Theorizing Gender And Social Movements Beyond The Binary, Nancy Whittier Jan 2025

Theorizing Gender And Social Movements Beyond The Binary, Nancy Whittier

Sociology: Faculty Books

This innovative Handbook examines how gender shapes social activism and is shaped by activism. With a unique interdisciplinary focus, it explores the effects of the gender binary on experiences of activism, considering how different movements negotiate and, at times, challenge these traditional conceptions. It then moves beyond the binary to explore how gender is challenged by contemporary movements.

Expert authors discuss the impact and limitations of the gender binary, using examples such as the MeToo movement to demonstrate how viewing men and women as separate, monolithic categories results in countless differences being overlooked. Chapters present a range of global and …

Bridge To Stability: A Recovery And Employment Program For Homeless Individuals In Washington D.C., Jalayah Bannister, Sanaa Evans, Jerry Harrison, Joseph John, Echezonachukwu Nmoh, Medha Kurukunda

DC Health and Academic Prep Program (DC HAPP)

In Washington, D.C. the total number of homeless individuals in 2024 was 5,616 people (Homelessness in D.C., n.d.). Amongst this population, substance misuse is 1.5% higher in homeless populations versus low-income peoples with housing (Mosel, 2025). This increased vulnerability to substance use disorder (SUD) significantly contributes to a cycle of relapsing, unemployment, and housing instability. Our program, Bridge to Stability, works to address two interconnected challenges: substance use disorder and chronic homelessness. By combining shelter, rapid access to treatment, peer mentorship, and job training, this intervention creates a structured and inclusive bridge to long-term recovery for homeless populations experiencing SUD. …

S.O.M.: Sexed On The Move, Mikal Kidane, Michael Wang, Jevonte Mccollum, Aliah Gombio, Maraki Gelgalo, Sana Hafiz

DC Health and Academic Prep Program (DC HAPP)

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) remain a major public-health challenge in the United States, particularly among young people. Washington, D.C. reflects this trend: the metropolitan area ranks ninth-highest nationwide, with 1,081 reported STD cases per 100,000 residents—including 22,829 cases of chlamydia, 136 of gonorrhea, and 1,085 of syphilis (Vilakazi, 2024). Most cases are concentrated in Wards 7 and 8, where many young adults lack access to comprehensive sex education and clinical care.

Our project, SexEd on the Move (S.O.M.), tackles this gap by sending mobile clinics into low-income neighborhoods throughout the District. We start with peer-led theater and poetry workshops to …

Doug Laycock And Creativity In Restitution—The Henrietta Lacks Litigation As A Test Case, Doug Rendleman, Caprice L. Roberts Jan 2025

Doug Laycock And Creativity In Restitution—The Henrietta Lacks Litigation As A Test Case, Doug Rendleman, Caprice L. Roberts

Scholarly Articles

This Article explores the Henrietta Lacks litigation as a test case for Professor Laycock's writings and theories on the law of unjust enrichment and restitution remedies. A series of modern lawsuits brought by the Lacks Estate allege that defendant companies continue to make unjust profits with knowledge of the unsavory provenance of the Henrietta Lacks immortal cell line. The only count in the complaints is unjust enrichment. The core remedy is restitutionary disgorgement of unjust gains. The authors connect the novel nature of the lawsuits to foundational restitution principles. Professor Laycock's scholarly articles, books, and law reform projects bring deeper …

Reimagining Compliance: Explainable Ai Models For Financial Regulatory Audits, Hrishikesh Desai Jan 2025

Reimagining Compliance: Explainable Ai Models For Financial Regulatory Audits, Hrishikesh Desai

Faculty Publications

This chapter develops an analytical model for Explainable AI (XAI) designed to support major types of banking regulatory compliance audits. Financial institutions increasingly rely on AI for efficiency in compliance tasks, but the opacity of complex models creates challenges in meeting regulatory transparency requirements. The proposed mathematical framework incorporates explainability as a quantifiable constraint in the optimization of AI models across five critical audit categories: CAMELS examinations, BSA/AML compliance, Consumer Compliance, IT Audits, and Internal Audits. By quantifying explainability through information- theoretic measures and Shapley values, the model balances predictive performance with regulatory requirements. The methodology is validated through a …

I Can See A Future… Creative Ways To Talk About Climate Change, Georgia Young Jan 2025

I Can See A Future… Creative Ways To Talk About Climate Change, Georgia Young

MESM Major Papers

Though a majority of Americans accept climate change as a reality, most people are hesitant to discuss the issue. And the implications of climate silence have far-reaching effects, including less action on climate change. This project synthesizes recent research on climate change, climate silence, and climate action to create a workbook-style zine. This tool is meant to help people who are concerned about the changing climate have generative, deep conversations about this crisis. Through a literature review, a first-person interview, and centering inclusive science communication principles, I created I can see a future: Creative ways to talk about climate change. …

The Green Advantage: An Analysis Of Open Access Publications At A Mid-Sized University, Lisa M. Rose-Wiles, Maria A. Barca Jan 2025

The Green Advantage: An Analysis Of Open Access Publications At A Mid-Sized University, Lisa M. Rose-Wiles, Maria A. Barca

Library Publications

Introduction: The escalating cost of journals, loss of access to research results, and mandates by funding agencies favor Open Access (OA). The suggestion that OA publications are cited more than those behind paywalls should appeal to faculty where citations are critical for promotion and tenure. Further, the option to publish Green OA without cost would be advantageous to faculty who lack financial support for OA publications.

Methods: We used data from Scopus to analyze field weighted citation counts (FWCI) for OA publications over 20 years in terms of OA type, document type, subject area, and subject normalized impact factor.

Application Of A New Learning Company Layers Model Through Participatory Action Research, Donald L. Jones Jan 2025

Application Of A New Learning Company Layers Model Through Participatory Action Research, Donald L. Jones

Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)

Objective: This dissertation utilized Participatory Action Research to explore the impact of implementing a new learning organization model in the field, The Learning Company Layers Model. The concept of a learning organization was made popular by Senge (1990/2006) and further advanced by Gilley and Maycunich (2000a), who expanded the idea that employee development involved more than training. Studies indicating that these models have not been widely adopted by organizational leadership inspired the development of a new model using an adult learning-supported, layered approach as a potential introductory phase of such a transition.

Method: The literature review examined the …

Equity Implications Of The Unchanged Federal Minimum Wage Since 2009, Yali Pang Phd, Nakeina E. Douglas-Glenn Phd, Cameron Williams, Research Institute For Social Equity Rise

Research Institute for Social Equity

This year marks 16 years since the federal minimum wage was raised in 2009. It is the longest period in its history without any increase. Even though over 20 states increased their minimum wage rates in 2025, there are still 20 states adhering to the federal minimum wage of $7.25. While the minimum wage at the federal level and in many states has remained stagnant, the prices of all life essentials have continued to increase across the country, with $1 in July 2009 having the same buying power of $1.46 in July 2024. Today, an individual needs an hourly wage …

Disseminating Evidence-Based Assessments To Educators In South Africa And Vietnam Through Behavioural Skills Training, Andresa A. De Souza, Dani M. Pizzella, Cong Van Tran, Nicolette V. Roman

Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works

Students’ interfering behaviour is a common concern among educators working in special and general education classrooms. Interfering behaviour can significantly compromise students’ educational experiences and educators’ ability to create a conducive learning environment. Evidence-based assessments and interventions for interfering behaviour in the classroom involve identifying the variables in the student’s immediate environment influencing these behaviours. There has been little to no dissemination of evidence-based assessments for classroom management in developing nations such as South Africa and Vietnam. In the current study, we used a single-case design to assess the effectiveness and acceptability of behavioural skills training (BST) in teaching educators …

What Causes Democratic Backsliding In Latin America? A Comparative Case Study Of Brazil, Chile, El Salvador, And Costa Rica, Samantha Foshee Jan 2025

What Causes Democratic Backsliding In Latin America? A Comparative Case Study Of Brazil, Chile, El Salvador, And Costa Rica, Samantha Foshee

Honors Program Theses

This study examines the causes of democratic backsliding in Latin America, comparing Brazil, Chile, El Salvador, and Costa Rica. Events like the January 8th, 2023 riot in Brazil and the use of intimidation tactics by President Bukele in El Salvador demonstrate the erosion that these two countries have faced. On the other hand, Chile and Costa Rica have maintained stable democracies. This study aims to understand what caused these countries’ different paths by examining the levels of political polarization, party deterioration, citizen dissatisfaction, and the presence of populist leaders. Overall, it was found that polarization and party deterioration increase the …

Exploring The Nexus Of Climate Change, Energy Poverty, And Resilience Through Social Enterprises, Bupe Kunda Jan 2025

Exploring The Nexus Of Climate Change, Energy Poverty, And Resilience Through Social Enterprises, Bupe Kunda

Honors Program Theses

This thesis examines how social enterprises address the nexus of climate change, energy poverty, and resilience in Zambia. Despite abundant renewable resources, only 34% of Zambians have electricity access, with stark urban-rural disparities (67% vs 14.5%). Using a qualitative multiple case study approach, this research analyzes ZESCO Limited, Muhanya Solar Limited, and Nyimba Energy Service Company (NESCO) through an integrated theoretical framework combining Social-Ecological-Technical Systems (SETS), energy justice, and social entrepreneurship theories. The study reveals that social enterprises demonstrate innovative approaches including NESCO's energy service company model and Muhanya's prepaid metering system, yet face significant challenges achieving financial sustainability and …

Gallium Β-Cyclodextrin Nanoparticles Containing Both Gallium Protoporphyrin And Gallium Nitrate Exhibit Antimicrobial Activity Against Nontuberculous Mycobacteria In Vitro And In Vivo, Seoung-Ryoung Choi, Bradley E. Britigan, Prabagaran Narayanasamy Jan 2025

Britigan, Prabagaran Narayanasamy

Journal Articles: Pulmonary & Critical Care Med

Effective and safe antibiotics active against pathogenic mycobacterial species are needed. Iron is an essential element for bacterial survival. Ga(NO3)3 (GN) and Ga protoporphyrin (GP) as iron mimetics have each been shown to inhibit the iron metabolism and growth of various mycobacterial species. In this study, the dual cyclodextrin nanoparticle (CDGPGN) is prepared that carries GP and GN using a sonication homogenization technique to increase the efficacy of the combination therapy. CDGPGN shows a long-acting antimicrobial activity against Mycobacteroides abscessus residing in monocyte-derived macrophages (MDM). A murine pulmonary study showed that the CDGPGN also inhibited the growth …

Sylvan Rhetoric In The Planes Of Plato’S Phaedrus, Madison Jones Jan 2025

Sylvan Rhetoric In The Planes Of Plato’S Phaedrus, Madison Jones

Professional and Public Writing Faculty Publications

Over the past few decades, Plato’s Phaedrus has become an important text for scholars interested in tracing new materialist approaches to the history of rhetoric and writing. Drawing on rhetoric and plant studies scholarship, this essay contributes to this conversation by arguing that trees disclose an important layer of irony in the dialogue, producing a deep, if not ambivalent, unity that brings together rhetoric, writing, and discourse. Through a study of trees in the dialogue, this essay demonstrates how the Phaedrus offers rich connections between spatial, nonhuman, and ecological dimensions of writing, rhetoric, and discourse.
