Global Tax Hubs, Eduardo Baistrocchi
Global Tax Hubs, Eduardo Baistrocchi
Florida Tax Review
Global tax hubs are the black boxes of the international tax regime (ITR). The driving forces of their strategic interaction with other building blocks of the ITR remain undertheorized. This Article offers the first theory of tax hubs as a two-sided global marketplace. It argues that tax hubs are the matchmakers of the ITR. Indeed, international investors, tax hubs and endpoint jurisdictions play different yet interrelated roles within the same ecosystem, i.e., the two-sided platform. The theory is positive rather than normative. It aims to explain how the creeping marketization of the ITR, as part of international law, has been …

Plants, Soils and Climate Student Research
The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission, operational from 2002 to 2017, provided critical measurements of Earth's gravity field anomalies which have been extensively used to study groundwater and terrestrial water storage (TWS) dynamics. In this research, we utilize GRACE data to identify, model, and analyze potential climate parameters contributing to the reconstruction of TWS variability in the Aral Sea Basin region (ASB). We assess the impact of climate change and anthropogenic nature management on TWS change using a quantitative method. Our analysis reveals a significant decline in the TWS at a rate of 0.44 cm year-1 during …
An Analysis Of Feminist Biblical Scholarship Through Case Studies In Judges, Erika Conner
An Analysis Of Feminist Biblical Scholarship Through Case Studies In Judges, Erika Conner
Masters Theses
This thesis examines the rise and significance of feminist biblical scholarship, particularly as it engages the book of Judges. Feminist approaches to Scripture have often been criticized as politically motivated or ideologically biased, yet they also claim to offer corrective readings to centuries of male-dominated interpretation. This study situates feminist scholarship within its historical development and cultural context, beginning with the reconstruction of women’s societal, familial, religious, and agricultural roles in ancient Israel. Building on this foundation, it undertakes a comparative analysis of three key figures in Judges, Deborah, Jael, and the unnamed Woman of Thebez, first through traditional interpretations …

French Orientalist Marie-Pierre Valckman (Maryam Abu Al-Dhahab) And Her Story With Imam Hussein (Peace Be Upon Him), Amal Suhail Abd Al-Husseini, Kifah Saber Rashid
NJF Islamic University Journal
In the 19th century, violent colonial military campaigns aimed to control Muslim wealth, lands, and capabilities, leading to the displacement and death of Muslims. Despite this, Muslims resisted, defending their righteous sons and defending their homeland. Europeans believed that the Qur'an, the primary source for instilling the spirit of sacrifice and redemption among Muslims, would prevent them from subjugating them. This belief was based on the belief that Muslims possessed Hussein, a martyr who set an example of sacrifice and redemption. This historical inevitability confirmed the victory of faith over injustice and evil.
The Adopted Daughter Of Revelation, Fatimah Al-Zahra (Peace Be Upon Her) Between Revelation And Rationality, Mahmood Shakir Alkhafagi
The Adopted Daughter Of Revelation, Fatimah Al-Zahra (Peace Be Upon Her) Between Revelation And Rationality, Mahmood Shakir Alkhafagi
NJF Islamic University Journal
This study explores the unique status of Fatimah al-Zahra (peace be upon her), the daughter of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), through the dual lenses of divine revelation and rational philosophy. It argues that her infallibility, authority, and role in Islamic history are not only rooted in prophetic lineage but also reinforced by rational principles intrinsic to Islamic epistemology. Drawing on Qur’anic verses, Hadiths, and classical Islamic scholarship, the paper examines how Fatimah represents a convergence between abstract reason and cognitive rationality, and how divine revelation elevated her to a status of spiritual and moral infallibility. …
Motivation And Retention In Music Education: A Phenomenological Study On Socioeconomic Status Impact, Bracy C. Martin Jr.
Motivation And Retention In Music Education: A Phenomenological Study On Socioeconomic Status Impact, Bracy C. Martin Jr.
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The retention of middle and high school students in music education programs remains a persistent concern, particularly when disparities in motivation are shaped by socioeconomic status (SES). This hermeneutic phenomenological study investigated how intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors such as funding, parental involvement, off-campus performance opportunities, and student engagement are influenced by SES and how these influences affect student retention in school music programs. Grounded in Deci and Ryan's Self-Determination Theory and Vroom’s Expectancy Theory, the study examined how motivation and SES intersect to either support or hinder student persistence in music education.

The Significance Of Cavalry In The American Civil War In Deciding Victory And Defeat, Specifically In The Western And Trans-Mississippi Theaters Of The War., Tony R. Malone Jr.
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This research examines how effective cavalry was in the American Civil War, and the ultimate decision in victory and defeat. To answer this question, one must first investigate the origin of the American cavalry from its foundation in the American Revolution and trace it to the beginning of the American Civil War; this brings the reader to several sub-questions that help answer the main question. Why was Confederate cavalry dominating early in the war, and why did Union cavalry ultimately gain parity and superiority over its Confederate counterparts?
The readers will start with a solid look into the history of …
The Effect Of Body-Worn Cameras On Police Credibility In The Courtroom, Robert A. Lindblom
The Effect Of Body-Worn Cameras On Police Credibility In The Courtroom, Robert A. Lindblom
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The use of Body-Worn Cameras (BWCs) by criminal justice practitioners in America has increased dramatically during the past decade. However, many assumptions were made during this process about the effectiveness of BWCs without adequate research or evidence to back up the claims. Deploying new technology under such circumstances often produces unexpected outcomes. One of these unanticipated results may be the increased dependence of judges and juries upon video evidence. Increasingly, adjudicators may hesitate to accept an officer’s testimony at face value. Prosecutors may even be reluctant to pursue cases at all when video is unavailable to bolster the officer’s statement. …
Hiring For Leadership Behaviors, Wes Gow
Hiring For Leadership Behaviors, Wes Gow
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The problem addressed in this research study was low morale and decreased employee engagement within the organization when candidates are assessed for technical acumen at the expense of leadership behaviors. The purpose of this study was to expand the understanding of how hiring managers assess leadership behaviors and the effect that poor leadership behaviors have on organizational morale and employee engagement. A single case study was conducted with 31 hiring managers within the researcher’s present employer, ABC, Inc. (pseudonym name). Data collection included one-on-one interviews, review of existing job interview templates, and follow-on interviews to reflect on recent job interviews. …

The Day Of The Lord As The Unifying Theme Of John’S Revelation, Jared Michael Quirk
The Day Of The Lord As The Unifying Theme Of John’S Revelation, Jared Michael Quirk
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this study is to argue that the day of the Lord (DOTL) is a major unifying theme within the book of Revelation. Chapters 2–3 of this study prepare the reader to accept this point by first arguing that the DOTL was a prominent theme in both the Old Testament Scriptures and the other New Testament writings besides Revelation (Matthew–Jude). After establishing the validity of the DOTL as a prominent theme in the biblical corpus (and thus as a theme worthy of John’s consideration), chapters 4–5 of this study focus specifically on the book of Revelation, highlighting how …

Efficacy Of Fintech Solutions In Advancing Financial Inclusion For The Underserved In South Africa: A Systematic Literature Review, Tebogo S. Legodi, Adheesh Budree
African Conference on Information Systems and Technology
Financial inclusion in South Africa is a critical mechanism for addressing systemic poverty, unemployment, and inequality. Fintech solutions have increasingly been positioned as key enablers of expanded access to financial services, particularly among underserved populations. However, there remains a lack of literature that evaluates the efficacy, rather than merely the impact, of these technologies. This study presents a systematic literature review (SLR) of 21 peer-reviewed articles, policy documents, and industry reports to examine how Fintech advances financial inclusion in South Africa. The literature is synthesised into four thematic categories: Financial Inclusion (Concepts and Metrics); Fintech in South Africa and Global …
Re-Imagine Paradise: The Impacts Of The Illegal Annexation Of Hawai'i & Tourism On Native Hawaiians, Paige Edwards
Re-Imagine Paradise: The Impacts Of The Illegal Annexation Of Hawai'i & Tourism On Native Hawaiians, Paige Edwards
SMU Journal of Undergraduate Research
This literature review presents a vital exploration of colonialism, the illegal annexation of Hawai’i, and the subsequent emergence of the tourism industry as a neocolonial enterprise. Neocolonialism is the process of colonial dominance through modern exploitation, which is masked through economic opportunities and has left territories and their native people dependent on it. By tracing the major historical events in Hawai’i highlights how education was a vital aspect of Native Hawaiian culture, empowering its people - a stark contrast to the current education system where the education system perpetuates the commodification of Native Hawaiian culture. Education has played a pivotal …

Mapping Food Justice: Urban Farms And The Examination Of Equitable Food Access, Aaron Avila, Mark Ayiah, Jake Stavely, Marc T. Sager, Maximilian K. Sherard, Anthony J. Petrosino
SMU Journal of Undergraduate Research
In this project, we worked alongside members from an urban farm in South Dallas to learn about issues related to food justice, urban farming, and food deserts. Using participatory design research methods, we created data visualizations showing how society can reduce inequities relating to food access produced in historically underserved neighborhoods. The research goals guiding this study are: a) to identify food deserts and urban farms in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan region (DFW) and b) to determine which urban farms service the needs of these food deserts. To identify food deserts, we took two steps: First, we used open-access data …

Cardiovascular Research Symposium
Background: In Virginia’s Hampton Roads (HR) region, minority populations experience notably higher mortality rates than white populations. Despite abundant research on the association between social determinants of health (SDOH) and cardiovascular mortality rates at the state and national levels, there is a lack of research examining this association in the HR region.
Objective: The main objective of this study is to train and validate a geospatial-temporal predictive model to examine the association between SDOH and cardiovascular mortality, in the HR region.
Methods: Utilizing a longitudinal dataset (2010–2021) from the Virginia Department of Health and the U.S. Census Bureau, we trained …

Road Trip!: U-Turns, Detours, And Construction Aplenty In Fordist Modernity, Eric Ferris
Road Trip!: U-Turns, Detours, And Construction Aplenty In Fordist Modernity, Eric Ferris
Impact: A Journal of Community and Cultural Inquiry in Education
Beginning with Peter Beilharz’s (2015) assertion that the modern and its active form, modernization, are often reductively conflated with both Fordism and Americanism, this essay teases out the idea that modernization is multifaceted, contested, and global in scope, despite the pains that both Fordism and Americanism have taken to obscure this unevenness in an attempt to monopolize the narrative of modernization. From there, it takes seriously Beilharz’s (2015) assertion that modernization imprints itself onto both production and consumption, and that among its paramount innovations is its impact on culture. The essay asserts that in addition to the automobile, Fordism has …

Sowing The Seeds Of Utopia Collectively, From Australia To America And Everywhere In Between: A Methodology And Practice For Resistance And Emancipation, Rachelle F. Marshall
Impact: A Journal of Community and Cultural Inquiry in Education
This reflection on internationally renowned scholars Peter Beilharz and Sian Supski’s visit to Eastern Michigan University (EMU) in October 2024 presents utopia as a sociological methodology useful for research in educational studies. Presenting a brief introduction and exploration of the methodology, this article considers the cultural changes that are necessary to teach toward democratic, ecologically sustainable utopias compared to capitalist visions of utopia. As a starting point for further discussion, this personal reflection merely scratches the surface to provide a glimpse into the conditions that would underlie a democratic, ecologically sustainable utopia and serves to document a few of the …

Evolution Of Industrial Structure And Economic Growth In Hebei Province, China, Jianguang Hou, Danlin Yu, Hao Song
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Over the past several decades, old industrialized regions worldwide have faced immense pressure to adapt to global economic shifts. Using one of China’s major industrial provinces, Hebei, as a representative case study, this study examines how the evolution of one of China’s old industrial provinces, Hebei’s industrial structure has influenced its economic growth from 1990 to 2023. Drawing on theories of structural transformation and endogenous growth, we argue that the reallocation of resources from lower-productivity sectors (e.g., agriculture) to higher-productivity sectors (manufacturing and services) can act as an engine of growth. We employ a shift-share analysis (SSA) to decompose Hebei’s …
