Geopolitics In Africa’S Great Lakes Region, Gilbert M. Khadiagala May 2025

Geopolitics In Africa’S Great Lakes Region, Gilbert M. Khadiagala

Journal of African Policy Studies

This paper examines the civil war in the Congo since the late 1990s through regional and national lenses. It contends that Congo's problems are not unique; instead, they reflect a larger phenomenon of the lack of synergy between geography and politics in the Great Lakes region. The stabilization of power in geographical spaces is the puzzle of building institutions not just in the Congo, but also among its equally weak neighbors.

Responsibility To The Land: Perspectives Of Farmers On Climate Change And Land Transition, Meira A. Smit May 2025

Responsibility To The Land: Perspectives Of Farmers On Climate Change And Land Transition, Meira A. Smit

Environmental Studies Honors Projects

Agriculture is a defining aspect of Minnesota and Wisconsin’s culture and identity, characterized by family farms, rolling hills blanketed with crops, and cows. Interspersed are small scale diversified farms and a growing number of emerging and young farmers. Another cultural mainstay is talking about weather, a ubiquitous conversation of Midwesterners. As weather events such as erratic rainfall, drought, and pest pressure become both more common and volatile, and long-term weather patterns shift from “normal”, it is important to ask farmers what they think about it. Adapting to changes and planning for resilience are what farmers have always done, yet increasing …

Faculty Research 2025

Patients with common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) who develop noninfectious complications (NIC) have worse clinical outcomes than those with infections only (INF). While gut microbiome aberrations have been linked to NIC, reductionist animal models that accurately recapitulate CVID are lacking. Our aim in this study was to uncover potential microbiome roles in the development of NIC in CVID. We performed whole-genome shotgun sequencing on fecal samples from CVID patients with NIC, INF, and their household controls. We also performed fecal microbiota transplants from CVID patients to germ-free mice. We found potentially pathogenic microbes

Community Music Among Brazilian Culture: A Community Engagement Project, Ayla Tedeschi May 2025

Community Music Among Brazilian Culture: A Community Engagement Project, Ayla Tedeschi

Expressive Therapies Theses

Although community music eludes a fixed definition due to its fluid and context-dependent nature, its effects are found to be beneficial throughout the world. An example of this is seen among native and emigrant Brazilians where music is part of the individual, community, and culture. This thesis explores the therapeutic value of community music among current residents of Brazil and Brazilians that have emigrated to the United States. Through a community engagement project, this research hypothesized that although music may serve different purposes occasionally, the primary function-to create community and culture-remains the same. Participation in two key community music making …

Fields Under The Hoof: Characterizing Plant Cultivation Of Agropastoralists In Bronze And Iron Age Inner Asia (3000 Bce - 1000 Ce), Melissa Ritchey

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines the agropastoral practices in the Eurasian landmass between the 3rd millennium BCE to 1st millennium CE, focusing on characterizing how communities living in mountainous Inner Asia incorporated plant cultivation into their mobile agropastoralist lifestyle. I examine macrobotanical remains from key archaeological sites along the routes of the trans-Eurasian exchange of domesticated plants and animals and various technologies during the Bronze and Iron Ages. These sites include Chap, Kyrgyzstan, Tasbas, Kazakhstan, and Dingdong, Piyang, Jiweng, Kaerdong, and Bangga, located in Tibet. I use stable carbon and nitrogen isotope values of archaeological plant remains and macrobotanical assemblages to assess …

Mechanisms Of Protective Humoral Immunity And Pathogenesis In Alphavirus Infection, Natasha Monir Kafai May 2025

Mechanisms Of Protective Humoral Immunity And Pathogenesis In Alphavirus Infection, Natasha Monir Kafai

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Alphaviruses are enveloped, mosquito-transmitted, positive-sense RNA viruses of the Togaviridae family classified into Old and New World groups based on endemic regions and human disease characteristics. Old World alphaviruses, including chikungunya virus preferentially cause arthritogenic disease, whereas New World viruses like Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV), Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV), and Western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV) can cause neurological disease. Since the 1920s, VEEV has been responsible for major periodic outbreaks affecting hundreds of thousands of humans and equines in South and Central America. Expansion of mosquito vectors raises concern for possible VEEV reemergence. In addition, VEEV is a …

Dust To Dream, Brenda Meloto De Oliveira May 2025

Dust To Dream, Brenda Meloto De Oliveira

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

This thesis explores the design and implementation of a holistic housing initiative to address the needs of economically disadvantaged populations in Sertão do Moxotó, Pernambuco. Situated in an arid region with limited resources, the project provides not only shelter but also community spaces, educational opportunities, and essential services to improve local living standards.

The region’s history of resilience is reflected in its vernacular architecture, which uses materials like adobe, rammed earth, and thatch—offering sustainable, climate-adapted solutions. Yet, basic amenities remain out of reach for many. Community-led initiatives, non-monetary systems, and vocational training help bridge these gaps and empower individuals to …

The Legacy Of Auguste Franchomme: Pedagogical Analysis And Performance Practice For The “Twelve Caprices Opus 7 For Cello Solo”, Zi-Yun Luo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This written document focuses on a personal pedagogical analysis of the Twelve Caprices composed by the French cellist and pedagogue, Auguste Franchomme. His works have served as significant cello studies for young cellists, comparable in importance to the Twelve Caprices by Carlo Alfredo Piatti and the High School of Cello Playing by David Popper. Each of these caprices is written in different key signatures, tempi, include a variety of bowing styles and techniques, express melodies over a wide range of the cello register, and present unique and ubiquitous issues that cellists may encounter in the canon of cello literature.

Recent U.S. Government Policy Literature On Critical And Strategic Minerals, Bert Chapman May 2025

Recent U.S. Government Policy Literature On Critical And Strategic Minerals, Bert Chapman

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Critical and strategic minerals have become increasingly important in U.S. government civilian and military policymaking in recent years. This is demonstrated by the heavy use of such minerals in many critical civilian and military infrastructures. This work will discuss how this subject has been addressed in laws, presidential documents, and works by government agencies along with congressional oversight committees and support agencies. It will stress how the United States is heavily dependent on strategic minerals from adversarial foreign countries such as China and will examine U.S. efforts to increase its ability to produce such materials in the United States by …

Generational Remigration Of The Latvian Diaspora: Tracing The Confluence Of Cultural Identity And Economic Opportunity, Elizabeth L. Curiskis May 2025

Generational Remigration Of The Latvian Diaspora: Tracing The Confluence Of Cultural Identity And Economic Opportunity, Elizabeth L. Curiskis

Geography Honors Projects

At just 1.85 million, Latvia’s current population is declining at one of the fastest rates in Europe. This situation is prompting the Latvian government to introduce policies seeking economic, political, educational, and cultural engagement with the country’s diaspora with the hope that some of the approximately 390,000 emigrants and their descendants living abroad will return to live in Latvia. This paper asks whether these government initiatives are successful in their goal of influencing Latvian diaspora members to remigrate, and if the policies acknowledge and reconcile generational differences in the diaspora’s attitudes towards cultural involvement and eventual remigration. Through surveys and …

Seas Of Lemongrass: A Political Ecology Perspective On Urban Agriculture And Immigrant Food Security In The Twin Cities, Minnesota, Reece V. Mckee May 2025

Seas Of Lemongrass: A Political Ecology Perspective On Urban Agriculture And Immigrant Food Security In The Twin Cities, Minnesota, Reece V. Mckee

Geography Honors Projects

Urban agriculture (UA) frequently employs organic, polycultural and agroecological techniques in order to farm suboptimal urban land with limited resources. However, less scholarly attention has been paid to its actual impacts on the eating patterns of marginalized groups like immigrants, which is important to study for political debates about the expansion and purpose of UA. In this study, I examined how different forms of UA affect food security and dietary diversity for immigrants in the Twin Cities, Minnesota. Using dietary surveys, food access questionnaires, and informal conversations, I determined that a simplistic definition of food security focused only on overall …

Vienna In The New Century: From Public Housing Haven To Neoliberalized Mega Projects, Connery R. Ritter May 2025

Vienna In The New Century: From Public Housing Haven To Neoliberalized Mega Projects, Connery R. Ritter

Geography Honors Projects

While Vienna is often presented as a utopia for social sustainability, the urban developments after the turn of the century have revealed the variegated nature of Neoliberalization. Since the fall of the USSR, Vienna has privatized municipal bodies and engaged with financialized urban development projects. While this Neoliberalized urban governance approach has met with resistance, the resistance ironically has also enabled the city to capitalize on its social-welfarist past. Vienna nowadays brands itself as a sustainable and livable city for corporations, which leads to land assetization and new economic segregation.

“We All Have Our Boulders To Pass, And This Was One Of Mine”: Ethnoculturally Diverse High-School-Aged Youth And Their Reclamation Of Nature, Andrew T. Turchon May 2025

“We All Have Our Boulders To Pass, And This Was One Of Mine”: Ethnoculturally Diverse High-School-Aged Youth And Their Reclamation Of Nature, Andrew T. Turchon

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

This qualitative, ethnographic, youth-centered study explored how ethnoculturally diverse urban high-school-aged youth express their relationships to nature. Participatory and youth-centered methodologies and data sources, including Photovoice, photo-elicitation interviews, and classroom artifacts, centered the voices of a diverse group of urban youth and their experiences in local forest reservations. Diverse urban youth are typically marginalized from environmental education, place-based learning, and representation in outdoor-related research. Therefore, it is critical that educational researchers include the voices of these students in conversations about nature to broaden the sociocultural framework around what “nature” is, how it is experienced, and by whom. This theoretical framework …

Examining The Impact Of Reentry Programs On The Employability Of African American Ex-Offenders Entering The Workforce In The State Of Michigan, Lawrence Gene Caldwell May 2025

Examining The Impact Of Reentry Programs On The Employability Of African American Ex-Offenders Entering The Workforce In The State Of Michigan, Lawrence Gene Caldwell

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

African American ex-offenders in Michigan have faced numerous challenges when trying to secure employment after incarceration. Despite the well-documented difficulties of reintegration, their personal experiences and perceptions of these obstacles remain largely unexplored. Successful reintegration has required individuals to break free from the behaviors and social patterns reinforced during their time in prisons. This generic qualitative study examined the role of reentry programs in addressing these challenges and emphasizes the need to reassess current criminal justice practices to better support formerly incarcerated individuals. This generic qualitative study focused on the employment struggles faced by African American ex-offenders and the broader …

Optimal Placement Of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Using Modified Artificial Hummingbird Algorithm In An Electric Grid, Sravan Kumar Dumpeti May 2025

Optimal Placement Of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Using Modified Artificial Hummingbird Algorithm In An Electric Grid, Sravan Kumar Dumpeti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The rapid adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs) necessitates to optimize the grid through strategic placement of Electric Vehicle Charging Station (EVCS). Conventional algorithms such as Greywolf Optimization Algorithm and Particle Swarm Optimization have been used for the placement of EVCS, but they have difficulties in dealing with dynamic and complex environments. With this background, this thesis proposes a Modified Artificial Hummingbird Algorithm (MAHA) for optimal placement of EVCS in the IEEE 9-bus, 57-bus, and 118-bus systems. The first approach uses a single objective function that minimizes transmission losses due to EV charging, while the second approach considers a multi-objective function …

Big-Box Stores To Refuge: Transforming Commercial Spaces Into Modular Emergency Shelters, Garrett Byrne May 2025

Big-Box Stores To Refuge: Transforming Commercial Spaces Into Modular Emergency Shelters, Garrett Byrne

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

As sea levels rise and climate disasters become more prevalent, this will displace residents. The importance of a scalable adaptable emergency shelter solution is vital. By proposing an renovation of existing big-box warehouses, such as Walmart, into refuge centers that can accommodate large number of displaced individuals. These refuge centers with their elevated platforms, strategic geographic distribution, and proximity to their flood zones, were well suited for elevated, climate resilient shelters. The design uses modular construction systems that uses kit-of-part beds that can be deployed for personal spaces and modules, enabling rapid assembly, flexible layouts, and efficient transportation. Elevated platforms …

Spatial Variations In Women's Share Of The Manufacturing Labor Force In Tennessee: A Statistical Analysis, Ted Klimasewski May 2025

Spatial Variations In Women's Share Of The Manufacturing Labor Force In Tennessee: A Statistical Analysis, Ted Klimasewski

The Geographical Bulletin

A neglected facet of the geographic literature is the role of women employed in the labor force. Women make up a significant share of the labor force, and comprise approximately a third of the manufacturing employment in the United States during 1970. But the relative magnitude of female employment in manufacturing varies throughout the United States, and in some areas of the South, women make up more than half of the manufacturing employment. The purpose of this study is to introduce the manufactural aspect of women's role in the labor force by (1) examining the spatial variation in women's share …

Spatial Ordering In Social Area Typology, Larry B. Bubacz May 2025

Spatial Ordering In Social Area Typology, Larry B. Bubacz

The Geographical Bulletin

The primary purpose of this paper is to provide tentative evaluation of the general applicability of two statistics, the weighted mean areal center and standard distance, to the question of spatial ordering in social area analysis. More specifically, does the use of these statistics identify whether social phenomena tends to conform to either a concentric (doughnut) ring or a sector (pie-shaped) pattern? The weighted mean areal center is defined as the "balancing point" or "center of gravity" for a population distributed in twodimensions (x-y coordinates) which is comparable to the arithmetic mean of the conventional linear frequency distribution.' The descriptive …

Systems Approach In Physical Geography, Hubert B. Stroud May 2025

Systems Approach In Physical Geography, Hubert B. Stroud

The Geographical Bulletin

The concept of a system is not new and the emergence of systems analysis in academia has caused controversy over the significance of this approach as a viable means of scientific analysis. Some geography scholars feel that the use of systems analysis would definitely put us on the research frontier,1 while others view the term " systems" as nothing more than jargon. Nevertheless, the simplest definition for system is " a set of interrelated elements." The demand for the systems approach arose because scholars in a number of disciplines recognized in their own research that individual components of a problem …

The American State Capital, A Twentieth Century Growth Pole, Frederick A. Hirsch May 2025

The American State Capital, A Twentieth Century Growth Pole, Frederick A. Hirsch

The Geographical Bulletin

A fall-out of our avoidance of " capes and bays" geography has been a " benign neglect" of political capitals. In addition to the mental block arising from past tedious memorizations of their existence has been a second factor of sparseness of cases. The United States with fifty state capitals has more than the number of capitals in most of the other federally organized sovereignties. The scientifically oriented among academic geographers have preferred to analyze phenomena in greater abundance such as central places or stream beds.

Utilization Of Plat Books For Determination Of The Rural-Urban Fringe, Douglas J. Kocher May 2025

Utilization Of Plat Books For Determination Of The Rural-Urban Fringe, Douglas J. Kocher

The Geographical Bulletin

This paper has as its purpose the identification of the Valparaiso, Indiana rural-urban fringe' through an analysis of property boundary changes as evidence in county plat books. It is designed to test two hypotheses dealing with the nature of Valparaiso expansion and subdivision of land : one, greater urban expansion of Valparaiso will tend to be linear in nature and in the direction of major industrial areas and population centers; and two, the subdivision of land will show a marked increase with time as the urban area expands.

City Structure And City Change: A System Analysis Approach, A. Y. Abu-Ayyash May 2025

City Structure And City Change: A System Analysis Approach, A. Y. Abu-Ayyash

The Geographical Bulletin

The structure of the city and the transformation processes which generate changes in its structure have fascinated intellectuals from many disciplines. Sociologists are mainly concerned with the social structure and the demographic characteristics of the inhabitants of the city as a base for understanding its structure. Economists are concerned with economic forces in terms of locational competition as the main reasons for the changing structure of the city. Engineers are concerned with the architecture of the city.

Editor's Comments, James W. Gallagher

The Geographical Bulletin

With the recent proliferation of periodicals which cater to geographers, it is probably a satisfaction for an editor to know that his periodical is still in business. At the recent annual meeting of Gamma Theta Upsilon the intent was clear on the part of the Executive Committee to stay in business. That is gratifying. But most satisfaction comes with the publication of this volume. You really are never aware of the breadth and depth of the articles offered until an index is made. A review of the index to volumes 1-6 show a considerable range of topics for our readers …
