White Racial Identity, Climae Change, And Social Attitudes, Alyssa Engle
White Racial Identity, Climae Change, And Social Attitudes, Alyssa Engle
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
This study examined how symbolic racism, political conservativism, and White racial identity predicts attitudes toward climate change among White Americans. Prior research suggests that racial resentment vaticinates social and political judgments beyond explicitly racial domains, including environmental issues and policies which disproportionately harm Black and marginalized communities. Building on this prior research, the present study investigated whether racial identity dimensions predict climate change distress, and whether symbolic racism mediates associations between conservative political orientation and climate concern. Seventythree White undergraduate students completed measures of racial identity, symbolic racism, distrust in climate science, political conservatism, and climate distress. As predicted, a …

Multilinguals And Aphasia: Slp Perspective On Intervention, Matt J. Eby
Brehm Scholars Research
Aphasia is an acquired language disorder typically affecting language production and comprehension, both to varying degrees. Onset of aphasia typically follows a cerebrovascular event, such as a stroke or traumatic brain injury. In this study, particular interest is paid to people with aphasia who conversationally spoke two or more languages pre-onset and the therapists who treat them. Past research has investigated the additional considerations taken when assessing and treating aphasia in multilingual clients, focusing on enhancing therapy efficacy in this population. However, current theoretical and clinical reviews of research often leave out the lived experiences of those involved.

South Dakota's Path Forward: Education Professionals On Formal Free-Standing Sel Competency Standards, Kirsten Biersbach
South Dakota's Path Forward: Education Professionals On Formal Free-Standing Sel Competency Standards, Kirsten Biersbach
Dissertations and Theses
This study employed reflexive thematic analysis (RTA) to examine South Dakota general education teachers’ perceptions and experiences with the implementation of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) in the absence of formal, free-standing SEL competency standards. As one of the few states without such standards in K-12 education, South Dakota presents a unique context for examining how educators navigate SEL practices in the absence of consistent state-level guidance. Grounded in a qualitative, constructivist paradigm, this research aims to inform future educational policy and practice by amplifying the voices of practitioners who are often overlooked in top-down reform processes. A comprehensive literature review established …

A Rare Case Of Non-Traumatic Rhabdomyolysis And Acute Kidney Injury Following Influenza A Infection, Josefina Barrera, Michael Dearman, Vincent Hoang, John Givler
School of Medicine Student Publications and Presentations
Introduction: Influenza-induced rhabdomyolysis is a recognized but rare complication of influenza A infection. During the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, several cases of rhabdomyolysis associated with influenza were reported, highlighting the potential for severe extrapulmonary manifestations of the virus.
Case: A 24-year-old African American male with no significant medical history initially presented to a freestanding emergency room with fevers, chills, congestion, and body aches. Subsequently, he tested positive for influenza A and prescribed benzonatate, methocarbamol and promethazine. He returned four days later with persistent severe myalgias and dark urine consistent with rhabdomyolysis and evidenced by a creatine kinase level exceeding 20,000 U/L …

Identifying Doxorubicin-Induced Cardiotoxicity Using 4d Echocardiography, Bea O. Cabot, Cortland Johns, Benjamin Zeidler, Anna Webb, Wilhelm Smith, Aasish Karuturi, Craig J. Goergen
Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship
Doxorubicin is an effective, commonly used chemotherapeutic drug. However, this drug is accompanied with disadvantages. Specifically, doxorubicin is associated with cardiotoxicity, characterized by left ventricle dysfunction. We hypothesize that 4D ultrasound imaging can reveal cardiac changes associated with doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity earlier in disease progression than 2D ultrasound imaging. To test this hypothesis, C57BL/6J mice were separated into treatment or control groups. Intraperitoneal injections were administered weekly for 4 weeks, each dosage equivalent to 4 mg/kg of either doxorubicin (treated) or saline (control). A Vevo3100 high frequency ultrasound system (FUJIFILM VisualSonics) was used to collect 2D and 4D ultrasound images of …
The Hidden Pain Of Family Policing, Shanta Trivedi
The Hidden Pain Of Family Policing, Shanta Trivedi
All Faculty Scholarship
The child welfare system ostensibly exists to protect children. However, its methods—investigating allegations of abuse and neglect, filing cases against parents in court, removing children from their parents, and, in thousands of cases each year, permanently severing the legal relationship between children and their parents—have been shown to inflict great harm on children, despite the system’s stated goal. This Article looks at the system’s impact from a different angle: the harm to parents. It is both common sense and a proven fact that a child’s well-being depends in large part on the health and well-being of their parents. Yet the …

The Impact Of Facility Dogs On College Students' Stress Management And Emotional Regulation, Anna Reichert
Undergraduate Symposium
College is a demanding transitional time where students are experiencing new friendships and personal growth. During this time, mental health issues can surface which impact emotional well-being. Studies have shown that dogs reduce stress, anxiety, depression, encourage exercise, lower blood pressure, and raise oxytocin and dopamine levels (American Heart Association, 2021). Eastern Michigan University introduced their own facility dog Tinker, a two-year-old golden retriever. Since Fall 2024, she has provided emotional comfort and relief to students and the campus community. Surveying results show Tinker’s impact on stress management and ability to regulate emotions for EMU students.

Investigating The Metabolic Impact Of Metformin And Berberine In Combination With Venetoclax For Acute Myeloid Leukaemia Treatment, Samantha Robins
School of Biomedical Sciences Theses
Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) stands as a significant challenge in haematological malignancies, particularly due to poor outcomes in older patients and resistance to therapy. BCL-2, an anti-apoptotic protein, is overexpressed in AML. The BCL-2 antagonist Venetoclax inhibits OXPHOS and induces apoptosis in AML cells, which is potentiated when combined with Metformin an anti-hyperglycaemic agent used to treat type 2 diabetes, which also has anti-cancer properties. This study explored the effects of Venetoclax combined with Metformin or Berberine, an herbal supplement with a similar mechanism of action to metformin, on AML cell death and metabolic changes. The combination of Metformin and …

Glaciers As A Secondary Source Of Anthropogenic Contaminants: An Emerging Socio-Environmental Challenge, Dylan Beard
Glaciers As A Secondary Source Of Anthropogenic Contaminants: An Emerging Socio-Environmental Challenge, Dylan Beard
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Glaciers provide vital ecosystem services, including water resources, habitat provision, and food and energy security. Once considered pristine, glaciers are now known to accumulate various contaminants, including fallout radionuclides (FRNs) and potentially toxic elements (PTEs), which can pose risks to downstream communities when released through meltwater. This thesis examines the accumulation and potential release of contaminants from glacial environments, with a focus on cryoconite, a contaminant-rich material found on glacier surfaces.Primary data collection and laboratory analyses were conducted on cryoconite samples from the High Arctic and the Peruvian Andes to assess spatial variability in contaminant levels and chemical availability. Additionally, …
Evaluating Sediment Storage Time For Improved Management Of River Basin Pollution, Enrique Munoz Arcos
Evaluating Sediment Storage Time For Improved Management Of River Basin Pollution, Enrique Munoz Arcos
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Excess fine sediment supply and associated contaminants can have detrimental effects on water quality and river ecology, with sediment deposition on, and subsequent infiltration into, streambed substrate impacting riverine habitats. Significant research has assessed the magnitude, controls, and impacts of fine sediment in river channels. Assessment of the associated time scales, however, across these three domains has received less attention due in part to the complexity of river basin sediment dynamics. Fallout radionuclides (FRNs) applied as particle tracers in aquatic ecosystems can address this challenge. Herein, this research aimed to evaluate sediment storage time through application and development of FRN …

Crossing The Rubicon: Assembling A Litigation Colossus In Mass Torts, Samir D. Parikh
Crossing The Rubicon: Assembling A Litigation Colossus In Mass Torts, Samir D. Parikh
Michigan Law Review Online
In 2021, Arizona created the alternative business structure (ABS), which allows nonattorneys to own a firm that provides legal services and actively participate in firm management. Scholars have argued that this new paradigm will erode the attorney-client relationship. This represents a legitimate concern. Conflict- ing fiduciary duties can complicate key moments in case resolution. But the impact of Arizona’s shift is more seismic. The true threat does not involve nonattorneys owning a law firm but, rather, private equity firms vertically in- tegrating the entire mass-tort machinery. The endgame is a litigation colossus that rolls up law firms, marketers, claim aggregators, …
