Physical Fitness Is Predictive For 5-Year Survival In Older Adults With Intellectual Disabilities, Alyt Oppewal, Thessa I.M. Hilgenkamp
Physical Fitness Is Predictive For 5-Year Survival In Older Adults With Intellectual Disabilities, Alyt Oppewal, Thessa I.M. Hilgenkamp
Physical Therapy Faculty Research
Background: The very low physical fitness levels of people with intellectual disabilities (ID) may influence their life expectancy. Therefore, we investigated the predictive value of physical fitness for survival in older adults with intellectual disabilities. Method: In the Healthy Ageing and Intellectual Disabilities (HA‐ID) study, the physical fitness levels of 900 older adults (≥50 years; 61.5 ± 8.1 years) were measured at baseline. All‐cause mortality was collected over a 5‐year follow‐up period. Cox proportional hazard models were used to determine the association between each physical fitness test and survival, adjusted for age, sex, level of ID, and Down syndrome. Results: The …

The Roles Of Race And Gender In Contagious Yawning, Daroon Jalil
The Roles Of Race And Gender In Contagious Yawning, Daroon Jalil
James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)
Social psychologists often consider race to be a marker of in- or out-group status. When looking at race, implicit bias can take more subtle forms than outward racism. This study asked two research questions to better understand the psychology behind racial issues. The first question was whether the number of contagious yawns (CY) a person experiences depends on the race of the stimuli being viewed. Yawning more in response to in-group members is a phenomenon seen in chimpanzees, but it has not been studied in humans in a racial context. Black and white males and females were recruited to view …

Measuring Emotional Response To A Planting Activity For Staff At An Urban Office Setting: A Pilot Study, Amy E. Wagenfeld, Sandra Schefkind, Nancy Hock
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Background: Interaction with occupation-centered activities, such as gardening, is associated with improved mental health. With limited evidence supporting the effects of short-term nature-based interventions on employees’ emotional states, the purpose of this research was to understand the impact of a one-time, short-term nature-based intervention on the emotional state of employees at an urban office building.
Method: This pretest/posttest design study used a visual analogue emoticon assessment tool, the Interaction with Nature scale, to measure differences in the participants’ emotional states before and after participating in a planting activity. Twenty-two participants engaged in the study. Each participant potted a …

Dementia Education: What Are The Needs Of Post-Secondary Students In London, Ontario?, Tri Le
Dementia Education: What Are The Needs Of Post-Secondary Students In London, Ontario?, Tri Le
Student Work - Community Studies
Dementia is a chronic and progressive syndrome characterized by the disturbance of multiple brain functions. As of 2008, an estimated 500,000 Canadians will have a dementia diagnosis and is predicted to rise to 1.1 million Canadians in 2038. A lack of dementia awareness has been identified by McCormick Dementia Services. This study examines the current dementia knowledge of a small cross-section of post-secondary students in London, Ontario. A sample size of twenty-eight participants took an online survey in which students identified that they were able to recognize and had sufficient knowledge of dementia. The survey revealed that although adequate knowledge …
Embracing The Views Of Those Who Matter The Most: An Approach Towards A More Sustainable Recreational Program For Older Adults, Apurva Desai
Embracing The Views Of Those Who Matter The Most: An Approach Towards A More Sustainable Recreational Program For Older Adults, Apurva Desai
Student Work - Community Studies
Introduction: With age, older adults may face increasing challenges to community recreational participation. This is usually not for the lack of programming, rather, it may be the result of older adults not finding the programming to be as meaningful. Among other issues, there may be little to no opportunity for self-determination (defined as, having a perceived sense of control over one’s environment), which has been shown to be a critical factor for successful aging. Older adults are usually not at the center of the process; programs are instead primarily driven by the needs of the organization. Community recreational facilities, such …
Effectiveness Of Telepsychiatry Among Geriatric Participants With Age-Related Hearing Loss, Stephanie Mock
Effectiveness Of Telepsychiatry Among Geriatric Participants With Age-Related Hearing Loss, Stephanie Mock
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Presbycusis (hearing loss that occurs with age) affects 30% of adults aged 65 to 74, yet hearing loss is rarely considered when developing novel treatment deliveries. For example, research shows that telepsychiatry improves depression symptoms among geriatric patients similarly to traditional forms of therapy, however, there is no literature on effectiveness of telepsychiatry in geriatrics with presbycusis. The objective of this study is to assess whether, compared to face-to-face psychotherapy, telepsychiatry produces superior outcomes assessed by the Beck Depression Inventory II, among depressed geriatric patients suffering from presbycusis. We will conduct a randomized controlled trial among elderly individuals with depressive …
Smartphones And Schoolwork: Determining The Relationship Between Students’ Beliefs And Habits Regarding Phones, Luke Breems
Smartphones And Schoolwork: Determining The Relationship Between Students’ Beliefs And Habits Regarding Phones, Luke Breems
Master of Education Program Theses
This action research project investigated the relationship between students’ beliefs about the effects of using phones concurrently with schoolwork and the extent to which they engage in that behavior. Forty-five students from an independent school in southwestern Ontario participated in a study to determine their beliefs about phones’ effects on their schoolwork, and their responses were compared to observational data regarding how frequently they checked their phones during class. The results of the study indicate that, on average, students believe phones have little effect on their schoolwork, in contrast to current academic literature, which suggests an overall negative effect. This …
Comparing The Effects Of High-Intensity Interval Training Versus Moderate Intensity Continuous Training On Vo2max/Peak, Blood Pressure, And Weight Loss In Patients With Cardiovascular Disease Or Risk Factors, Kirsten Shimizu
Physician Assistant Capstones
With increasing numbers of persons affected by CVD, it is important to examine innovative forms of exercise to find regimens that may fit individual lifestyles. A common barrier for adults meeting the minimum-recommended level of physical activity is lack of time.10 Decreasing the time required for effective exercise would surmount this barrier. Current guidelines suggest that 1 minute of vigorous activity equates to 2 minutes of moderate intensity activity. Thus, HIIT may provide a novel way to incorporate vigorous exercise for people who are limited on time or those not fit enough to perform continuous high-intensity exercise.11 Current research comparing …
Self-Regulation: A Cross-Sectional Study Of Preschool-Age Children, Sam J. Fugate
Self-Regulation: A Cross-Sectional Study Of Preschool-Age Children, Sam J. Fugate
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Self-regulation predicts school readiness and consists of “cool” and “hot” self regulation. “Cool” self-regulation is characterized by inhibition of a dominant response, working memory, and set shifting. “Hot” self-regulation involves inhibition, shifting attention, and regulation of emotion in arousing situations. In this study, self-regulation was measured in 80 preschool-age children (3-5 years). Two “cool” tasks (Pencil Tap and Day/Night) were coded for percent correct, and the other two “cool” tasks (Dimensional Change Card Sort and Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulders) were coded for total score. The “hot” task (Snack Delay) was coded for compliance to task demands (no touching of snack/materials until timer beeped …

Age Differences In Attentional Capture Effects Of Emotional Faces, Shelby King
Age Differences In Attentional Capture Effects Of Emotional Faces, Shelby King
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Sustained attention is necessary to accurately complete cognitive tasks. However, sustained attention can often be disrupted by distracting information. When distractors contain emotional content, past research suggests that they might attract attention. The rapid detection of emotional information is important in everyday life because emotion often emerges in social interaction, including unpleasant interactions where others might pose a threat. The attentional capture effects of emotional faces were explored by inserting them into a visual search task that included differing levels of perceptual load. Twenty-five younger adults and twenty older adults identified target letters in standard trials containing distracting elements, but …
Changes In Mitochondrial Protein Expression In Human Cd4 + T Cells During The Initiation And Progression Of Diabetes, Alanna Keady
Changes In Mitochondrial Protein Expression In Human Cd4 + T Cells During The Initiation And Progression Of Diabetes, Alanna Keady
Health Sciences Student Work
Introduction: Chronic sterile inflammation that underlies obesity can promote unhealthy cellular changes eventually leading to a decline in metabolic health and type-2 diabetes. Dysregulation of cellular processes during the initiation and progression of obesity can impair inflammatory homeostasis leading to a proinflammatory Th17 cytokine profile by CD4 + Tcells. Our ongoing research efforts are to understand the mechanistic link between the changes in a cellular housekeeping process known as autophagy and the regulation of Th17 cytokines in obese non diabetic and diabetic subjects. Methods: We assessed cellular protein expression and colocalization using immunoblotting, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry and ELISA assays. Results: …

Understanding The Role Of Relationship Maintenance In Enduring Couple Partnerships In Later Adulthood, Jill M. Chonody, Jacqui Gabb
Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Intimate relationships in later adulthood are understudied despite their positive association with health and well-being. This cross-sectional mixed methods study sought to redress this gap by investigating relationship maintenance in later adulthood. Our international sub-sample comprised 1,565 participants aged 55 + and in an ongoing relationship. Results from hierarchical multiple regression indicated that overall happiness with the relationship had the largest effect size on relationship maintenance, with 53% of the variance explained. Content analyses of open-ended questions identified companionship and laughter as some of the “best liked” aspects of the relationship. Housework/cooking and saying “I love you” were among the …

Humor Therapy To Alleviate Depression, Joanna Dafin, Claire Venn
Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
The researchers have studied the topic of Humor Therapy. According to the literature, there is no agreement on how humor therapy should be defined. In general, it is the facilitation of activities that trigger laughter ranging from funny videos to laughter yoga. At the very beginning, the researchers both found literature that was relevant to our research topic. After reviewing the literature, we contacted an expert and interviewed the CTRS regarding previous experiences with Humor Therapy. With the information from all these resources, we developed a knowledge translation plan to guide CTRS through the use of Humor Therapy. One of …

To follow-up on our previous report that acarbose (ACA), a drug that blocks postprandial glucose spikes, increases mouse lifespan, we studied ACA at three doses: 400, 1,000 (the original dose), and 2,500 ppm, using genetically heterogeneous mice at three sites. Each dose led to a significant change (by log-rank test) in both sexes, with larger effects in males, consistent with the original report. There were no significant differences among the three doses. The two higher doses produced 16% or 17% increases in median longevity of males, but only 4% or 5% increases in females. Age at the 90th percentile was …

Non-Physician Vs. Physician: Cross-Disciplinary Expert Testimony In Medical Negligence Litigation, Marc D. Ginsberg
Non-Physician Vs. Physician: Cross-Disciplinary Expert Testimony In Medical Negligence Litigation, Marc D. Ginsberg
Georgia State University Law Review
The source of the applicable standard of care in a specific medical negligence claim is multifaceted. The testifying expert witness, when explaining the applicable standard of care, “would draw upon his own education and practical frame of reference as well as upon relevant medical thinking, as manifested by literature, educational resources and information available to practitioners, and experiences of similarly situated members of the profession.” Accordingly, in typical medical negligence litigation, the plaintiff’s expert witness testifying regarding the existence of and the defendant-physician’s deviation from the standard of care would be a physician. Why, then, have courts permitted non-physicians to …
Social Discounting: An Examination Of The Neural And Behavioral Performance Of Individuals Making Altruistic Decisions About Family Members, Chesney Arend
Honors Thesis
Social Discounting is defined as the decrease in generosity between the decision maker (participant) and the recipient of a gift as social distance (perceived closeness) between the two increases. To date, there is little data that has been collected that compares both the responses of behavioral performance and the corresponding neural activity when individuals are asked to make decisions about money based upon how close they feel to someone of their kin or not of their kin as their perceived social distances or relationships change. This specific study includes both fMRI and behavioral data analysis and takes into account the …
