Ablation Vs Drug Therapy For Long-Term Outcomes Of Atrial Fibrillation, Taylor Yaw Jan 2025

Ablation Vs Drug Therapy For Long-Term Outcomes Of Atrial Fibrillation, Taylor Yaw

The PA Department Journal of Medical Science

Introduction: Atrial fibrillation (AF), a rapid and irregular arrhythmia, is the most common cause of cardiac-related stroke and other serious complications for those affected. The first-line treatment for long-term rhythm control of AF remains in question and simplification of therapy would be a significant development. This review aims to determine the efficacy of ablation versus antiarrhythmic drug therapy for the treatment of AF.

Methods: A search via PubMed using the keywords ablation* AND drug therapy* AND atrial fibrillation* AND long-term effects produced 770 results. Results were consolidated by excluding those without full text. Filters were set to randomized control trials …

End-Stage Renal Disease: A Clinical Review On Renal Replacement Therapy Outcomes, Mckenzie T. Lawrence

The PA Department Journal of Medical Science

Introduction: End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is a worldwide issue that occurs when the kidneys fail to filter out harmful waste from the blood. The only treatment options for patients with this diagnosis are kidney transplant, hemodialysis (HD), and peritoneal dialysis (PD). HD involves surgical prep with vascular access and is only performed in clinic. HD is also the most commonly used form of renal replacement therapy (RRT). Peritoneal dialysis is performed through the peritoneum and can be done in clinic or at home. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the overall patient outcomes in those undergoing HD compared …

Disability As Identity, Jessica Schomberg Jan 2025

Disability As Identity, Jessica Schomberg

Library Services Publications

This chapter will focus on disability as an identity category: who gets to claim it, who gets to refuse it, and who has it thrust on them against their will. It will also talk about the power that comes from claiming disability identities and being in community with disabled people. This chapter will not discuss nondisabled as an identity category, nor will it discuss caregiver identities. With that basic understanding, we can work to move conversations about disability in libraries beyond the minimal expectations of inclusion and to a more joyous celebration of disabled people as full participants in library …

The Influence Of Generative Artificial Intelligence On Leadership: An Exploration Of Technology Professionals' Perceptions Regarding Leadership, Adaptation, And Organizational Culture In The Digital Age, Paul Thomas Herdman Jan 2025

The Influence Of Generative Artificial Intelligence On Leadership: An Exploration Of Technology Professionals' Perceptions Regarding Leadership, Adaptation, And Organizational Culture In The Digital Age, Paul Thomas Herdman

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The emergence of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has introduced new complexities for organizational leadership, requiring technology professionals to adapt in real time to evolving digital tools, strategic demands, and cultural dynamics. Although prior research has examined AI’s broad influence on business processes, few studies have explored how technology leaders experience and interpret the leadership challenges and opportunities arising from GenAI. This qualitative dissertation addressed that gap by investigating the perceptions of senior technology professionals regarding GenAI’s influence on leadership roles, competencies, decision making, and organizational culture. Using Lanigan’s (1977) phenomenological method of human science, this study explored the lived experiences …

What Would You Have Done? Learning From Others' Aviation Safety Events, Jolene Feldman, Sepehr Bastami, Jon Holbrook

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

The capacity to learn from both expected and unexpected events has beenidentified as a critical component of resilient performance. One’s ownexperiences, however, are not the only opportunities to learn from these types ofevents. In the aviation domain, operator-submitted safety event reports can alsoprovide a rich source of opportunity for learning from what others haveexperienced. In addition to maintaining the world’s largest collection ofvoluntarily submitted aviation safety incident reports, NASA’s Aviation SafetyReporting System (ASRS) also publishes a monthly online safety newsletter,CALLBACK, which periodically features a segment called “What Would YouHave Done?” These segments offer readers a chance to “interact” withinformation from …

Themes Related To Work Induced Fatigue And Burnout Among Certified Flight Instructors, Md Mijanur Rahman, Nicoletta Fala, David Reenders

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

In the flight training environment, Certified Flight Instructors (CFI) experienceinconsistent schedules, long hours at the airport, and limited organizationalsupport in their roles. These factors can contribute to fatigue and burnout whichcan also impact Flight Students. This study explores such experiences of CFIs andflight students through semi structured focus groups across three collegiate flightschools. Analysis of these focus group transcripts revealed five themes:organizational issues, financial pressures, fatigue, burnout, and trainingeffectiveness. Our findings identified how systemic stressors, like rigidscheduling, financial stress, and lack of career infrastructure, degrade the CFIs’wellbeing which leads to compromised training quality and flight safety. Small Changes, Big Returns: Decision-Making And Progress Towards Equitable Service Delivery, Kourtney Blackburn, Christina Hillman

Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications

Lavery Library is the sole library for St. John Fisher University and its five schools. The university is located in a small suburb in western New York State. Over the past decade we experienced many transformational changes. Some of these changes include our parent institution’s designation moving from college to university and the expansion of hybrid and online programs. The program expansions, combined with exploring textbook borrowing and changes to library services post-Covid, propelled the library staff to reimagine Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services for distance patrons. From our first online program policies in 2012 to the present day, this chapter …

A Cross-Cultural Analysis Of Violence Prevention Programs In Central Asia And The U.S. Education Systems, Nilufar Bobjonova

Graduate Research Papers

The rise of youth violence and aggressive behavior has become a significant public health concern, affecting individuals on multiple levels, including physical, economic, social, and psychological well-being. Given the national attention this issue has received in the United States, various prevention programs have been designed to equip children with essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes to minimize their involvement in violent activities (Higgerson et al., 2008). Preventing violence through structured programs is essential for creating safe and supportive educational environments. Schools serve as an ideal platform for implementing these initiatives, as they provide a consistent setting for teaching young individuals critical …

Taking It To The Limit: Curricular Responses To Credit Hour Caps In Music Teacher Education Programs, Phillip D. Payne, Edward C. Hoffman Iii, Aaron T. Wacker, Ashley D. Allen

Research & Issues in Music Education

As tuition rates continue to rise, credit hours required for degree completion emerges as a primary topic of concern. Undergraduate music education programs (or degrees) typically require a high number of credit hours which may also necessitate student class overloads, summer coursework, and/or program completion that could exceed the expected term of four years. To better understand the extent of current degree requirements and offerings, we examined credit allocation practices at 100 randomly selected NASM institutions. Specifically, we focused on emerging trends, commonalities, and potential insights to better guide policymakers when addressing legislative mandates focused on credit hour caps. Findings …

A Cross Attention Approach To Diagnostic Explainability Using Clinical Practice Guidelines For Depression, Sumit Dalal, Deepa Tilwani, Manas Gaur, Sarika Jain, Valerie L. Shalin, Amit P. Sheth

Psychology Faculty Publications

The lack of explainability in using relevant clinical knowledge hinders the adoption of artificial intelligence-powered analysis of unstructured clinical dialogue. A wealth of relevant, untapped Mental Health (MH) data is available in online communities, providing the opportunity to address the explainability problem with substantial potential impact as a screening tool for both online and offline applications. Inspired by how clinicians rely on their expertise when interacting with patients, we leverage relevant clinical knowledge to classify and explain depression-related data, reducing manual review time and engendering trust. We developed a method to enhance attention in contemporary transformer models and generate explanations …

Social Work Faculty Publications

Multiple sclerosis (MS) affects more than two million people worldwide. Providing care for MS patients differs from providing care for other illnesses due to the early onset of the disease, a varying illness progression, and because MS patients are predominantly female. This qualitative research study applied Pearlin’s Stress Process Model (SPM) to explore MS caregiving in a homogeneous group of caregiver/patient dyads. Qualitative interviews were conducted with both MS patients and their caregivers utilizing grounded theory to explore the MS caregiving phenomenon. Pearlin’s SPM was used to evaluate the qualitative data, which provided insight into the gendered nature of the …
