Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Students' Perceptions Of The Three Ps In Preparation For Clinical Practice, Michael D. Moon Mar 2020

Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Students' Perceptions Of The Three Ps In Preparation For Clinical Practice, Michael D. Moon

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

In 2008, advanced pathophysiology, advanced physical health assessment, and advanced pharmacology, were mandated as separate courses in APRN education as part of the joint consensus model (AACN & NCSBN, 2008). Currently there is a lack of evidence that supports completion of the three “Ps” as improving APRN confidence in clinical practice.

To investigate whether the completion of the three “Ps” increases APRN students’ confidence prior to completing their first year clinical courses.

Let’S Talk About Death: Conversation And Bereavement In Late-Life Widows And Widowers [Poster], Bekah Bass Mar 2020

Let’S Talk About Death: Conversation And Bereavement In Late-Life Widows And Widowers [Poster], Bekah Bass

Research in the Capitol

Death is a taboo subject in American society, yet it affects everyone at some point in life. By looking at conversations surrounding death from a sociological perspective, I study the association between conversations about death and the grief of those left behind. Using the Changing Lives of Older Couples dataset, I am conducting a secondary data analysis to study the relationship between talking about death with a spouse before death, and the denial and mental health impacts on the widow after death. By understanding how conversations about death may be related to positive or negative outcomes, we can better support …

Older Adults And Information And Communication Technologies In The Global North, Molly-Gloria R. Harper, Barry Wellman, Anabel Quan-Haase Mar 2020

Older Adults And Information And Communication Technologies In The Global North, Molly-Gloria R. Harper, Barry Wellman, Anabel Quan-Haase

FIMS Publications

At all ages, people are incorporating information and communication technologies (ICTs) into their lives. It is not that they have stopped talking with each other in-person, it is that ICTs complement their interactions when they cannot be together face-to-face. Since the 1990s, email has provided a routine way to stay in touch and sustain meaningful contact over distance. But not all age groups have adopted ICTs with the same enthusiasm. Research in the Global North has consistently reported that age plays an important role in ICT adoption and use (Anderson and Perrin 2017). For example, older adults have been the …

Longitudinal Diary Data: Six Months Real-World Implementation Of Affordable Companion Robots For Older People In Supported Living, Hannah L. Bradwell, Rhona Winnington, Serge Thill, Ray B. Jones Mar 2020

Longitudinal Diary Data: Six Months Real-World Implementation Of Affordable Companion Robots For Older People In Supported Living, Hannah L. Bradwell, Rhona Winnington, Serge Thill, Ray B. Jones

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Companion robots have potential for improving wellbeing within aged care, however literature focuses on shorter-term studies often using relatively expensive platforms, raising concerns around novelty effects and economic viability. Here, we report ecologically valid diary data from two supported living facilities for older people with dementia or learning difficulties. Both sites implemented Joy for All robot animals and maintained diaries for six months. Entries were analysed using thematic analysis. We found robot use increased over the six months, changing from short, structured sessions to mainly permanent availability. Thus previously reported concerns on novelty were not warranted. Both sites reported positive …

A Modified Lean And Release Technique To Emphasize Response Inhibition And Action Selection In Reactive Balance, David A.E. Bolton, Manhoud Mansour Mar 2020

A Modified Lean And Release Technique To Emphasize Response Inhibition And Action Selection In Reactive Balance, David A.E. Bolton, Manhoud Mansour

Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications

Assessment of reactive balance traditionally imposes some type of perturbation to upright stance or gait followed by measurement of the resultant corrective behavior. These measures include muscle responses, limb movements, ground reaction forces, and even direct neurophysiological measures such as electroencephalography. Using this approach, researchers and clinicians can infer some basic principles regarding how the nervous system controls balance to avoid a fall. One limitation with the way in which these assessments are currently used is that they heavily emphasize reflexive actions without any need to revise automatic postural reactions. Such an exclusive focus on these highly stereotypical reactions would …

State Variability In The Prevalence And Healthcare Utilization Of Assisted Living Residents With Dementia, Kali S. Thomas, Wenhan Zhang, Portia Y. Cornell, Lindsey Smith, Brian Kaskie, Paula C. Carder

Institute on Aging Publications

Objectives: Almost 1 million older and disabled adults who require long‐term care reside in assisted living (AL), approximately 40% of whom have a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). States vary in their regulations specific to dementia care that may influence the presence of residents with ADRD in AL and their outcomes. The objectives of this study were to describe the state variability in the prevalence of ADRD among Medicare beneficiaries residing in larger (25+ bed) ALs and their healthcare utilization.

Design: Retrospective observational national study.

Participants: National cohort of 293,336 Medicare fee‐for‐service enrollees residing in larger (25+ …

Population and Public Health Science Faculty Publications

Objectives Abdominal obesity is more closely associated with diabetes than general obesity in adults, however, it is unknown which kind of obesity is more closely associated with abnormal glucose metabolism in children. Research design and methods We recruited 973 children (aged 3.08±1.06) of mothers with prior gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Children's height, weight, waist circumstance, fasting glucose and insulin were measured using standardized methods. Logistic regression models were used to assess the single and joint associations of general and abdominal obesity with the risks of hyperglycemia (the upper quartile of fasting glucose), insulin resistance (the upper quartile of homeostatic model …

BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing

Hip and knee replacement surgeries are complex procedures with many risks and complications post-surgery. Patient education preoperatively has shown to limit some of these complications but nothing is reported on the effect of preoperative education on the length of stay in Lebanon. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the effect of a structured preoperative education to patients undergoing selected orthopedic surgeries. A pilot study for a randomized controlled trials (RCT).The study was conducted at Al Zahraa Hospital and Rafic Hariri University Hospital (RHUH). The study was introduced to potential participants, baseline data was collected and then patients were …

Background: Sex may be an important modifier of brain health in response to risk factors. We compared brain structure and function of older overweight and obese women and men with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: Cross-sectional cognitive assessments and magnetic resonance images were obtained in 224 women and 95 men (mean age 69 years) with histories of type 2 diabetes mellitus and overweight or obesity. Prior to magnetic resonance images, participants had completed an average of 10 years of random assignment to either multidomain intervention targeting weight loss or a control condition of diabetes support and education. Total (summed gray …

A Melting Pot Of Medications: Issues Regarding Over-Prescribing In Dementia Populations, Angela Gifford

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Over-prescribing is an issue faced by many in the older population, but dementia patients statistically experience higher prescribing rates of potentially inappropriate medications compared to their peers. There are currently no FDA approved medications available for the direct treatment of dementia, but drug classes like anticholinergics and psychotropics are used for the management of behavioral symptoms associated with the disease. These drugs can cause negative side-effects in the dementia populations including gastrointestinal issues, neurological issues, increased hospitalizations, and increased mortality rates within this group. Most troubling, the benefits that are supposed to occur from taking these drugs have been show …
