Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly gaining popularity as individuals, groups, and organizations discover and apply its expanding capabilities. Generative AI creates or alters various content types including text, image, audio, and video that are realistic and challenging to identify as AI-generated constructs. However, guardrails preventing malicious use of AI are easily bypassed. Numerous indications suggest that scammers are already using AI to enhance already successful scams, improving scam effectiveness, speed and credibility, while reducing detectability of scams that target older adults, who are known to be slow to adopt new technologies. Through hypothetical cases analysis of two leading scams, the …

Objective: Sociodemographic, lifestyle, and medical variables influence total testosterone (T) and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) concentrations. The relationship between these factors and "free" T remains unclear. We examined 21 sociodemographic, lifestyle, and medical predictors influencing calculated free T (cFT) in community-dwelling men across ages.

Design: This is a cross-sectional analysis in 20 631 participants in the Androgens in Men Study.

Methods: Individual participant data (IPD) were provided by 9 cohorts. Total T was determined using mass spectrometry, SHBG using immunoassays, and cFT using the Vermeulen formula. Associations were analyzed using 2-stage random effects IPD meta-analyses.

Results: Cohort median ages ranged …

Intra-Professional Collaborative Practice Among Nurses, Registered Nurses' Association Of Ontario

General Submissions: Clinical Settings Materials

The purpose of this best practice guideline (BPG) is to strengthen collaborative practice among nurses, because effective collaborative practice is essential for working in health-care organizations.

In this guideline, there is a focus on collaborative practice amongst three types of nursing professionals:

  • registered nurse (RN),
  • registered practical nurse (RPN)
  • nurse practitioner (NP)

The guideline explores what fosters healthy work environments for these groups of nurses (being aware that collaboration must align with the needs of the patient or client).

Waking Up Before We Die: Aging And Spirituality, Marcelline Hutton Oct 2024

Waking Up Before We Die: Aging And Spirituality, Marcelline Hutton

Zea E-Books Collection

In retirement, I have more time for prayer and reflection, to rest in the Lord, and hence to have my spirit renewed. We choose how we interpret our situations. Positive, spiritual aging ideas enhance our sense of well-being. Of course, the loss of loved ones decreases our sense of self-worth at times, but the Spirit can renew us. As Genesis reminds us, God was still working in the lives of Sarah and Abraham in old age, and they can serve as models for us. Indeed, Sarah laughed at the angels and shows us how humor exists even as we age. …

Subjective well-being (SWB) is often described as being U-shaped over adulthood, declining to a midlife slump and then improving thereafter. Improved SWB in later adulthood has been considered a paradox given age-related declines in health and social losses. While SWB has mostly been studied in high-income countries, it remains largely unexplored in rural subsistence populations lacking formal institutions that reliably promote social welfare. Here, we evaluate the age profile of SWB among three small-scale subsistence societies (n = 468; study 1), forest users from 23 low-income countries (n = 6987; study 2), and Tsimane’ horticulturalists (n = …

Factors Associated With Dementia-Related Stigma In British Adolescents, Esra Hassan, Ben Hicks, Naji Tabet, Nicolas Farina Oct 2024

Factors Associated With Dementia-Related Stigma In British Adolescents, Esra Hassan, Ben Hicks, Naji Tabet, Nicolas Farina

Peninsula Medical School

Background: Dementia-related stigma is a prominent barrier for people living with dementia, leading to poor well-being and social isolation. Adolescents are an under-researched group in society that may already have experience of dementia and are more susceptible to attitudinal change which makes them ideal targets for anti-stigma initiatives outlined by public health policy. For the development of evidence-based anti-stigma initiatives in adolescents, it is important to understand which socio-demographic groups are most likely to develop stigmatising attitudes and why. This study aims to identify factors of dementia-related stigma in adolescents. Methods: A total of 1,044 adolescents (aged 11–18 years) from …

Investigators in neuroscience have turned to Big Data to address replication and reliability issues by increasing sample size. These efforts unveil new questions about how to integrate data across distinct sources and instruments. The goal of this study was to link scores across common auditory verbal learning tasks (AVLTs). This international secondary analysis aggregated multisite raw data for AVLTs across 53 studies totaling 10,505 individuals. Using the ComBat-GAM algorithm, we isolated and removed the component of memory scores associated with site effects while preserving instrumental effects. After adjustment, a continuous item response theory model used multiple memory items of varying …

Exploring The Impact Of Lighting Sources On Walking Behavior In Obstructed Walkways Among Older Adults, Yue Luo, Yuhao Chen, Gaojian Huang, Boyi Hu

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The pandemic has reinforced older adults' reliance on their homes and the concept of “aging in place”. Changes like reduced physical strength and cognitive deficit, however, have heightened the challenge of simple tasks like obstacle crossing among older adults, let alone when older adults cannot perceive the surroundings well during the nighttime. The study is, therefore, to evaluate the impact of lighting on older adults' obstacle-crossing behavior during the nighttime. Twenty-seven older adults (81 ± 6 yrs., 171 ± 12 cm, 75 ± 20 kg, 14 females) were recruited. Participants were asked to cross over the obstacle in a dark …

Inquiries into properties of brain structure and function have progressed due to developments in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). To sustain progress in investigating and quantifying neuroanatomical details in vivo, the reliability and validity of brain measurements are paramount. Quality control (QC) is a set of procedures for mitigating errors and ensuring the validity and reliability of brain measurements. Despite its importance, there is little guidance on best QC practices and reporting procedures. The study of hippocampal subfields in vivo is a critical case for QC because of their small size, inter-dependent boundary definitions, and common artifacts in the MRI data …

Intergenerational Transmission Of Wisdom Through Family Narratives: A Qualitative Analysis Of Emerging Adults' Perspective, Emilia Mazurek

The Qualitative Report

Family narratives are a medium for the intergenerational transmission of life wisdom, which may influence recipient’s beliefs system and behaviors. Despite a growing body of knowledge on wisdom, emerging adults remain insufficiently researched as to what wisdom from their perspective was conveyed to them through stories. The aim was to identify what wisdom emerging adults perceive in the narratives told them by their parents about themselves. The study was conducted in Poland. Convenience sampling was used. 42 emerging adults (33 female, 8 male, 1 non-binary) ranging from 19 to 22 years participated in the study. Participants were asked to write …

An Integrated Review: Faith Community Nurse Transitional Care Model Health Ministry, Youn Kyeong Cummings Oct 2024

An Integrated Review: Faith Community Nurse Transitional Care Model Health Ministry, Youn Kyeong Cummings

DNP Qualifying Manuscripts

The hospital readmission rate is highest among underserved communities, and providing a continuum of care to these populations can yield a greater reduction in the readmission rate. Church and faith-based clinics often help underserved communities, and equipping them with the transitional care model (TCM) and an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with specialized training as a Faith Community Nurse (FCN) can implement whole-person care, improve the health of the community, and reduce hospital readmission.

California has a 14.5% readmission rate. There is uncertainty surrounding the presence of transitional care departments in California's community hospitals, with some of these facilities offering …
