“Elderly” Seniors Vs. “Youthful” Seniors: Attributions And Reshaping Of Aging Expectations, Johnny Julvesano Yao Jr. Aug 2020

“Elderly” Seniors Vs. “Youthful” Seniors: Attributions And Reshaping Of Aging Expectations, Johnny Julvesano Yao Jr.

The Qualitative Report

People’s expectations of aging are shaped by various sources and experiences. These aging expectations subsequently influence a person’s overall health and well-being. I intended to gain a deeper understanding of the various sources by which Filipino older adults attribute and reshape negative and positive expectations regarding aging. I used a multiple case study (Creswell, 2013) and enlisted eight participants who are 60 years old and older in a large metropolitan area in the Philippines and interviewed them regarding their aging expectations. I analyzed the data using cross-case analysis for comparison of commonalities and differences in the events, activities, and processes …

Racial Differences In Life Expectancy Among Shelby County, Tennessee Residents, Sarah Ashley Nicole Collins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Life expectancy is a key measure in population health. Although there have been significant gains in the past decades, deep disparities still persist along racial lines. The aim of this paper is to analyze the disparate life chances of racial and ethnic minorities within Shelby County, Tennessee. OLS regression is used to investigate the association between life expectancy and various sociodemographic variables. The overall life expectancy of Shelby County is years below the national average, and the results of this project find that there are stark differences across census tracts.

Thiamine Deficiency Causes Long-Lasting Neurobehavioral Deficits In Mice, Hui Li, Hong Xu, Wen Wen, Liying Wu, Mei Xu, Jia Luo

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

Thiamine deficiency (TD) has detrimental effects on brain health and neurobehavioral development, and it is associated with many aging-related neurological disorders. To facilitate TD-related neuropsychological studies, we generated a TD mouse model by feeding a thiamine-deficient diet for 30 days, followed by re-feeding the control diet for either one week or 16 weeks as recovery treatment. We then performed neurobehavioral tests in these two cohorts: cohort of one week post TD treatment (1 wk-PTDT) and 16 weeks post TD treatment (16 wks-PTDT). The TD mice showed no significant difference from control in any tests in the 1 wk-PTDT cohort at …

Microrna Gene Expression States Underlying Individual Variation In Aging And Lifespan In Isogenic C. Elegans, Holly Kinser Aug 2020

Microrna Gene Expression States Underlying Individual Variation In Aging And Lifespan In Isogenic C. Elegans, Holly Kinser

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Average lifespan differs greatly between species, but lifespan among same-species individuals is also highly variable. While much effort has been devoted to uncovering longevity-associated traits and lifespan-extending perturbations in humans and model organisms, how differences in lifespan arise between individuals is unknown. Studies of human identical twins demonstrate that surprisingly little of the variation in lifespan between individuals can be explained by genetics and shared environment. Furthermore, even genetically identical C. elegans reared in highly homogeneous environments display a degree of variability in lifespan similar to that of outbred human populations. Thus, longevity must be determined at least in part …

OBJECTIVES: This article asks how the educational attainments of multiple family members, including parents and offspring, are associated with the cognitive health of older adults in the United States.

METHODS: We use panel data from the U.S. Health and Retirement Study (2000-2012) to examine how the education of an individual, their parent(s), and their offspring are associated with the prevalence of moderate/severe cognitive impairment and the onset of cognitive impairment among older adults using logistic regression and discrete-time event history analysis, respectively.

RESULTS: We found that when combined, only the education of the individual is inversely associated with cognitive impairment …

Understanding The Unmet Needs And Need-Driven Behaviors Of Individuals With Mild To Moderate Dementia, Morgan J. Minyo Aug 2020

Understanding The Unmet Needs And Need-Driven Behaviors Of Individuals With Mild To Moderate Dementia, Morgan J. Minyo

ETD Archive

Research on individuals with dementia (IWDs) has received increased attention in order to gain knowledge of the illness experience. Previous studies suggest many IWDs experience unmet needs as well as need-driven behaviors (NDBs) influencing IWDs outcomes of well-being. One possible interpretation of these constructs includes the potential connection between unmet needs and NDBs. In this way, NDBs are a response to some form of unmet need. The aim of this research is to assess three main objectives: (1) to increase the understanding of the illness experience by having individuals with mild to moderate dementia self-report unmet needs and NDBs, (2) …

Design For Communication, Weiying Chen Aug 2020

Design For Communication, Weiying Chen

Theses

Increasingly numbers of younger generation have settled down their new homes away from parents after years of endeavor in bigger cities in China. They leave their parents for their works and take care of their own families. Elderly care becomes a crucial problem since filial piety is a tradition and a need in Chinese culture. Because of the implementation of “One child policy” in China in such a long time, elder parents only have one child in each family, which weights much more pressure of taking care of elder parents on the “only child”. Lack of smart phones use of …

Supporting People With Dementia- Understanding Their Interactions With Mixed Reality Technologies, Shital Desai, Alethea Blackler, Deborah Fels, Arlene Astell

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Emerging technologies such as Mixed Reality Technologies (MRTs) could offer possibilities to support People with Dementia (PWD). This study examined interactions of PWD with two MRTs - HoloLens and Osmo. Ten participants (MoCA = 18 to 23, Age= 63 to 88 years) played a game of Tangram on Osmo. Six of these participants played Young Conker on HoloLens. The study found that PWD used gestural actions in the physical world more correctly than speech. Audio prompts in human voice were more correctly perceived than visual prompts. Physical affordances, embodied actions and familiarity to verbal instructions contribute to this success. Visual …

Implementing A Loneliness Assessment Tool In An Older Adult Population, Marquette Leach Aug 2020

Implementing A Loneliness Assessment Tool In An Older Adult Population, Marquette Leach

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Manuscripts

Abstract

Loneliness is a subjective experience characterized by a profound decrease in the amount and the quality of desired social connectedness. Community-dwelling older adults are particularly vulnerable to loneliness because of age-related changes such as the loss of driving privileges, loss of a spouse, living alone, socioeconomic changes caused by retirement, and a lack of access to meaningful social activities. These factors diminish an older adult’s sense of belonging, the quality of their social relationships, and the degree to which they are socially engaged. Loneliness presents a significant threat not only to the psychosocial wellbeing of older adults, but also …

Background: Family carers are crucial in preventing older people from falling at home. Their concerns for older people at risk of falling have severe implications on carers’ psychological well-being and ability to prevent falls. However, there is no validated instrument measuring this concern.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was used to examine the validity and reliability of the CFC-I. Carers looking after older people living at home completed the 17-item CFC-I and …

Ultrasound-Guided Peripheral Intravenous Catheter Insertion For Nurse Practitioners, Alvin Joseph Abad Aug 2020

Ultrasound-Guided Peripheral Intravenous Catheter Insertion For Nurse Practitioners, Alvin Joseph Abad

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Problem

Intravenous (IV) catheter insertion is a necessary skill in the emergency department (ED) for indications such as medications, fluids, and blood transfusions. Occasionally, patients present with difficult IV access (DIVA), requiring multiple insertion attempts and central venous catheter (CVC) placements. Due to the invasive nature of these procedures, patients can experience a great deal of pain and discomfort. Furthermore, although CVCs are necessary in critically ill patients that require hemodynamic monitoring or vasopressor infusions, they can cause several problems. For instance, central-line associated blood stream infections are some of the most common complications and result in increased costs and …

Rita & Larry Salva School of Nursing and Health Professions Departmental Research

Ageism is a societal concern that greatly affects the social, emotional, physical, and mental health of older adults. One way to decrease ageist attitudes and improve the treatment of older adults is to address and improve age stereotypes among young adults. Using data from students participating in an intergenerational digital-learning program, the present study investigated change in students’ stereotypes of older adults and aging. We examined change from pre- and post-scores in student attitudes toward older adults and the type of adjectives used to describe older adults. We also analyzed responses to open-ended questions about changes in perception of older …
