A Case For Delirium Risk Prediction Models To Aid In Triaging Resources To Those Most At Risk An Integrative Literature Review, Tammy Perttula Jun 2020

A Case For Delirium Risk Prediction Models To Aid In Triaging Resources To Those Most At Risk An Integrative Literature Review, Tammy Perttula

Nursing Masters Papers

Abstract

Delirium is a complex syndrome resulting from compounding effects of acute illness, comorbidities, and the environment. It results in adverse outcomes: elevated mortality rates, length of stay, readmissions, institutionalization, long-term cognitive changes, and diminished quality of life. The rate of iatrogenic delirium is astounding, ranging from 10%-89%. There are no curative treatments; thus, primary prevention is the key. The purpose of this literature review is to identify and critique the research for the accuracy of risk stratification and feasibility in practice. Support for interventions that prevent delirium is mounting; however, interventions are resource-intensive and often not implemented. Researchers have …

Aging, Vulnerability And Managing Type 2 Diabetes During A Pandemic, Jasmin Tahmaseb-Mcconatha, Jacqueline Magnarelli, Lauren Stricker

Psychology Faculty Publications

Older men and women have been found to be more vulnerable to negative outcomes should they contract Covid19, particularly if they also have comorbid conditions such as type 2 diabetes. Cultural, racial, ethnic, and social class differences exist in vulnerability to Covid19 and in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes. In the United States, for example, diabetes rates for minority and immigrant populations are higher than for non-Hispanic whites. During the a social health crisis, it is helpful to explore the ways that illness management and associated vulnerability influences the ways that minority elders attempt to maintain and promote their …

Weight Intention, Stigmatizing Situations, And Coping Response Among Emerging Adults Of Varying Sexual Orientation, Amanda Claire Toumayan Jun 2020

Weight Intention, Stigmatizing Situations, And Coping Response Among Emerging Adults Of Varying Sexual Orientation, Amanda Claire Toumayan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Weight stigma has been show to influence an individual's perception of and intention to change their weight regardless of objective body mass. Sexual minority individuals are more likely to experience negative health consequences associated with stigma related to their weight status, in addition to their sexuality, regardless of objective weight. While the relationship between weight intention, stigma, and coping has been examined, limited literature examines how this varies by sexuality. The present study assessed 574 emerging adults of varying sexual orientation who completed validated measures including the Stigmatizing Situations Inventory, Coping Response Inventory, and a one-item assessment of weight intention. …

Effectiveness Of Home-Based Rehabilitation Program In Minimizing Disability And Secondary Falls After A Hip Fracture: Protocol For A Randomized Controlled Trial, Anum Sadruddin Pidani, Saniya Sabzwari, Khabir Ahmad, Ata Khan, Shahryar Noordin

Department of Surgery Docs

Introduction: Hip fractures are a major health problem globally and are associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and substantial economic costs. Successful operative treatment of hip fracture patients is necessary for the optimization of post-op mobility and functional recovery of the patient. Rehabilitation after surgical stabilization of a hip fracture is crucial in order to restore pre-fracture function and to avoid long-term institutionalization. In particular ongoing exercise which targets balance can prevent up to 40% of falls. Therefore, we have designed a post-discharge home-based physical rehabilitation intervention program to minimize disability and falls in this high-risk elderly population.

The Impact Of Singing Engagement On Food Intake Of Individuals With Alzheimer’S Disease And Related Dementias: A Multi-Site, Repeated Measures Study, James Hiller

Department of Music Faculty Publications

Malnutrition among older adults with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) is a serious and long-recognized health concern. Identifying nonpharmacological means for enhancing the volume of nutrition intake is an urgent need. Researchers have explored the use of music and music therapy as nonpharmacological avenues in this regard, but most music-based studies related to food intake focus on receptive interventions wherein participants are exposed to recorded music during meal times. The purpose of the present research is to investigate whether residents with ADRD would significantly increase their volume of food intake during the midday meal immediately following 30 minutes of …

Geographic Proximity In The Community Eldercare, Lin Chen, Minzhi Ye

School of Social Work Faculty Publications

Drawing on the social-ecological framework, this chapter examines how district government policies influence the HCBS program on the macro level. We employ the geographic information system (GIS) strategy to analyze the patterns of how the District government chose the locations of service centers to expand the HCBS program for older adults. Using government archives, policy documents, and census data, we dissect the strategies for allocating public resources to optimize the HCBS program’s ability to accommodate elderly clients’ needs.

Implementing The '6th Vital Sign' Into Primary Care, Alexandria Watkins Jun 2020

Implementing The '6th Vital Sign' Into Primary Care, Alexandria Watkins

DNP and Student Works

Around the world, someone develops dementia every three seconds ("Dementia statistics | Alzheimer's disease international," 2015). Current evidence shows that in clinically healthy people, pathophysiological changes begin 10 to 15 years before symptoms of cognitive impairment (CI) are seen (Kirsebom et al., 2017, p.1622). Studies note, that in the United States the rate of undiagnosed dementia cases exceeds 50% (Eichler et al., 2015, p. 87; Grober et al., 2016, p. 1038; Wang, Xiao, Ullah, He and Bellis, 2017, p. 1). The economic impact of reacting to Alzheimer's disease and related neurocognitive disorders (ADRD) has created a statistic that indicates, "if …

Dissertations and Theses

Background: Health care–associated infections, resulting from treatment received for medical or surgical conditions in a health care setting, represent a critical public health and patient safety issue, exacting substantial medical, social, and economic costs. The costliest among the leading causes of preventable health care-associated infections is central-line associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI), to which older adults (age 65 years and older) are particularly susceptible, especially during intensive care unit (ICU) stays. A rich body of research has empirically linked the quality of the nursing practice environment (NPE) in hospitals to both positive and negative patient outcomes; yet, surprisingly few studies have …

Age-Friendly Chelmsford: A Livable Community For All Ages, Chelmsford Age-Friendly Action Plan, Jan Mutchler, Beth Rouleau, Ceara Somerville, Rebecca Mailman

Center for Social and Demographic Research on Aging Publications

Demographic patterns in Chelmsford indicate that the community will include more older residents moving forward. Projections suggest that by 2030, more than one out of three Chelmsford residents will be age 60 or older. Older residents represent an asset to the community and frequently take on disproportionate commitments to volunteer and civic engagements; capacity to take on these valued activities may be strengthened as the older population expands in number. At the same time, preparing for its aging population offers the opportunity for Chelmsford to re-evaluate its services, systems, and environmental features to ensure that they align with the needs …

Truth Telling: Exploring Sexuality In Widowed And Single Older Black Women, Margaret A. Salisu Jun 2020

Truth Telling: Exploring Sexuality In Widowed And Single Older Black Women, Margaret A. Salisu

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Interest in older adults’ sexuality is reflected in the significant growth of literature on sexuality and aging, especially in the last few decades, and in growing media interest in this topic. Clinicians, researchers, educators, journalists, policymakers, and other stakeholders continue to highlight the importance of sexuality and sexual health in the older population. However, available studies in this area pertain to older married people almost exclusively and the few available studies on widows focus exclusively on White women. To address this gap in knowledge, this study focused on older widowed and single Black women aged 65 to 75 years. Feminist …
