Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Simplified Education On Respiratory Infections For South Asian Immigrants Parents Of Children 3 Months To 18 Years Of Age., Iman Khanam

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

BACKGROUND: Health literacy has been shown to be a major contributing factor to an individual’s ability to manage symptoms and therefore their health outcomes as well. Data demonstrates that those of South Asian descent tend to lack the health literacy necessary to manage health. Respiratory infections are one of the most common childhood illnesses. It is important that parents understand how to appropriately manage their child’s symptoms.

METHODS: A pre-intervention questionnaire was obtained from participating parents prior to the intervention. The post-intervention questionnaire was obtained at least one week after the intervention. A paired t-test analysis was conducted based on …

Patient Autonomy And Treatment Adherence In Esrd:A Study Of Provider & Nurse Perspectives On Barriers And Choices, Christina A. Larkin Jan 2025

Patient Autonomy And Treatment Adherence In Esrd:A Study Of Provider & Nurse Perspectives On Barriers And Choices, Christina A. Larkin

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Missed dialysis treatments are commonly attributed to barriers such as transportation, mental health challenges, and limited health literacy. However, emerging evidence highlights the complexity of adherence behaviors, including psychological, relational, and ethical dimensions that remain underexplored—particularly from the perspective of dialysis providers and nurses. This qualitative descriptive study examined how nephrology providers and dialysis nurses perceive barriers to adherence, with a focus on patient autonomy, motivation, and decisionmaking.

Using Self-Determination Theory (SDT) as a guiding framework, an anonymous, open- ended survey was distributed to 17 clinicians via the Qualtrics platform. Responses were analyzed using deductive content analysis, categorizing findings into …

Cognitive Decline And The U.S. Presidency: The Case Of Joe Biden, Mark Fisher, Sandy Sanbar Jan 2025

Cognitive Decline And The U.S. Presidency: The Case Of Joe Biden, Mark Fisher, Sandy Sanbar

Health Matrix: The Journal of Law-Medicine

This article examines the intersection of cognitive health, medical ethics, and constitutional governance through the lens of President Joe Biden’s medical history and recent cognitive performance. Highlighting the absence of formal neurocognitive testing protocols for presidential candidates and sitting Presidents, it raises critical questions about transparency, accountability, and the statutory and ethical obligations of medical professionals serving in political contexts. The paper discusses Biden’s stroke history, neurosurgical interventions, and subsequent lack of documented cognitive assessments, emphasizing the implications for public trust and the constitutional duty to ensure an executive fit for office. It advocates for the implementation of standardized, objective …

Readiness To The Privatization Of The Health System In Saudi Arabia: Translation And Factor Analysis Of Readiness To Organizational Change (Roc) Scale, Ahmed Ali Alasiri, Qi Zhang Jan 2025

Readiness To The Privatization Of The Health System In Saudi Arabia: Translation And Factor Analysis Of Readiness To Organizational Change (Roc) Scale, Ahmed Ali Alasiri, Qi Zhang

Epidemiology, Biostatistics, & Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Background

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) began a major transformation as a part of version 2030 for its health system. These reform initiatives aim to privatize health services and improve efficiency. Despite this meaningful change, there is a knowledge gap in how healthcare providers prepare for or perceive this shift. Specifically, there has been a lack of validation of Arabic instruments that gauge the individual readiness to this change. This study bridges the gap by localizing and validating the Readiness to Organizational Change scale (ROC) to provide empirical evidence and to understand adaptability for the KSA context.

Coffee Shops And Community, Julia A. Franz Jan 2025

Coffee Shops And Community, Julia A. Franz

Emerging Writers

This paper focuses on the role of coffeehouses as community hubs through a comparative analysis of two locations of a locally owned coffee company in Georgia. It examines how the physical design and values of each shop offer unique forms of social interaction. The St. Simons location encourages spontaneous, intergenerational conversations; while, the Brunswick shop strengthens pre-existing community ties among working families and retirees. The profile explains how, by incorporating local history, sustainable sourcing, and communal spaces, the coffee company shows how design and principles shape social dynamics. This profile highlights how coffeehouses can serve as more than commercial spaces …

Bioremediation In The Chesapeake Bay: Anthropogenic Ocean Acidification Mitigation In An Interactive Multi-Trophic Ecosystem, Cree Taylor Jan 2025

Bioremediation In The Chesapeake Bay: Anthropogenic Ocean Acidification Mitigation In An Interactive Multi-Trophic Ecosystem, Cree Taylor

AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship

Zostera marina is a species of marine macrophyte that has been largely prioritized in past submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) restoration initiatives within the Chesapeake Bay because of its 1) previous abundance, 2) demonstrated carbon burial abilities, and 3) observed ability for meadows of Z. marina to ameliorate low pH conditions. Due to the temperature variability and poor water quality in the Chesapeake Bay, Z. Marina beds have experienced several die-off events with limited capacity for regrowth. Ruppia maritima, an opportunistic species with tolerance to temperature shifts within the bay, may have the potential to maintain SAV coverage in areas …

Evaluating Saliva Based Glucose Testing For Accessible Diabetes Care In Tanzania, Shannon Dhindsa Jan 2025

Evaluating Saliva Based Glucose Testing For Accessible Diabetes Care In Tanzania, Shannon Dhindsa

Public Health Theses

Background: In Tanzania, limited healthcare infrastructure and reliance on invasive diagnostic methods significantly hinder effective diabetes screening and management. Individuals with diabetes often go undetected and have lower immune systems that make them prone to further infectious complications. Thus, properly managing this chronic condition can prevent additional infectious diseases. Salivary glucose testing offers a non-invasive, innovative alternative with the potential to transform the early detection and management of diabetes, especially in resource-constrained settings.

Design: This cross-sectional study, conducted at Muhimbili National Hospital's Diabetes Clinic in Dar es Salaam, evaluates the feasibility of salivary glucose testing using a colorimetric glucose-oxidase-peroxidase point-of-care …

Impact Of Maternal Chronic Diseases In Pregnancy On Duration Of Infant Intake Of Breastmilk In The Postpartum Period, Danielle Nicole Lodge Jan 2025

Impact Of Maternal Chronic Diseases In Pregnancy On Duration Of Infant Intake Of Breastmilk In The Postpartum Period, Danielle Nicole Lodge

Public Health Theses

Background: Chronic disease in pregnancy, including hypertensive disease, diabetes, and mental health disorders, is associated with adverse mother and infant health outcomes. Breastfeeding offers well-documented benefits, but currently, little evidence exists on how maternal chronic disease impacts the duration of breastfeeding postpartum, especially multiple chronic disease diagnoses. Objectives: To examine associations between maternal chronic disease and (1) duration of any breastmilk feeding through six months postpartum, (2) in-hospital infant feeding patterns, and (3) the impact of in-hospital breastmilk exposure on postpartum duration of breastmilk feeding among women with a chronic disease. Methods: This retrospective cohort study analyzed 1,294 maternal-infant records …

Glp-1 Receptor Agonist Use And Patient-Reported Well-Being Among Individuals With Diabetes And Obesity: Evidence From The All Of Us Research Program, Tinsae Gashachew Admassu

Public Health Theses

Abstract Background: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) are widely prescribed for type 2 diabetes and obesity, with growing interest in their potential effects on mental health and functional outcomes. However, clinical trials often exclude individuals with psychiatric comorbidities, limiting generalizability. Objective: To examine the association between GLP-1 RA use and self-reported mental health and functional outcomes in individuals with diabetes and obesity using real-world data from the All of Us Research Program. Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed 53,127 adults with type 2 diabetes and 35,430 adults with obesity who had both EHR and survey data. GLP-1 RA users were …

Subsidized And Forgotten: The Quiet Erosion Of The Supplemental Security Income Program In American Social Policy, Johntrell Bowles Jan 2025

Subsidized And Forgotten: The Quiet Erosion Of The Supplemental Security Income Program In American Social Policy, Johntrell Bowles

Public Health Theses

The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program was created to guarantee a basic level of income security for the nation's most economically vulnerable populations: low-income elderly adults, people who are blind, and individuals with disabilities. Despite this foundational mission, SSI has stagnated over the past fifty years, becoming increasingly inadequate in addressing the economic and social realities of those it was designed to support.

This thesis examines how congressional neglect, enduring stigma toward welfare recipients, and outdated policy structures have eroded SSI’s ability to fulfill its original promise. Grounded in a critical social policy framework and informed by the author's professional …

The Sword And The Serpent, Gina Dittmeier Jan 2025

The Sword And The Serpent, Gina Dittmeier

Children's Book Writing and Illustrating (MFA) Theses

This project provides insight into the monstrous bridegroom trope in fairytale and its influence in modern fantasy literature. The monstrous bridegroom trope has several different variations, but all of these variations result in a young and innocent woman marrying a monster. Through my critical essay, I look at this trope through a modern feminist lens, exploring the different variations of the trope in fairy tales, modern fairy tale adaptations, and fantasy literature. The essay brings in modern ideas of toxic masculinity and toxic femininity and applies them to the fairy tale inspiration of fantasy literature. The monstrous bridegroom trope and …

“Born This Way”: An Asexual Perspective On Biological Determinism, Julia Resciniti Jan 2025

“Born This Way”: An Asexual Perspective On Biological Determinism, Julia Resciniti

Student Work

The inclusion of Asexual under the queer umbrella is contentious in of itself. As an asexual (or “ace”) myself, I do not intend to litigate whether asexual people belong under the queer umbrella. Instead, I am more interested in examining asexuality in parallel with the larger queer community. In the fight for social acceptance, the queer community has told several narratives about why and how people are queer. The queer community has embraced “born this way” to say queerness is biologically innate. Recently, there has been some backlash as people view their queer identity as more social than biological. This …

The Importance Of Inclusive Playgrounds At Schools And In Communities, Hailee Cipollina Jan 2025

The Importance Of Inclusive Playgrounds At Schools And In Communities, Hailee Cipollina

International Professional Development Partnerships (IPDP) Consortium

Most, if not all schools have students with disabilities and the school provides these students with accommodation, modifications and services that they need. The one thing most of these schools do not have is appropriate equipment on playgrounds for their students with disabilities. Playgrounds at schools often are on ledges, have rough surfaces like woodchips and play equipment that is not safe or suitable for students with disabilities. This can be specifically difficult for students with physical disabilities who can’t access equipment like slides or swings on a noninclusive playground. This research will dive into how inclusive playgrounds at schools …

An Argument For A Right To Education For Undocumented Youth In Light Of Daca’S Uncertain Future, Minnie Blackman Jan 2025

An Argument For A Right To Education For Undocumented Youth In Light Of Daca’S Uncertain Future, Minnie Blackman

Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality

Undocumented youth are facing increasingly difficult circumstances in which to integrate into U.S. society both socially and economically. A primary reason for this phenomenon is the current antagonistic sentiments surrounding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. These sentiments have created a lack of trust in this program, with fewer undocumented youth applying for DACA status, which would allow many of them to apply to public colleges and universities at in-state tuition rates. Previous research has implied that state laws have the potential to create a property interest in education, and, as such, it must be protected from arbitrary …

Adopted Into Debt?, Grace Palcic Jan 2025

Adopted Into Debt?, Grace Palcic

Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality

While adoption procedures differ from state to state, every state uses some variation of the best interest of the child standard to determine the outcome of an adoption proceeding. To gather information for the best interest determination, states have created the home study process to investigate prospective adoptive families. A home study allows social workers and/or private adoption agencies to look at the needs of the child, the ability of the parents to care for the child, the existing familial dynamics, the safety of the physical home, the perceived moral character and reputation of the parents, mental and physical health …
