No. 44: Tracking Translocality: Food Remittance Narratives In The Africa-Gulf Migration Corridor, Bernard Owusu, Jonathan Crush Aug 2025

No. 44: Tracking Translocality: Food Remittance Narratives In The Africa-Gulf Migration Corridor, Bernard Owusu, Jonathan Crush

Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network

This paper explores the overlooked practice of food-related remittances in the Ghana-Qatar migration corridor, emphasizing their social, emotional, and cultural significance within translocal households. While cash remittances are widely studied, food remitting remains under-researched despite its critical role in sustaining family ties and addressing food insecurity. Drawing on a mixed-methods study involving household surveys in Ghana and interviews with migrants in Qatar, the paper employs a tripartite conceptual framework incorporating gifting, caregiving, and moral economy to analyze migrant remittance narratives. The paper shows that remitting practices are shaped by cultural norms, kinship obligations, and emotional care, often at significant personal …

Class A Biosolids Production Using Conventional And Low-Cost, Low-Tech Processes At Small Water Resource Recovery Facilities: A Multidimensional Sustainability Assessment, Janna Brown, Robert Handler, Eric Seagren, Jennifer Becker

Michigan Tech Publications

Producing Class A biosolids is a beneficial way to reuse wastewater treatment solids, but most conventional processes are energy-intensive and expensive. There is growing interest in the use of low-cost, low-tech (LCLT) Class A biosolids treatment processes, especially at small water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs). This study used a holistic sustainability assessment to examine the environmental, economic, and social sustainability of conventional and LCLT processes at small WRRFs. The technologies studied were Direct Heat Drying, Composting, Lagoon Storage, Air Drying, and Temperature-Phased Anaerobic Digestion (TPAD). Environmental impacts were determined by conducting life-cycle assessments for all technologies, which is described in …

La Niña Effects On The Mjo Modulation Of North Pacific Atmospheric Rivers And Associated Western North American Precipitation, L. G. Fernandes, Paul C. Loikith, M. Mora Aug 2025

La Niña Effects On The Mjo Modulation Of North Pacific Atmospheric Rivers And Associated Western North American Precipitation, L. G. Fernandes, Paul C. Loikith, M. Mora

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

We investigate connections between the Madden‐Julian Oscillation (MJO) and North Pacific atmospheric rivers (ARs) and associated precipitation over North America during La Niña (LN) years. Overall, AR frequency is reduced over the northeastern Pacific and western North America in phases 2–5 of the MJO. However, under LN, increased AR activity appears over those regions in phases 4–6 and across the central North Pacific in Phase 3. Distinct effects of LN on the basic state and MJO contribute to the persistence of AR anomalous patterns in phases 3–6. For instance, MJO intensifies in Phase 3 under LN, favoring the coupling between …

A Potential New Sea Surface Temperature Proxy Based On Isomeric Highly Branched Isoprenoid Lipid Biomarkers: Ez25, Simon T. Belt, Lukas Smik, Katrine Husum, Jochen Knies Aug 2025

A Potential New Sea Surface Temperature Proxy Based On Isomeric Highly Branched Isoprenoid Lipid Biomarkers: Ez25, Simon T. Belt, Lukas Smik, Katrine Husum, Jochen Knies

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Two tri-unsaturated and isomeric (E/Z) highly branched isoprenoid (HBI) diatom lipid biomarkers were quantified in 228 water column samples collected from the English Channel, West Svalbard (Arctic), the Scotia Sea (Southern Ocean) and East Antarctica. We found that the relative amounts of the two HBIs correlate well with water temperatures taken at the time of sampling. Based on these findings and some other HBI data reported previously, we suggest that the proportion of the HBI E-isomer (termed EZ25) may serve as a new proxy for palaeo sea surface temperatures, including in the polar regions. Next steps will involve determination of …

Spatial Patterns In Electronic Health Record Data-Based Predictive Modeling: A Case Study Of Prenatal Care And Preeclampsia, Abigail Lewis Aug 2025

Spatial Patterns In Electronic Health Record Data-Based Predictive Modeling: A Case Study Of Prenatal Care And Preeclampsia, Abigail Lewis

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

The electronic health record (EHR) documents interactions between patients and healthcare systems and is widely used for secondary research on health outcomes due to broad adoption. While EHR data support efficient clinical informatics research, they are subject to biases stemming from healthcare seeking behavior, health system attributes, and individual or environmental characteristics. Place-based characteristics, in particular, strongly influence when and how patients access care and shape health outcomes. These biases in EHR data can affect predictive modeling pipelines which leverage them, contributing to variation in model performance across groups. In healthcare, where predictive models are increasingly used to guide care, …

An Analysis Of Vulnerable Road User Crashes In Alaska Using Spatio-Temporal Methods, Santosh Adhikari

Engineering

This study presents a two-part investigation into the spatial patterns of crashes and safety of vulnerable road users (VRUs). VRUs, cyclists and pedestrians in this context, represent approximately 18% of traffic fatalities in Alaska annually. However, existing studies on VRU safety in Alaska are limited and causal factors and effects of safety projects are not well understood making it difficult to implement targeted and strategic approaches to improve VRU safety. To that end, the objectives of this research are two-fold: 1) analyze spatial interactions of VRU crashes involving risk tolerant behaviors; and 2) evaluate the effectiveness of Highway Safety Improvement …

Factors Influencing The Performance Of Farmer-Producer Organizations (Fpos) And Their Societal Impact In Tamil Nadu, Arjune S Aug 2025

Factors Influencing The Performance Of Farmer-Producer Organizations (Fpos) And Their Societal Impact In Tamil Nadu, Arjune S

Theses and Dissertations

Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) are formed mainly for the farmers to have better institutional access to acquire them. They are also under the inspiration of the director's abstinence and the incentive of getting more money. These are socio-psychological individual differences and thus of importance to markets, the perception of markets, and market relevance of group interaction. Self-esteem, attitude to participation in group activities, and willingness to participate in these types of activities are of some significance for his/her performance because they have an effect on their performance afterward.

Farmer social empowerment increased but not farmer economic empowerment did so much …

Educational Opportunities Of Participatory Gis For Accessibility On A College Campus, Shiya Cao, Heather Rosenfeld, Sarah Susnea

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

The educational benefits of Participatory GIS (PGIS) in geographic higher education have received limited direct attention, often because of the complexities of integrating PGIS into university curricula. While a few exceptions found important educational benefits of PGIS, extant studies focused primarily on the educational benefits for students who worked in the research teams, instead of participants who contributed their local knowledge and perspectives to mapping. Our research aims to understand the educational benefits of PGIS for participants in a campus accessibility mapping project using the modes of experiential learning, positionality, and service learning. Through this, we also provide strategies for …

Exploring The Intersection Of Race And Native Speakerism In English Language Teaching: Experiences Of Black African Teachers In Turkey, John Ayodeji Odudele Aug 2025

Exploring The Intersection Of Race And Native Speakerism In English Language Teaching: Experiences Of Black African Teachers In Turkey, John Ayodeji Odudele

Linguistics

Research on race and native speaker status in language teaching provides little insight into the experiences of Black African English teachers (BAETs) in the diaspora. To address this gap, this study examines how aspects of BAETs' positionalities - such as race and native speaker status create challenges in their professional and societal lives in Turkey. Data from twelve semi structured interviews of BAETs were analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings suggest that race related challenges trump language-related ones and that Blackness fundamentally shapes outsiders’ perception and value of BAETs’ linguistic expertise. Even when BAETs possess the same or superior qualifications as …

Benthic Community Composition And Ecosystem Function In Southern Kachemak Bay, Alaska, Jonah Jossart Aug 2025

Benthic Community Composition And Ecosystem Function In Southern Kachemak Bay, Alaska, Jonah Jossart

Marine Biology

The benthic environment in southern Kachemak Bay, Alaska provides critical ecosystem services, processing organic matter from the land and the sea, and returning nutrients to the food web. In Kachemak Bay, concerns have arisen that marine agriculture (mariculture) operations in the form of salmon hatcheries and oyster farms may have negative impacts on the local environment. This thesis investigates the seafloor sediment environment to assess these potential impacts under salmon hatchery net pens in Tutka Bay Lagoon, and under an oyster farm in Jakolof Bay. We found that beneath the net pens, high waste inputs of fish food, feces and …

Strontium Isotope Movement Modeling Of Modern And Ancient Megafauna In Alaska, Audrey Rowe Aug 2025

Strontium Isotope Movement Modeling Of Modern And Ancient Megafauna In Alaska, Audrey Rowe

Biological Sciences

Strontium isotope analysis is a technique that can be used to infer the geographic origin of biological materials. The strontium isotope ratios (87Sr/86Sr) of biological tissues can be matched to locations on a modeled strontium geographic distribution (“isoscape”) with similar 87Sr/86Sr. In this dissertation, I measured 87Sr/86Sr and other stable isotopes along the length of a mammoth tusk to model its lifetime movement and infer details about its food sources and nutritional status. I then adapted this modeling method to caribou tooth enamel to compare modern and premodern caribou space use in interior Alaska and built a new 87Sr/86Sr isoscape …

Partial Budgets Quantify Economic Outcomes Of Soil Health Management For Farmers, Jessica A. Kelton, W. Archie Flanders, Emily P. Ball, Dianna K. Bagnall, C. Wayne Honeycutt

Journal of Extension

Implementation of soil health management systems, such as reduced tillage and cover cropping, can reduce soil erosion, increase water infiltration, and improve soil productivity. Adoption of these practices can also improve net farm income, but effects vary based on region, commodity, and production methods. A partial budget analysis approach was used to evaluate impacts of adoption of soil health management systems on profitability from a regional, on-farm, perspective. The approach provides farmers with a resource to support decisions when considering the adoption of soil health management systems.

Mentoring In The Undergraduate Classroom And Beyond: Creating A Feminist Praxis, Satarupa Dasgupta Aug 2025

Mentoring In The Undergraduate Classroom And Beyond: Creating A Feminist Praxis, Satarupa Dasgupta

Feminist Pedagogy

In the following critical commentary, it is discussed how mentoring--- in the classroom and in academia---can be a feminist practice that comprises an essential part of being a feminist educator. Mentorship encompasses a process in which the mentor disseminates knowledge as well as psychosocial support that are perceived by the mentee as essential for professional or personal development (Sedlacek et al., 2007). Mentorship has been specifically found to fulfill professional needs for women, while enhancing their self-worth and sense of competence, and providing instances of role modeling and social affirmation (Meschitti & Lawton Smith, 2017).
