Connecting Through Comments: A Thematic Analysis Of Blogging Comments, Megan N. Bell

Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal

There are millions of blogs available for readers and a lack of existing research on the interactions occurring through the comment-based dialogue between bloggers and their readers. This study examines the comments from 14 blog posts from a well-established lifestyle blog, which yielded 640 unique comments, 25 emergent themes, and three categories for thematic analysis. An inductive approach was used to identify the emergent themes from the blog comments. The results of the study suggest interactions are occurring primarily between the blogger and their readers, with minimal reader-to-reader interaction taking place.

Library Association/Organization Work

"The AACP Basic Resources for Pharmacy Education is produced as a guide for those developing or maintaining the library collections that serve colleges and schools of pharmacy. The goal of the Basic Resources list is to make recommendations of books and other works to be included in pharmacy libraries, but not all titles are required to be purchased. Each pharmacy college has its own mission and its own program(s), and so each college’s library collection must reflect that mission and support the college’s program(s). Excellent library collections are built by knowledgeable librarians and drug information specialists using their professional judgment …

Project ECHO Bibliography

INTRODUCTION: Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) is a tele-education outreach model that seeks to democratize specialty knowledge to reduce disparities and improve health outcomes. Limited utilization of endocrinologists forces many primary care providers (PCPs) to care for patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) without specialty support. Accordingly, an ECHO T1D program was developed and piloted in Florida and California. Our goal was to demonstrate the feasibility of an ECHO program focused on T1D and improve PCPs' abilities to manage patients with T1D.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Health centers (ie, spokes) were recruited into the ECHO T1D pilot through …

Acute Urinary Retention: Should We Call It A Manifestation Of Appendicitis?, Sadaf Sheikh, Umair Javed, Muhammad Akbar Baig

Department of Emergency Medicine

Acute urinary retention (AUR) is a fairly common presentation in the elderly; but interesting to be noted in a healthy young individual as a manifestation of acute appendicitis. We present a case of a 32-year gentleman with decreased urine output with mild tenderness at the supra-pubic region; which was later on, shifted to the right iliac fossa. Computed tomography of the abdomen showed acute appendicitis. Emergency physicians are challenged to recognize the uncommon presentation of acute appendicitis and need to be reminded of this common complaint as a rare presentation of it. This case also stresses on the repeated abdominal …

Special Report On Covid-19 Vaccination Trends Among Older Adults In Singapore, Micah Tan, Paulin T. Straughan, Wensi Lim, Grace Cheong

ROSA Research Briefs

This report examines trends in vaccination among older adults in Singapore to better understand why segments of older adults continue to resist vaccination against COVID-19. We find that individuals who were most likely to still be waiting to vaccinate or to not want to be vaccinated as of June 2021; are relatively older (aged 71-75), are of lower socioeconomic status (lower education levels and living in 1-3 room HDB flats), were the least likely to rely on Newspapers and Government Sources as sources of information for COVID-19 related news in November 2020, were least trusting of all sources of information, …

Meyer, Anna Kucharska-Newton, James Faulkner, Gabriel Zieff, Craig Paterson, Daniel Credeur, Kunihiro Matsushita, Timothy M. Hughes, Hirofumi Tanaka, Lee Stoner

Faculty Publications

Background: The aortic to femoral arterial stiffness gradient (af-SG) may be a novel measure of arterial health and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, but its association with CVD risk factors and CVD status, and whether or not they differ from the referent measure, carotid-femoral pulse-wave velocity (cfPWV), is not known.

Method: Accordingly, we compared the associations of the af-SG and cfPWV with (i) age and traditional CVD risk factors and (ii) CVD status. We evaluated 4183 older-aged (75.2 ± 5.0 years) men and women in the community-based Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study. cfPWV and femoral-ankle PWV (faPWV) were …

Exercise Is Key To Sustaining Metabolic Gains After Bariatric Surgery, Bruno Gualano, John P. Kirwan, Hamilton Roschel

Division of Basic Science Faculty Publications

The extent to which the benefits of bariatric surgery may be maintained by lifestyle changes after surgery is unclear. Our hypothesis is that exercise may sustain some metabolic benefits and counteract some of the adverse effects of surgery. In this review, we present findings supporting the proposition that exercise is key to improving overall health in patients after bariatric surgery.

Individual Quality And Phenology Mediate The Effect Of Radioactive Contamination On Body Temperature In Chernobyl Barn Swallows, Zbyszek Boratynski, Timothy A. Mousseau, Anders Pape Moller Jul 2021

Individual Quality And Phenology Mediate The Effect Of Radioactive Contamination On Body Temperature In Chernobyl Barn Swallows, Zbyszek Boratynski, Timothy A. Mousseau, Anders Pape Moller

Faculty Publications

Anthropogenic stressors, such as radioactive contaminants released from the Chernobyl and Fukushima Daiichi accidents, deteriorate ecological and evolutionary processes, as evidence for damaging effects of radioactive contamination on wildlife is accumulating. Yet little is known about physiological traits of animals inhabiting contaminated areas, and how those are affected by individual quality and phenology. We investigated variation in body temperature of wild barn swallows, Hirundo rustica, exposed to radioactive contamination from the Chernobyl accident in Ukraine and Belarus. We tested whether exposure to variable levels of radioactive contamination modified core body temperature of birds, and whether individual and phenological characteristics modulated …

Hearing Health Care For Individuals With Hearing Loss And Cognitive Decline: A Literature Review, Kimberly Nicholson Jul 2021

Hearing Health Care For Individuals With Hearing Loss And Cognitive Decline: A Literature Review, Kimberly Nicholson

AuD Capstone Projects - Communication Sciences and Disorders

While recent research has suggested that hearing loss is associated with cognitive decline, a direct connection between the two is not clear. With the steady increase of dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease in older adults, it is important to note that there are precautions that may be taken in order to slow the process of cognitive decline. Despite the fact that the causality between hearing loss and cognitive decline remains unclear, research in the area of treating the hearing loss has shown a positive impact on people with dementia. The aim of this literature review is to collect research regarding hearing …

Improving Medication Communication Hospital Consumer Assessment Of Healthcare Providers And Systems (Hcahps) Score, Danyel Weldon Munster Jul 2021

Improving Medication Communication Hospital Consumer Assessment Of Healthcare Providers And Systems (Hcahps) Score, Danyel Weldon Munster

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Nurses provide education on medication purposes and side effects to hospitalized patients. Patient satisfaction surveys measure this intervention with the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems Survey (HCAHPS). HCAHPS determines a portion of hospital reimbursement and star rating. By improving patient satisfaction through effective medication communication, the hospital’s star ratings and reimbursements increase. Various clinical settings utilize the teach-back method to improve patient understanding and participation in their medication education. This quality improvement project aims to improve HCAHPS medication communication-specific scores through scripted, nurse-delivered teach-back interventions. The student DNP educated the staff nurses on an adult medical-surgical unit, …

Reducing Incidence Of Contrast-Induced Acute Kidney Injury Through Nursing Education, Hilarie Rankin Jul 2021

Reducing Incidence Of Contrast-Induced Acute Kidney Injury Through Nursing Education, Hilarie Rankin

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) occurs commonly in patients following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and has been linked to increased patient morbidity, higher risk for cardiovascular mortality, and a large burden of annual healthcare costs. The implementation of evidence-based care standards by nursing staff has been shown to reduce incidence of CI-AKI. Current discrepancies in nursing care have been linked to increased incidence of CI-AKI; therefore, the need for enhanced nurse buy-in with evidence-based protocols is paramount. The primary investigator sought to increase knowledge of CI-AKI and nursing compliance with an established evidence-based protocol at a single center hospital. After …

Sepsis Initiative: Champion Series, Ashlie Barnes Jul 2021

Sepsis Initiative: Champion Series, Ashlie Barnes

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Sepsis is defined as a life-threatening organ dysfunction syndrome caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. Septic shock is defined as a subset of sepsis in which particularly profound circulatory, cellular, and metabolic abnormalities are associated with a higher risk of mortality than with sepsis alone. Each year, more than 1.7 million people are diagnosed with sepsis in the United States, and at least 270,000 Americans die. There is no confirmatory diagnostic test to diagnose sepsis. Therefore, clinical judgment based on evidence of infection and organ dysfunction is key.

Despite thousands of articles and hundreds of trials, sepsis plays …

Early Antibiotic Administration For Sepsis, Joseph Hooks Jul 2021

Early Antibiotic Administration For Sepsis, Joseph Hooks

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by the body's response to an infection causing systemic inflammation. Timely intervention with broad-spectrum antibiotics is linked to improved outcomes, reversal of organ failure, and decreased hospital length of stay. Studies show that the incidence of sepsis is increasing, while mortality related to sepsis has declined over the past several decades. Effective treatment of the source of infection is key to improving sepsis recovery and preventing septic shock. Epidemiologic studies are showing startling increases in sepsis cases with falling mortality rates. Sepsis awareness is a primary focus of quality improvement initiatives in hospitals …

Increasing Colorectal Cancer Screening Rates Through Education, Kayla Metz Jul 2021

Increasing Colorectal Cancer Screening Rates Through Education, Kayla Metz

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Adenomatous polyps cause 90% of colorectal cancer. These polyps can be identified before they become cancerous through numerous colorectal cancer screenings. There are many ways to help cover the cost of screenings or to make them no cost to patients, but the number of individuals who have ever been screened or who are current with screening recommendations remains low. This DNP project aims to provide education to providers and individuals regarding the various type of colorectal cancer screening options. A reduction in fears and improved knowledge …

Using Infographics To Improve Completion Rates Of The Sepsis Protocol Bundle, Stephen Newbern Jul 2021

Using Infographics To Improve Completion Rates Of The Sepsis Protocol Bundle, Stephen Newbern

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Hospitals have sepsis protocols that must be implemented when a patient shows positive signs and symptoms of a septic infection. Nurses learn about sepsis in nursing school and rarely further their education beyond this basic understanding of the disease. So, when nurses fail to comply with organizational instructions outlined within a defined sepsis protocol bundle, this often leads to a progression of severe sepsis in a patient and, most likely, increased cost for the healthcare facility. Multiple sepsis protocol bundle failures negatively impact organizational ratings established by The Joint Commission for patient care and are highly associated with increased sepsis …
