Surrogacy Agencies In Canada: Intended Parents' Experiences, Stefanie Carsley
Surrogacy Agencies In Canada: Intended Parents' Experiences, Stefanie Carsley
Canadian Journal of Family Law
This article sheds new light on intended parents’ experiences working with surrogacy agencies—businesses that match surrogates with prospective parents. These agencies contravene the Assisted Human Reproduction Act, a federal law that prohibits commercial surrogacy. Interviews with intended parents suggest that some agencies are taking advantage of surrogates and intended parents and lend support to calls to regulate agencies’ practices. This piece will interest scholars and lawmakers advocating for evidence-based law and policy responses to surrogacy in Canada. It broadens the frame relevant to addressing surrogacy beyond relations between surrogates, intended parents, and children to include a commercial sector.
Evaluating Elective Egg Freezing Consent Materials From Canadian Fertility Clinics, Kathleen Hammond
Evaluating Elective Egg Freezing Consent Materials From Canadian Fertility Clinics, Kathleen Hammond
Canadian Journal of Family Law
The use of elective egg freezing (EEF) has rapidly increased in recent years. Despite its popularity, scholars have documented a host of concerns in relation to the use of this technology, especially given aggressive advertising of EEF by the fertility industry as “insurance” and lack of data about success rates. Informed consent processes, and informed consent materials, are particularly important in situations like EEF where healthy people are undergoing interventions that are neither life nor health preserving. Despite these concerns necessitating a rigorous consent process, no research in Canada has explored consent processes surrounding EEF at Canadian fertility clinics to …
Sorting Out Surrogacy: Three Considerations For Evidence-Informed Law Reform, Vanessa Gruben, Alana Cattapan
Sorting Out Surrogacy: Three Considerations For Evidence-Informed Law Reform, Vanessa Gruben, Alana Cattapan
Canadian Journal of Family Law
This article draws on novel survey research with surrogates in Canada—the Exploring Surrogates Experiences and Insights Survey—to examine three critical issues for potential law reform: (1) reimbursement and compensation (i.e., payment); (2) the work of surrogacy agencies; and (3) surrogacy arrangements involving foreign intended parents. Following a brief history of the regulation of surrogacy in Canada and a description of the survey’s methods, it explores each of these areas in turn, using the survey results to identify considerations for law reform. It argues that while the current legislative and regulatory framework largely addresses key issues related to commercialization and commodification, …

Testing Our Faith: Why It Is Important To Study The Complexity Of Client Experiences In Family Dispute Resolution, Heather Heavin, Brea Lowenberger, Michaela Keet
Canadian Journal of Family Law
Increasingly across Canada, court-based processes are being recast as forums of ‘last resort’ for family conflict. Studies inviting lawyers to reflect on the success of their collaborative negotiations, mediations, and settlement conferences show optimism—faith that the quality of their clients’ experiences has been more positive, or, at least, less damaging. As researchers, however, we know less about how the parties in the midst of separation and divorce actually experience those processes. The Saskatchewan study described in this article suggests that ‘the inside’ of dispute resolution (DR) processes in family conflict might be as qualitatively painful, negative, and difficult as the …
Family Violence And Child Support: Abuse, Shared Parenting, And Special Expenses, Joanna Radbord
Family Violence And Child Support: Abuse, Shared Parenting, And Special Expenses, Joanna Radbord
Canadian Journal of Family Law
This article addresses specific sections of the Federal Child Support Guidelines which are particularly problematic for survivors of family violence: (a) section 9 in relation to child support in circumstances of shared parenting time, and (b) section 7 dealing with special or extraordinary expenses. Child support in Canada currently functions as an application-based system within an adversarial context, which creates significant barriers to child support for victims of abuse. In relation to shared parenting, a presumptive reduction in the quantum of child support is likely to exacerbate systemic inequalities and further disadvantage survivors of family violence—disproportionately women and children. This …
Worthless? Victims Of Family Violence And The (Non)Payment Of Child Support, Joanna Radbord
Worthless? Victims Of Family Violence And The (Non)Payment Of Child Support, Joanna Radbord
Canadian Journal of Family Law
This article details the profound challenges experienced by victims of family violence seeking to access child support. Survivors face physical, mental, and financial barriers to obtaining support. Despite its recognition as the “right of the child,” many survivors forego an application for support altogether. For those victims who bravely attempt to make a claim, they generally confront further abuse and disempowerment within the adversarial litigation process. They often face an overwhelming power imbalance in negotiation, undermining their psychological and financial well-being. If survivors obtain an agreement or order for child support, child support regularly goes unpaid. Given the flaws in …

Institute for Human Development, East Africa
Introduction: Children growing up in arid and semi-arid regions of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) face heightened risks, often resulting in poor developmental outcomes. In Kenya, the arid and semi-arid lands (ASAL) exhibit the lowest health and developmental indicators among children. Despite these risks, some children grow up successfully and overcome the challenges. However, there is limited comprehensive data on sources of risks and resilience in these children, particularly research that incorporates community perspectives and indigenous knowledge. Systematic documentation of factors influencing child outcomes is crucial for understanding the overall burden, informing policy and implementing targeted interventions. This study aimed at …

From Hallways To Healing: Reconceptualizing Schools As Access Points For Adolescent Mental Health By Fostering Student Agency And Supportive Spaces, Jordyn Nattrass
West Chester University Master’s Theses
Adolescents across the United States are struggling with their mental health in record numbers, often without access to adequate support. This paper examines the role of schools as critical access points for all students to receive mental health interventions. I propose the implementation of a school-wide, student-led mental health program that every student participates in during homeroom, with the additional support of a dedicated mental health space. Grounded in the principles of Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR), the program is designed by students, for students, with the goal of fostering student leadership skills. Unlike existing programs that will be explored …
Low Caregiver Engagement In Elementary Education: Exploring The Barriers And Importance Of Meaningful Engagement, Brooke A. Millevoi
Low Caregiver Engagement In Elementary Education: Exploring The Barriers And Importance Of Meaningful Engagement, Brooke A. Millevoi
West Chester University Master’s Theses
Low caregiver engagement in elementary education endures as a significant challenge, with substantial implications for students’ academic achievement, social-emotional development, and overall well-being. Despite decades of research affirming the importance of strong home-school partnerships, systemic inequities, rooted in historical, structural, and policy-based barriers, continue to limit meaningful collaboration between educators and caregivers, particularly in underserved communities. This thesis examines the disconnect between caregivers and key aspects of students’ educational experiences, including academic progress, classroom behavior, and school participation. In response, this work presents the design and implementation of a targeted caregiver engagement program that seeks to dismantle these barriers, foster …
Creating Worlds: Anarchist Education Within And Against The State, Paul B. Berlet
Creating Worlds: Anarchist Education Within And Against The State, Paul B. Berlet
West Chester University Master’s Theses
This thesis shows how contemporary U.S. schooling reproduces domination and erodes freedom by examining education as a mechanism of social reproduction, disciplinary control, surveillance, and neoliberalization. I draw on Foucault, social reproduction theory, Freire, Vygotsky, and anarchist philosophy while using a critical action research lens to name the structural forces that condition obedience, normalize hierarchy, and individualize responsibility. In response, this thesis asks how anarchist pedagogy functions as an antithesis to these forces. This framework leads me to articulate how anarchist education could emerge through prefigurative community building. Educators are capable of helping to create new worlds both within and …
All That May Become A Man: Dynamics Of Gender And Violence In Macbeth, Lauren M. Schuster
All That May Become A Man: Dynamics Of Gender And Violence In Macbeth, Lauren M. Schuster
West Chester University Master’s Theses
The text of Shakespeare’s Macbeth is rife with the language of gender crisis, with the titular character and his wife struggling against the repressive nature of patriarchal gender norms. It is this conflict between individual gender expression and societal ideals of gender that underscores the play’s central conflict, with Lady Macbeth’s rejection of typical femininity as an inciting force for the murder of King Duncan and the chaos that follows. In my reading of Macbeth, I focus on the rhetoric of material sex and gender performativity. In doing so, I examine what such rhetoric suggests about the patriarchal structures …
Exploring Macro- And Microplastic Pollution In Southeastern Pennsylvania Ecosystems, Victoria Moreira
Exploring Macro- And Microplastic Pollution In Southeastern Pennsylvania Ecosystems, Victoria Moreira
West Chester University Master’s Theses
Plastics have become a ubiquitous pollutant due to their increasing production worldwide. Current recycling infrastructure is inadequate, causing most plastics to end up in landfills or the environment, where they can take decades to break down and release additional pollutants in the process. To combat plastic pollution, nearly thirty municipalities in southeastern Pennsylvania have enacted single-use plastic (SUP) bans. We sampled anthropogenic litter from nine stream sites within municipalities with three different SUP ban statuses for seven sampling rounds roughly one month apart. We found that riparian areas within active SUP bans had more SUPs and other plastic items than …
A Survey Of Nurse Practitioners' And Physician Assistants' Students' Preparedness And Interest In Utilizing Physical Activity In Patient Care, Barrett Snyder
A Survey Of Nurse Practitioners' And Physician Assistants' Students' Preparedness And Interest In Utilizing Physical Activity In Patient Care, Barrett Snyder
West Chester University Master’s Theses
Despite the well-documented benefits of physical activity (PA) for physical and mental health, as well as its role in preventing chronic disease and reducing mortality, most individuals fall short of meeting recommended PA guidelines. Although medical professionals recognize the value of PA counseling, several barriers, such as limited academic coverage, time constraints, and lack of reimbursement, have hindered its consistent implementation in clinical practice. To address these challenges, initiatives like Exercise is Medicine (EIM) promote integrating PA as a vital sign and encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, including referrals to Clinical Exercise Physiologists (CEPs), to support PA promotion. This evolving approach presents …
Food And Alcohol Disturbance Norms And Behaviors: Examining Their Association And The Role Of Gender, Victoria E. Peroni
Food And Alcohol Disturbance Norms And Behaviors: Examining Their Association And The Role Of Gender, Victoria E. Peroni
West Chester University Master’s Theses
Food and alcohol disturbance (FAD) is a behavioral pattern that consists of compensatory behaviors, such as dietary restriction and exercise, which are used in conjunction with alcohol consumption. Despite growing research on FAD, its relationship with descriptive social norms and gender differences remains underexplored, particularly in non-college adult populations. The present study examined the prevalence of FAD behaviors, their associations with descriptive norms, and potential gender differences in these relationships. Using a broad-age adult sample recruited through Prolific (n = 727), item-level FAD descriptive norms were analyzed to determine their specific relationship with FAD behaviors. FAD descriptive norms were …

All Under Control: How Trait Emotional Intelligence May Moderate The Effect Of State Arousal On Implicit Attitudes Towards Academic Dishonesty, Daniel J. Moco
West Chester University Master’s Theses
The current study examined predictors in the changing of implicit attitudes toward academic dishonesty (AD). The primary predictor measured was self-reported stress and arousal, the strength of which being a possible influence on one’s change in implicit attitudes. Trait emotional intelligence (EI) was measured as a covariate and potential moderator of the interaction between stress and arousal, and one’s implicit attitudes toward AD. One hundred nine undergraduate psychology students from a public university were recruited to take assessments for trait EI, stress and arousal, and implicit attitudes toward AD. To manipulate the induction of stress and arousal, participants were randomly …

Fares On Fairness: Using A Total Error Framework To Examine The Role Of Measurement And Representation In Training Data On Model Fairness And Bias, Patrick Oliver Schenk, Christoph Kern, Trent D. Buskirk
Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications
Data-driven decisions, often based on predictions from machine learning (ML) models are becoming ubiquitous. For these decisions to be just, the underlying ML models must be fair, i.e., work equally well for all parts of the population such as groups defined by gender or age. What are the logical next steps if, however, a trained model is accurate but not fair? How can we guide the whole data pipeline such that we avoid training unfair models based on inadequate data, recognizing possible sources of unfairness early on? How can the concepts of data-based sources of unfairness that exist in the …

"What Is Title Ix? What's It Mean?": An Instrumental Case Study In Today's Secondary Schools, Kristin Haggerty
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
Sexual harassment and assault, as defined by Title IX, are widespread issues in middle and high schools, yet schools often fail to provide sufficient education to students and staff about the policy and its protections (Grant et al., 2019). Title IX is a federal law designed to ensure fair and equal treatment of students and employees in educational settings while also overseeing the handling and adjudication of sexual misconduct allegations (Klusas, 2003). This study was conducted using instrumental case study research. 36 staff members from the middle school, high school, and administration of a mid-sized school district in Southeastern Pennsylvania …

"Just Understand It": Autistic Student Reflections On Accessibility To Education Abroad, Emily Q. Rooney
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
This research explores the accessibility of study abroad programs for college students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It aimed to fill a significant gap in the current international education landscape. Despite considerable progress towards inclusive study abroad for underrepresented groups, individuals with disabilities face limited opportunities due to perceptions of students’ capabilities while studying abroad. This research used a case study design to gather qualitative data from students who participated in short-term, sensory-friendly cultural immersion study abroad programs. Participants noted that accessibility, support, and decision making happened three times during their study abroad program: (a) pre-departure, (b) while abroad, and …
