Empowering Birth: Comparing Nurse-Led Holistic And Pharmacologic Pain Relief Approaches, Jessica C. Moore Jan 2025

Empowering Birth: Comparing Nurse-Led Holistic And Pharmacologic Pain Relief Approaches, Jessica C. Moore

Nursing | Student Research Posters

Childbirth is often described as one of the most meaningful experiences in a woman’s life. During this time, effective pain management is essential not only for reducing discomfort, but also for improving maternal satisfaction and minimizing unnecessary obstetric interventions. While childbirth is frequently approached as a purely physical process, it is inherently holistic, influenced by cultural, social, psychological, and emotional factors.

Growing evidence highlights the value of incorporating and educating patients and providers on non-pharmacologic strategies such as breathing techniques, massage, aromatherapy, hydrotherapy, positioning ,ambulation, and continuous emotional support.

For example, a study in Sweden that found that a group …

Developing A Nursing Early-Intervention Bundle To Decrease The Prevalence Of Post-Intensive Care Syndrome, Aneesha Biju Jan 2025

Developing A Nursing Early-Intervention Bundle To Decrease The Prevalence Of Post-Intensive Care Syndrome, Aneesha Biju

Nursing | Student Research Posters

Post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) has become an increasingly recognized challenge in critical care as more patients survive prolonged mechanical ventilation and lengthy ICU stays. Although lifesaving interventions support recovery from the primary illness, many patients develop new or worsened physical, cognitive, or psychological impairments after discharge. These complications often limit independence, slow recovery, and create long-term burdens for both patients and families. Research shows that early, consistent nursing interventions, such as delirium prevention, early mobility, mental health support, and family communication, can reduce the risk of PICS. The absence of a unified and standardized approach results in inconsistent practices and …

The Effects Of Strong Social And Parental Support Compared To Low Or Absent Support In Lgbtqia+ Youth Mental Health, Kassandra Bautista Jan 2025

The Effects Of Strong Social And Parental Support Compared To Low Or Absent Support In Lgbtqia+ Youth Mental Health, Kassandra Bautista

Nursing | Student Research Posters

Throughout history, sexual and gender minorities have faced a range of emotional and psychological challenges shaped by their unique experiences and interactions with society, family, and peers. According to the American Psychiatric Association (APA), homosexuality was classified as a sociopathic personality disturbance in the first edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-I) in 1952, and it remained listed as a mental disorder until it was removed in 1973. Individuals that identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or other identities within the LGBTQIA+ community were historically seen as abnormal and were often subjected to ethically problematic …

Comparing Human Milk-Derived Vs Bovine-Derived Fortifiers In Formula-Fed Preterm Infants On The Incidence Of Necrotizing Enterocolitis, Maya C. Kern Jan 2025

Comparing Human Milk-Derived Vs Bovine-Derived Fortifiers In Formula-Fed Preterm Infants On The Incidence Of Necrotizing Enterocolitis, Maya C. Kern

Nursing | Student Research Posters

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is one of the leading causes of death in infants < 32 weeks gestation and/or < 1500g. Human breast milk lowers NEC rates through immunologic, microbial, and gut-protective mechanisms. When maternal or donor milk is unavailable, infants require formula with fortification but the safest type of fortifiers remains unclear. Bovine-derived fortifiers may increase gut inflammation; human milk-derived fortifiers may offer more protection. Limited research exists comparing these fortifiers when infants are exclusively formula fed. Determining if human milk-derived fortifiers still reduce NEC risk could influence NICU feeding guidelines and improve outcomes.

Effectiveness Of Post-Discharge Interventions Following Psychiatric Hospitalization On Readmissions And Suicide Prevention Among Adolescents, Maria Paz Eladia Posadas

Nursing | Student Research Posters

Background: Suicide is a pervasive and far-reaching issue. Psychiatric hospitalization is often used as an intervention for individuals, including adolescents, experiencing suicidal ideation and/or behavior. However, post-discharge care may lack structure or clearly defined follow-up services, which can result in rehospitalizations and increased suicidality. Objective: The goal of the proposed research study is to investigate how implementation of peer support groups for adolescents following psychiatric hospitalization can assist in reducing readmissions and mitigating suicide risk. This can also help shape strategies for managing care after discharge. Method: The proposed research study utilizes a quantitative quasi-experimental design to determine the efficacy …

Background

Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is a relatively uncommon but high mortality form of stroke that can result in long-lasting disability. A better understanding of key neuroinflammatory changes during the early phase (< 72 h) may provide potential avenues of treatment.

Methods

In an attempt to understand these early changes, we recruited 7 aSAH patients for profiling of longitudinal plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteins at up to 72 h post injury. We additionally compared this to control plasma obtained previously from healthy elderly volunteers. Using the Alamar Biosciences NULISAseq platform, we obtained a comprehensive picture of early peripheral and central inflammatory changes after injury.

Results

Mutations in the human granulin (GRN) gene are associated with multiple diseases, including dementia disorders such as frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy (LATE). We studied a Grn knockout (Grn-KO) mouse model in order to evaluate a potential therapeutic strategy for these diseases using nicorandil, a commercially available agonist for the ABCC9/Abcc9-encoded regulatory subunit of the “K+ATP” channel that is well-tolerated in humans. Aged (13 months) Grn-KO and wild-type (WT) mice were treated as controls or with nicorandil (15 mg/kg/day) in drinking water for 7 months, then tested for neurobehavioral …

Gollihue, Colin B. Rogers, Susan D. Kraner, Edmund B. Rucker, Yuriko Katsumata, Yang Jiang, Peter T. Nelson, Donna M. Wilcock, Pradoldej Sompol, Olivier Thibault, Christopher M. Norris

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

While cerebrovascular dysfunction and reactive astrocytosis are extensively characterized hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias, the dynamic relationship between reactive astrocytes and cerebral vessels remains poorly understood. Here, we used jGCaMP8f and two-photon microscopy to investigate calcium signaling in multiple astrocyte subcompartments, concurrent with changes in cerebral arteriole activity, in fully awake 7- to 8-month-old male and female 5xFAD mice, a model for AD-like pathology, and wild-type (WT) littermates. In the absence of movement, spontaneous calcium transients in barrel cortex occurred more frequently in astrocyte somata, processes, and perivascular regions of 5xFAD mice. However, evoked arteriole dilations (in …

Gilead: Municipal Liability For Punitive Damages Under The Fair Housing Act, Robert G. Schwemm Jan 2025

Gilead: Municipal Liability For Punitive Damages Under The Fair Housing Act, Robert G. Schwemm

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

The 1968 Fair Housing Act (“FHA”) has always been understood to apply to local governments, which have proved to be among the most frequent and significant violators of this law, especially in their opposition to housing of particular value to racial minorities and persons with disabilities. Yet not until the Second Circuit’s decision last year in Gilead Community Services, Inc. v. Town of Cromwell did an appellate court approve an FHA-based punitive-damage award against a municipality. Before Gilead, district courts had generally blocked such awards, applying § 1983’s immunities to protect local governments and their officials from the FHA’s …

Confronting The Duty To Capitalize In Veil-Piercing, Douglas C. Michael Jan 2025

Confronting The Duty To Capitalize In Veil-Piercing, Douglas C. Michael

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

In corporate law, the doctrine of “piercing the corporate veil” allows courts to hold shareholders personally liable for corporate obligations. The doctrine—which now also applies to entities other than corporations—has been widely criticized as imprecise and unworkable. I respond to that criticism in the area of veil-piercing law which remains most intractable—the case of the tort victim who remains unsatisfied after exhausting corporate assets. Although most commentators have eschewed talk of any duty owed by the business owner to vest the business with sufficient assets, I argue that courts and legislatures should recognize—confront—such a duty. I look to negligence law …

Deceptive Exploitation: Deepfakes, The Rights Of Publicity And Privacy, And Trademark Law, Michael D. Murray Jan 2025

Deceptive Exploitation: Deepfakes, The Rights Of Publicity And Privacy, And Trademark Law, Michael D. Murray

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

This article addresses the application of right of publicity, right of privacy, and trademark law to the problem of deepfakes. It will explore the routine and not so routine ways that personality and persona attributes are exploited in traditional privacy contexts and publicity contexts. It will also examine the use of First Amendment defenses in legal actions traditionally associated with the exploitation of celebrities, sports figures, and other persons under state law theories of name-image-likeness exploitation, as well as and federal trademark law theories of false endorsement and false designation of origin.

Part I provides an introduction and background to …

History, Tradition, And Voter Registration, Joshua A. Douglas Jan 2025

History, Tradition, And Voter Registration, Joshua A. Douglas

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

History and tradition are dominating the Supreme Court, which has invoked history and tradition to curtail some rights, such as abortion, while using it to elevate other rights, such as the right to bear arms. Might history and tradition also cause the Court to strike down new restrictions on the right to vote, even if doing so would cut against the current Court’s narrow protection of voting rights? Disputes over voter registration restrictions will pose that very question. Many states have recently implemented onerous rules on voter registration, especially targeting third-party voter registration organizations. Congress is also debating the SAVE …

Gender Disparity In Social Security, Kathryn L. Moore Jan 2025

Gender Disparity In Social Security, Kathryn L. Moore

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Facially neutral, the U.S. Social Security system structurally discriminates against women because it prefers those who successfully fulfill the traditional male breadwinner role rather than the traditional female caregiving role. Overall, women receive lower worker benefits, are much more likely to claim spouse and surviving spouse benefits, and are more dependent on Social Security for their retirement benefits than are men.

This Article assesses Social Security’s disparate treatment of women and how Social Security might be reformed to enhance benefits for women. It begins by providing a broad overview of Social Security benefits. It then discusses how women and couples …

The Migration Of Abolition Theory, Matthew Boaz Jan 2025

The Migration Of Abolition Theory, Matthew Boaz

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

This Article considers whether and how theories of abolition developed by criminal law scholars are transferrable to the realm of immigration enforcement. A key question is how abolitionist principles might be employed in support of critiques of the United States’ immigration regulatory regime in the same way that these principles have been deployed in denouncing racialized policing and an injurious, industrialized prison system.

This Article makes two contributions: First, it identifies and illuminates a methodology adopted by critical and decarceral criminal law scholars: (i) denouncing the harms of a structural system, (ii) identifying the normative justification(s) for this system, and …

The Black Panther Party: From Militancy To Social Activism, De'andre Brown Jr. Jan 2025

The Black Panther Party: From Militancy To Social Activism, De'andre Brown Jr.

History and Political Science | Senior Theses

This research project examines the ways in which the Black Panther Party (BPP) was negatively portrayed by the media and targeted by the government from the moment of the organization's inception in 1966. The BPP’s shift in rhetoric style from militancy to social activism is emphasized by examining the organization’s “survival” programs, such as the Free Breakfast Programs, Free Health Clinics, and Education Programs, and their impact on black communities around the country. Past scholarly opinions about the BPP were driven by a fear from white America toward the organization’s aggressive style of protest and social activism. The government looked …

Nipping It In The Bud: The Promise And Perils Of Tort Litigation In Addressing The Health Harms Of High-Thc Products, Rebekah Ninan Jan 2025

Nipping It In The Bud: The Promise And Perils Of Tort Litigation In Addressing The Health Harms Of High-Thc Products, Rebekah Ninan

Minnesota Law Review Headnotes, Vols. 107 onward (2022-present)

In the last decade use of marijuana has skyrocketed. With the legalization of marijuana in states across the country, a nascent but increasingly powerful cannabis industry has formed. This industry has not only introduced cannabis products into the mainstream, but it has created high-THC products more powerful than anything found in nature or previous black markets. These products, including oils, vapes, and edibles, may have health effects that are unlike any risks that researchers have previously identified with cannabis. Science has started to sound the alarm, but the issue has remained unaddressed in the law. Only two states have introduced …

Crisis In The Current: A Proposed Study On The Impact Of Columbia River Basin Water Quality On Juvenile Chinook Salmon Survival, Olivia Buist-Thuillier Jan 2025

Crisis In The Current: A Proposed Study On The Impact Of Columbia River Basin Water Quality On Juvenile Chinook Salmon Survival, Olivia Buist-Thuillier

Pitzer Senior Theses

Salmon occupy a vital role in the ecosystem, economy, and indigenous culture of the Pacific Northwest of the United States, specifically within the Columbia River Basin. Of the five species of Pacific Salmon that live in the basin, Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) are the most widely commercially fished and are the largest. In recent years, Chinook Salmon populations have heavily declined from human influence. Rising temperatures from anthropogenic climate change, habitat destruction (dams, human presence), runoff from agricultural practices, and overfishing have all contributed to this decline. Because of their role as a keystone species and their cultural significance, there …

Space For The Departed: Burial, Land Scarcity, And Bone-Ash Apartments In China, Xinyi Wu Jan 2025

Space For The Departed: Burial, Land Scarcity, And Bone-Ash Apartments In China, Xinyi Wu

Pitzer Senior Theses

The rise of bone ash apartments in China reflects a layered response to urban land scarcity, shifting funeral policies, and real estate speculation. As the state mandates cremation and restricts private cemetery development, traditional burial customs are increasingly reshaped by spatial limitations, economic pressures, and political regulation.

For some families, bone ash apartments function as modern ancestral halls—domestic spaces for remembrance and ritual continuity. For others, they represent a pragmatic investment strategy, offering long-term storage of ashes within assets that retain market value.

This thesis examines how urban planning, state funeral policy, real estate dynamics, and the disintegration of neighborhood …

Beyond The Bin: Transforming Relationships With Waste Through A Collaborative Inquiry-Based Environmental Education Curriculum, Kaylee V. Morris Jan 2025

Beyond The Bin: Transforming Relationships With Waste Through A Collaborative Inquiry-Based Environmental Education Curriculum, Kaylee V. Morris

Pitzer Senior Theses

This thesis presents Beyond the Bin, a collaborative inquiry-based environmental education curriculum designed to transform how young learners understand and interact with waste. Motivated by the limitations of current downstream waste education—focused primarily on consumer behavior and individual disposal practices—this project argues for an upstream approach that identifies the underlying cause of these prevalent systems of disposability. Grounded in environmental education theory, affective learning, and ecological literacy, the curriculum encourages students to rethink waste as a material with creative potential rather than something to discard. Through creative engagement, experiential learning, and community-based initiatives, the curriculum fosters collaboration between students, teachers, …
