Greek Immigration To Richmond, Virginia, And The Southern Variant Theory, Nicole Kappatos

Theses and Dissertations

Greek immigration to the United States occurred in two distinctive waves: the first wave from the 1890s-1920s and the second wave from the 1960s-1980s. This thesis explores the regional diversity of the Greek immigrant experience in the Southern United States through the case study of the Greek community in Richmond, Virginia. The first chapter introduces the history of Greek immigration to the United States, discusses major scholars of Greek American studies, and explains the Southern Variant theory. Chapter two examines the experiences of the first wave of Greek immigrants in Richmond. The third chapter incorporates oral history to explain the …

Domestication And Foreignization Strategies In Translating Sinbad Of The Arabian Nights, Safa M. Elnaili Jan 2014

Domestication And Foreignization Strategies In Translating Sinbad Of The Arabian Nights, Safa M. Elnaili

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Over the centuries translation theories have provided strategies to help the translator overcome various linguistic and cultural obstacles that arise in any intercultural exchange between different languages and cultures. Idioms and culturally-bound expressions are among prominent translation problems, especially when the translation is between two completely different languages like Arabic and English which diverge both linguistically and culturally. The most debated translation strategies are Domestication and Foreignization. This research examines the use of these two strategies in four English translations of one of the world`s most famous cultural collections, The Arabian Nights. The study specifically investigates the use of domestication …

A Paper‐Based Lateral Flow Device For The Detection Of Iαip Via Elisa, Hanno Teiwes Jan 2014

A Paper‐Based Lateral Flow Device For The Detection Of Iαip Via Elisa, Hanno Teiwes

Open Access Master's Theses

This study focuses on the development of a new paper‐based microfluidic device for the detection of IαIP via ELISA. Recent studies proved that the concentration of IαIP is related to the mortality rate of patients who suffer from sepsis. The developed device is able to determine the concentration of IαIP in a buffer solution where a low concentration is an indicator for sepsis. Using a microfluidic valve, the reagents needed to perform the ELISA can be loaded sequentially. The microfluidic device consists of paper on which the channel geometry is printed with wax ink. Different layers of the device are …

Thematic Progression And Rhetorical Structure In Opinion Articles Of An Online Iraqi English Newspaper / Nadia Abed Shakeh, Nadia Abed Shakeh

Student Works (2010-2019)

This study examines how the Iraqi writers maintain cohesion in the text by analyzing the patterns of thematic progression in various rhetorical moves in an online Iraqi newspaper, Azzaman (Zaman). This study integrates two theoretical frameworks such as the rhetorical movement which was modified by Van Dijk (1993) and later modified by Katajamaki and Kosketa (2006) and the thematic progression theory by Danes (1974). From that perspective, this study aims to examine the rhetorical patterns and the occurrence of thematic progression of Azzaman Iraqi newspaper’s opinion articles. To carry out the study, twelve (12) opinion articles from Azzaman’s English edition, …

Anti-Bacterial And Cytotoxic Effects Of King Cobra (Ophiophagus Hannah) Venom L-Amino Acid Oxidase / Lee Mui Li, Mui Li Lee

Student Works (2010-2019)

King cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) venom L-amino acid oxidase (OH-LAAO), a heat stable enzyme, has been shown to exhibit bactericidal activity against several strains of clinical isolates Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Its potency was compared with some common antibiotics such as cefotaxime, kanamycin, tetracycline, vancomycin and penicillin. King cobra venom LAAO was effective in inhibiting Gram-positive bacteria tested, with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 0.78 μg/mL (0.006 μM) and 1.56 μg/mL (0.012 μM) against S. aureus and S. epidermidis, respectively. The MICs are comparable to the MICs of the antibiotics tested. However, the OH-LAAO was moderately effective against the Gram-negative bacteria …

Accentuation, Dieter Gunkel Jan 2014

Accentuation, Dieter Gunkel

Classical Studies Faculty Publications

The accent marks in modern editions of Ancient Greek texts primarily reflect the accentual system of an educated register of the Koine of the early 2nd c. BCE. In this system, phonological, morphological, and lexical factors conspire to associate a pitch accent with one syllable of each lexical word. The phonology of the language permits limited contrasts in accentual position (λιθοβόλος vs. λιθόβολος = lithobólos vs. lithóbolos) and type (ἰσθμοί vs. ἰσθμοῖ = isthmói ̯ vs. isthmôi)̯; in the latter case, the syllable marked with an acute accent hosts a High tone, and that marked with a circumflex hosts a …

(2014) Dialogic Schooling, David K. Kennedy Jan 2014

(2014) Dialogic Schooling, David K. Kennedy

Collected Papers of David Kennedy

This paper offers a genealogy of dialogic education, tracing its origins in Romantic epistemology and corresponding philosophy of childhood, and identifying it as a counterpoint to the purposes and assumptions of universal, compulsory, state-imposed and regulated schooling. Dialogic education has historically worked against the grain of standardized mass education, not only in its view of the nature, capacities and potentialities of children (and therefore of adults as well), but in its economic, political and social views, for which childhood is understood as a promissory condition. Dialogic education is oriented to what Dewey called “a future new society of changed purposes …

Cultural Intelligence: A Model To Empower The West Houston Seventh-Day Adventist Church For Multicultural Ministry, Ashwin James Somasundram Jan 2014

Cultural Intelligence: A Model To Empower The West Houston Seventh-Day Adventist Church For Multicultural Ministry, Ashwin James Somasundram

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. The West Houston Church is a large multicultural congregation and is located within a large multicultural neighborhood on the west side of Houston. As such, one would assume that the church, with its diverse nature, would have an active and strong presence in the local community. However, that was not the case. Pastoral observation suggested that the members were too internally focused and struggled to relate to people from a different cultural background within the congregation. The consequence was a disconnect between the church and the community. There existed a paramount need for cultural intelligence in the minds of …

The Nonviolence Of Jesus: A Hermeneutical Approach, Barbod Salimi Jan 2014

The Nonviolence Of Jesus: A Hermeneutical Approach, Barbod Salimi

Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice

From an interpretive standpoint, the nonviolence of Jesus of Nazareth is thought of by many as relatively unambiguous. Still, across the last two millennia a great many instances of “interpretive gymnastics” have distorted the nonviolent teachings of Jesus. These distortions have been invoked as justification for social oppression, geopolitical warfare, and interpersonal violence, among other things. This essay employs the hermeneutical methodology of Hans-Georg Gadamer and the Biblical criticism of Walter Wink in order to argue that such interpretations constitute erroneous violations of the New Testament texts containing Jesus’ words on nonviolence. The author suggests that any interpretive action with …

The Motion Of Intellect On The Neoplatonic Reading Of Sophist 248e-249d, Eric D. Perl Jan 2014

The Motion Of Intellect On The Neoplatonic Reading Of Sophist 248e-249d, Eric D. Perl

Philosophy Faculty Works

This paper defends Plotinus’ reading of Sophist 248e-249d as an expression of the togetherness or unity-in-duality of intellect and intelligible being. Throughout the dialogues Plato consistently presents knowledge as a togetherness of knower and known, expressing this through the myth of recollection and through metaphors of grasping, eating, and sexual union. He indicates that an intelligible paradigm is in the thought that apprehends it, and regularly regards the forms not as extrinsic “objects” but as the contents of living intelligence. A meticulous reading of Sophist 248e-249d shows that the “motion” attributed to intelligible being is not temporal change but the …

Law Of Limitation, Dieter Gunkel Jan 2014

Law Of Limitation, Dieter Gunkel

Classical Studies Faculty Publications

The ‘Law of Limitation’ refers to a phonological process that limits how far from the end of a word an accent may be located: if the word-final syllable is light, the accent may be located as far from the end of the word as the antepenult, e.g. εὑρήματα[heu̯ rέːmata] ‘discoveries (nom./acc. neuter plural)’, ἐβούλευε [ebóːleu̯ u̯ e] ‘(s)he was deliberating (impf. 3 sg.)’; if the word-final syllable is heavy, the accent may be located as far from word-end as the penult, e.g. εὑρημάτων [heu̯ rεːmátɔːn] ‘discoveries (gen. n. pl.)’, βουλεύω [boːléu̯ u̯ ɔː] ‘I am deliberating (pres. 1 sg.)’ (Göttling …

The Role Of Invitational Theory On Minority Student Enrollment In Advanced Placement Courses, Jason Mcdonald Jan 2014

The Role Of Invitational Theory On Minority Student Enrollment In Advanced Placement Courses, Jason Mcdonald

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The number of students enrolling in Advanced Placement (AP) classes has been increasing in Florida and across the nation over the last decade. However, this trend is not happening for traditionally underserved groups of students such as African Americans, Hispanics, and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. These minority groups are underrepresented in AP classes, while Asian and White students are overrepresented. This trend is alarming because there are qualified minority students who have a great chance of being successful in AP classes according to AP Potential data. For some reason though, these qualified minority and low income students are nevertheless …

A Novel Cytostatic Form Of Autophagy In Sensitization Of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Cells To Radiation By Vitamin D And Vitamin D Analogue, Eb 1089., Khushboo Sharma Jan 2014

A Novel Cytostatic Form Of Autophagy In Sensitization Of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Cells To Radiation By Vitamin D And Vitamin D Analogue, Eb 1089., Khushboo Sharma

Theses and Dissertations

The standard of care for unresectable lung cancer is chemoradiation. However, therapeutic options are limited and patients are rarely cured. While Radiation therapy is effective at killing tumor cells or inhibiting their growth initially, development of resistance to treatments and recurrence of tumors are major issues. One of the major goals of Dr. Gewirtz’s laboratory has been to develop strategies to overcome the resistance and attenuate disease recurrence. One of these attempts involve employing vitamin D and its analogs in combination with radiation therapy. Our proposed studies were based on a previous finding where vitamin D and vitamin D analogs …

The Pastor As Vital Link : A Study In How Seminary-Educated Pastors Engender Engagement With Scripture In Select Congregations, Jewel Gingerich Longenecker Jan 2014

The Pastor As Vital Link : A Study In How Seminary-Educated Pastors Engender Engagement With Scripture In Select Congregations, Jewel Gingerich Longenecker

Dissertations

Problem. The problem this study sought to address was the tendency of “ordinary readers” of Scripture to misuse the Bible on the one hand, or to give up reading it entirely, on the other hand. The purpose of this study was to develop a grounded theory that describes how seminary-educated pastors are successfully leading ordinary readers to informed, enthusiastic engagement with the Bible. The conceptual lenses through which research data were compared to literature in the field included teaching methodologies proposed by Wink, Blair, and Borsch.

Method. The study used a qualitative research design. It was field focused, utilized …

Isolation Of Natural Nrf2 Activators From American Ginseng, Akrm Abdalrahman Jan 2014

Isolation Of Natural Nrf2 Activators From American Ginseng, Akrm Abdalrahman

Theses and Dissertations

Nuclear factor erythroid-2 related factor 2 (Nrf2), a major transcription factor of the endogenous antioxidant defense system, has been proposed as a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of various diseases. However, a small molecule-driven Nrf2 signaling therapeutic approach remains to be established. Herein, we report one such possibility discovered by the bioassay-based fractionation of American ginseng. Since crude extract of American ginseng was found to suppress the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-inflamed macrophages via activating Nrf2, we further fractioned the crude extract using solvents including hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, butanol, and water, and found …

Western And Oriental Worlds Of Literature And Modern Greek Literature, Maro Kalantzopoulou Dec 2013

Western And Oriental Worlds Of Literature And Modern Greek Literature, Maro Kalantzopoulou

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Western and Oriental Worlds of Literature and Modern Greek Literature" Maro Kalantzopoulou explores the extent to which modern Greek literature can be seen as linked to Western and Oriental literary cultures. She discusses examples of literary phenomena featuring Western influences, as well as works which are linked in different ways to Southeastern Europe in general, the Ottoman world, and Oriental literary cultures. Kalantzopoulou's claim is that scholarship tends to associate modern Greek literature with Western literary cultures and dismisses non-Western contributions and influences. Kalantzopoulou suggests that by acknowledging the historical situatedness of such assumptions and by examining …

Parallel Women Characters And Femininity In Durrell's And Kazantzakis's Work, Helena González-Vaquerizo Dec 2013

Parallel Women Characters And Femininity In Durrell's And Kazantzakis's Work, Helena González-Vaquerizo

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Parallel Women Characters and Femininity in Durrell's and Kazantzakis's Work" Helena González-Vaquerizo discusses Nikos Kazantzakis's and Lawrence Durrell's fiction with regard their narration of women protagonists. Further, considering both writers' role in a modernist literature and issues of gender identity, González-Vaquerizo examines the special relationship women have with nature. For both writers, the female and the feminine seem to be the pagan descendant of a powerful goddess and women's carnality is seen as key to man's spiritual experience. González-Vaquerizo posits that a comparative approach to Durrell and Kazantzakis both with regard to their biographies and their novels …

Bilingual Language Switching And Selection At The Phonetic Level: Asymmetrical Transfer In Vot Production, Daniel J. Olson Nov 2013

Bilingual Language Switching And Selection At The Phonetic Level: Asymmetrical Transfer In Vot Production, Daniel J. Olson

School of Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

The present study examines the effect of language switching on phonetic production, contributing to an understanding of the underlying interaction between a bilingual’s two phonetic systems. While phonetic interaction has been studied in non-switched and codeswitched paradigms, effects of connected speech (e.g. speech planning, pragmatics, etc.) may obscure underlying phonetic interaction. To investigate the impact of language switching, a cued picture-naming task was employed, with Spanish-English bilinguals of differing dominance profiles naming pictures in English and Spanish. Stimuli were produced both as switched and non-switched tokens. Addressing the impact of context, stimuli were presented in three contexts varying in quantity …

Constructions Of Childhood On The Funerary Monuments Of Roman Athens, Grizelda Mcclelland Aug 2013

Constructions Of Childhood On The Funerary Monuments Of Roman Athens, Grizelda Mcclelland

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The object of this study is to examine the iconography of childhood preserved on Attic funerary monuments of the Imperial age. During the Classical period, the Greeks became the first ancient culture to depict children realistically and, over the course of several centuries, they maintained an ability to render the gestures and bearing of the child naturally. The Imperial grave monuments of Roman Athens continue this tradition of naturalistic portrayal, frequently quoting the style and iconography from standing examples of the city's celebrated sculptural past. Of the 577 extant Imperial reliefs, roughly 84 depict infants, children and youths. This series, …
