Using Infographics To Improve Completion Rates Of The Sepsis Protocol Bundle, Stephen Newbern
Using Infographics To Improve Completion Rates Of The Sepsis Protocol Bundle, Stephen Newbern
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Hospitals have sepsis protocols that must be implemented when a patient shows positive signs and symptoms of a septic infection. Nurses learn about sepsis in nursing school and rarely further their education beyond this basic understanding of the disease. So, when nurses fail to comply with organizational instructions outlined within a defined sepsis protocol bundle, this often leads to a progression of severe sepsis in a patient and, most likely, increased cost for the healthcare facility. Multiple sepsis protocol bundle failures negatively impact organizational ratings established by The Joint Commission for patient care and are highly associated with increased sepsis …
Re-Educating Healthcare Workers In Long-Term Care Facilities To Improve Hand Hygiene Compliance, Jennifer A. Ukeje
Re-Educating Healthcare Workers In Long-Term Care Facilities To Improve Hand Hygiene Compliance, Jennifer A. Ukeje
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Hand hygiene is one of the most significant measures for protecting nursing home residents from healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). An estimated 1.6 million to 3.8 million infections occur each year; of these infections, 32% of all healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are urinary tract infections (UTI), 15% are pneumonia (lung infection), and 14% are bloodstream infections. The high incidence of HAIs in nursing homes is due to multiple factors such as understaffing, inadequately trained staff, staff to resident ratio, lack of antibiotics stewardship, and the increasing clinical complexity of the average nursing home. In addition, most long- term care (LTC) residents are older …

The latter – including Elders – hold knowledge and experiences that are fundamental to the resurgence of Indigenous communities and need to be taken into account when developing age-friendly community plans. The concept of ethical space provides a useful framework for planners to build relationships with older Indigenous community members, …
Distinct Spatiotemporal Regulation Of The Cytoprotective Heat Shock Response In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Rosemary Nadine Plagens
Distinct Spatiotemporal Regulation Of The Cytoprotective Heat Shock Response In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Rosemary Nadine Plagens
Theses and Dissertations
Every organism studied to-date utilizes the heat shock response (HSR) to maintain protein-folding homeostasis (proteostasis) during temperature or other protein-folding stress. The HSR has been well characterized using acute heat stress (HS) in single-celled models, but less is known about how distinct cell types and tissues respond to HS. Furthermore, how metazoans respond to prolonged HS at the molecular level remains relatively unexplored. The model organism C. elegans, with its genetic tractability and distinct tissues and behaviors, has been used extensively in the field to characterize the acute HSR, but with considerable variability across labs regarding HS temperature and duration. …

Publications and Research
Given the current unprecedented multiple pandemics of COVID-19, anti-Black and anti-Asian violence, and white supremacy, we—a group of graduate students and a faculty member who hold diverse identities across disciplines, race, gender, nationality, and additional categories—came together to focus on qualitative research as an ontological, epistemological, and axiological space toward community and culture change. Specifically, we took up scholarly personal narrative, which centers postmodernism and focuses on the reality that “we see what we believe; we observe what we narrate; we transform what we reframe. ”What emerged were radical interrelated understandings of privilege, guilt, and the importance of kinship. As …
Predicting The Environmental Suitability For Onchocerciasis In Africa As An Aid To Elimination Planning, Elizabeth A. Cromwell, Ziyad Al-Aly, Et Al
Predicting The Environmental Suitability For Onchocerciasis In Africa As An Aid To Elimination Planning, Elizabeth A. Cromwell, Ziyad Al-Aly, Et Al
Open Access Publications
Recent evidence suggests that, in some foci, elimination of onchocerciasis from Africa may be feasible with mass drug administration (MDA) of ivermectin. To achieve continental elimination of transmission, mapping surveys will need to be conducted across all implementation units (IUs) for which endemicity status is currently unknown. Using boosted regression tree models with optimised hyperparameter selection, we estimated environmental suitability for onchocerciasis at the 5 × 5-km resolution across Africa. In order to classify IUs that include locations that are environmentally suitable, we used receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis to identify an optimal threshold for suitability concordant with locations where …
