Black students in counseling programs face many challenges stemming from racial trauma and microaggression; for instance, they are at greater risk for mental health problems and degree incompletion. Grounded in critical race theory, the purpose of this quantitative correlation study was to examine whether racial trauma, the experience of microaggression, and cultural coping behaviors were significant predictors of resilience and whether cultural coping behaviors mediated the relationship between racial trauma, microaggression, and resilience among Black counseling students. A convenience sample was used to anonymously survey 80 Black counseling students. The results of the multiple regression mediation analysis showed a statistically …

Clinical Practice Guideline For Lifestyle Management Of Clients On Second Generation Antipsychotic Medications, Althea G. Andrade Jan 2025

Clinical Practice Guideline For Lifestyle Management Of Clients On Second Generation Antipsychotic Medications, Althea G. Andrade

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) are a category of medications principally employed for the treatment of certain mental illnesses. One major downside of the medications is their tendency to induce weight gain, which can result in negative metabolic consequences and raise the likelihood of cardiovascular disease. The clinic setting was focused on the mental health component for the patients on SGAs, and there was little time and ability to address physical health needs, such as weight gain, nutrition, and exercise, which led to comorbidities and possible exacerbation of the mental health issues. Therefore, the purpose of this doctor of nursing practice (DNP) …

Saying Hello Again Rather Than A Long Goodbye: A Novel Way Of Addressing Pre-Death Grief And Facilitating Continuing Bonds For Dementia Caregivers, Elizabeth Gilmour, Edith Steffen Jan 2025

Saying Hello Again Rather Than A Long Goodbye: A Novel Way Of Addressing Pre-Death Grief And Facilitating Continuing Bonds For Dementia Caregivers, Elizabeth Gilmour, Edith Steffen

School of Psychology

The ‘Hello Again’ letter-writing intervention is sometimes used in grief counselling to facilitate continuing bonds with the deceased. Family member caregivers of those with dementia often experience a ‘long goodbye’, as the relationship with their loved one gradually changes through serial losses before they have physically died, making the relationship markedly different than the one before the dementia. There are limited interventions to support caregivers with this pre-death grief. This study aimed to address this lack by offering the ‘Hello Again’ intervention to dementia family caregivers, exploring the perceived helpfulness of the task, and attempting to understand the meanings of …

Coming together in this conference collectivity, these are doctorates that in their doing – thinking, researching, writing, supervising, assessing, publishing – live by “no preexisting rules, processes, methods, categories or ‘determining judgement’.”1 They are doctorates that “cannot be taught or learned.”23 Such PhDs – thesis’ refusing to (con)form – in their ever probing, in-forming, stubborn curiousness of problematics living beyond solution driven research, lead to transformative moments in the act of learning, that in their difference are “...made sense of, not in terms of what [they] mean but in terms of what [they] do.”4Yet in their difference, doctorates working within …

Liver fibrosis is a critical liver disease that can progress to more severe manifestations, such as cirrhosis, yet no effective targeted therapies are available. Here, we identify that ATF4, a master transcription factor in ER stress response, promotes liver fibrosis by facilitating a stress response-independent epigenetic program in hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). Unlike its canonical role in regulating UPR genes during ER stress, ATF4 activates epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) gene transcription under fibrogenic conditions. HSC-specific depletion of ATF4 suppresses liver fibrosis in vivo. Mechanistically, TGFβ resets ATF4 to orchestrate a unique enhancer program for the transcriptional activation of pro-fibrotic EMT genes. …

Several empirical and theoretical studies suggest the presence of multiple enhancers per gene that collectively regulate gene expression, and that common sequence variation impacting on the activities of these enhancers is a major source of inter-individual gene expression variability. However, for the vast majority of genes, enhancers and the underlying regulatory variation remains unknown. Even for the genes with well-characterized enhancers, the nature of the combined effects from multiple enhancers and their variants, when known, on gene expression regulation remains unexplored. Here, we have evaluated the combined effects from five SCN5A enhancers and their regulatory variants that are known to …

Lived Experiences Of Emerging Adults’ Transitioning Back To College Campus After Covid-19., Aleesha Hayes

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The COVID-19 pandemic led to a worldwide shutdown as there were many uncertainties on how to prevent exposure. Emerging adults who were full time students were impacted in a variety of ways, both negatively and positively. There is substantial research on the impact that college students had when transitioning off college campuses. However, there is a lack of literature on the experiences that emerging adults had when transitioning back to college campus after COVID-19. This gap is important because multiple transitions have significant implications for development and well-being. To better understand this, a phenomenological qualitative study was conducted to explore …

Combined immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) and chemoradiation (CRT) is approved in patients with locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) but optimal sequencing of CRT and ICB is unknown. NRG-GY017 (NCT03738228) was a randomized phase I trial of atezolizumab (anti-PD-L1) neoadjuvant and concurrent with CRT (Arm A) vs. concurrent with CRT (Arm B) in patients with high-risk node-positive LACC. The primary endpoint was the fraction of expanded tumor-associated T-cell receptor (TCR) clones in blood at day 21 as a surrogate measure of anti-tumor immune response. Secondary objectives were safety and feasibility, 2-year disease-free survival (DFS), and predictive value of PD-L1 expression. Forty …

Transnational Corporate Law Litigation, William J. Moon Jan 2025

Transnational Corporate Law Litigation, William J. Moon

Duke Law Journal

For nearly half a century, a federal statute colloquially referred to as the Alien Tort Statute has served as a pivotal battleground over whether corporations violating law abroad can be subject to civil suits in the United States. The statute has been used to bring hundreds of lawsuits against corporations involved in some of the most heinous human rights abuses and environmental catastrophes taking place in foreign nations. Recent Supreme Court cases, however, have sounded the death knell for the viability of future cases by restricting the extraterritorial reach of federal statutes.

This Article presents a case for deterring corporate …

Hell Comes With High Water: Hurricanes, Climate Change, And Louisiana's Dire Warning About The Erosion Of Our Speedy Trial Right, Robert F. Cerise

Duke Law Journal

The Sixth Amendment Speedy Trial Clause purportedly protects against undue delays in criminal cases. In order to obtain relief for a speedy trial violation, a defendant must show that a delay has lasted so long as to trigger the four-factor test in Barker v. Wingo (1972). Over time, however, states have codified procedural barriers to this speedy trial analysis. Simultaneously, courts have eroded Barker itself, namely by excusing “neutral” delays and by shifting the burden of proving prejudice resulting from such delays onto defendants. Louisiana is a particularly egregious example of these concerning trends, partly because hurricanes regularly disrupt the …
