Towards The Characterization Of A Novel Thermohalophilic Antioxidant Thioredoxin From The Metagenome Of The Red Sea; Lcl Of Atlantis Ii Brine Pool, Mohamed Mohamed Gamal Abdelwahed

Theses and Dissertations

Due to the crucial antioxidant role of Thioredoxin (Trx) system in various vital cellular processes; DNA synthesis, oxidative stress defense, protein folding, apoptosis and cell growth, this fundamental system is widely expressed in mostly all life's kingdoms. Thus using metagenomic approaches to characterize novel Trx system in unexplored harsh environment will open the window for understanding the evolution of Trx system and its unique adaptation in extreme habitations. One of the unexplored unique ecosystems is the Red Sea's Atalntis II brine pool, specifically, the lower convective layer (LCL). The exceptional harsh conditions of the LCL; anoxic condition, high temperature around …

Miniaturization Of Electrical Ultrafine Particle Sizers, Siqin He May 2014

Miniaturization Of Electrical Ultrafine Particle Sizers, Siqin He

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Nanoparticles, or ultrafine particles, have potential risks for human health, and the adverse health effects caused by ultrafine particles have been proven to be size related. To meet the increasing demanding for personal exposure monitoring and spatial distribution measurements of ultrafine particles, this dissertation studied the development and miniaturization of electrical ultrafine particle sizers (EUPS). There are three essential components for developing a EUPS unit: a charger to electrically charge the sample particles, an electrical mobility classifier to classify the charged particles, and a downstream particle count detector to measure the number concentrations. Two generations of EUPS were developed in …

The Rise Of Bulgarian Nationalism And Russia's Influence Upon It., Lin Wenshuang May 2014

The Rise Of Bulgarian Nationalism And Russia's Influence Upon It., Lin Wenshuang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The exercise of nationalism is the assertion of the political sovereignty of a community in the form of a nation-state. In the case of Bulgaria, nationalism, in practice, was a long journey towards the establishment of a Bulgarian nation-state. This dissertation aims to clarify the place and role of nationalism in the reconstruction of the Bulgarian state and to examine to what extent the development of Bulgarian nationalism was influenced by Russia at the vital stage - the 1870s, when the nation fought hard against Ottoman rule and finally achieved national liberation. My motivation for examining Russo-Bulgarian historical, political and …

The Hellenic Axel: The Greek Hellenization Of Central Asia And Its Impact Of The Development Of Buddhism, Ledio Hysi May 2014

The Hellenic Axel: The Greek Hellenization Of Central Asia And Its Impact Of The Development Of Buddhism, Ledio Hysi

HIM 1990-2015

The study of the Hellenistic period has produced a historical construction of the various relationships that formed between the Greco-Macedonian settlers and the natives they came into contact with. Hellenic kings established kingdoms as far as modern day Pakistan, Afghanistan and India, bringing them into contact with the Persian and Indian natives. The study herein is focused on the relationship that formed between the Greco-Macedonian descendants and the Buddhist group that emerged out of India. Numismatic evidence shows that Greco-Bactrian and Indo-Greek kings held political control over regions bordering the Hindu Kush; furthermore, the Indo-Greek coins indicate a relationship between …

Debating Their Beliefs To Victory: How The Beliefs Of Presidential Candidates Transform The Rhetoric Used In Presidential Debates, Aubrey Marks May 2014

Debating Their Beliefs To Victory: How The Beliefs Of Presidential Candidates Transform The Rhetoric Used In Presidential Debates, Aubrey Marks

HIM 1990-2015

As presidential candidates rhetorically articulate their beliefs during presidential debates, they reveal a lot about their underlying ideological beliefs. These beliefs were examined through the lens of an established methodology called the Operational Code, which uses a program to decipher a candidate's beliefs through what they say in debate transcripts. In this study, the belief trends of the Operational Codes of all presidential candidates from 1976-2012 were examined through a rhetorical lens, and it was found that rhetoric was indeed the driving force for the apparent changes in Operational Code beliefs. These changes were examined on a greater level of …

Enculturation Of The Gospel Through Image: Influences And Attitudes Surrounding Early Christian Art, Peter Santandreu May 2014

Enculturation Of The Gospel Through Image: Influences And Attitudes Surrounding Early Christian Art, Peter Santandreu

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"The Gospel message, it seems, cannot exist in a “pure” form. It is always mediated through a culture, literary style, historical circumstance or artistic practice. This means that it incorporates influences that are alien to it, though it does so in a critical manner. With regards to the biblical account, such a realization led to the search for the “historical Jesus” which began in the 18th century. This study will take into account the socio‐cultural and historical factors that went into the first production of Christian images aimed at …

Biblical Hermeneutics For The Twenty-First Century African American Church: Introducing Seven Key Solutions Promoting Higher Education, Jacqueline Montague May 2014

Biblical Hermeneutics For The Twenty-First Century African American Church: Introducing Seven Key Solutions Promoting Higher Education, Jacqueline Montague

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Despite the fact that education builds knowledge, higher learning through Seminary is preached from many African American pulpits as having little merit. The author's hope is to channel broader understanding on how the seminary experience can make a difference in accomplishing the assignment commissioned by Jesus to a postmodern society. To achieve this goal, the author divulges the importance and necessity of seminary studies from a semiotic approach. Research includes a study of the hermeneutic circle and its three parts: text, messenger, and listeners; collected data from culture analyses and statistical reports to comprise three pastoral interviews. The objective is …

The Greek And Sanskrit Grammarians: A Comparative Analysis, Randall Craig Meister, Dr. Polyxeni Strolonga Apr 2014

The Greek And Sanskrit Grammarians: A Comparative Analysis, Randall Craig Meister, Dr. Polyxeni Strolonga

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The ancient grammarians of Greece and India followed an informatively comparable methodology in the light of modern-day ancient language pedagogy. This study examined the ancient texts of the Ashtadhyayi by Panini, Techne Grammike by Dionysius Thrax, and Peri Syntaxeos by Apollonius Dyscolus in terms of structure, potential application, and the reality of modern-day application within educational settings. Such an analysis yielded invaluable information concerning a number of common trends and principles among two of the central civilizations to influence the indo-european tradition of language teaching throughout the ages.

The Imperial Temple At Antiochia Ad Cragum: Aspects Of Architecture And Iconography, Geraldine S. Dobos

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

Along the northeastern Mediterranean shore lies Antiochia ad Cragum, an ancient city located in the western area of the Roman province of Rough Cilicia. It is now known as the village of Guney, in southern Turkey. The Northeast Temple is the first Imperial structure at Antiochia that has been revealed in its entirety and its reconstruction is anticipated. This excavation by the University of Nebraska (Antiochia ad Cragum Archaeological Research Project, or ACARP), is directed by UNL Professor Michael Hoff.

The hypothetical reconstruction of the Northeast Temple’s geison course, which I present, emphasizes certain diagnostic features that may be used …

However, this journal does not limit its content to …

Who Emerges In Conversation? An Abolitionist Interruption That Teaches, Cathrine Ryther Apr 2014

Who Emerges In Conversation? An Abolitionist Interruption That Teaches, Cathrine Ryther

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

I draw on Maurice Blanchot's distinction between dialogue and conversation in order to argue for reconsidering conversation as a distinct resource for encountering and attending to otherness rather than sameness. Using Blanchot's concepts as a guide, I compare the figures that emerge in a platonic dialogue with those that emerge in a conversation constructed from the work of two contemporary philosophers: Adriana Cavarero and Jacques Rancière. Allowing these philosophers to do most of the talking, I highlight the emergence in conversation of abolitionist figures with symbolic freedom, in contrast to the emergence in dialogue of substantive and symbolically ordered figures.

Teaching Preeminence In Renaissance Florence: Leonardo Bruni’S Translation And Dedication Of Pseudo-Aristotle’S Economics, Jason F. Amato Mar 2014

Teaching Preeminence In Renaissance Florence: Leonardo Bruni’S Translation And Dedication Of Pseudo-Aristotle’S Economics, Jason F. Amato

Graduate History Conference, UMass Boston

Renaissance scholars consider Leonardo Bruni’s translation of the Pseudo-Aristotelian Economics, a work dedicated to Cosimo de’ Medici in 1420, the beginning of the Italian humanists’ interaction with newly readable Greek sources. The text was among the first Greek documents Westerners embraced and translated into Latin or the vernacular of the Quattrocento. Thus, it played a significant role in the revival of the ancient Greek language amongst humanists, which was largely lost since the fall of the Roman Empire. However, this paper argues that Bruni’s translation of the Pseudo-Aristotelian Economics also represents the utilization of an important Roman source: Seneca …

Aeschynē In Aristotle's Conception Of Human Nature, Melissa Marie Coakley Mar 2014

Aeschynē In Aristotle's Conception Of Human Nature, Melissa Marie Coakley

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation provides a thorough examination of the role of aeschynē (as distinct from aidōs) in Aristotle’s conception of human nature by illuminating the political and ethical implications of shame and shamelessness and the effect of these implications in his treatises. It is crucial, both to one’s own personhood and eudaimonia as well as to the existence of a just and balanced state, that aeschynē be understood and respected because of the self-evaluating ability that it maintains.

The aim of this work is to show that a recognition and appreciation of aeschynē as understood in Aristotle’s conception of human …

Proceeding On Parmenides’ Path Of Persuasion, Wesley Jamison Brand Feb 2014

Proceeding On Parmenides’ Path Of Persuasion, Wesley Jamison Brand

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

The poem of the Presocratic philosopher Parmenides about “What Is” deeply influenced the course of Western philosophy, yet scholars widely dispute the meaning of the poem. Diverging from all previous metaphysical interpretations, I argue that Parmenides’ subject was his novel method of argument – logic itself.

The Interchange Of Plain Velar And Aspirate In Kronos/Chronos: A Case For Etymological Equivalence, Roberto Peter Bongiovanni Feb 2014

The Interchange Of Plain Velar And Aspirate In Kronos/Chronos: A Case For Etymological Equivalence, Roberto Peter Bongiovanni

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Despite the current state of uncertainty regarding the etymology of Kronos, the equivalence long familiar to the ancients between Kronos and Chronos is still a moot point. Arguments denying their etymological equivalence can no longer firmly rely on linguistic arguments. It is therefore necessary to examine the validity of the time-honored interpretation of Kronos as the personification of Time. The solution to this problem is of considerable importance to Classical studies, since it will not so much as contribute to a better understanding of the myth of Kronos, as the interpretation of Kronos as Time is already familiar from ancient …

Eye Of The Beholder, Law Of The Harvest: Observations On The Inevitable Consequences Of The Different Investigative Approaches Of Jeremy Runnells And Jeff Lindsay, Kevin Christensen Jan 2014

Eye Of The Beholder, Law Of The Harvest: Observations On The Inevitable Consequences Of The Different Investigative Approaches Of Jeremy Runnells And Jeff Lindsay, Kevin Christensen

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In his Letter to a CES Director, Jeremy Runnells explains how a year of obsessive investigation brought about the loss of his testimony. In an LDS FAQ, LDS blogger Jeff Lindsay deals with all of the same questions, and has done so at least twenty years and has not only an intact testimony, but boundless enthusiasm. What makes the difference? In the parable of the Sower, Jesus explained that the same seeds (words) can generate completely different harvests, ranging from nothing to a hundredfold increase, all depending on the different soil and nurture. This essay looks at how different expectations …

Rhetoric, Rights, And Pragmatism In The Germanies: Enlightenment Reform In Eighteenth-Century Prussia And Bavaria, Benjamin T. Harris Jan 2014

Rhetoric, Rights, And Pragmatism In The Germanies: Enlightenment Reform In Eighteenth-Century Prussia And Bavaria, Benjamin T. Harris

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This project highlights the nature of Enlightenment reform in 18th-century Germany, particularly in the Kingdom of Prussia and the Electorate of Bavaria under Frederick II and Maximilian III Joseph. Both of these rulers launch similar reforms under the guise of enlightened absolutism and enlightenment rhetoric with very different results, each catering to the specific needs of their respective principalities. Reform is offered along the lines of compulsory education, codification, humanitarian legal reform, and religious toleration, all in the spirit of the Enlightenment. However, when the extent and details of these reforms are examined, it can be demonstrated that …

Symphonia Catholica: The Merger Of Patristic And Contemporary Sources In The Theological Method Of Amandus Polanus (1561-1610)., Byung Soo Han

CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation intends to answer, by investigating the merger of patristic and contemporary sources in the theological method of Amandus Polanus, a significant question concerning the way in which the intellectual and methodological eclecticism of the Reformed was able to establish a coherent “system” of thought capable of defense as not only confessional but also orthodox in its theology and broadly catholic, drawing both on the thought of the Reformers and on the resources of the great tradition of Christian thought that extended back to the church fathers. From a methodological perspective, Polanus’s development from the Ramistically-organized doctrinal framework of …

The Intrinsic Value Of The Liberal Arts: Cicero’S Example, Kate Wintrol Jan 2014

The Intrinsic Value Of The Liberal Arts: Cicero’S Example, Kate Wintrol

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

The liberal arts, first described in Republican Rome, have been a component of higher education since the advent of the medieval university in the eleventh century. Despite such historical lineage, the value of a liberal arts education is continuously and publicly called into question, and this is a special problem for honors programs, most of which are rooted in the liberal arts. In the public debate about the liberal arts, politicians often insist that higher education must produce quantifiable results and consider subjects such as philosophy unnecessary at best and useless at worst. For example, Patrick McCrory, Governor of North …
