Reproductive Costs In Female, Island-Dwelling Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes (Crotalus Adamanteus), Emily R. Gray Jan 2025

Reproductive Costs In Female, Island-Dwelling Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes (Crotalus Adamanteus), Emily R. Gray

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes (Crotalus adamanteus; EDBs) are a declining species endemic to the Southeastern Coastal Plain. Reproduction is costly for females, which are ovoviviparous, slow to mature, reproduce infrequently, and are often emaciated after parturition. Yet, we have a limited understanding of the trade-offs associated with their reproductive biology. Thus, I had three objectives: 1) assess reproduction-associated water stress and determine how female EDBs respond to altered water budgets in situ (Chapter 1), 2) evaluate the interactive effects of body condition and rainfall on female hydration, with a special focus on musculature as a condition index (Chapter 1), …

A Localized Strategy To Boost Public Opinion And Increase Community Support For Rural Public Education By Understanding Parental Motivations For School Choice, Stephanie Marie Lambrecht Jan 2025

A Localized Strategy To Boost Public Opinion And Increase Community Support For Rural Public Education By Understanding Parental Motivations For School Choice, Stephanie Marie Lambrecht

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Families and educators understand school choice as a broad concept, however its implications for rural public education in Virginia are less frequently considered. In rural areas, school choice has a disproportionate impact due to funding formulas and the effects of average daily membership (ADM) on school budgets. While there is a great deal of research on school choice, the rationale behind families’ decisions varies depending on the cultural and material resources of their community. It is vital to consider the regional and cultural context when developing strategies to support rural public schools. By analyzing motivations and factors which influence school …

Does Holding Healthcare Providers Accountable For Every Mistake Improve Patient Safety, Or Does It Hinder Open Reporting And Learning?, Amir Arshia Emam Jomeh, Eleanor Roy Jan 2025

Does Holding Healthcare Providers Accountable For Every Mistake Improve Patient Safety, Or Does It Hinder Open Reporting And Learning?, Amir Arshia Emam Jomeh, Eleanor Roy

Journal of Health Ethics

Medical errors are a major cause of death and harm in healthcare, yet most go unreported due to fear of punishment. This essay explores whether holding healthcare workers fully accountable for every mistake improves safety or creates a harmful blame culture. Using the case of Dr. Hadiza Bawa-Garba, it shows how individual punishment can overlook deeper system failures, such as staff shortages and poor communication. The essay compares this with Denmark’s non-punitive reporting system, which encourages healthcare professionals to report errors without fear, leading to real improvements in patient safety. Blame cultures, on the other hand, discourage openness and violate …

Who Should Be Held Accountable In Technology-Induced Medical Errors? Evaluating The Roles Of Healthcare Providers, Technology Developers, And Hospital Systems, Eleanor Roy, Amir Arshia Emam Jomeh Jan 2025

Who Should Be Held Accountable In Technology-Induced Medical Errors? Evaluating The Roles Of Healthcare Providers, Technology Developers, And Hospital Systems, Eleanor Roy, Amir Arshia Emam Jomeh

Journal of Health Ethics

The integration of technologies such as artificial intelligence, electronic health records, and automated diagnostic systems has significantly altered clinical practice. While these tools enhance efficiency and diagnostic accuracy, they have also introduced new forms of medical error, raising complex questions about responsibility. This article examines the ethical dimensions of accountability in technology-induced harm by evaluating the roles of healthcare providers, technology developers, and hospital systems. Drawing on the four pillars of medical ethics; autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice, it explores the overlapping responsibilities of each stakeholder and the challenges that arise when harm occurs. Through analysis of the Therac-25 radiation …

Capacity Determination And False Beliefs: A Case Study On The Application Of Evaluation Frameworks With Resulting Recommendations, Dessislava S. Fessenko Jan 2025

Capacity Determination And False Beliefs: A Case Study On The Application Of Evaluation Frameworks With Resulting Recommendations, Dessislava S. Fessenko

Journal of Health Ethics

False beliefs may interfere with medical decision-making by casting doubt about the patient’s decision-making capacity. The latter is typically assessed against a set of established criteria requiring the patient’s cognitive aptness for self-governance. I argue that a capacity determination solely based on these criteria may prove insufficient when the patient entertains false beliefs. I further illustrate how alternative evaluation frameworks are better suited to assess the impact of false beliefs on the patient’s state of mind, values, overall worldviews and pursuit of wellbeing, and therefore, for the actual moral significance of false beliefs. It appears prudent to integrate these alternative …

The Impact Of Medical Ethics On Healthcare Professionals And Patient Outcomes In Resource-Poor Settings: A Focus On Ethical Challenges And Solutions, Amir Arshia Emam Jomeh, Eleanor Roy Jan 2025

The Impact Of Medical Ethics On Healthcare Professionals And Patient Outcomes In Resource-Poor Settings: A Focus On Ethical Challenges And Solutions, Amir Arshia Emam Jomeh, Eleanor Roy

Journal of Health Ethics

Background: Developing countries face major challenges to their healthcare system such as resource scarcity and reduced patient autonomy amongst women. The strained healthcare system often leads doctors to compromise ethical protocols and reduce their standard of care.

Aims: To explain why medical ethics are important for healthcare professionals in the context of resource-poor countries.

Findings: Many healthcare professionals lack adequate knowledge of medical ethics in developing countries. In addition, doctors make difficult decisions such as patient prioritization and resource allocation without clear ethical guidance or protocols. Women also face diminished patient autonomy in developing countries, which has been linked to …

Should Medical Assisted Suicide Be Legalised Worldwide? A Critical Examination Of Ethical Justifications And Challenges In Contemporary Healthcare, Eleanor Roy, Amir Arshia Emam Jomeh Jan 2025

Should Medical Assisted Suicide Be Legalised Worldwide? A Critical Examination Of Ethical Justifications And Challenges In Contemporary Healthcare, Eleanor Roy, Amir Arshia Emam Jomeh

Journal of Health Ethics

The legalisation of medical assisted suicide (MAS) is a complex ethical issue at the intersection of autonomy, non-maleficence, and justice. This paper critically examines whether MAS should be legalised worldwide, evaluating ethical justifications, regulatory challenges, and societal risks. A primary argument in favour of MAS is patient autonomy, allowing individuals to make informed end-of-life decisions, particularly in cases of terminal illness and intractable suffering. MAS is also framed as a harm-reduction strategy, preventing patients from resorting to unsafe methods of suicide.

However, ethical concerns regarding coercion, socioeconomic disparities, and the "slippery slope" effect present significant opposition. Case studies from jurisdictions …

The Ethical Justification Of Application Of Long-Acting Reversible Contraception In Patients With Intellectual Disabilities, Kelly Savitri Jan 2025

The Ethical Justification Of Application Of Long-Acting Reversible Contraception In Patients With Intellectual Disabilities, Kelly Savitri

Journal of Health Ethics

This paper explores the ethical justification for the use of Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) in patients with intellectual disabilities, particularly in scenarios where patients cannot provide informed consent. The tension between respecting autonomy and ensuring beneficence presents a complex challenge for healthcare providers. Drawing on historical context, current reproductive justice issues, and evolving societal attitudes towards individuals with intellectual disabilities, this essay argues for a semi-discrete model that recognizes the need to prioritize patient health and safety while valuing their autonomy. By examining the implications of both past and present practices, this study highlights the necessity for healthcare providers to …

California Dreamin’: Industrialization, The Progressive Movement, And The Americanization Of The Russian Molokans, Ryan Cutillo Jan 2025

California Dreamin’: Industrialization, The Progressive Movement, And The Americanization Of The Russian Molokans, Ryan Cutillo

Undergraduate History Papers (non-capstone)

At the dawn of the twentieth century, a wave of Russian Molokan immigrants arrived in Southern California, bringing with them dreams of religious freedom, agrarian simplicity, and communal self-determination. What they encountered instead was a complex web of industrial ambition, Progressive idealism, and American social engineering. This paper traces the Molokans’ journey from the Caucasus to the barrios of Boyle Heights and the fields of Baja California, highlighting the often-overlooked intersections between philanthropy and profiteering, altruism and assimilation. Figures such as Rev. Dana Bartlett, C.P. de Blumenthal, and Peter A. Demens emerge not only as benefactors but as agents in …

“You Shall Be As Gods”: Xenogears, Gnosticism, And Gaming On The Mystical Marketplace At The Turn Of The Millennium, Alexander Sutton Jan 2025

“You Shall Be As Gods”: Xenogears, Gnosticism, And Gaming On The Mystical Marketplace At The Turn Of The Millennium, Alexander Sutton

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis explores the role of Christian Gnosticism in the Japanese role-playing video game (JRPG) Xenogears, developed by Square Co. Ltd. and released in Japan and the United States in 1998. In tracing its historical context, development, and localization I argue that Xenogears is an important text in the history of mediated religion in global popular culture. In comparing the game’s narrative against ancient Christian Gnostic texts such as The Apocryphon of John, The Reality of the Rulers, and the Gospel of Judas, I show how the game harmonized, mediated, and reproduced ancient Gnostic mysticism for its players to emulate. …

An Evaluation Of Reinforcement Learning Algorithms In Video Game Development, Isaac Lockwood Jan 2025

An Evaluation Of Reinforcement Learning Algorithms In Video Game Development, Isaac Lockwood

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Reinforcement Learning (RL) has demonstrated substantial promise for creating adaptive, responsive AI in complex environments such as video games. Yet despite growing academic interest, industry adoption remains limited due to computational overhead, reward-design challenges, and unpredictable AI behaviors. This thesis investigates how RL algorithms—specifically Advantage Actor-Critic (A2C), Deep Q-Network (DQN), and Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO)—can be applied to three different genres of video games. Those being first-person shooter (fps), fighting, and strategy.

Through a combination of scenario-based experimentation and comprehensive analysis, this work explores the feasibility and design considerations crucial for integrating RL-driven AI into commercial games. Key factors examined …

A Review Of The Validity Of The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule 2, Keegan Cundiff Jan 2025

A Review Of The Validity Of The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule 2, Keegan Cundiff

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a multifaceted condition that affects individuals in unique ways. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC, 2020), people with ASD have a neurological disorder that impacts communication, social interaction, and behavior. One common ASD evaluation tool is the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule 2 (ADOS-2), which helps a clinician decide if the student exhibits social and communication skills expected of someone with or without ASD. Since ASD is a disorder for which symptoms need to be present within the early developmental period, it is common for schools and pediatricians to be initial sources of referral …

“I’M Anywhere In The Country That Has A National Park”: Seasonal National Park Service Employee Organizational Identification Targets, Rachel Taylor Jan 2025

“I’M Anywhere In The Country That Has A National Park”: Seasonal National Park Service Employee Organizational Identification Targets, Rachel Taylor

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Organizational Identification research is well established and explores the concept of individual oneness to a larger human collective yet often focuses on traditional types of work. Seasonal work carried out by National Park Service (NPS) employees is a non-traditional form of work entirely dependent on the organization's needs in a particular season, typically summer. Literature regarding seasonal work often focuses on types of hospitality organizations, rather than the NPS. This study sought to understand how the unique situation of seasonal workers may have influenced their identification with multiple organizational targets. Through qualitative interviews with 12 individuals who have been seasonal …

Labor And Environment Entwined: A Radical Green New Deal And Just Transition In Applachia, Anne Marie Lofaso, Nicholas F. Stump Jan 2025

Labor And Environment Entwined: A Radical Green New Deal And Just Transition In Applachia, Anne Marie Lofaso, Nicholas F. Stump

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

In this Article, Professor Lofaso and Professor Stump propose a genuinely transformative Green New Deal and Just Transition in Appalachia. The Article opens by tracing the long history of the Appalachian labor and environmental movements. Next, the Article interrogates the common contention that the Appalachian environmental and labor movements are opposed. While this contention has substantial truth, more complex forces have been at work in the region. Fossil fuel industry elites, for instance, have wielded exaggerated “jobs versus environment” rhetoric to maximize profits and quash emergent solidarities among local workers, residents, and activists.

This Article contends that a key solution …

No. 87: Mythologies Of Mixed Migration And The Southern Route, Jonathan Crush, Zack Ahmed Jan 2025

No. 87: Mythologies Of Mixed Migration And The Southern Route, Jonathan Crush, Zack Ahmed

Southern African Migration Programme

In Africa, various international organizations have promoted “mixed migration” as a new governance challenge requiring innovative policy responses. The narrative, which has been repurposed from discussions on African migration to Europe to include intra-African movements, positions migration flows as primarily irregular, organized and driven by smugglers, and requiring tight control by states. This report shows that textual and cartographic representations of the so-called Southern Route are a form of cartopolitics, constructing migration as a permanent flow of irregular migrants from a singular origin toward a common destination. By portraying migration as solely a function of smuggling and coercion, the Southern …

Pushing Boundaries, Paula A. Monopoli

Faculty Scholarship

This essay was originally published in Balkinization as part of an online symposium and it is reprinted with permission. The essay engages with Julie Suk's book, After Misogyny: How the Law Fails Women and What to Do About It. It suggests that feminist legal scholars have been considering their intellectual options in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. In After Misogyny, Professor Suk offers a conceptual path forward in a post-Dobbs world. Suk’s trenchant analysis of the failure of law to render substantive gender equality and her …

Associations Between Observance Of Orthodox Jewish Mourning Rituals And The Psychological Processes Of Meaning Making And Religious Coping Following Loss: A Quantitative Study, Kayla Reich M.S. Jan 2025

Associations Between Observance Of Orthodox Jewish Mourning Rituals And The Psychological Processes Of Meaning Making And Religious Coping Following Loss: A Quantitative Study, Kayla Reich M.S.

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

While grief is a deeply individualized experience, research suggests that some coping mechanisms—such as meaning making—promote healthier psychological adjustment. Jewish mourning rituals may support meaning making, yet few studies have quantitatively examined this relationship. The present study investigated the association between observance of early Jewish mourning stages (i.e., aninut, levayah, and shiva) and both meaning making and adaptive religious coping. A sample of 60 Orthodox Jewish adults who had experienced the loss of a first-degree relative between one and five years prior to the start of the study completed measures of mourning observance, meaning making, and Jewish religious coping. Results …

One Horse Power: The Environmental Consequences Of Horseback Riding Trails In Protected Areas And National Parks, Briana Kupic Jan 2025

One Horse Power: The Environmental Consequences Of Horseback Riding Trails In Protected Areas And National Parks, Briana Kupic

Hospitality Graduate Student Scholarship

Horseback riding is one of the traditional forms of recreation in national parks and protected areas, and can give visitors a special chance to explore these beautiful natural areas from a different perspective. However, the activity has raised concerns for its perceived effects on the environment. This paper synthesizes and reviews secondary literature on the environmental effects of horseback riding, and identifies four broad themes: disturbance to wildlife, degradation of water quality, loss of vegetation, and soil erosion. The evidence indicates that equines have the potential to inflict far greater trail damage and ecological impact than other trail participants, including …
