Building A Culture Of Preparedness: Using Community Emergency Response Teams To Promote Preparedness Behavior, Joseph Faulk Jan 2025

Building A Culture Of Preparedness: Using Community Emergency Response Teams To Promote Preparedness Behavior, Joseph Faulk

Theses and Dissertations

Communities throughout the nation use the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program to supplement the disaster response after hazard events as well as help build a culture of preparedness. Currently, practitioners and academics have limited knowledge about how CERTs promote enhanced preparedness postures. To address that knowledge gap, 20 CERT program managers were interviewed in this study to improve the general understanding of how CERTs contribute to developing a preparedness culture. The results identify program activities, objectives, and measures. In addition, this study introduces the Preparedness Behavior Change Model and collects feedback on its usefulness, which suggests it has a …

Mutual Realm, Tyna Ontko Jan 2025

Mutual Realm, Tyna Ontko

Theses and Dissertations

mutual realm is a container for my many meandering thoughts on speculative futures, present-day-truth-telling, and the everyday construction of histories. Informed by systems of belief and power that humans have created to grapple with the unknown, the writing illustrates how storytelling builds worlds, assigning value to things by inscribing them with desire. In parts fact and fantasy, sculpture is considered as a form of sorting, making known the ways in which my experience of living between publics whose methods for demarcating boundaries, communally agreed upon superstitions, and algorithms for assigning meaning have marked my unconscious and affect my daily trajectories. …

Into Thick Air: Adapting Cultural Practices Into Solutions For Modern Wicked Problems, Syed Muhammad Erzum Naqvi Jan 2025

Into Thick Air: Adapting Cultural Practices Into Solutions For Modern Wicked Problems, Syed Muhammad Erzum Naqvi

Theses and Dissertations

Into Thick Air argues that cultural practices can inspire solutions

to challenging modern problems. This project employs the Basant

festival as a case study to critically reimagine kite flying as a

collective practice with the potential to contribute to the reduction

of air pollution in Lahore, a city consistently ranked among those

with the poorest air quality globally. By building kites from fabric

treated with nanoparticle coatings, Into Thick Air transforms a

traditional community activity into an accessible, citizen-driven

method for removing pollutants from the air. The treated kites

empower Lahoris to take charge of their environment while

encouraging collective …

Civic Conservation Workshop: A User Manual For Creating A Makerspace Dedicated To Historic Preservation, Building Repair, And Civic Engagement, Madeleine Bean

Theses and Dissertations

Research Abstract:

Democracy depends on citizens’ participation at all levels, from local to national; moreover, engagement in one’s community is directly correlated with greater reported feelings of happiness and trust (Cox et al., 2021). This research examines how makerspaces can act as civic hubs that promote inclusive community interaction, facilitate the exchange of cultural and skills-based knowledge, encourage civic discourse, and serve as sites for political engagement through the provision of tools and resources that focus on historic home repair/preservation and craft-based trades. Specifically, this study proposes the development and design of a preservation-focused makerspace in Jackson Ward, a historically …

A Qualitative Exploration Of The Employment Experiences And Coping Strategies Among Transgender Women In Medellín, Colombia., Paola Marcela Roldan Jan 2025

A Qualitative Exploration Of The Employment Experiences And Coping Strategies Among Transgender Women In Medellín, Colombia., Paola Marcela Roldan

Theses and Dissertations

Transgender individuals face disproportionate employment discrimination, with unemployment rates five times higher than the general population. Despite growing awareness of workplace diversity, transgender women continue to experience systemic barriers to economic security and professional fulfillment. This dissertation examines the employment experiences and coping strategies of transgender women in Medellín, Colombia, a city characterized by both progressive policies and persistent challenges. Using an exploratory-descriptive qualitative design, this study employed reflexive thematic analysis of in-depth interviews with 18 transgender women. Two theoretical frameworks—Puwar's "Bodies Out of Place" and Minority Stress Theory—guided the analysis of how transgender women navigate predominantly cisgender employment environments. …

Electing The Supreme Court, Dmitry Bam Jan 2025

Electing The Supreme Court, Dmitry Bam

Faculty Publications

There is a curious irony in how we select United States Supreme Court justices. According to basic constitutional theory, as well as the arguments made by many leading Framers at the time of the Founding, one of the Court’s primary roles is to serve as a check on the executive and legislative branches when they exceed the constitutional limits imposed by the American people. Yet, we ask those very branches to jointly select the justices responsible for enforcing these limits, leaving the American people with only an indirect (if any) role in the process. Not surprisingly, the justices nominated by …

Flexural Strength Of (Hf,Nb,Ta,Ti,Zr)B2–(Hf,Nb,Ta,Ti,Zr)C High-Entropy Dual-Phase Ceramics, Rubia Hassan, William G. Fahrenholtz, Gregory E. Hilmas, Jeremy Watts

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The room and elevated temperature flexural strengths were measured for (Hf,Nb,Ta,Ti,Zr)B2–(Hf,Nb,Ta,Ti,Zr)C high-entropy dual-phase ceramics. The fracture of ceramics originated from two distinct flaw populations that were either surface defects introduced during specimen preparation or volume defects introduced during processing. The average strength at room temperature was 638 ± 94 MPa with individual bars strengths as high as ∼800 MPa. At 1800°C, average strength increased to 786 ± 265 MPa with individual bar strengths as high as ∼1050 MPa. Above 1800°C, creep dominated resulting in deformation of the bars without fracture. The fracture mode changed from completely trans granular at room …

Utilization Of Golden Pennycress In Broiler Diets, Marley M. Knowles Jan 2025

Utilization Of Golden Pennycress In Broiler Diets, Marley M. Knowles

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study was to evaluate performance in broiler chickens fed diets containing golden pennycress meal (GPCM), with and without a flavor additive. Golden pennycress (Thlaspi arvense) is a winter cover crop grown in the Midwest that is rising in popularity as a cash crop used for biofuel production. After oil is pressed out of the seeds, a meal remains that is usually discarded. Incorporation of this meal (23% protein, 15% fat) into feedstuffs for broilers would be an efficient way to make biofuel production more sustainable. In one study, Cornish Cross three-day-old chicks (n=12) were …

Supervisor Support And Job Satisfaction: The Mediating Roles Of Work-Life Balance And Perceived Employability With Gender As A Moderator, Tori Lomelino

Theses and Dissertations

This study explored the relationship between supervisor support and job satisfaction, offering work-life balance and perceived employability as key mechanisms through which this relationship occurs. It also explored gender differences in the relationship between work-life balance and job satisfaction, and perceived employability and job satisfaction. Participants were full-time employees in the U.S, recruited via Prolific, who completed an online survey. While supervisor support was found to have positively influenced job satisfaction through perceived employability, the role of work-life balance was less clear. Interaction effects including gender were not significant. This study highlights the significant role of perceived employability as a …

Journal Articles: Internal Medicine

Alcohol-induced organ damage is a major global health concern and a leading cause of disability and mortality. In addition to the liver, chronic alcohol consumption adversely affects multiple organ systems, including the cardiovascular and neuromuscular systems, the gastrointestinal tract, adipose tissue, kidneys, pancreas, and the brain. Organ damage begins with necrosis (cell death) followed by tissue injury, which triggers immune responses aimed at tissue repair. However, with continued heavy drinking, these reparative responses transition into inflammatory responses which exacerbate tissue injury and accelerate disease progression. Macroautophagy, commonly referred to as autophagy, is a vital and evolutionarily-conserved digestive process in eukaryotic …

Individualized Care Plans For High Utilizers, Nicholas Weiland, Brady Bulian, Ashlyn O'Leary, Jana L. Wardian, Tabatha Matthias

Journal Articles: Hospital Medicine

Frequently admitted patients (i.e., ‘high utilizers’) comprise a small percentage of all patients yet consume a relatively large proportion of hospital resources. This quality improvement project aimed to reduce hospital resource utilization by implementing individualized care plans (ICPs) for high utilizers. An electronic health record (EHR) report identified high utilizers. A hospitalist workgroup then selected patients who were relatively young with frequent low-risk admissions. The workgroup created and documented ICPs in the EHR, then linked to the ICPs from numerous locations. For the selected patients, total admissions per year were reduced from 125 to 41 (-67%) and days per year …

Veterinary Science Faculty Publications

The growing prevalence of antimicrobial resistance has significantly compromised the efficacy of conventional antibiotic-based interventions in controlling Salmonella infections across human and veterinary settings. This growing challenge necessitates a strategic rethinking of pathogen control, prompting the integration of next-generation therapeutics capable of disrupting Salmonella pathogenesis through novel, antibiotic-sparing mechanisms. In this context, a diverse array of emerging alternatives, including bacteriophages, antimicrobial peptides, probiotics, prebiotics, short-chain fatty acids, nanoparticles, and host-directed immunomodulators, have gained prominence as a promising frontier in non-antibiotic therapeutics. These modalities offer targeted approaches to inhibit Salmonella colonization, virulence expression, and persistence, while minimizing collateral damage to the …

International Law And The Rise Of Populism, Shruti Rana, Peter G. Danchin, Jeremy Farrall, Jolyon Ford, Imogen Saunders

Faculty Publications

Contemporary legal scholarship seeks to diagnose populist antagonism towards national and international law and warn about the challenges it poses to the cooperation needed to respond to global threats. What this scholarship overlooks, however, is the role that major shifts in international legal normativity and conceptions of global governance have themselves played in incubating the conditions far the rise of populism. Against the prevailing literature, this Article argues that the key to unlocking this puzzle is recognition that populism, rather than constituting an external social pathology, is a mode of politics arising internal to the intellectual history and practice of …

When Is Discrimination Harmful?, Sandra F. Sperino Jan 2025

When Is Discrimination Harmful?, Sandra F. Sperino

Faculty Publications

In Muldrow v. City of St. Louis, the Supreme Court held that Title VII does not require a plaintiff to establish material harm to prove employment discrimination. Instead, any action that is negative and affects a term, condition or privilege of employment is sufficient, if the employer took the action because of a protected trait.

At first glance, Muldrow appears to be a middling case focused on a technical aspect of discrimination law. This Article argues that Muldrow has the potential to be one of the most important modern discrimination cases. If taken to its natural conclusion it will …

Moore Questions, Some Answers: Fixing The Personal Tax System Despite Constitutional Constraints, David Gamage, John R. Brooks, Edward J. Mccaffery

Faculty Publications

Moore v United States was expected to rule on the constitutional necessity of the tax-law realization requirement originating from Eisner v Macomber, a potential impediment to progressive tax reform efforts aimed at shutting down the planning techniques of Buy Borrow Die. The various opinions in Moore, however, provided no definitive answer to this core question, instead leaving many more questions. Amid the lingering uncertainty, we argue that various responses to the problem of wealthy Americans’ not needing to pay any taxes remain possible after Moore. An incremental, “mix-and-match” approach to progressive tax reform may best suit the …

Church Autonomy, Textualism, And Originalism: Scotus's Use Of History To Give Definition To Church Autonomy Doctrine, Carl H. Esbeck Jan 2025

Church Autonomy, Textualism, And Originalism: Scotus's Use Of History To Give Definition To Church Autonomy Doctrine, Carl H. Esbeck

Faculty Publications

Church autonomy is a First Amendment doctrine altogether distinct from the more familiar causes of action brought under the Establishment Clause and the Free Exercise Clause. The principle of church autonomy was first recognized by the Supreme Court of the United States in the post-Civil War case Watson v. Jones, holding that civil courts must not be drawn into resolving religious questions or settling disputes over church polity. And early this century, in the unanimous decision Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church & School v. EEOC, the theory of church autonomy took on its most fully developed form as a constitutional immunity …

Horizons Of Risk: Climate Stress And The Federal Reserve, David A. Wishnick Jan 2025

Horizons Of Risk: Climate Stress And The Federal Reserve, David A. Wishnick

The University of Chicago Business Law Review

Contemporary financial supervision depends on knowledge about risk. Threats to bank soundness and financial stability abound, but they present themselves in amorphous ways. How should supervisors assess their significance? This Article examines a process being employed by the Federal Reserve (Fed) to assess threats posed by climate change. The process, climate scenario analysis (CSA), models the impact of hypothetical climate-related events on financial market participants. Descriptively, the Article argues that the Fed’s approach to CSA hews closely to the most prominent supervisory innovation to emerge from the Global Financial Crisis: stress testing. With its CSA experiments, the Fed is adapting …

The Cost Of Qui Tam: Assessing The Constitutional Challenges To The False Claims Act, Jonathan Coleman Jan 2025

The Cost Of Qui Tam: Assessing The Constitutional Challenges To The False Claims Act, Jonathan Coleman

The University of Chicago Business Law Review

The federal government’s most powerful tool for combating fraud is the False Claims Act (FCA). The statute targets individuals and entities that submit fraudulent claims for government funds, particularly in healthcare—where it addresses Medicare and Medicaid fraud—and in government contracting, including defense industry overpayments. FCA violators must repay up to three times the government’s losses, along with additional penalties. A key feature of the FCA is its qui tam provision, which allows private citizens, known as relators, to sue violators on behalf of the United States. The statute incentivizes whistleblowing by granting relators 15% to 30% of any successful recovery. …

Generative Ai Meets Section 230: The Future Of Liability And Its Implications For Startup Innovation, Megan E. Cistulli Jan 2025

Generative Ai Meets Section 230: The Future Of Liability And Its Implications For Startup Innovation, Megan E. Cistulli

The University of Chicago Business Law Review

The rapid advancement of generative artificial intelligence (AI) is testing the limits of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, a statute that has long shielded online platforms from liability for user-generated content. This liability shield helped shape the modern internet, but AI’s ability to create its own content blurs the traditional distinction between platforms acting as passive hosts and those functioning as active publishers. As a result, courts and lawmakers are reexamining the scope and future of Section 230. This Comment examines how proposed reforms to Section 230 could impact startups and emerging tech companies that use generative AI …
