The Effects Of Saido Learning On The Cognition Of Patients With Dementia: A Retrospective Study, Stephanie N. Laduke
The Effects Of Saido Learning On The Cognition Of Patients With Dementia: A Retrospective Study, Stephanie N. Laduke
Honors Projects
SAIDO Learning is a cognitive and social intervention developed by the Kumon Institute in 2004 to slow the progress of symptoms in patients diagnosed with dementia. Today, twenty-three nursing facilities nationwide utilize SAIDO Learning. The data in this retrospective study compare the baseline Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE) scores to the MMSE scores obtained six months after SAIDO Learning is implemented from patients diagnosed with dementia at Waterford Place in Jenison, Michigan. These scores are reassessed every 6 months as a standard of care. The data was deidentified by the staff of Waterford Place before given to the research team. A …
Using Five Wishes To Improve Advance Care Planning In A Maryland Primary Care Practice, Amanda Bridges, Msn, Acnp-Bc
Using Five Wishes To Improve Advance Care Planning In A Maryland Primary Care Practice, Amanda Bridges, Msn, Acnp-Bc
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: Advance Care Planning (ACP) at this primary care practice was minimal and lacked a consistent process to document existing advance directives (AD) or educate patients about ADs.
Objectives: The purpose of this QI project was to improve ACP engagement, documentation of existing ADs and educate patients about Five Wishes.
Methodology: Adults, at each office encounter, were asked three kiosk questions: Do you have an AD, know what ADs are and want to discuss ACP? The responses were uploaded to the EHR to become an evidence backed, visual reminder. Affirmation of existing ADs were descriptively documented. ACP engagement was analyzed …

Background: Often occurring after surgery, or hospitalization, the development of delirium in older adults, initiates a cascade of events culminating in loss of independence, increased morbidity and mortality, and high health care costs (Oh, et al., 2017).
Objective: The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project was to adapt and implement best practices using HELP for managing older patients with postoperative delirium through the existing 1:1 observation structure and implementing cognitive care strategies. The 1:1 sitter roles and responsibilities were redesigned to include non-pharmacological, multicomponent interventions.
Methods: The QI project used a pre-test post-test intervention design comparing groups before and …
Utilization Of Patient Toolkit And Discharge Algorithm For Providers To Reduce Readmission Due To Repeat Ground Level Fall, Sara Karl
Doctoral Projects
Introduction. Falls are the leading cause of injury and injury death in adults over the age of 65. A retrospective examination at Level 1 trauma center in the Midwest found that 19.4% (118/605) of older adults admitted with a ground level fall were readmitted with a subsequent fall and injury. The aim of this quality improvement initiative is to determine if the implementation of an evidenced based patient toolkit and a discharge algorithm for providers will reduce outpatient falls. The objective was to reduce hospital readmission due to repeat fall.
Methods: The design of this project was mixed methods, observational, …

Relationship Quality In Kin And Chosen Kin Familial Networks, Eliza Thor
Relationship Quality In Kin And Chosen Kin Familial Networks, Eliza Thor
Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Family relationships are sources of both stress and support for most individuals. They are also among the most resilient, offering support through long periods of conflict. Growing scholarly research on LGB families demonstrates that LGB individuals face greater levels of conflict, which stems from a lack of acceptance of their identities. As of yet, little work has directly compared LGB familial relationships to heterosexual family relationships. This study seeks to fill this gap by comparing the relationship characteristics of LGB and heterosexual individuals using network data drawn from the Nebraska Annual Social Indicators Survey (2018 and 2019). I employed multilevel …

Improving Palliative Care Utilization Process: An Effort To Enhance Providers` Contribution, Orina Machoka
Improving Palliative Care Utilization Process: An Effort To Enhance Providers` Contribution, Orina Machoka
Nursing Capstones
Worldwide, an estimated 20 million people require palliative care. The Worldwide Palliative Care Alliance has identified the need for palliative care has never been higher and is increasing at a rapid rate due to the world`s aging population, increase in cancer, and noncommunicable disease. Despite the increased need, the palliative care establishment has not been efficient in identifying patients who need palliative care. The use of a standardized screening process to assist in the timely identification of patients with palliative care needs is lacking, or in some cases, non-existent. At a Midwestern pain clinic lack of screening is causing a …

A Literature Review On Intermittent Fasting, Kylie Carrero
Senior Honors Theses
Intermittent fasting has been instructed in the Bible as an implied part of daily living. This paper has reviewed the physical benefits of intermittent fasting. In healthy test subjects, it has led to higher levels of autophagy, gut health, and lifespan. In non-healthy test subjects, it has proven beneficial in cancer treatment, as well as in protection against and/or attenuation of the effects of neurodegeneration, metabolic disorders, and cardiovascular diseases. The possible mechanisms underlying these benefits have been discussed in this review.

Regulating Care Robots, Valarie K. Blake
Regulating Care Robots, Valarie K. Blake
Law Faculty Scholarship
Care robots already assist the elderly in some nursing homes around the globe and could be in widespread use in hospitals and private homes sooner than we think. These robots promise great hope for patients: robots can provide increased independence, assistance with daily living, comfort and distraction during procedures, education, and companionship during vulnerable and lonely times in patients' lives. Despite these promising features, there are a number of concerns; care robots, designed with the aim of winning patient trust and affection, have unprecedented access to personal lives as well as recording and sensory capabilities beyond any human. They pose …

Identifying And Characterizing Transgenic Lines That Drive Gene Expression In The Adult Fat Body Of The Drosophila Melanogaster, Michael Edward Meyerink
Identifying And Characterizing Transgenic Lines That Drive Gene Expression In The Adult Fat Body Of The Drosophila Melanogaster, Michael Edward Meyerink
Theses and Dissertations
Adult Drosophila Melanogaster is a powerful model organism in genetic studies and has high tissue and gene homology to humans. Like humans, Drosophila tissues communicate in order to respond to physiological stimuli, such as diet, aging, and disease. The fat body, homologous to human adipocytes and hepatocytes, functions as both an endocrine and energy storage organ; and has been shown to play a critical role in many metabolic processes. The aim of this study is to characterize differences in fat body gene expression to ultimately identify if there are subpopulations of adipocytes with different functions related to fat body communication …
Underlying Racism Within The Opioid Epidemic, Hannah L.A.S. Wilson
Underlying Racism Within The Opioid Epidemic, Hannah L.A.S. Wilson
Brigham Young University Prelaw Review
Within the past century, the United States attempted different legal
avenues to address drug abuse. Some of these efforts made access
to drugs punishable and illegal. Others encouraged research to look
at underlying issues of drug abuse and implement those findings.
Within the past fifty years, these laws tended to treat drug addicts
as criminals instead of as persons suffering from a health crisis.
According to the FBI and Uniform Crime Reports, from the 1980’s
to the 2000’s, drug arrests rose by 1.5 million per year, while drug
usage rates stayed the same.3 The severe increase in the criminalization
and …
Comparison Of Comprehensive Health Score In North American Housed Giraffe And Free-Ranging Giraffe From South Africa, Haley Beer
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Stress is evident in many animal species and has been correlated to disease prevalence. During stressful events, allostasis is initiated by physiologic systems to maintain or reestablish homeostasis to protect an organism’s viability. Over time, the acclimation to frequent stress causes systematic dysregulation, leading to the phenomena of increased allostatic load. Allostatic load has been assessed in animal species via serum through selection of representative, multi-system biomarker indices. Perception and number of stress events may impact dysregulation severity, yielding allostatic load as a predictive tool. However, the allostatic load methodology poses application limitations to individuals without historical data and those …
How Relevant Is The Hippocratic Oath In Guiding Physicians' Views On Physician-Assisted Suicide, Megan Neal
How Relevant Is The Hippocratic Oath In Guiding Physicians' Views On Physician-Assisted Suicide, Megan Neal
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
The Hippocratic Oath is an ancient vow that most doctors, especially within the last century in the United States, take upon their graduation from medical school. The importance of this oath, however, is up for debate as medical advances and cultural beliefs in the rights of the patient evolve. The Hippocratic Oath has been adapted many times over the past few centuries to reflect the beliefs of the period, but the original Oath still survives. One of the most recent movements in the medicine has been the legalization of physician-assisted suicide (PAS) in select states. Using a qualitative, thematic approach, …

Racial-Ethnic Differences In Social Networks And Perceived Support: Measurement Considerations And Implications For Disparities Research, Melissa Flores, John M. Ruiz, Christian Goans, Bert N. Uchino, Michiyo Hirai, Ruben Tinajero, Timothy W. Smith
Psychological Science Faculty Publications
Objectives: Racial-ethnic differences in physical/mental health are well documented as being associated with disparities; however, emerging conceptual models increasingly suggest that group differences in social functioning and organization contribute to these relationships. There is little work examining whether racial-ethnic groups respond similarly to classic measures of social networks and perceived support and whether there are significant between-groups differences on these measures.
Method: A multisite, cross-sectional study of 2,793 non-Hispanic White (NHW), non-Hispanic Black (NHB), and Hispanic participants was conducted using common measures of social networks and perceived support. A confirmatory factor analytic model was used to test for the invariance …

An Investigation Of The Effect Of Chewing On Rhythmic Motor Tasks, Brittany S. Samulski
Rehabilitation Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Chewing gum and walking has traditionally been cited as the quintessentially difficult dual task, but little is known regarding chewing effects on motor control. The aims of this dissertation include describing chewing patterns across adulthood, describing chewing’s influence on secondary motor tasks, and investigate entrainment patterns of chewing and gait per established patterns of coupled oscillators. Three experiments were conducted to describe chewing patterns and to examine the effect chewing has on other motor tasks, particularly walking, in young and old adults. The first experiment used a metronome to manipulate chewing rates and measured associated gait parameters. This experiment established …

What Can The Protection And Advocacy Network Offer To Our Veterans?, David A. Boyer
What Can The Protection And Advocacy Network Offer To Our Veterans?, David A. Boyer
University of the District of Columbia Law Review
The desire to compensate veterans predates the establishment of the United States (“U.S.”). In 1636, individuals with disabilities received pensions for defending the Plymouth colony against Native Americans.1 Throughout history, this practice continued, as documented by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (“VA”).2 By 1930, President Herbert Hoover signed the Executive Order 5398, which created the Veterans Administration.3 Prior to President Hoover’s signing of that executive order, the available veteran services were divided by three separate governmental agencies: the Veterans’ Bureau, the Pensions Bureau, and the Soldiers’ Home.4 Consequently, that executive order combined all three agencies into one that concentrated …

Asian values, the aging population, and financial assistance programs for the elderly form the backdrop for this manuscript. The rationale of this manuscript is to analyze the unexpected findings from the research project “The Evaluation of Project Performance Supported by Older Persons Fund,” which indicated a connection between filial piety, family dynamics, and how family finances were spent and managed. The objective is to study this phenomenon in more detail to elucidate changes in family structures that are traditionally held as the lynchpin of Asian society. The manuscript applied two separate methodologies: Part A is a mixed methods methodology that …

Recommendations For Secondary Analysis Of Qualitative Data, Sheryl L. Chatfield
The Qualitative Report
Publications and presentations resulting from secondary analysis of qualitative research are less common than similar efforts using quantitative secondary analysis, although online availability of high-quality qualitative data continues to increase. Advantages of secondary qualitative analysis include access to sometimes hard to reach participants; challenges include identifying data that are sufficient to respond to purposes beyond those the data were initially gathered to address. In this paper I offer an overview of secondary qualitative analysis processes and provide general recommendations for researchers to consider in planning and conducting qualitative secondary analysis. I also include a select list of data sources. Well-planned …
