Unity And Obedient Discipleship In John 17, James B. Joseph
Unity And Obedient Discipleship In John 17, James B. Joseph
Faculty Dissertations
This paper addresses the issue of Christian Unity as expressed in John 17. It shows, through evaluation of the text itself that: (1) Unity is based on love for and obedience to, Jesus Christ; (2) the Father and the Son. Together, send the Spirit of Truth to dwell in all believers; (3) all believers are loved by the Father just as He loves Jesus. A proper relationship with the Father and Jesus places all believers in Unity with each other as one family of God which is comprised of many brothers who are also friends. Unity is Visible

Pastoral Emphases In Premarital Counseling, Paul Bramstedt
Pastoral Emphases In Premarital Counseling, Paul Bramstedt
Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
Many things in life start out as being something that is optional, but as time passes they soon become a necessity. Premarital counseling is one aspect of ministry which forty years ago was considered an optional service by many pastors. Today it is viewed as a necessity.
Premarital counseling which is conducted by a Christian minister is rooted in the Word of God. Teachings of Holy Scripture in respect to marriage are at the heart and core of the counseling process. While the premarital counseling which a Christian minister conducts may cover various topics, there are distinct pastoral emphases which …

Burnout In The Pastoral Ministry: The Need For Clear Boundaries, Russell Weise
Burnout In The Pastoral Ministry: The Need For Clear Boundaries, Russell Weise
Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
A survey was conducted of 138 pastors in The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod in the Central and Southern Illinois districts in the Fall of 1991. The purpose of the survey was to determine the level of stress and burnout in the pastor's lives.
The survey revealed the following: generally pastors are very satisfied with their calling as pastors, but the findings reveal the pastor's strong proclivity to ignore his wife and family and to deny any possible warning signs of stress and burnout. The findings also uncovered that pastors are eager to have support groups but find themselves not wanting to …

Without Virtue There Can Be No Liberty, Suzanna Sherry
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Over the past two and a quarter centuries, Americans have understood rights and liberties in a variety of different ways. What I hope to do in this essay is to describe the two most prominent traditions of our heritage of liberty, and then to explore a way in which we might reconcile the conflicts between them and make both traditions useful in the service of liberty today.

Alexander On Form-In-Matter And The Breakdown Of Aristotle's Categories, John O. Ellis
Alexander On Form-In-Matter And The Breakdown Of Aristotle's Categories, John O. Ellis
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
My discussion is divided into six sections. In the first I provide some background to the form-in-matter problem in Aristotle; the second focusses on Alexander's solution to the problem; in the third, we consider Plotinus' contribution; in the fourth, there's brief treatment of the problem by the commentators on the Categories; and finally in the fifth section I look at what I call the 'Lucius problem' - this pertains directly to the substantial qualities doctrine, and it reveals, I suggest, how Alexander's way of solving the form-in-matter problem contributes to the breakdown of Aristotelian categories. In the sixth section …

The Future Of Denominational Research: Souther Baptist Research Fellowship, Larry L. Mcswain
The Future Of Denominational Research: Souther Baptist Research Fellowship, Larry L. Mcswain
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
Denominational researchers must focus on their unique role in relation to the role of other researchers. Our future as competent and effective researchers is dependent on our ability to keep up with the technology available to us. We must develop and maintain networks among researchers to avoid duplication of effort and create adequate sharing of what we know. We must also find ways to include the most difficult research subjects in our efforts. Moreover, if our calling is to have any meaning we must have the kinds of relationships and influence with decision makers that the information we have will …

Monsters Of Antithesis, Melody Leming-Wilson
Monsters Of Antithesis, Melody Leming-Wilson
Anthós Journal (1990-1996)
This paper traces and interrogates the multiple theories of matriarchy that have arisen in recent years and then turns to the Greek myths to show how matriarchies functioned in this literature. The theories of matriarchy often stem from the pre-Hellenic stories of matriarchy shown in Greek myths. In addition, these theories often suggest that the colonizing force of Indo-Europeans changed these myths into patriarchical ones. The Amazonian women can be seen to upset the patriarchal myth in important and interesting ways which suggest a matriarchal underpinning to their society. The question of whether a historical matriarchy actually existed is shown …

[Review Of] Charles C. Moskos. Greek Americans: Struggle And Success, Phillips G. Davies
[Review Of] Charles C. Moskos. Greek Americans: Struggle And Success, Phillips G. Davies
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
This book should be of primary interest to people at the some thirty colleges and universities which offer courses in Greek American literature and culture. First published in 1980, the major strong point of this book is that the two added chapters and appendix deal with very recent developments on the Greek American scene, particularly the candidacy of Michael Dukakis for president.
