To Compare Is Human: A Review Of Social Comparison Theory In Organizational Settings, Michael J. Matthews, Thomas K. Kelemen
To Compare Is Human: A Review Of Social Comparison Theory In Organizational Settings, Michael J. Matthews, Thomas K. Kelemen
Management Faculty Publications
Social comparisons are one of the most ubiquitous behaviors that individuals, groups, and firms undertake. In particular, social comparison theory is based upon the premise that actors are motivated to engage in comparisons and that decisions throughout this process impact employees’ core self-evaluations, team relations, executives’ behaviors, firm prestige, and more. However, despite the prevalence of the phenomenon—and thereby the frequent application of the theory in organizational studies—a synopsis of the theory’s underpinnings and extant findings remains absent. Here, we present a state-of-the-art review that summarizes the theory’s history and mechanics and critically examines how social comparison theory has been …

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology
Background: The association between increased rates of pneumonia and influenza and longterm exposures of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) versus angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) remained unclear. Methods: This is a retrospective population-based cohort study using territory-wide healthcare data in Hong Kong. The study period was from 1st January 2000 and 31st August 2020. Patients who used ARB or ACEI were included. ARB and ACEI users were matched using a propensity score at 1:1 ratio with nearest neighbor search strategy. The follow-up started after one-year lag time after drug initiation until outcome, death or end of study. Risks of new onset …

First In The Field: Pioneering In Structural Heart Interventional Echocardiography, Alex Pui-Wai Lee
Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology
Structural heart disease (SHD) has emerged as one of the most dynamic frontiers in contemporary cardiology. Interventional echocardiography, once a niche discipline, is now central to the planning, execution, and follow-up of complex structural interventions. This comprehensive review traces the evolution of the field, anchored in both scientific literature and firsthand experience. We explore the journey from 2D to 3D imaging, the impact of mentorship and research at the Mayo Clinic, the rise of advanced interventional devices, the integration of artificial intelligence and robotics, and the importance of resilience and teamwork. Our aim is to inspire, inform, and chart a …

Aneurysmal Dilatation Following Common Femoral Artery Directional Atherectomy, Timothy H.H. Kam, Bryan P. Yan, Guangming Tan
Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology
Aneurysmal dilatation is an uncommon but serious complication of directional atherectomy for heavily calcified lower extremity arterial disease. In the absence of established treatment guidelines, this case report describes the successful endovascular management of a common femoral artery aneurysm following directional atherectomy using covered stents.
Iatrogenic Femoral Arteriovenous Fistula After Leadless Pacemaker Implantation Treated With Balloon-Expandable Stent: A Report Of Three Cases, Cheuk Yin Lai, Timothy Ho Him, Mark Tk Tam, Guang-Ming Tan, Bryan P Yan
Iatrogenic Femoral Arteriovenous Fistula After Leadless Pacemaker Implantation Treated With Balloon-Expandable Stent: A Report Of Three Cases, Cheuk Yin Lai, Timothy Ho Him, Mark Tk Tam, Guang-Ming Tan, Bryan P Yan
Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology
Endovascular covered stenting is a minimally invasive option for treating iatrogenic femoral access site complications, including arteriovenous femoral fistula (AVF). Reports on AVF repair mainly concern small bore devices, but large bore devices such as leadless pacemakers post unique challenges. We present 3 cases of iatrogenic femoral AVF after large-bore, 27Fr access sheath insertion for leadless pacemaker implantation. Both underwent endovascular balloon-expandable covered stenting, with resolution of AVF and durable long-term results. As patients referred for leadless pacemaker implantations are often frail with co-morbidities, endovascular stenting is an appealing alternative to open surgical repair for AVF.

Examining Collaborative Healthcare For Substance Use Disorder: A Case Study Of Brigham And Women's Hospital Bridge Clinic, Megan Bidgood
Psychology Honors Papers
Individuals with substance use disorders (SUD) are clinically underserved due to increased health and psychiatric comorbidities, structural barriers to treatment, stigma, and insufficient resources. This suggests that there is a need for an accessible and culturally competent treatment model. Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) Bridge Clinic is a multi-disciplinary, low threshold SUD treatment to promote collaborative healthcare and the transitioning of patients to longer-term care. The aim of the current study is to better understand personal accounts of patients and various clinical and non-clinical providers to optimize the BWH Bridge Clinic’s approach to treatment. Patients (N=5) and providers (N=6) participated …

Space Over Time: Housing For The Life Cycle, Lee Anne Fennell
Space Over Time: Housing For The Life Cycle, Lee Anne Fennell
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
People need housing throughout the life cycle, and what they need from that housing changes over time. Yet the menu of residential options is often too static, rigid, and limited to respond to these changes. What would it mean to configure housing to adapt to households’ evolving spatial requirements, risk tolerances, health challenges, and financial statuses? How could greater flexibility in the built environment enable communities to deliver better residential services to their populations? Elder housing offers a illuminating window into these questions and their answers. Addressing life-stage correlated housing mismatches could help to loosen the larger supply constraints—and failures …
The Constitution And The War On Dei, Sonja A. Starr, Genevieve Lakier
The Constitution And The War On Dei, Sonja A. Starr, Genevieve Lakier
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
his Article examines how the second Trump Administration’s aggressive attacks on programs, policies, and speech loosely associated with diversity, equity, and inclusion [DEI] intersect with the constitutional guarantees of equal protection and freedom of speech. We argue first that there is little doctrinal support for the administration’s pervasive efforts to justify its war on DEI by invoking the Equal Protection Clause and parallel statutory law. Instead, the administration is stretching existing colorblindness doctrine beyond recognition, into a radical vision that we label “anti-antisubordination.” On this view, vindicating equality values does not only require restricting practices that treat individuals differently based …
Family, Faith And Nation: The Roberts Court And The Global Pivot Against Legal Liberalism, Aziz Z. Huq, Tom Ginsburg
Family, Faith And Nation: The Roberts Court And The Global Pivot Against Legal Liberalism, Aziz Z. Huq, Tom Ginsburg
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
The Roberts Court has veered sharply in a culturally conservative direction. Traditional solidarities of faith, family, and nation have been elevated above the individual autonomy interests that motivated the justices in the twentieth century. The Supreme Court’s jurisprudence in this vein complements and is reinforced by changes in public law more generally—for example, in recent executive orders that amplify the same values. In legal scholarship, this jurisprudential shift is pervasively framed in terms of domestic electoral politics, in particular as a product of Republican dominance of the presidency and the Senate at key moments.
But expand the analytic lens outward, …
Agonistic Federalism, Aziz Z. Huq, Zachary D. Clopton
Agonistic Federalism, Aziz Z. Huq, Zachary D. Clopton
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
It’s been called the “oldest question” of American constitutional law: How does the national government deal with its sovereign subnational states? Judges and scholars have tried to capture this dynamic via theories of “dual federalism,” “process federalism,” “cooperative federalism,” or “federalism by integration.” But all these models suddenly seem to have superseded, and even perhaps rendered obsolete, by an unexpected step-change in the intensity of federal-state conflicts. In the place of longstanding federalism models, this article demonstrates, an underappreciated form of intergovernmental relations has emerged. We call this model “agonistic federalism.” The article’s aim is to introduce and theorize this …
Bypassing Agency Adjudication, Brian Lipshutz
Bypassing Agency Adjudication, Brian Lipshutz
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
This Article examines the contested practice of bypassing agency adjudication to accelerate judicial review of non-final executive action. Parties typically challenge final action under the Administrative Procedure Act (APA). But parties may also seek an injunction or declaratory judgment with respect to a non-final action that violates a statute or the Constitution. Traditionally, such “ultra vires” review required a clearly unlawful action and an inadequate administrative remedy. But modern courts further limit it by applying three judicially developed timing doctrines—exhaustion, ripeness, and Thunder Basin.
This Article explains why the traditional ultra vires model— without the timing doctrines—should govern the bypassing …

Size Structure Of Black Crappie And Bluegill In Northern, Eastern, Western, And Southern Minnesota, Ray Anderson
Size Structure Of Black Crappie And Bluegill In Northern, Eastern, Western, And Southern Minnesota, Ray Anderson
Journal of Earth and Life Science
Fish size structure is an important factor in a fishery population. Panfish such as black crappie Pomoxis nigromaculatus and bluegill Lepomis macrochirus play a major role in the health of fisheries. Five lakes from southern, northern, eastern, and western Minnesota were selected for analysis. Data were collected using standard sampling methods, including gill nets, electrofishing, and fyke nets. Length-frequency distributions were created to assess size structure in each region. Relative abundance was measured using catch per unit effort. Data analysis included a one-way ANOVA to compare Proportional Size Distribution (PSD) values and the distribution of fish sizes among regions. Chi-square …
Comparison Of Hoop Nets To Trap Nets In Sampling Panfish, Jayden R, Alsleben
Comparison Of Hoop Nets To Trap Nets In Sampling Panfish, Jayden R, Alsleben
Journal of Earth and Life Science
Panfish including bluegill Lepomis macrochirus and black crappie Pomoxis nigromaculatus are gamefish species of significance found in Minnesota. Hoop nets and trap nets are two types of gear that can be used to sample these fish. Fisheries managers and anglers alike are interested in the best tactics to capture panfish. The behavior of fish, including bluegill and black crappie, change throughout the sampling season and make it difficult to assume accurate representations. Trap nets have historically been adequate in sampling near shore populations, but questions surrounding the gear have allowed other options to be pursued. The objective of this study …
The Relationship Between Plant Density And Microplastic Concentration In The Water In Lake Bemidji, Mn, Arian Garcia
The Relationship Between Plant Density And Microplastic Concentration In The Water In Lake Bemidji, Mn, Arian Garcia
Journal of Earth and Life Science
Microplastics, plastic particles smaller than 5 mm, are an increasing environmental threat, particularly due to their widespread distribution and toxicity. While much research has focused on larger freshwater and marine ecosystems, the presence and impacts of microplastics in smaller inland lakes remain less understood. This study investigates the relationship between plant density and microplastic concentrations in Lake Bemidji, a smaller freshwater lake. A total of 30 water samples were collected across varying vegetation conditions, ranging from open water (0%) to 90% plant coverage. Microplastics were identified and categorized into six morphological types: fibers, fragments, films, spheres/beads, and foam. The samples …
A Sample Of Fish Communities In Beaver Ponds Of Northern Minnesota, Reed Cumberland, Rose Kuhlmann
A Sample Of Fish Communities In Beaver Ponds Of Northern Minnesota, Reed Cumberland, Rose Kuhlmann
Journal of Earth and Life Science
The North American beaver Castor canadensis is an ecosystem engineer and a keystone species to the environment. Beaver inhabit ponds and construct dams to build ponds that provide habitat for certain fish. Little information is provided on the species of fish that live in beaver ponds. The objective of this study is to sample the fish communities in beaver ponds while comparing the effectiveness of two styles of minnow traps. Twelve beaver ponds were selected in the Bemidji area to be sampled. The quantity and species caught in each style of trap were recorded to compare effectiveness of each trap …
Effects Of Round-Up On The Environment, Sandra J. Marcu
Effects Of Round-Up On The Environment, Sandra J. Marcu
Journal of Earth and Life Science
Many people around the world have used and still currently use Roundup but are unaware of the effects it has on the environment. Roundup is a spray on application weedkiller that is widely used around the world today both residentially and commercially. It enables its user to grow a garden or a field of crops with a no-tilling approach to eliminate weeds. It is a well-known and popular choice for killing weeds that has been around since the mid 1970’s (Oca, 2017). John Franz, a Monsanto scientist discovered that glyphosate (main ingredient in Roundup) was an herbicide or weedkiller, and …
The Effectiveness Of The Minnesota Buffer Law And Its Impacts On People, Ellen P. Isakson
The Effectiveness Of The Minnesota Buffer Law And Its Impacts On People, Ellen P. Isakson
Journal of Earth and Life Science
In January 2015, the then-governor of Minnesota Mark Dayton announced new legislation that would require 50-foot vegetation buffers along all waterways in Minnesota; this legislation would come to be known as the Minnesota buffer law, exact requirements being “perennial vegetative buffers of up to 50 feet along lakes, rivers, and streams and buffers of 16.5 feet along ditches” (Albert, 2017; MN Board of Water and Soil Resources [MN BWSR] 4 ). A buffer in the context of vegetation and natural resource management is a strip of vegetation around a body of water “designed to intercept stormwater runoff and minimize soil …

A Brief History Of Opioid-Use Disorder In The United States, Effect On Orthopaedics, And Current Management Options, William Curtis, Nicholas Newcomb, Eric S. Kruger, Christopher L. Shultz
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Declared a public health emergency in 2017 and leading to 11 million years of life lost worldwide, the American opioid crisis has impacted millions of people, with up to 7 million experiencing opioid use disorder. In orthopaedic surgery, opioid analgesia has been associated with various complications, including infections, deep vein thrombosis, prolonged hospital stays, and overall inferior outcomes after surgical procedures. Orthopaedic surgeons commonly rely on opioids to provide postoperative analgesia and may frequently encounter patients with opioid use disorder. It is therefore essential that orthopaedic surgeons understand opioid use disorder, its effect on orthopaedic outcomes, and management of opioid …
Scar Tissue Adhesions, Neuromuscular Guarding, And Functional Recovery: A Case Report Of Physical Therapy Post-Cholecystectomy, Raeisa Griñe, Adam Walsh
Scar Tissue Adhesions, Neuromuscular Guarding, And Functional Recovery: A Case Report Of Physical Therapy Post-Cholecystectomy, Raeisa Griñe, Adam Walsh
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Scar tissue from abdominal surgeries, such as cholecystectomy, can lead to long-term issues such as restricted movement, painful spasms, and impaired function. Laparoscopic adhesiolysis is a common surgical treatment for pathological scar tissue impairments. Conservative care, such as physical therapy, is a commonly used approach for managing pathological scar tissue. In this case, manual therapy techniques and targeted exercises successfully reduced the intensity and frequency of abdominal spasms, improved core strength and endurance, and enhanced overall functional mobility. These improvements were reflected in enhanced scores on the Lower Extremity Functional Scale and the Vancouver Scar Scale in a 59-year-old woman …
