What Is Lost When Time Is Saved: Drawing In Collaboration With The Urban Periphery, Carmen Ribaudo Aug 2025

What Is Lost When Time Is Saved: Drawing In Collaboration With The Urban Periphery, Carmen Ribaudo

MFA in Visual Art

I pay attention to the overlooked spaces where land and industry meet, prompting me to wonder what can be gleaned in the oily and cracked urban periphery. With a focus on my hometown St. Louis, this industrial city is my subject matter. And so, I draw in a neighborhood bisected by a highway. I animate with sand near the river confluence on land preserved after a historic flood. I make my own bricks in this Brick City, setting up in locations of former terra cotta clay mines. I sit in the tension of what author Michael Martone calls the “midwestern …

Accurate And Efficient Orbit Probability Approximation Framework For Space Situational Awareness, Pugazhenthi Sivasankar Aug 2025

Accurate And Efficient Orbit Probability Approximation Framework For Space Situational Awareness, Pugazhenthi Sivasankar

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024

Uncertainty Propagation in astrodynamics has gained importance in space situational awareness (SSA) problems such as space debris tracking, collision avoidance, and Cislunar operations. In this dissertation, the technique of Orbit Probability Approximation (OPA) is developed. OPA propagates orbital uncertainty using Liouville’s theorem with different functional approximations. First, OPA is formulated with Chebyshev polynomials to propagate the uncertainty on a geocentric planar orbit problem and then validated using two sources of satellite data: GRACE navigation data from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) database, and FireOPAL ground-based observer provided by Lockheed Martin. In this validation process, OPA propagates uncertainty without using any …

The book engages the concept of disturbance to point out the circular and spiraling dynamics between hydrological processes and technopolitical and economic practices. Disturbance denotes a specific type of long-term dynamic between human attempts …

Understanding The Role Of Drug Offenses And The Death Penalty In Iran, Cyrus Zarganj Aug 2025

Understanding The Role Of Drug Offenses And The Death Penalty In Iran, Cyrus Zarganj

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Since the 1979 revolution, the Islamic Republic of Iran has been governed by Islamic laws devised by Shia Muslim clerics, significantly influencing the nation's legal framework in both criminal and civil contexts. The death penalty in Iran covers a broad spectrum of offenses, many of which would not be considered capital crimes or even crimes globally. This extensive application of the death penalty is an instrument of social control during periods of political tension, indicating a direct relationship between the regime's stability and the enforcement of extreme punitive measures. Despite some reduction in the visibility of executions due to international …

The Effects Of Electoral Outcomes And Cross-Party Relationships On Affective Polarization, Jenna Pedersen Aug 2025

The Effects Of Electoral Outcomes And Cross-Party Relationships On Affective Polarization, Jenna Pedersen

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores several under-studied aspects of affective polarization through four chapters. The first chapter discusses the history of polarization research and the measurement challenges facing polarization scholars. The second chapter analyzes how electoral outcomes differentially influence Democrats' and Republicans' inparty, outparty, and general affect. I find that winning elections affects both outparty and inparty attitudes, but the size and direction of these effects varies by party: electoral success reduces Republicans' inparty affect, but for Democrats success reduces outparty affect. The third and fourth chapters contain survey experiment data measuring the effects of cross-partisan relationships. I find that positive relationships …

Small Satellite Conference

Optical Earth Observation (EO) sensors can be significantly affected by atmospheric conditions, particularly cloud cover, which can obscure their images and reduce the information content in the final image. It is estimated that over 50% of the Earth’s surface is covered by clouds at any given moment. As a result, up to half of the data captured by visible EO satellite imagers is rendered unusable for most applications. Transmitting this unusable data, even in a compressed form, unnecessarily utilises valuable communications downlink bandwidth. This is particularly acute for hyperspectral EO missions, where the tens to hundreds of bands per acquisition …

Slalom: A Mission Concept For Autonomous Very Low Lunar Orbit Operations, Jeffrey S. Parker, Bradley Cheetham, Charles Cain, Ethan Kayser

Small Satellite Conference

A Sustained Low-Altitude Lunar Orbital Mission (SLALOM) maintains an orbital path very close to the surface of the Moon: passing within 1–5 kilometers of topographical peaks and maintaining an average altitude under 10 kilometers. This extremely low orbit enables high-resolution observations of the Moon but requires a new class of autonomous navigation and stationkeeping. The au-tonomous software system, ALPINE (Auto-maneuver Location Processor using Integrated Navigation Estimates), fuses real-time optical navigation data with one-way and cross-link radiometric tracking data to maintain continuous and autonomous custody of the spacecraft. This paper examines a stationkeeping strategy that maximizes surface coverage of desirable locations …

Female Sexual Offenders: An Underrecognized, Underreported, And Underresearched Population, Chelsea H. Henry Aug 2025

Female Sexual Offenders: An Underrecognized, Underreported, And Underresearched Population, Chelsea H. Henry

Master of Arts in Human Services

This paper explored female sexual offenders and described how their crimes are underrecognized, underreported, and underresearched. Women commit part of all sexual crimes against children, although prevalence rates are hotly debated. Research demonstrates that female offenders are often their victims' mothers, caregivers, or other relatives. This societal role leads to difficulty in recognizing that this type of abuse exists. Media portrayals often cast female offenders in the role of victims themselves or cast the abuse in a positive light. Females are often the producers of online child sex abuse material, and more research is needed on this understudied topic as …
