No. 87: Mythologies Of Mixed Migration And The Southern Route, Jonathan Crush, Zack Ahmed
Southern African Migration Programme
In Africa, various international organizations have promoted “mixed migration” as a new governance challenge requiring innovative policy responses. The narrative, which has been repurposed from discussions on African migration to Europe to include intra-African movements, positions migration flows as primarily irregular, organized and driven by smugglers, and requiring tight control by states. This report shows that textual and cartographic representations of the so-called Southern Route are a form of cartopolitics, constructing migration as a permanent flow of irregular migrants from a singular origin toward a common destination. By portraying migration as solely a function of smuggling and coercion, the Southern …

This essay was originally published in Balkinization as part of an online symposium and it is reprinted with permission. The essay engages with Julie Suk's book, After Misogyny: How the Law Fails Women and What to Do About It. It suggests that feminist legal scholars have been considering their intellectual options in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. In After Misogyny, Professor Suk offers a conceptual path forward in a post-Dobbs world. Suk’s trenchant analysis of the failure of law to render substantive gender equality and her …
Associations Between Observance Of Orthodox Jewish Mourning Rituals And The Psychological Processes Of Meaning Making And Religious Coping Following Loss: A Quantitative Study, Kayla Reich M.S.
Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-
While grief is a deeply individualized experience, research suggests that some coping mechanisms—such as meaning making—promote healthier psychological adjustment. Jewish mourning rituals may support meaning making, yet few studies have quantitatively examined this relationship. The present study investigated the association between observance of early Jewish mourning stages (i.e., aninut, levayah, and shiva) and both meaning making and adaptive religious coping. A sample of 60 Orthodox Jewish adults who had experienced the loss of a first-degree relative between one and five years prior to the start of the study completed measures of mourning observance, meaning making, and Jewish religious coping. Results …

One Horse Power: The Environmental Consequences Of Horseback Riding Trails In Protected Areas And National Parks, Briana Kupic
Hospitality Graduate Student Scholarship
Horseback riding is one of the traditional forms of recreation in national parks and protected areas, and can give visitors a special chance to explore these beautiful natural areas from a different perspective. However, the activity has raised concerns for its perceived effects on the environment. This paper synthesizes and reviews secondary literature on the environmental effects of horseback riding, and identifies four broad themes: disturbance to wildlife, degradation of water quality, loss of vegetation, and soil erosion. The evidence indicates that equines have the potential to inflict far greater trail damage and ecological impact than other trail participants, including …

Tap, Allow, Regret: A Study Of User Awareness In Android App Permissions, Yannick Kouaho
Computer Science Student Publications
As mobile applications increasingly demand access to user data, the Android permission system has evolved to provide finer control. Despite this, users often approve permissions without full comprehension, risking privacy. This study investigates how Android users perceive and respond to permission requests, combining a structured survey (n=30) with review mining of Google Play Store feedback. Results reveal low confidence in understanding permissions, high uninstall rates for over-permissioned apps, and a dominant perception that categories like social media and games frequently request unnecessary access. We introduce the “regret framework” to describe how users react after realizing the mismatch between expectations and …

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology
During aerobic growth, S. aureus relies on acetate overflow metabolism, a process where glucose is incompletely oxidized to acetate, for its bioenergetic needs. Acetate is not immediately captured as a carbon source and is excreted as waste by cells. The underlying factors governing acetate overflow in S. aureus have not been identified. Here, we show that acetate overflow is favored due to a thermodynamic bottleneck in the TCA cycle specifically involving the oxidation of succinate to fumarate by succinate dehydrogenase. This bottleneck reduces flux through the TCA cycle, making it more efficient for S. aureus to generate ATP via acetate …

The Impact Of Coral Degradation On Coastal Communities In Southeast Asia, Paige Smith
The Impact Of Coral Degradation On Coastal Communities In Southeast Asia, Paige Smith
Ballard Brief
Coral reefs across the globe are in decline, but reefs in Southeast Asia are among some of the most threatened in the world. Climate change, triggered by fossil fuel emissions, raises sea water temperatures and lowers the ocean’s pH, contributing to coral bleaching and inhibiting coral growth. Local threats also particularly affect reefs in Southeast Asia, such as destructive fishing techniques and marine and inland sources of pollution. Coastal communities in Southeast Asia are especially vulnerable to the degradation of coral reefs due to economic reliance on these reefs and their proximity to them. Declining coral reefs can damage the …
Lack Of Integration Between Western Medicine And Complementary And Alternative Medicine (Cam) For Treating Adults In America, Kaylee Burrill
Lack Of Integration Between Western Medicine And Complementary And Alternative Medicine (Cam) For Treating Adults In America, Kaylee Burrill
Ballard Brief
There is a lack of integration between Western Medicine and Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) for treating adults in America. Communication barriers, differing approaches to healthcare, and skepticism coupled with a lack of education prevent integration. As a result, patients suffer financial burdens, are unsatisfied with incomplete and insufficient care, and the US healthcare system becomes more fragmented. Integrative medicine provides a holistic, patient centered, evidence-based solution by combining the safest and most effective practices of Western medicine and CAM in a coordinated way. Child Malnutrition In Argentina, Brooklyn Richins
Child Malnutrition In Argentina, Brooklyn Richins
Ballard Brief
Children in Argentina are experiencing an increase in child malnutrition rates. These children are at a higher risk for such conditions due to the lower levels of income and education, as well as the harsh climate and geographic isolation, resulting in a greater reliance on highly-processed imported foods. Malnutrition in childhood results in negative health outcomes throughout one’s life, as well as lower academic achievement. Additionally, this increases the likelihood of their children experiencing malnutrition, thus continuing the cycle. Currently, efforts to mitigate child malnutrition are focused on providing mothers with education on nutrition, supplying children with supplements, and connecting …
Inadequate Healthcare In Pacific Islands, Brook Vaitohi
Inadequate Healthcare In Pacific Islands, Brook Vaitohi
Ballard Brief
The high prevalence of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), vulnerability to communicable diseases, and limited access to healthcare in rural areas pressure healthcare systems in Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs). Due to healthcare worker shortages, resource deficits, and economic constraints, the quality of PICT healthcare systems is considered insufficient concerning key criteria for adequate healthcare, namely effectiveness, accessibility, and safety. This inadequacy leads to both higher mortality and morbidity, contributing to preventable deaths, delayed diagnoses, ineffective treatments, and poor management of disease for Pacific Islanders. While PICTs have recognized the inadequacy of their healthcare systems, treatment gaps persist and prevent progress.
Integration Of Agile Approach Into The Implementation Of The Iso/Sae 21434 On Top Of The V-Model To Enable Continuous Secure-By-Design Automotive Cybersecurity Development, Pooja Patil
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The rapid evolution of technology is revolutionizing the automotive industry, with connected and autonomous vehicles at the forefront. These vehicles rely on complex digital ecosystems to enhance safety and efficiency but are increasingly vulnerable to cybersecurity threats. Addressing these challenges requires following robust development methodologies, while complying with cybersecurity standards. This study introduces a framework that merges the widely used agile methodology practices with the ISO/SAE 21434 standard to support secure-by-design automotive product development. Traditional development approaches like the V-model provide structured and linear project phases, but they often lack the flexibility and the ability to adapt to evolving security …

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) as defined by Drs. Felitti and Anda are prevalent in the general population of the United States. These childhood traumas have a profound and lasting impact on emotional, psychological, and social development, often disrupting academic trajectories and life outcomes. This qualitative phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of six college graduates in a suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota, who endured high levels of ACEs yet succeeded in overcoming adversity to achieve academic and personal success. Guided by Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory and resilience theory (Garmezy & Streitman, 1974), semi-structured interviews were conducted to examine the effects of …

The Use Of Platelet-Rich Fibrin In Maintaining Vascularity For Intentionally Replanted Teeth: A Randomized Clinical Trial, Elizabeth L. Easley-Perez, Joseph B. Bavitz, Lynette M. Smith, Peter J. Giannini
Journal Articles: College of Dentistry
Background: A primary goal for a mature tooth autotransplant is preserving tooth vitality. Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) has characteristics that may improve the success of autotransplanted mature teeth by decreasing harmful inflammation and boosting vascular growth. This prospective human trial aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of PRF on vitality in a mature tooth replantation model. Methods: This double-blind, randomized controlled trial included 18 participants with 70 single-rooted vital teeth planned for prosthetic extraction. Experimental teeth were extracted and apicoectomized to increase vascular growth. PRF was condensed into the canals before teeth were replanted in their respective sockets. In the same patient, …

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
The development of new DNA sequencing techniques has led to new discoveries on the gut microbiome’s critical influence on metabolic processes and immune development. Therefore, understanding the most influential factors in the development of the gut microbiome during early infancy, which impacts the individual’s long-term health, is vital. This paper explores how environmental factors, including delivery method and nutrition, shape the gut microbiome’s devel- opment in early life. In addition, it discusses their long-term health implications. The paper highlights how the mode of delivery significantly affects initial microbial colonization. Vaginal births promote a microbial community that is rich in beneficial …
