Understanding The Perplexing Nature Of Focus, Alessandra Martire Jan 2025

Understanding The Perplexing Nature Of Focus, Alessandra Martire

Hare & Bell Writing Contest

Focus does not seem to be that complex—that is, the comprehension of focus does not seem to be that complex. Anybody knows that focus itself determines the outcomes of many experiences, but what does deeply understanding focus have to do with using it? A certain individual thought the same thing prior to obtaining this understanding. She read the books, watched the TED Talks, and for the most part took the advice that was given to her—advice that promised improved focus and attention. Yet it seemed that nothing was happening. She still veered away from the task at hand each time …

It is common for inpatient medical floor RNs to care for an average of 5-7 patients per assignment plus the role of charge RN or preceptor, which borders the legal limit in the state of Connecticut. We believe that by eliminating an assignment for charge RN’s, safe staffing ratios can be achieved, and RN higher retention rates could be achieved with a strategic PICO investigation.

A Radioactive Circuit Split: Addressing Nuclear Waste Storage And Disposal In The United States, Madison King Jan 2025

A Radioactive Circuit Split: Addressing Nuclear Waste Storage And Disposal In The United States, Madison King

Kentucky Journal of Equine, Agriculture, & Natural Resources Law

In this note, Madison King analyzes the emerging circuit split concerning the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC) authority to license interim, away-from-reactor nuclear waste storage facilities. King explains that while the D.C. and Tenth Circuits have upheld the NRC’s authority under the Atomic Energy Act, the Fifth Circuit recently rejected that interpretation, ruling the NRC lacks such authority and invoking the major questions doctrine. King argues for a legislative solution to resolve the legal uncertainty and long-standing stalemate over nuclear waste disposal. King proposes that Congress should pass the Nuclear Waste Task Force Act to reevaluate federal policy, eliminate exemptions for …

Puppy Dog Eyes: Begging For Treats And The Regulation Of Dog Breeding, Abigail Barford Jan 2025

Puppy Dog Eyes: Begging For Treats And The Regulation Of Dog Breeding, Abigail Barford

Kentucky Journal of Equine, Agriculture, & Natural Resources Law

In this note, Abigail Barford explores the lack of regulation over dog breeding in Kentucky, particularly the harms caused by puppy mills and backyard breeders. Barford explains that loopholes in the Animal Welfare Act and Kentucky’s absence of state-level protections contribute to dog overpopulation, inhumane conditions, environmental damage, and financial burdens on taxpayers. Barford argues for Kentucky to adopt strong breeding regulations modeled on Pennsylvania’s laws and its own equine breeding system. She proposes statewide legislation to license breeders, enforce humane standards of care, and regulate small-scale breeding to curb overpopulation and protect animal welfare.

Appraisal And Acquisition Strategies In Collecting Repositories, Maureen Cresci Callahan, David Staniunas Jan 2025

Appraisal And Acquisition Strategies In Collecting Repositories, Maureen Cresci Callahan, David Staniunas

Published Works

This chapter explores the principles, values, and practices that shape intentional collecting and acquisitions work in archival repositories. The authors argue that acquisitions are a form of public service, requiring archivists to engage actively and responsibly with communities to diversify the historical record and counteract the biases of passive or unexamined collecting. Drawing on case studies from institutions such as Northeastern University, the Minnesota Historical Society, and the New York State Archives, the chapter outlines models and strategies for building trust with donors, navigating power dynamics, and aligning acquisitions with institutional mission and capacity. Topics include advisory boards, documentation strategy, …

Understanding Students' Decision To Proceed With Hybrid Education: Examining The Post-Covid-19 Scenario, Heng Zhang Jan 2025

Understanding Students' Decision To Proceed With Hybrid Education: Examining The Post-Covid-19 Scenario, Heng Zhang

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Hybrid education—integrating online and in-person instruction—has become a prominent educational model in the post-COVID-19 educational landscape. While prior research has examined the benefits and challenges of hybrid learning, as well as general acceptance patterns through frameworks such as the technology acceptance model and the theory of planned behavior, critical gaps remain in identifying the factors shaping students’ behavioral intentions toward this educational model. This study addresses these gaps by analyzing the interplay of external variables (such as prior hybrid learning experience, employment status, course type, commute time, and work-family balance) and socio-demographic attributes (such as age, gender, academic program and …

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2025

(HRV) is a biological phenomenon that refers to the variations in the time intervals between heartbeats and is commonly used to assess vascular health. Heart rate variability (HRV) indicates the heart’s capacity to respond to stimuli from the autonomic nervous system. High HRV has been known to be correlated with a healthy heart and autonomic nervous system, while low HRV has been known to be correlated with adverse physiological conditions [6]. While previous research has explored the cardiovascular effects of fasting and food intake, the impact of the post-fast meal on cardiovascular health remains understudied. This study aims to investigate …

Stress, Resilience, And Suicidal Ideation In Autistic Young Adults, Cole Murphy, Jared Nielsen Jan 2025

Stress, Resilience, And Suicidal Ideation In Autistic Young Adults, Cole Murphy, Jared Nielsen

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2025

Autistic young adults face a higher risk of suicide than their neurotypical peers due to the stress associated with potential difficulties with social interactions. It is known that stress may increase suicidal ideation, and that resilience may decrease it, but this study investigates the specific relationship between stress, resilience, and suicidal ideation in autistic young adults.

Invasive Species And Water Loss: Automating The Study Of Phragmites In Utah Wetlands, Alexander Atkinson, Dr. Rachel Wood Jan 2025

Invasive Species And Water Loss: Automating The Study Of Phragmites In Utah Wetlands, Alexander Atkinson, Dr. Rachel Wood

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2025

Phragmites australis is an invasive reed threatening Utah wetlands by not only outcompeting native flora and disrupting ecological system but also potentially increasing evapotranspiration (ET), the combined process of evaporation and plant transpiration. Increased ET may accelerate water loss in the already shrinking Great Salt Lake (GSL), exacerbating ecological and economic consequences.

To address this, we are developing an automated R-based data analysis pipeline to analyze Utah Geological Survey (UGS) data at the GSL Phragmites site, and to validate evapotranspiration measurements with satellite estimates from OpenET. By making the data and analyses easily accessible, we can better understand and mitigate …

Introduction

  • Background: Following a TSA, patients achieve pain relief, restoration of range of motion, improvements in patient-reported outcomes, and report overall satisfaction with their replaced shoulder3-5
  • Purpose: To examine Scapulothoracic (ST) kinematics on self-reported shoulder function outcomes
  • Hypothesis: There will be a statistically significant correlation between ST kinematics and self-reported satisfaction of function in participants who are more than one year post-a TSA

Methods

  • Participants: 14 subjects between 56-81 years old who underwent a TSA replacements at least one year ago by 1 of 3 orthopedic surgeons from one midwestern healthcare organization
