A "Mind"Ful Diet: Analyzing Nursing Education On The Mind Diet For Early-Onset Alzheimer's Disease, Audrey Marie Rafols

Nursing | Senior Theses

Early-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease (EOAD) is a rare form of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) that makes up around 5% of AD cases. The Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet, a hybrid diet of the Mediterranean and DASH (dietary approaches to stop hypertension) is an approach that patients with EOAD can adapt to slow down the progression of cognitive decline. Current literature focuses on what the effects of the diet are more for AD and not EOAD specifically, where there is less of an established baseline of nurse knowledge. The lack of research about what nurses understand regarding providing education of the …

Registry Systems As Gatekeepers: How Patent Registries Create Systemic Barriers To Innovation, Miriam Marcowitz-Bitton, Ori Sharon Jan 2025

Registry Systems As Gatekeepers: How Patent Registries Create Systemic Barriers To Innovation, Miriam Marcowitz-Bitton, Ori Sharon

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

Picture an inventor. Anyone at all. We bet you imagined a man, is that right? If you did, that’s not surprising—our study of over 140,000 patent applications reveals that three out of four patents name all-male inventors, and only three percent of patents represent the inventions of women-only teams. But this massive gender gap is not just about who chooses to invent—it’s about who gets to protect their innovations through the patent system.

This Article presents groundbreaking evidence that women face systemic barriers in securing patents, even when they clear the hurdles to become inventors. Drawing on an unprecedented dataset …

Mutations In The Mmp20 Gene In Association With Amelogenesis Imperfecta, Elaine Vanterpool, Alicia Broomfield-Myrie Jan 2025

Mutations In The Mmp20 Gene In Association With Amelogenesis Imperfecta, Elaine Vanterpool, Alicia Broomfield-Myrie

Student Posters

Enamel, the hardest substance in the body, protects the teeth from various forces like temperature and physical factors that would cause damage. Depending on the kind of AI one has developed, the phenotypes can range from thin teeth to teeth discoloration or decay. MMP20, a gene commonly associated with AI, encodes for Enamelysin, a protein crucial for enamel formation. It is also known as matrix metallopeptidase 20. It becomes active when it is cleaved by cellular proteases. When this gene is mutated, the splicing pattern is altered. Consequently, this can cause disease. This study was developed to analyze the pathogenicity …

Preventing Pregnancy: Dante And Medieval Culture, Anne C. Leone Jan 2025

Preventing Pregnancy: Dante And Medieval Culture, Anne C. Leone

Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics - All Scholarship

This article provides an overview of the dominant views expressed in legal, medical and religious/theological traditions in the late Middle Ages in order to illustrate two basic points: 1) that the “historical precedent” with regard to abortive practices in the medieval Christian West was less homogenous and more diverse than the Supreme Court Justices assumed in their opinion delivered in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022); and 2) that – in stark contrast with what many anti-abortion activists today might assume about the historical precedent, – medieval thinkers did not generally believe that human life begins at conception.

Another Kind Of First Year Experience: A Narrative Inquiry Of The Experiences Of International Students' Transition In The First Year, Arezou K. Soto

Dissertations of Practice

International students are integral to campus communities. Understanding the experiences that international students have as they adjust in their first year can benefit institutions in providing proper support. This study explored international graduate students’ narratives as they transition in their new environment and adjust to life at a mid-size, public institution in the Midwest in their first year. It also looked at the strategies that international graduate students utilize in their transition in their first year as well as how they perceive the support provided to them by the institution. Schlossberg’s Transition Theory guided this narrative inquiry study. Four themes …

The Cdk8 Kinase Module: A Novel Player In The Transcription Of Translation Initiation And Ribosomal Genes, Brittany Friedson, Stephen D Willis, Natalia Shcherbik, Alicia N Campbell, Katrina F Cooper

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

Survival following stress is dependent upon reprogramming transcription and translation. Communication between these programs following stress is critical for adaptation but is not clearly understood. The Cdk8 kinase module (CKM) of the Mediator complex modulates the transcriptional response to various stresses. Its involvement in regulating translational machinery has yet to be elucidated, highlighting an existing gap in knowledge. Here, we report that the CKM positively regulates a subset of ribosomal protein (RP) and translation initiation factor (TIF)-encoding genes under physiological conditions in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In mouse embryonic fibroblasts and HCT116 cells, the CKM regulates unique sets of RP and TIF …

School Mental Health Partnerships: A Case Study, Rebecca Bilski

Theses and Dissertations

Education in the United States continues to evolve in response to technological advancements, such as the widespread use of the iPhone, and societal changes in a post-COVID-19 world. Youth mental health challenges are at an all-time high, impacting students’ ability to succeed academically and socially (CDC, 2023). Schools are in a unique position to address these challenges, yet untreated or unidentified mental health issues can hinder students’ progress (Sanchez et al., 2018). This study examines the potential of school mental health partnerships to provide educators with the tools, training, and resources necessary to support students with diverse and complex mental …

The Science Or Art Of Teaching Reading: Literacy Educators’ Professional Identity In The Wake Of The Accountability Era, Christine M. Haight

Theses and Dissertations

The present study explored literacy educators’ levels of curriculum autonomy, teaching self-efficacy, collegiality, collaboration, differentiation of instruction, and adaptive teaching with respect to school district socio-economic status, degree status, curriculum delivery mode, curriculum used most often, and career stage. The present study also examined the extent to which curriculum autonomy, teaching self-efficacy, collegiality, and collaboration predicted literacy educators’ differentiation of instruction and/or adaptive teaching after accounting for statistically significant background variables (demographic or curricular). Levels of curriculum autonomy, teaching self-efficacy, collegiality and collaboration were explored as characteristics associated with teacher professional identity. Levels of differentiation of instruction and adaptive teaching …

The Effects Of Single-Gender Private Parochial School Education On Performance In Stem Coursework, Adam Jacob Rappoport Jan 2025

The Effects Of Single-Gender Private Parochial School Education On Performance In Stem Coursework, Adam Jacob Rappoport

Theses and Dissertations

Traditionally, women do not enter STEM fields as often as men. Stereotype threat could be one of the causes behind this. This study sought to examine the effects on classroom climate, self-efficacy, and performance on girls in single gender and mixed gender private parochial school settings. Eight schools were chosen, four schools with mixed gender classes and four with single gender classes. The target population were secondary school seniors currently in a STEM course. Surveys were distributed to these schools (N=222 from the mixed gender schools, N=25 from the single gender schools). The questions were answered by students using a …

It’S Complex: Teacher Praxis And Critical Pedagogies, Annmarie Dull

Theses and Dissertations

This feminist, critical research uses a bricolage of case study, principles of phenomenology, and autoethnography to examine teachers’ and researchers’ praxis with engaging in critical pedagogies. Through a case study with principles of phenomenology, this research examines two public school kindergarten teachers’ experiences with using critical pedagogies—namely culturally responsive teaching and social justice education—in their classrooms, and offers portraits of their praxis. Through the autoethnography, this research examines the researcher’s experiences with engaging in a critical feminist research with friends-as-participants, and shares reflections on ways to examine and share examples of teacher praxis with engaging in different approaches to critical …

Emotional Flooding: Examining Associations With Family Of Origin Violence And The Mediating Role Of Attentional Bias To Threat, Rachel Zukerman Jan 2025

Emotional Flooding: Examining Associations With Family Of Origin Violence And The Mediating Role Of Attentional Bias To Threat, Rachel Zukerman

Theses and Dissertations

Emotional flooding, or the experience of partner negative affect as intensely disorganizing and overwhelming, has recently emerged as an important variable in predicting maladaptive relationship behaviors, including intimate partner violence (IPV). However, not much is known about risk factors for flooding beyond qualities of the interpersonal interaction. While flooding depends on the experience of intense partner negative emotion, some individuals may vary regarding their propensities to feel flooded in a relatively stable way, and therefore may be more likely to engage in destructive relationship behaviors. Theory and research suggest that family violence negatively impacts emotional processing by increasing emotional arousal …

Testing Mediation Models Of Antisocial Behavior In The Context Of Parental Criminal Justice System Involvement, David Alfonso Tio Jan 2025

Testing Mediation Models Of Antisocial Behavior In The Context Of Parental Criminal Justice System Involvement, David Alfonso Tio

Theses and Dissertations

Parental criminal justice system involvement (CJSI) affects a significant portion of our children in a multitude of ways, including increasing the child’s risk for developing antisocial behaviors and, in doing so, perpetuating the intergenerational cycle of criminal offending that uniquely and unjustly afflicts marginalized communities of color and leaves behind what many have termed the ‘hidden victims’ of CJSI. This dissertation aimed to answer two research questions: 1. Does the division into two categories, the aggression, and rule breaking dimensions, provide a superior fitting model than the more commonly used unidimensional measure?; 2. Is it more accurate to model the …

Evolution Of Chitinases In Amphibians: A Multi-Faceted Group Of Enzymes With Dual Function In Digestion And At The Forefront Against Fungal Infections, Devashri Narayan

Theses and Dissertations

Chitinases are essential enzymes found in living organisms such as amphibians, and they ensure that amphibians survive in their varied ecosystems. They are crucial in the digestion and immunity of most organisms, including plants and animals. Chitinases’ diversity of functions is a testament to their evolutionary adaptability. The primary function of chitinases is the breakdown of chitin, a complex polymer of saccharides often found in the exoskeleton of insects and the walls of fungi. Amphibians that feed on insects make use of chitinases to hydrolyze chitin into simpler sugars that can be easily absorbed to extract the necessary nutrients from …

How Technology Overuse Is Affecting Youth’S Physical Activity Time, Amiya Prema Sikidar Jan 2025

How Technology Overuse Is Affecting Youth’S Physical Activity Time, Amiya Prema Sikidar

Theses and Dissertations

Prior research demonstrates how time and energy dedicated to screens is negatively correlated with physical activity time (Alotaibi et al., 2020; Scaranni et al., 2023; Barot et al., 2023; Parasuraman et al., 2017). Therefore, in this research study, we aimed to investigate if time dedicated to screens is still replacing participation in physical activities or if technology has become so integrated in our lives over time that it no longer affects our physical activity time. We tested this via an online survey of 62 students (38 females, 24 males) at St. John’s University. Participants completed an internet addiction questionnaire (M=46.66, …
