Examining Biblical Certainty Of Salvation Among The Elderly In Interdenominational Resident Communities, Mark Victor Triller
Examining Biblical Certainty Of Salvation Among The Elderly In Interdenominational Resident Communities, Mark Victor Triller
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
A fundamental error in urgency is made in perceiving that elderly persons have a surer and more substantive faith. One thing can be certain: those aged 80 and older have already eclipsed the life expectancy for United States residents and their time on this earth is nearing completion. The goal of this project was to provide an informed assessment of the deficit of biblical understanding among a group of elderly residents living in an interdenominational residence facility. This project reported on the spiritual gaps in biblical understanding addressed with the teaching of focused biblical truth in the areas of the …

Working With The Homeless Population: An Exploratory Study Of Graduate Social Work Student’S Confidence And Willingness, Ana Rosa Ortiz, Mariam Kiara Lowe
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Homelessness is a multilayered problem that affects hundreds of thousands of people across the United States. The social work profession cannot rest on its laurels when large numbers of individuals and families suffer due to a lack of shelter, a necessity. Historically, social work was at the vanguard of interventions against homelessness. However, over the past 30 years or so, the profession arguably has shifted its focus toward micro practice. As a result, macro issues such as poverty and homelessness have received comparatively less interest in the field. Using an exploratory design, this study examined factors associated with level of …

Nursing Practice Environment And Care Quality In Nursing Homes: A Case Study Of The Pathway To Excellence In Long-Term Care® Model, Elizabeth White, Erin Woodford, Julie Britton, Lynn W. Newberry, Christine Pabico
Group: American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)
Patient acuity and care complexity in nursing homes have increased over time, fueling demand for skilled, high-quality nursing care in this setting. RNs provide vital leadership, surveillance, and care coordination, while licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and certified nursing assistants (CNAs) deliver the majority of direct patient care in nursing homes. Extensive evidence has shown that the ability of these staff members to provide safe and effective care is largely influenced by the organizational environment in which they practice.

Perceptions Of Compassion Fatigue Amongst Master Of Social Work Students And Self-Care Strategies To Build Resilience, Daniel Wright
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Due to the unpredictable nature of the social work profession, MSW interns may find themselves unprepared when dealing with clients that have suffered through traumatic events. For those that are not adequately prepared, there can be risks of experiencing compassion fatigue. Compassion fatigue is a process by which a professional’s inner experience is negatively transformed through empathic engagement with clients’ trauma material (Killian, 2008). This research project examined possible contributing factors to compassion fatigue among MSW students and recent MSW graduates from a large public university in Southern California. The study also focused on whether self-care methods were being used, …

Pinch Span And Force: Normative Data, Requirements For Functional Tasks And Life Roles, And The Influence Of Carpometacarpal Joint Osteoarthritis, Nancy Hock
Dissertations
The three studies that form this dissertation build knowledge related to functional pinch. Study 1 provides normative data for the Baseline® 5-Position Hydraulic Pinch Meter, which may be used in clinical practice. The data collected in this study demonstrate the relationship between lateral pinch strength and age and reveal that strength decreases with age in both males and females. Through examination of the lateral pinch force produced at the 5 different pinch spans, it was found that the strongest lateral pinch strength was produced at 4-5 cm of pinch span. This information can be used by clinicians as they modify …

Savoring The Moment: A Link Between Affectivity And Depression, Ian J. Kahrilas, Jennifer L. Smith, Rebecca L. Silton, Fred B. Bryant
Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Objective: Positive affectivity (PA; disposition to experience positive moods) and negative affectivity (NA; disposition to experience negative moods) may be risk factors for depression. Low PA may impair positive emotion regulation (savoring), potentially exacerbating depression. Understanding the mechanisms in which temporal domains of savoring influence the relationship between affectivity and depression may help advance depression treatments.

Reducing The Rate Of Falls In Hospice Patients: A Fall Prevention Pilot Program, Allison Floyd
Reducing The Rate Of Falls In Hospice Patients: A Fall Prevention Pilot Program, Allison Floyd
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Background and Evidence Problem: As the population ages, there is an increase in the incidents of falls. Falls are the predominant cause of both nonfatal and fatal injuries among adults aged 65 years and older (Bergen et al., 2016). Extensive research has been conducted in fall prevention in hospitals, skilled nursing, and rehabilitation units. End-of-life care in a hospice setting presents a greater challenge in risk identification and prevention of falls. A local hospice had 457 falls between July 2018 to mid-March 2019 with a lack of consistent, detailed, fall education and documentation.

The Role Of A Nurse In The End-Of-Life Experience Of People Who Don't Have Family, Laurynn E. Leonard
The Role Of A Nurse In The End-Of-Life Experience Of People Who Don't Have Family, Laurynn E. Leonard
University Honors Theses
Childlessness is becoming more common and this has important implications for those at the end of life. Literature on hospice and care of people at the end of life is heavily focused on family. A major emphasis of end-of-life care is how to support family members, the family role in providing support, and the influence the family has on the patient. Little research, however, has been conducted to determine the difference in how hospice and palliative care can best be provided to those without a spouse, adult children, or siblings compared to those with family support. This research aims to …

“A Lot Of Stories In My Mind”: Perspectives Of Children And Elders Living With Dementia On Intergenerational Collaboration In A Participatory Music Project, Cameron Dusman
Masters Theses, 2020-current
Trends of music engagement include a shift towards presentational music culture, as well as inequitable access to participatory music-making for some populations. Meanwhile, trends of societal engagement include ageism and age-segregation. Especially for people living with dementia, stigma often prevents equitable access to creative participatory arts. This convergent, mixed-methods case study design explored participation in an intergenerational, participatory creative arts project. Participants included children from an elementary school and senior adults with dementia in a memory care neighborhood. The purpose was to explore the meaning of participation and interaction in the project from participants’ perspectives. Participants collaborated in eight sessions …

To obtain this goal, the multidisciplinary study team conducted two activities as part of a 2016 rural transportation conference: a survey of conference attendees and open discussion to elicit additional information. Results suggest the attendees felt the need for rural transit for older adults would continue to increase with public and private funding being critical issues. Respondents had similar opinions about challenges and opportunities …

Using A New Tea And Dialogue Mindfulness Practice (T&D) To Combat Community Dwelling Older Adults' Risks From Social Isolation, Kathleen Fink
Using A New Tea And Dialogue Mindfulness Practice (T&D) To Combat Community Dwelling Older Adults' Risks From Social Isolation, Kathleen Fink
Mindfulness Studies Theses
Much sound research indicates that the significant negative health impacts associated with social isolation affect increasing numbers of older adults. Thus, addressing their social isolation could be an effective means to support older adults’ wellbeing while reducing demands on limited healthcare resources. The relative effectiveness of various interventions to address older adults’ social isolation is not clear. This thesis proposes using a new relational mindfulness practice, Tea and Dialogue (T&D), that combines elements of Japanese tea ceremony and Insight Dialogue developed by Gregory Kramer. Videos of older adults engaging in variations of T&D show trusting connection indicated by nonverbal social …
