Insight Into Mediation Analysis, Nicholas Mccracken Jan 2025

An Insight Into Mediation Analysis, Nicholas Mccracken

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Mediation is an ideology often present in the social sciences. A mediator is meant to serve as the middle point between one party and another, taking the communications from one party and ensuring that the other party can comprehend that of the original party. Though this is very popular in social sciences, we can apply a statistical concept to it as well. We can explain the relationship between two parties and a mediator through a series of statistical equations, known as Baron and Kenny’s Equations. With these equations, we can determine how one variable is meant to impact another variable …

Predicting Heart Disease Using Machine Learning Models, Zeynep Cetin Jan 2025

Predicting Heart Disease Using Machine Learning Models, Zeynep Cetin

Dividing Paradise: A History Of Land In Hawai'i, Lacy Nicholas Jan 2025

Dividing Paradise: A History Of Land In Hawai'i, Lacy Nicholas

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This paper acts as a biography of Hawaiian land, using multidisciplinary sources to construct a timeline of how land has been conceptualized and used by the people who live there. It analyzes Hawai'i as a settler colony. I begin with the first Polynesian settlers in Hawai'i, focusing on the feudal-like division and redistribution of land by the king in the pre-colonial era. Then, I discuss the attitude of the American settlers in Hawai'i and how those ideas were manifested in the privatization of land and the age of sugarcane plantations. Next, I focus on how the United States military has …

How The Intersection Of Social Identities Shape Belonging At A Predominantly White Institution, Makayla Minard, Jennifer Stanley Jan 2025

How The Intersection Of Social Identities Shape Belonging At A Predominantly White Institution, Makayla Minard, Jennifer Stanley

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This study investigates the relationship between students’ perceptions of diversity, equity, and inclusion and belonging within higher education institutions with the aim of understanding how the intersection of multiple marginalized identities influences their experience. Recognizing that belonging is a fundamental human need and crucial for well-being and academic success within higher education institutions, the study acknowledges that students who identify with multiple historically oppressed groups are at greater risk of negative outcomes. These findings reveal statistically different perceptions of diversity, equity, and inclusion and belonging among undergraduate students, with those identifying with multiple marginalized groups reporting a less positive experience …

This will be measured through a series of five tests completed in the following order: the sit to stand test, hop and stop test, the single leg stance test, the digit symbol substitution test, and a tower of Hanoi task. These tests will be conducted on 20 dance majors, and 20 non-dance students. This data will …

Breaking A Criminal Mind: Leveraging Habit Breaking/Building For Crime Reduction, Dru Gerace Jan 2025

Breaking A Criminal Mind: Leveraging Habit Breaking/Building For Crime Reduction, Dru Gerace

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Criminal behavior is often shaped by a complex interaction between psychological processes, habitual actions, and neurobiological mechanisms. This research explores how habitual decision-making and reinforcement patterns contribute to criminal tendencies, integrating insights from neuroscience and psychology. The study examines how early-life experiences, cognitive biases, and environmental factors shape habitual behaviors that may predispose individuals to criminal activity. It also discusses the role of executive functioning, impulse control, and neuroplasticity in breaking maladaptive patterns. By analyzing contemporary theories of habit formation and their neurological underpinnings, this paper offers a multidimensional perspective on the development of criminal behavior. Furthermore, implications for rehabilitation …
