Anaesthesiology, East Africa
Severity of illness scores in the critical care context have evolved to serve multiple functions. These scores enable risk-adjusted outcomes to be benchmarked for the assessment of intensive care unit (ICU) performance, inform resource allocation, and enable the characterization of disease severity. Numerous illness severity scores have been developed to optimize calibration at the national level, but few studies have examined the international application of such scores.()
The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated the value of benchmarking outcomes across heterogeneous populations and across various health care systems. Severity of illness scores were widely used to describe trial populations, assess treatment effects and …

Adverse Childhood Experiences, Anger, And Violence Among Justice-Involved Youth: A Network Analysis, Nan Li, Matt Shelton, Elena L. Grigorenko
Psychological Science Faculty Publications
Background: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are a complex construct that can be viewed as a network of interconnected adversities, with some interactions being substantially stronger than others. However, relatively little is known about the complex interactions between adversities in justice-involved youth (JIY). Moreover, even less is known about the pathways through which early adverse experiences contribute to violent offending.
Objective: The present study aimed to identify the most influential adverse event(s) within a network structure of adversity. It also investigated one of the pathways through which ACEs contributed to violent offending.
Participants and setting: We used archival data consisting of …

We Need To Talk: Modernizing Attorney-Client Jail Communications, Cynthia Alkon
We Need To Talk: Modernizing Attorney-Client Jail Communications, Cynthia Alkon
University of Richmond Law Review
Attorney-client jail phone calls, video calls, and emails are all routinely recorded and monitored by jails, with numerous examples of jails and private telecommunications providers giving those recordings and emails to law enforcement and prosecutors. This widespread failure to protect the confidentiality of attorney-client communications prevents lawyers from being able to enjoy easy, quick, and regular communications with their clients. In practice, and despite the ever-expanding communication methods in the outside world, those held in jails in this country while their criminal cases are pending are effectively stuck in the nineteenth century when the only way to communicate was in …

School of Podiatric Medicine Publications
Limb salvage and prosthetics play vital roles in restoring function and mobility for patients with severe injuries or metabolic conditions. Limb salvage involves surgical techniques aimed at preserving a limb rather than resorting to amputation, while prosthetics provide artificial devices to replace lost limbs. Key considerations for limb salvage include restoring a functional foot, maintaining patient independence, minimizing hospitalizations, and avoiding bilateral lower limb amputations.

Radical Restorative Justice: Reflections On Conflict, Trauma, And Hope In Chicagoland Schools, Amy J. Cohen, Uma Blanchard
Radical Restorative Justice: Reflections On Conflict, Trauma, And Hope In Chicagoland Schools, Amy J. Cohen, Uma Blanchard
Cardozo Law Review
This Article tracks how abolitionist and reformist debates are unfolding within urban schools’ attempts to smash the school-to-prison pipeline. We document how Chicago-area public school teachers are grappling with new restorative justice programs and their complex and divergent sociopolitical and institutional meanings. Drawing on over forty qualitative interviews with teachers, we illustrate how difficult widespread implementation of new conflict resolution mechanisms, in the name of restorative justice, are turning out to be. We analyze how teachers are interpreting restorative justice practices and the challenges they involve for students, educators, and school administrators who learn and teach and work in hierarchical …

Addressing the gaps identified by previous health literacy assessments in the Rio Grande Valley, this study evaluated an educational intervention aiming to enhance eHealth literacy among adolescents at a Title I high school by incorporating peer-to-peer education that targeted state educational standards for high school health science courses. Results demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in students' mean eHEALS scores by 6.56%, notably in using online health resources effectively. However, students' abilities to critically evaluate health information showed less improvement. Although statistically significant, the practical relevance of these improvements on students' real-world health-seeking behaviors requires further investigation, pointing to the necessity …

Comparison Between The Partial Least Squares Method And Principal Components Using Genetic Algorithm With An Application, Hayder Osman Hussein, Rabab Abdul Rida Al-Bakri
Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences
The problem of multicollinearity among independent variables in a regression model was addressed in this study using Partial Least Squares (PLS) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The influence exerted by multicollinearity can deteriorate the results of regression modeling; that is, it makes the traditional technique OLS less reliable. The research is centered on applying advanced algorithms for Partial Least Squares (SIMPL and O-PLS) as well as for PCA (NIPALS and SVD) on real-life data scenarios, as well as integrating genetic algorithm (GAs) with these algorithms to optimize predictive performance. The relative efficiency of these methods is evaluated primarily through the …

Analysis And Measurement Of Investment In The Industrial Sector And Its Impact On Unemployment In Iraq For The Period (2004-2022), Haitham Abdul Hussein Kadim, Lawrence Yahiya Saleh Al- Kubaisi
Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences
The study scrutinizes the influence that industrial investment has on unemployment rates in Iraq during the years ranging from 2004 to 2022. Employing the ARDL econometric model, the study analyzes and interprets the net as well as foreign investments and their concomitant relationship with unemployment. The findings reveal a significant and direct qualitative relationship between investment in the industrial sector and unemployment, showing that increased investment in this sector will, indeed, decrease the unemployment level. This has managed to emphasize the importance of an industrial sector in the absorption of surplus labor and contributions to gross domestic product (GDP). Further, …

Understanding social determinants of HIV late presentation with advanced disease (LPWA) beyond individual-level factors could help decrease LPWA and improve population-level HIV outcomes. This study aimed to examine county-level social determinants of health (SDOH) with HIV late presentation. We aggregated datasets for analysis by linking statewide HIV diagnosis data from the South Carolina (SC) Enhanced HIV/AIDS Reporting System and multiple social contextual datasets (e.g., the American Community Survey). All adult (18 years and older) people with HIV diagnosed from 2014 to 2019 in SC were included. Linear mixed models with forward selection were employed to explore the association of county-level …

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is linked to substance use and lower antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence. However, studies examining the mediational role of substance use between CSA and ART adherence are lacking. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the potential mediational role of substance use between CSA and ART adherence among older adults living with HIV (OALH) (n = 91). Mediation analyses assessed the direct and indirect relationships between CSA, substance use, and ART adherence. Statistically significant differences existed in substance use by gender (male vs. female: 12.3 vs. 9.97) and ART adherence by race (Black vs. …
