A Large Electroencephalogram Database Of Freewill Reaching And Grasping Tasks For Brain Machine Interfaces, Bhoj Raj Thapa, John Boggess, Jihye Bae
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Brain machine interfaces (BMIs) offer great potential to improve the quality of life for individuals with neurological disorders or severe motor impairments. Among various neural recording modalities, electroencephalogram (EEG) is particularly favorable for BMIs due to its noninvasive nature, portability, and high temporal resolution. Existing EEG datasets for BMIs are often limited to experimental settings that fail to address subjects’ freewill in decision making. We present a large EEG dataset, containing a total of 6808 trials, recorded from 23 healthy young adults (eight females and 15 males with an age range from 18 to 24 years) while performing reaching and …

Health Sciences
Background: Treatment of spontaneous pneumothorax involves conservative treatment or surgery. Our goal was to evaluate the need for surgical approach using Video- Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) for patients presenting spontaneous pneumothorax. Methods: Patients aged between 14 and 20 years old treated for spontaneous pneumothorax were included into an observational retrospective study. Patients were divided into two groups: Those with a success of conservative treatment at the initial presentation (Group A), and those where VATS was performed at initial presentation after failure of conservative treatment (Group B). Results: 134 patients were included with a median of 6.5 years follow-up. 102 (76,1%) …

Effective Management Of Disused Sealed Radioactive Sources In Uganda, Susan Nalumansi
Effective Management Of Disused Sealed Radioactive Sources In Uganda, Susan Nalumansi
International Journal of Nuclear Security
Sealed radioactive sources are used in a wide range of applications in Uganda, such as medicine, agriculture, geology, industry, and other fields. After a given useful period, the sealed sources can no longer perform their intended purpose and are thus regarded as disused. However, depending on the activity of the source, the disused sources are highly active and can cause significant damage to human health and the environment when mismanaged. A regulatory body was established with the mandate to regulate peaceful applications of ionizing radiation in Uganda. Given the vulnerability of sealed sources at the end of their life cycle …

Addressing The Rural Firearm Suicide Crisis: The Impact Of Culture, Mental Health, And Approaching Change, Sasha Ghofrani, Erik E. Langenau
PCOM Capstone Projects
Background. Firearm suicide rates are a growing public health concern, disproportionately impacting rural U.S. communities. This literature review explores risk factors contributing to this crisis.
Methods. This narrative literature review synthesizes research on the primary risk factors for firearm suicide in rural U.S. communities.
Key Findings. Key findings identify four central challenges: (1) a deeply rooted firearm culture based on identity and heritage in rural communities, which often resists traditional safety messaging; (2) prevalent unsafe firearm storage practices that increase the risk of firearm suicide; (3) high rates of social isolation, which are linked to both unsafe …
An Ecofeminist Approach To Climate Risks, Angela Hefti
An Ecofeminist Approach To Climate Risks, Angela Hefti
Michigan Journal of International Law
Climate change poses significant risks to the human right to life. However, international adjudicators have either neglected to examine right to life claims in the context of climate risks or dismissed them as prospective and speculative. International human rights bodies have long applied the standard of imminence to determine whether a threat to the right to life exists and the extent to which it constitutes a violation. In climate change cases, this standard has hardened, requiring a tight temporal connection between climate risks and a violation of the right to life. This article argues that failing to recognize the impact …

Transparency, Accountability, And Influence In The International Investment Law System, Jarrod Wong, Jason Yackee
Michigan Journal of International Law
This article offers the first interdisciplinary critique of transparency in international investment law (“IIL”) that draws on transparency-skeptical and accountability scholarship in political science and public administration. Not only has the expansive IIL literature overlooked these disciplines, but much of it fails to define the core concept of transparency. Building on contributions from the fields of administrative law, international relations, and system theory in classic political science, we provide a novel functionalist account of transparency that traces a line from transparency to accountability to influence in the IIL system.
We make three arguments. First, transparency involves access to data that …
Automating International Human Rights Adjudication, Veronika Fikfak, Laurence R. Helfer
Automating International Human Rights Adjudication, Veronika Fikfak, Laurence R. Helfer
Michigan Journal of International Law
International human rights courts and treaty bodies are increasingly turning to automated decision-making (“ADM”) technologies to expedite and enhance their review of individual complaints. These tribunals have yet to consider many of the legal, normative, and practical issues raised by the use of different types of automation technologies for these purposes. This article offers a comprehensive and balanced assessment of the benefits and challenges of introducing ADM into international human rights adjudication. We argue in favor of using ADM to digitize documents and for internal case management purposes and to make straightforward recommendations regarding registration, inadmissibility, and the calculation of …
Join The Military And Lose Your Kids: An Exploration Of The Adverse Effects Of Military Service In Child Custody Determinations, Cortland T. B. Boechler
Join The Military And Lose Your Kids: An Exploration Of The Adverse Effects Of Military Service In Child Custody Determinations, Cortland T. B. Boechler
Journal of Legislation
Servicemembers do not lose their fundamental rights when they join the military, but in practicality, many lose their parental rights the moment they enlist. Many servicemembers lose custody because judges often interpret service and duty relocations as incongruent to the best interest of the child. Presumably, many judges lack the understanding that military service brings familial stability. That being the case, Congress should add a provision in the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act requiring judges to consider all the benefits of military service in the "best interest of the child" analysis. This solution gives military parents a fighting chance to keep …
Why We Need A Merger Cap: An Antitrust Lesson From General Electric, Carl T. Bogus
Why We Need A Merger Cap: An Antitrust Lesson From General Electric, Carl T. Bogus
Journal of Legislation
This Article makes a modest proposal from a radical perspective. The proposal is this: Once a firm reaches a certain size, it should be prohibited from growing larger through mergers or acquisitions. The radical perspective is that antitrust law should be concerned with corporate size. It was a century ago that Louis D. Brandeis coined the term “curse of bigness,” and his concern about the social and political consequences of corporate size has long since fallen out of favor. Today, the consensus view is that antitrust should be concerned exclusively with economics. Current doctrine allows corporations to merge, provided only …

303 Creative, Exclusive Private Enforcement, And Blue-State Revenge, Howard M. Wasserman, Charles W. “Rocky” Rhodes
Journal of Legislation
Red states have made exclusive private enforcement schemes targeting locally unpopular but constitutionally protected conduct a cornerstone of culture-war legal strategy. Laws such the Texas Heartbeat Act (“S.B. 8”) in 2021 and anti-“WOKE” laws forego public enforcement in favor of private enforcement; this forces targeted federal rights-holders to vindicate their rights by raising the law’s constitutional invalidity as a defense to liability rather than through pre-enforcement offensive litigation against the government or government officials responsible for enforcing the law. This threatens rights-holders with a wave of costly and burdensome litigation and liability.
Blue states and liberal scholars and advocates have …
How Socially Comparing Emerging Research Institutions To Established Research Institutions Informs Proposed Amendments To The Bayh Dole Act, Clovia Hamilton
How Socially Comparing Emerging Research Institutions To Established Research Institutions Informs Proposed Amendments To The Bayh Dole Act, Clovia Hamilton
Marquette Intellectual Property & Innovation Law Review
Emerging research institutions have a problem with their lack of tech transfer, including start-up business formations. This study investigates that issue using social comparison theory as the framework for a novel experimental design. A group of 245 respondents, comprised of STEM faculty members and STEM administrators at emerging research institutions, completed a stated- choice survey based on the social comparison theory. The respondents were assessed on the level and extent that they compare their emerging research institution to well established research institutions with respect to research, technology commercialization, and academic entrepreneurship. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in America were …

A Call For North Carolina To Allow Children To Express Their Wishes In Child Custody Proceedings, A Given Right Established In Binding Precedent, Katelynn Gallimore
Campbell Law Review
The purpose of this Comment is to advocate for amending North Carolina’s child custody statute, N.C. Gen. Stat. section 50-13, to require the court to consider a child’s preference as to their custody arrangements to further align with legal precedent. This Comment illustrates the importance of allowing a child to express their wishes to determine the custodial arrangement that is in the best interests of that child. This Comment uses statutes from other states as guidance for proposing reform to the North Carolina General Assembly to consider and propose new legislation. In addition, the right of a child to express …

Development Of Stalling Detection Algorithms And Operator Behavior Models For Evaluating Hydraulic Excavator Performance, Mateo Fernando Montenegro Defaz
Development Of Stalling Detection Algorithms And Operator Behavior Models For Evaluating Hydraulic Excavator Performance, Mateo Fernando Montenegro Defaz
Masters Theses
This study aims to develop a reliable algorithm for stalling detection and investigate how operator behaviors impact the truck-loading process, focusing on swing and bucket rotations. While the study of excavator digging conditions and equipment performance is well understood, describing stalling from telemetry data and the influence of operators’ behavior on overall system efficiency remain underexplored. This study seeks to: (i) develop a reliable algorithm for stall detection by analyzing key operational variables such as velocity and angles; (ii) implement statistical and machine learning techniques, specifically a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification algorithm, to differentiate between ideal and non-ideal digging …

The Venue Shopping Strategies Of Atlantic Northeast Environmental Groups: Regulating The Cooling Water Intake Of Coal-Fired Power Plants, Aaron J. Ley, Bryce B. Dubois
Political Science Faculty Publications
In 2011, two massive, closed-cycle cooling towers were constructed at the base of a coal-fired power plant in Somerset, Massachusetts, to mitigate the plant’s contribution to the ecological problem of declining fish populations. The U.S. political system allows for policy problems like this to be solved through a variety of policymaking venues. Of these venues, this case explains how environmental stakeholders in Rhode Island and Massachusetts entered the regulatory venue and seized on the Clean Water Act’s Section 316(b) provisions to regulate the power plant’s intake of cooling water from the Mount Hope Bay. It specifically demonstrates how groups used …
