Leadership Connection
Session presented on Saturday, September 17, 2016.
The 2010 Institute of Medicine report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, calls for health organizations, including nursing organizations and nursing schools, to “provide nurses greater opportunities to gain leadership skills and put them into practice.” In an effort to prepare the next generation of nurse leaders, the International Leadership Institute (ILI) at Sigma Theta Tau International offers leadership development for academic and clinical nurse leaders, who wish to increase their leadership expertise. Often times, faculty members are promoted into leadership positions without adequate preparation. To facilitate this transition, the ILI …

Leadership Development Programs: Benefits, Outcomes, And Personal Transformations, Susan C. Winters, Janet E. Jackson, Catherine J. Mohammed
Leadership Connection
Session presented on Monday, September 19, 2016: The development of nursing leaders who can steer and re-invent a rapidly-changing and complex health care environment is crucial for the profession and the nation's health. Indeed, the nursing profession has been tasked with the achievement of recommendations and increased engagement in the healthcare of the country. A focus on intentional leadership growth and development is found in three recommendations of the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) report The Future of Nursing (IOM, 2010; 2015). Development of leadership skills, however, is an on-going process that requires self-reflection, opportunities for growth, and planning (Porter-O'Grady & …

Leadership Connection
Session presented on Sunday, September 18, 2016:
The purpose of this study was to explore perceptions of patients, who have congestive heart failure and who had a recent admission to the acute care setting, regarding factors that influenced their readmissions to the acute care setting, as well as to identify if there are areas of teaching that needed to be increased in emphasis or added to patient education to decrease future readmissions. The sample consisted of seven patients who had a readmission to the acute care setting and had a diagnosis of acute congestive heart failure. This qualitative study utilized …

Purpose Statement: The University of Michigan-Flint Department of Nursing (UM-Flint DON) is providing and evaluating Academic Partnerships with Primary Care Clinics to create designated clinical training preceptorships for nurse practitioner (NP) students. The UM-Flint DON has experienced the same challenges to APRN clinical education that has been noted nationwide: an increase in enrollment in Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) NP programs, a lack of available clinical sites with qualified preceptors, and competition for sites with other educational programs (Fitzgerald, Kantrowitz-Gordon, Katz & Hirsh, 2012). The creation …

A Model For Falls With Major Injury In Nursing Home Residents, Soon Young Ha, Patricia Vermeersch
Leadership Connection
Session presented on Sunday, September 18, 2016:
Background: The combination of more elderly living longer and needing more supportive care means the absolute proportion of older adults in nursing homes is likely to rise. Nursing home residents are more likely to fall as compared to community dwelling older adults. Consequently, the absolute number of falls among nursing home residents will also increase with a concurrent rise in falls with major injury 4: bone fractures, joint dislocations, closed head injuries with altered consciousness, and/or subdural hematoma. 5 The increased falls with major injury will negatively impact the physical and psychological health …

End Of Life In African American Older Adults: An Integrative Literature Review, Karen O. Moss, Karen M. Rose
Leadership Connection
Session presented on Friday, September 26, 2014:
End-of-life care in the United States is described as deficient and fragmented. Minority populations engage in end-of-life planning less frequently than Caucasians. African Americans represent the second largest minority group in the United States with its older adult population projected to increase by 114% by 2030. The Patient-Self Determination Act of 1990 requires Medicare and Medicaid funded healthcare organizations to empower patients to refuse or accept medical care and execute advance directives. The Study to Understand Prognoses and Preferences for Outcomes and Risks of Treatments (SUPPORT) confirmed substantial shortcomings of healthcare for seriously …
Efficacy Of A Home-Based Neurocognitive Remediation Program In Adults With Hiv, Shameka C. Humphrey
Efficacy Of A Home-Based Neurocognitive Remediation Program In Adults With Hiv, Shameka C. Humphrey
Leadership Connection
Session presented on Thursday, September 25, 2014:
Despite the life-sustaining effects of Combination Antiretroviral Therapy (cART), adults with HIV continue to experience neurocognitive impairments. In fact, over half of adults with HIV experience HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorders (HAND). As neurocognitive impairments continue to emerge among adults with HIV, more private settings such as the home may facilitate greater use of neurocognitive remediation therapies such as speed of processing training to enhance neurocognitive and everyday functioning. The efficacy of a home-based speed of processing training was examined in middle-aged and older adults with HIV (i.e., age 40+).

Opioid Use Disorder Education For Student Nurse Practitioner, Priscilla L. Hussain
Opioid Use Disorder Education For Student Nurse Practitioner, Priscilla L. Hussain
Group: Nebraska Methodist College
Expansion of opioid use disorder (OUD) care is direly required of United States, and student nurse practitioners (NPs) are capable of assessing and addressing OUD in their clin- ical settings. However, academic programs for student medical doctors and NPs lack ad- equate training for such large-scale epidemic. This capstone project recruited 7 student NPs to participate in an interactive learning module prepared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s): “Module 5: Assessing and Addressing Opioid Use Disorderâ€. Advance Directive Protocol In The Primary Care Setting, Alexei Boettcher
Advance Directive Protocol In The Primary Care Setting, Alexei Boettcher
Group: Nebraska Methodist College
Background and Review of Literature: Advance directives (AD) are documents that offer patients a way to avoid unwanted care in the event of a serious illness or incapacity. Studies demonstrate the care patients receive at the end-of-life is not often consistent with their preferences, as a result of suboptimal communication between the patient and provider as well as documentation of health care proxies and treatment preferences (Isaac & Curtis, 2016). The lack of a current formal protocol used by primary care providers regarding ADs, particularly towards the young adult patient population, resulting in insufficient discussions of patients’ wishes regarding end-of-life …

A Need For Nurses, Danielle Krohn, Hilary Applequist
Group: Nebraska Methodist College
Nurse residency programs were designed with the intent of assisting nurses with the transition into a new area of practice. The purpose of this project was to complete a community needs assessment to determine whether the community nursing home would be interested in implementing a nurse residency program within the next year. The assessment was completed with surveys distributed to various nursing home stakeholders. Survey results concluded that the current nurse orientation process, nurse recruitment, and nurse turnover rates were important items …

The purpose of this study was to cultivate a process to identify early signs of depression and promptly initiate referrals within the community. Intervention: The PHQ-2 screening tool was implemented to address the current health needs of an underserved population on the mobile health unit. Individuals served on the mobile health …
